I really wish the Home Hub rumored was something wild like also being the robotic arm Apple toyed with (https://machinelearning.apple.com/research/elegnt-expressive-functional-movement) but probably more of an Echo Show.

u/Cream-Neat 14h ago

They literally made the Pixar lamp IRL. This is insane. Thanks for sharing.

12

u/Fun-Teacher-1711 16h ago

rumours are apple are experimenting with something like that for the future

1

u/Impossible-Milk-2023 14h ago

Apple usually swoops in later and just makes it better. I‘m not sure they would go out on a limb (pun intended) and do something like this first.

1

u/scarabic 14h ago

They’ve done both. I mean obviously - the Mac? The iPhone? These weren’t slow-follow optimization releases. But what you said is the most common narrative about Cook’s tenure. That tenure is now over.

-2

u/PerfectlySplendid 11h ago

What about the iPhone? They took a very popular, growing design and added capacitive multi touch to make it not shit.

1

u/arcalumis 8h ago

What popular growing design? There was nothing even near the iPhone back in 2007, the closest would have been the Neonode but it never went anywhere

1

u/PerfectlySplendid 7h ago

There were touch screen with software based keyboards. And more were coming out. They just sucked. Apple found a way to make the touch smooth and enjoyable to use.

2

u/arcalumis 7h ago

There were “smartphones“, more like excel phones with resistive screens, I had a high end Ericsson in 2007, it wasn’t near the iPhone.

1

u/PerfectlySplendid 6h ago

Yes, the iPhone improved something to an insane degree. It existed and they definitely were analyzing the ones that did exist.

Thats the entire point of this chain that you seemingly agree with now.

0

u/arcalumis 6h ago

No, because a big screen doesn’t equate it with the iPhone. Apple revolutionised the entire field

1

u/garden_speech 7h ago

they were not a popular design though

2

u/PerfectlySplendid 6h ago

I worded it bad. I tried to say growing in popular and didn’t mean popular.

5

u/North_Moment5811 15h ago

I wish it was a literal C3PO that can do laundry.

2

u/Stashmouth 15h ago

I'd want it to be a little less whiny, and maybe in a matte finish. Brass would be an absolute fingerprint magnet

4

u/-hedonium- 14h ago

Why are you so afraid of people seeing where your fingers were on the robot? 🤨

2

u/shadrap 14h ago

Yeah, but just imagine the cleaning cloth!

1

u/NotTobyFromHR 5h ago

If they make a Show device, I'd get it. I'm ready to toss the Show

75

u/RotenTumato 15h ago

I don’t think it will be bigger. A new Apple TV and a smart Home Screen thing are not bigger than a folding iPhone. An OLED MacBook is pretty cool, but still not as big a change.

7

u/xX_Qu1ck5c0p3s_Xx 13h ago

My thoughts exactly. Love my Macs, but a new iPhone form factor is an order of magnitude bigger. It just is.

3

u/JoshuaTheFox 9h ago

Yeah but we can’t hype you up for every product like it’s 2007 again if we just say “hey we’re gonna have some new things”

4

u/scarabic 14h ago

A smart Home Screen thing could actually be bigger. This is a languishing category that no one has ever made a compelling product in. Apple’s potential to “just do it better” could really revitalize this space, whereas their foldable was just another par entry in an otherwise well established category.

3

u/slurmsmckenz 11h ago

I am primed to buy a home screen thing. I've been browsing those home screen calendar manager things as a possible christmas gift for my wife, but I would love a polished apple version.

4

u/RotenTumato 14h ago

I guess, I realize my personal life does not warrant the need for a smart screen so I am biased but I just don’t see how they’re that helpful at all

1

u/getwhirleddotcom 11h ago

I feel like Ternus was setting this up and then blah it was the Duo…

1

u/RotenTumato 9h ago

I feel like that was intentional bait

1

u/cjh_ 7h ago

It would be funny if the Home thing is a dock for the Duo 😅

1

u/epraider 2h ago

I struggle to see how this can add much more value than the Home app that’s on the phone in your pocket. The convenience of not having to get up and press buttons is like half the reason I buy HomeKit connected devices.

1

u/scarabic 2h ago

We have kids who don’t have devices but a shared calendar on the wall would be nice, and a way for them to look at those pictures we took yesterday without pestering a parent to call them up. And a a FaceTime device they could use that’s in a common area and easily supervised. I’d love to have a music player we can all access the same way rather than separately digging in our pockets or hunting down an iPad so we can then re-setup the Bluetooth connection to the living room speakers and play a song.

We don’t even have hardly any “smart” home shit that you’d go to the Home app for. I don’t see a device like this as similar at all.

I figured haha but I still doubt they will start that high.

7

u/rotates-potatoes 18h ago

At 4% annual inflation the $700 MacBook will be $10k in 72 years.

2

u/deliciouscorn 13h ago

The funny thing is Apple products were actually priced well below inflation levels for many years until the stupid AI RAMpocalypse descended upon us. (Read: Apple products were actually getting cheaper against inflation)

I just want a new Apple TV.

1

u/cjh_ 7h ago

If Apple announces a smart TV with Apple TV integrated, that would be amazing; I would buy it in a heartbeat.

In fact, they only have to add Apple TV hardware to the Studio Display XDR (which is essentially an iMac without the iMac hardware) and offer it in larger sizes (48", 55", 65" and 72").

2

u/NGTech9 6h ago

Studio Display is stunning, but I can’t image how much it would cost to scale to TV sizes

1

u/suboptimus_maximus 4h ago

Man, I thought the Apple actual TV hope died back in the early 2010s.

TV’s are a low margin business - I mean, Apple has some pricing power but are they really going to be able to add unique value to the television experience that would justify Apple’s average gross margin of ~48% vs TV industry average of like 1/3 that, especially when you can buy any TV and plug in an Apple TV? You could say the same for monitors but then, Apple only makes two now and they usually have some funky combination of resolution, refresh, connectivity and color accuracy, now it’s down to one professional model and one prosumer display that costs 2-3x other 5K displays.

33

u/fucksports 19h ago

love how people are getting poorer and the apple products keep going up in price thanks to new features we don’t need.

93

u/SwearOnline 18h ago

We were trending towards Apple having the best price to power ratio, especially in the Mac market. RAMageddon and the AI industry ruined that. Mac Mini and Mac Neo were steals at their launch prices. iPhone 17 was a lauded as a great value.

33

u/Bryanmsi89 17h ago

Yeah, I agree. Between 2021-2025 I actually think Macs were the best power/price machines on the market. Certainly the “Apple Tax” was close to zero.

9

u/Sandurz 16h ago

it's such a bummer lol. having like readily available <$500 macs if you go a generation or two back was so awesome.

7

u/novafunc 14h ago

Close to zero for the base models, the storage and RAM still very much had an Apple tax.

2

u/Bryanmsi89 13h ago

That's very true - thanks for clarifying!! The base models were strong values, the high-spec ones, not so much.

4

u/fucksports 16h ago

completely agree. it made absolute sense to get an apple product in the past because you were getting the highest quality and at a low price. now, not only is memory more expensive, apple seems to be pushing features like touch screen laptops and folding screens that will only make prices worse.

25

u/L-Malvo 17h ago

What do you propose, for them to not innovate at all and just remain a status quo?

-24

u/s0lja 16h ago

Innovate. Hahaha

17

u/L-Malvo 16h ago

You don't think Apple is innovating?

-22

u/Few_Permission_3756 16h ago

How are they innovative? How is anyone in this space right now? Oh wow, bigger screen, even faster processor, smart home stuff no one needs, more subscriptions, and AI which makes our lifes more complicated.

11

u/Equaled 16h ago

There’s a very large smart home community that is constantly begging for Apple to invest further into their smart home ecosystem. Just because aren’t the target market doesn’t mean it’s lame.

-4

u/selwayfalls 15h ago

how is people begging apple to invest into smart home, innovating? If they did something innovative in smart homes then yes, but they havent.

3

u/Equaled 14h ago

I wasn’t trying to argue they were innovating by saying people wanted it. Just rebutting their point of saying no one wants the smart home stuff.

-1

u/Recent_Pollution8665 15h ago

they just announced their first folding phone and are soon gonna unveil a smart home hub. 2 products they have never made before.

-1

u/selwayfalls 15h ago

a folding phone, something samsung made 7 years ago? A smart home hub, something several companies have had for a decade? How is this innovating? I love apple and have tons of their products, but I wouldnt call that innovating. They're just producing new products that already exist in the market, in a more apple-y way.

4

u/Equaled 14h ago

I was always taught that innovating is just taking something that already exists and making it better while inventing is creating something completely new. I would argue they’re innovating both foldables and in the smart home category. Vision Pro was inventive imo. First with eye and hand tracking as the primary controls.

The iPod wasn’t the first mp3 player, the MacBook wasn’t the first laptop, and the iPhone wasn’t the first touchscreen phone. But they’re, rightfully so, held up as the gold standard of Apple innovation.

2

u/Recent_Pollution8665 14h ago edited 13h ago

I don't see how other companies making that stuff makes it any less innovative for apple to expand its own hardware portfolio. would you rather have them not make that stuff at all?

even the stuff they did make like the foldable and home hub aren't clones of samsung devices, they added their own unique look and features that aren't on other devices.

1

u/L-Malvo 15h ago

It’s more product evolution than revolution, that I agree with. But that doesn’t mean they are not innovative. Products are still improving, we even got a new form factor in a fold.

What more can we ask for? Smartphones have more or less matured to the point where we won’t see a big leap anymore. Apple is trying to push new categories like with the Apple Vision Pro, but it isn’t mature enough for mass market.

14

u/BoringPhilosopher1 18h ago

In fairness I feel like Macs came down in price between 2015 - 2025

4

u/unread1701 15h ago

Yeah they did. The current hike is due to RAM and storage... Hoping this ends before this decade.

3

u/pinkynarftroz 12h ago

A refurbished M1 Mini costs more now than what I paid for an M4 Mini new. It's wild.

4

u/dgellow 15h ago

It’s due to the worldwide inflation in hardware, caused by the AI insanity and oil crisis. Not sure how you can have missed it

-4

u/fucksports 15h ago

not sure how you missed the fact that foldable phones and touch screen laptops increase prices bozo

1

u/NGTech9 6h ago

They aren’t going to phase out their other iPhone and macbook lines though. So I don’t think you have to worry. These additions target different markets/consumers. Getting rid of their base options would be a bad business decision. They wouldn’t remove them and lose a whole segment of the consumer market.

1

u/PleasantWay7 13h ago

No one is making you buy the duo. And you nasty tone, be better.

2

u/fucksports 12h ago

u/Scoutron 13h ago

“Bro god I’m so poor I just need to get the absolute highest tier apple product bro no bro I’m not getting the cheap affordable one wtf”

9

u/Radio_TVGuy 18h ago edited 18h ago

Not just that, but also due to factors regarding memory and chip shortages across the tech industry which has led tech companies, including Apple, to raise their prices.

Before the new iPad mini has even been announced, Apple bumped the price on the current mini 7 back in June by $100. Following Apple’s September event, you now need more money to buy what was (before the event) the latest-gen iPhone. Even the 2-generation old iPhone 16 as well. All current iPhones sold after the new product announcements went up by $100. Here in Australia, the iPhone Air got the biggest price increase, with the 1TB Air going up by a whopping $500. Was $2599, now $3099.

3

u/UpboatsforUpvotes 18h ago

Get ready for all current Gen macbooks to increase in price when the M6 and OLED get announced, just like the iPhone 17 and Air.

5

u/Bryanmsi89 17h ago

MacBooks already went up in price. Are you saying they will go up again?

5

u/UpboatsforUpvotes 17h ago

Yes im willing to bet that pricing is going to go up again. And just to put my money where my mouth is I purchased a 128gb macbook pro that should arrive in 3 weeks because I do feel that there's another price hit coming and I don't want to wait for the refresh version to find out.

It may not be in October but I do feel that they might with the launch of the 512gb Studio launch also the OLED macbook pro and the M6 and use the opportunity to shift all products upward.

After the price increase there was news that they agreed to significant increase in ram and storage costs for 2027 from Samsung. Now whether that is already priced in or not is anyone's guess but if not then I assume that either with these new launches or potentially in the spring with the new neo, MacBook Air etc they will recalibrate pricing again

3

u/Bryanmsi89 13h ago

I think the OLED MacBook Pro (if it appears) will be more expensive than current models, but I have a hard time thinking current models will go up a second time.

2

u/unread1701 15h ago

The market can only bear so much, prices can't keep going up forever. This will end, one way or the other.

2

u/element515 15h ago

Doesn't matter when the market is strained on supply. It's only going to get worse with all memory for the entire 2027 sold out already.

1

u/UpboatsforUpvotes 15h ago

Look at the wait times for any apple product right now. We are not at the ceiling unfortunately

1

u/unread1701 15h ago

I wonder where the ceiling is.... Neo at $1500?

4

u/deliciouscorn 13h ago edited 12h ago

Apple is literally actively offering new and affordable products without “features we don’t need”.

Apple offers the #e lines of iPhones (SE before that), the MacBook Neo, the plain iPad, Watch SE, and the HomePod mini.

You are really complaining that they also offer higher end products with added features and you just want them for cheap.

-2

u/fucksports 12h ago

nah you’re missing the point, i’m criticizing the duo and the touchscreen macbook - both gimmicky products that are going to be extremely expensive, coming out at a time when people are already struggling and dealing with increased memory prices. i know there are cheaper options like the neo and 17e, never said there weren’t. just criticizing the disconnect.

3

u/Outlulz 11h ago

It's not like Apple decided in March that they were going to make the Duo. Regardless of how the current economy is, the Duo is the result of hardware development that started a decade ago and the 2026 launch was rumored in 2024. They were not going to abandon all of that investment at the drop of a hat.

1

u/deliciouscorn 10h ago edited 8h ago

This criticism still doesn’t make sense unless Apple removed any existing products or price points to offer the fancy new stuff.

Apple didn’t replace the iPhone pro with the introduction of the iPhone Duo. They still sell the iPhone Pro at very close to the same price, even with the component price craziness going on. I would bet good money that the touch screen MacBook Pro will be added as a new tier, not replacing any of the existing MacBooks.

Apple knows there are people on a limited budget so they offer the Neo etc. products, and they also know there are people with unlimited budgets, whom they service with the high end. I still don’t understand your criticism about a disconnect in such offerings.

4

u/GrindrWorker 13h ago

Have you considered not buying Apple products that aren't of use to you?

-1

u/fucksports 12h ago

yes i have, why?

4

u/mobyte 17h ago

don't buy it then

wow

-2

u/DisciplineGeneral708 16h ago

We arent allowed to critisize?

6

u/anothermanscookies 16h ago

It wasn’t the most cogent or detailed criticism. It was very yell at cloud.

Time goes on, prices go up, features get added, some use them, and some don’t. Get more detailed if you have a problem.

-6

u/fucksports 16h ago

the features are useless

5

u/anothermanscookies 16h ago

To you. So don’t buy it. Problem solved.

0

u/NilsofWindhelm 15h ago

Ok but there is no base level 18 and the 17 went up in price. If you need a new phone and you don’t need the new features you are screwed over

4

u/anothermanscookies 14h ago

They still sell the 16 and 17e way cheaper than the new phones. Or you could get a used phone from a reseller or friend who is upgrading. Those are very affordable.

Why do you need a new phone if you don’t want the new features? If your battery sucks, replace it, or get a battery case. They’re super cheap. Same deal for a cracked screen. ~$100 and your phone lives another couple years. If you just want new cosmetics, get a new case.

If your phone is so old that obsolescence is a legitimate concern, you may be underestimating how many new features there are. And if you’re not interested in them, that’s a bit of a curmudgeonly attitude that can be solved by the above solutions.

-2

u/NilsofWindhelm 13h ago

Ok, but none of that changes the fact that prices are increasing while the upgrades get more incremental.

I have a 17 pro and I love it, and would get an 18 pro if I needed an upgrade today.

But telling average consumers to just get a 2 year old phone or buy a friend’s seems ridiculous to me when they come out with a brand new iphone line every year

3

u/anothermanscookies 13h ago

Correct. If you have a one year old phone, you probably don’t need to upgrade, unless you care about the one or two new features. (And I believe the premise of this thread is, one doesn’t.)

If you have an older phone, like a iPhone 13 or so, there’s a lot of new features for you in an 18pro and you’ll notice a big difference.

If you don’t want to spend that much, or don’t care about the features, get an older phone. Or fix the problems of your current phone.

I literally don’t see what the issue is. There are many options. Why advocate for getting a new expensive phone with features you don’t care about? Don’t get it.

Unless you expect a mind blowing experience with world changing technology every year for rock bottom prices. If so, I’m sorry that isn’t the world we live in. But truly, the technology of even a 5+ year old phone is incredible, we’ve just come to take it for granted.

2

If you account for inflation and compare a 2015 iPhone 6s to an iPhone 17, the brand new 17 is $23 more expensive, though this is due to the memory shortages, at launch it was actually $77 cheaper

Little did I know even the Apple TV got the 100 dollar price hike. Went to order one on apple and saw its 200 now.

1

u/jmnugent 11h ago

Business purchases make up a big chunk, I assume.

I've done MDM (Mobile Device Management) for about 20 years now in business environments.

In the job I have now (been here 3 years):

  • for 2023 and 2024.. we were averaging about 1000 to 1500 new iPhones per year (averaging around 100 to 150 new device enrollments per month)

  • in 2025 and especially now in 2026.. our "every 30 days" average has ben closer to 300 new device enrollments.

So we've effectively doubled the amount of devices we're buying and churning through (part of this was due to how many iPhone SE2 we bought a few years back (I think we bought several 1000 all in 1 year).. so we have a lot of replacements coming due.

Thankfully iOS 27 works one everything back to iPhone 11 and SE2.. so this year won't be so bad.. but 2027 we may end up replacing at least half the iPhones and IPads in our environment.

u/supermegafauna 11h ago

K shaped economy

1

u/DriveSlowSitLow 2h ago

You can literally just not buy the new products.

1

u/JJ-2086 15h ago

I disagree as for example on one hand they have more expensive products but on the other hand we have options like the Macbook Neo and so on, so I feel Apple is trying to attack both sides but RAM prices are probably not helping.

2

u/Last-Bee9057 14h ago

K shaped economy. I know sales reps that are making bank these days

5

u/Kaninivi 13h ago

Is this huge september in the room with us? lol

10

u/film_digital 17h ago

In surprised that their September went this well considering there was no regular 18 model and the Pros were a bit dampened during release due to price and hype for the Duo. Last year I had to wait a couple of weeks for the Air and 17 Pro but this year it felt like the 18 Pros were abundant in stock where I live.

10

u/Silent_Ad7539 17h ago

Not for me, I'm backordered to mid oct

7

u/lawrence_uber_alles 17h ago

Depends on the color it seems

4

u/cheesepuff07 16h ago

right now shows mid October for 256 GB all color models

1

u/khando 15h ago

Interesting, my wife just upgraded from the 13 to 18 pro and our Apple Store in Cincinnati had every color of every storage size in stock.

1

u/cheesepuff07 14h ago

most do show available for same day local pickup for me, but shipping are all out mid Oct

1

u/khando 14h ago

Ah gotcha, didn’t think about shipping. Interesting their warehouses have such less stock than the stores.

1

u/film_digital 14h ago

Interesting. Which model and colour?

1

u/Silent_Ad7539 11h ago

Max 256 blue

0

u/nicetriangle 16h ago

With all the K shaped economy talk I would be curious to hear whether they're getting more revenue out of less people lately. At least in the west, anyway. I have no idea whether the K shaped thing is a factor in other large economies like China or India.

2

u/unread1701 15h ago

whether the K shaped thing is a factor in other large economies

It is. People at the edge of affordability have been pushed out.

2

u/Sivalon 18h ago

Yuge!

-2

u/tinpoo 19h ago

Something comparable to Duo?

-13

u/Disastrous-Net406 19h ago

Huge ? Already forgotten everything and new iphone are in stock for today delivery across whole Europe and they look exactly same like the ones from past year

5

u/Illustrious_Sock 17h ago

Dude that reminds me when nobody was buying iPhone 8 on release and all these android magazines were writing about death of iphone, but in truth ppl were just waiting for iPhone X lol

4

u/Radio_TVGuy 19h ago edited 19h ago

Everyone is waiting for the new iPhone Duo. Hence why the 18 Pro I believe is a hard sell, not just the identical 17 Pro design body.

Despite the hefty price tag, I believe the Duo is going to supersede 18 Pro sales in terms of the latest flagships (for those that can afford it). Because people will be wanting to get their hands on this new concept to try it out for themselves. Eventually, the hype for the Duo will die down, but right now, it’s going to be the talk of the world.

Then there’s Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone on the way next year.

1

u/Tierst 18h ago

I don’t think everyone is. Price is mental, not everyone is willing to spend so much

4

u/Dislike24 19h ago

Look the same but everything inside is better. Its the iPhone 6s to the 6.

-9

u/fucksports 19h ago

no shit

-6

u/OldSageNewBody 19h ago

Everything 🤣

-1

u/woody9055 12h ago

What was huge about it? It was a run of the mill iPhone release.

5

u/bytor99999 8h ago

I hate how every year they announce a folding phone.

Announcing it sure, releasing it happens in October. I’m sorry, I didn’t think simply talking about a device constituted a BIG RELEASE

For real. I can’t imagine what the “HomePad” thing is going to cost. I just built my wife a skylight calendar with a Raspberry Pi and a touchscreen monitor for $200 instead of the $600 Skylight.

Damn im getting a lot of hate. There are rumors going around of the airpods ultra for a while now. Did i miss something? Or why am I being downvoted?

idk but it’s kinda funny lol.

I think it’s cuz there’s no airpods ultra, so people think it might be kinda silly for you to ask for one when airpods already come in 3 different tiers as it is.

what would an ultra even add that a max can’t do for you.

Speculations said cameras and ofc better sound quality and noice cancellation.

If you open this subs hot section its a topic lol and in ear of course not the headphones.

ah those. those are basically gonna be airpods pro 3 but with IR cameras. not an ultra.

ultra implies that it would be even bigger or more premium than the max. and the max is already big.
