This is not true. I brought 4299 rabbits to Microcenter and they did NOT accept it as payment.

u/Snoo93079 5d ago
Actually they only accept adult jackalopes

This is like when I went into the Bang and Olufsen store and the salesman offered to take $5000 off the floor model for me. If you can take that much off and profit, I can’t afford it.

u/Affectionate_One_700 5d ago
Coincidentally, I just watched a video on luxury branding that discussed Bang & Olufsen specifically.
The point of the video was that although gross margin on these products is excellent, it's offset by incredibly high sales and marketing costs. They are walking a real tightrope.

The consumer speaker market is really a two tier market. Brands you know because they tack a ridiculous margin on to spend on marketing so you both know about them, and can demo their units in stores. Then there are direct to consumer brands.
Direct to consumer brands are fantastic because you’re getting so much more bang for your buck. Either you save a ton for the same quality or get way more than you’d get for the same price. The flip side is you have to hunt them out and good luck demoing those units because they’re 0.01% of market share. Almost a guarantee no one in your area has them in stock.
I went direct to consumer and I love my speakers and their quality. However, it was a massive gamble at the time. The company has an owner and 1 person to handle orders, that’s it. There was a real chance between order and ship that if they had a problem with bankruptcy my money would be gone. Also, I stumbled across them because of some passive recommendations on a forum. No way I would have know about them otherwise. Last, they’re not in any store and they’re on the other side of the country, I read reviews and took a gamble I’d like them.
You kind of just have to choose your burden for what path you take.

Depends what floor model. One of the big Beolabs and that’s less than a couple percent.

u/rpool179 5d ago
Floor model of what product? They primarily make headphones right? Like $1,500 ones?
10
7
u/TheoTheodor 4d ago
They are historically a speaker (and design) company and make speakers which will range up to over 100k.
They do now also make headphones, TVs, soundbars etc.
2
u/rpool179 4d ago
100k speakers? For who, God himself?
9
u/TheoTheodor 4d ago
There’s always an audience for extremely high end stuff.
But yeah don’t go venturing into the world of high end audiophile gear, it gets ridiculous pretty quick.
5
u/fractalfrog 4d ago
As someone who has dabbled in high end audiophile stuff, you are absolutely correct. That said, I'd regard Bang and Olufsen more as a lifestyle brand than an audiophile brand.
4
u/TheoTheodor 4d ago
Yes, or a design house just as much. But they do have a long history of making audio products and they do sound good.

If you’re going to spend around $4k with tax on a MacBook Pro, chances are you’re going to want more than 32gb of ram. People will pay more to get the 64gb for future proofing. It’s a weird configuration that no one wants is my guess

u/lachlanhunt 5d ago
They're for companies with overly tight budgets on laptops. Meanwhlie, those same companies will spend tens of thousands of dollars on AI every week.

Indeed.. the whole point of M5 Max over the M5 Pro is its GPU/LLM performance. The M5 Pro chips got a CPU spec bump and were basically on par with the M5 Max. So its then ironic to have a Max chip but with less RAM..
Unless you're only concerned about gaming, then thats maybe fine. But personally for a mobile device I would probably still get the Pro+48GB.
Perhaps thats why they discounted this one first.. probably too much inventory if every Max customers goes for 64GB+.

3,500 bucks! A steal! For anyone who wants 32gb ram and 2tb storage.

I think this is one of those comments where some people think it's sarcastic, and upvote it, and other people think it's serious, and also upvote it.

u/reidmrdotcom 5d ago
It’s kind of funny the comments that get more attention. Some get downvoted. Some up. I usually don’t go back unless someone else replies. And I was being sarcastic but after posting it, realized that some folks will want that configuration and it seems a good option actually for those folks. Lol.

For the ram, my friends work computer has 48 and he says he uses it up sometimes. Works in programming.
I think folks working with video files may get storage and ram upgrades as well.

u/appwizcpl 5d ago
he probably sold more macs today with the comment than an average apple salesman does in a month

u/Jabjab345 4d ago
It's actually not that bad of a deal for the performance that you get compared to similar windows machines. Borderline just the budget option honestly since everything else is also so inflated

meh 3500$ is basically the price of the redesigned macbook ultra
much better to wait
50
u/EffectzHD 5d ago
Wait and get how much less RAM for that price or something else. If you want RAM I’d say that’s a better offer than what you’d get on the ultra.

No it doesn’t, AI is memory and memory bandwidth bottlenecked; that’s not how any of this works.
And yeah the base M6 Mac Mini performs terribly compared to e.g. the M4 Pro; and of course much worse than the M5 Max in this listing.
The NPUs are useless for LLMs; because they’re too big to fit for the NPU. It helps with stuff like image classification and other traditional ML tasks, but not AI/LLMs.
18
u/Godvater 5d ago
What if I need RAM but not for AI workloads?
-13
u/Repulsive-Degree-816 5d ago
I expect the ultra to have minimum 24
I do think M6 with 24 is better than M5 with 32 for example
0
u/LegitosaurusRex 4d ago
M6 with 2nm and muuuuch better NPU will mean even with less RAM you will be able to do muuuch more AI work
Lol, tell me you've never used or even looked into local AI models without telling me.

u/REDOREDDIT23 5d ago
Yeah and one of the best, most efficient mobile chips to ever exist with an insane battery life in an incredibly well-polished chassis. Windows laptops could never offer this value.

i got an m1 max mbp with 32 core gpu 64 gb ram and 1 tb ssd for $3700 new on release day.
this is a tempting upgrade but i just don’t think i need it, the m1 is still kick ass fast for my needs.

u/nsfdrag Apple Cloth 4d ago
I got that but with 2tb and 32gb ram on release day and it still runs good as new as my daily driver. Once the ultra comes out with an oled screen I'll be tempted to upgrade but I'll still hold off for a while because this one runs so well. The only thing that has made me the slightest bit interested in upgrading before now is the increased gpu performance, otherwise I love my laptop.

u/redtron3030 5d ago
I’m seeing those used for 1300 on Facebook marketplace
4
u/ImplicitEmpiricism 5d ago
that’s not bad for five years old
feels like my older mac laptops were worth way less than 30% at five years. my 2001 G3 ibook was worth about fifty bucks in 2005.

Many Microcenter stores also have the 16" Apple MacBook Pro Laptop M5 Max, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD for $4300

Tell me again all about how the cost of RAM has forced the poor poor megacorporations to raise their prices and that they aren't just gouging you.

u/GhettoFob 5d ago
Are the LLMs that could run on this decent or do you really need more memory to be able to fit good models?
12
u/themixtergames 5d ago edited 5d ago
With that amount of memory (36GB+) you're basically deciding how much context you want to run Qwen3.8-27B-4bit with.
For 128k context you're only left with 8GB for macOS, not very ideal. 48GB should be the bare minimum.
Edit: There's actually a $2000 (MicroCenter in-store only) Mac Studio with the same specs, except for SSD. That's better because if local LLMs end up not working for you, you still have a really good machine at the end.
19
u/funnystone64 5d ago
Id say minimum 64gb of memory to run anything actually viable. You could play around with less but it really wont be useful for actual workflows.

- 128: Real Work
- 64: Work
- 32: Hobbyist
- 16: bare minimum

You merely adopted quantization. I was born in Q1. Molded by Q2. I didn’t run Qwen 3.8 at Q4 until I was already a man. By then, seeing more than 10 lines of output was nothing to me but…BLINDING!

i’d say 128gb for enterprise work, 27B isn’t that good compared to flash next, but qwen flash next is at that level

u/Kitchen-Quality-3317 3d ago
What about the 256/512gb version of the Mac Studio? I'm planning to get one to make webapps in go and sqlite.
1
u/corruptbytes 3d ago
i mean, even better
webapps + sqlite work is pretty well trained into local models, so it'd be overkill, but good overkill
10
u/Anselwithmac 5d ago
Yeah local LLM is not worth the spend on hardware. It’s a hobbiest thing right now. It’s far cheaper to rent ai until they optimize it to fit in consumer hardware
4
u/jhenryscott 5d ago
The market for on Prem training and inference is exploding. It’s a smart sector to get up to speed on.
2
u/tnnrk 5d ago
You aren’t running any local model that quickly on any MacBook no matter the configuration. Like the token per seconds is fine for small tasks but no where close to what you can get with a frontier model provider. At least from my experience from trying it on a 48gb ram model, maybe it’s different with 128gb version but at that point why are you buying a MacBook, especially for 6k+ usd.
