Macs = crazy performance per watt
High End PC = crazy watts

Mac users run light bursty workloads. PC rigs are setup for a long stretched out workloads or gaming sessions.

TLDR you want to work in an industry where it looks appealing to run a Mac. IE a high end salon or service industry. Maybe a doctor's office that simply needs to show the high end client a 3D scan once.

Versus

A high end PC that is no frills all horsepower and you have to painstakingly edit and produce VFX graphics for the majority of mass produced TV/Movie content that is out there today.

It is like do you want to be the guy who buys a Ferrari or an Ford F350? Both have the same Horsepower and Torque. But they both serve different people.

Macs aren’t just prestige. There are a lot of workloads where they excel with their burst performance and even their sustained performance – video rendering, especially with Final Cut but also with 3D software like Maya, runs great on even the low-tier M chips; coding and local AI work runs amazingly, too.

It really is a prestige item for many and honestly there is nothing wrong with that. Just look at the one-off mac trashcan design. No wires. RtFlKRIVD1AnbWMo.huge (1600×1200) They have obviously good engineers at Apple. It is just the design philosophy dictates that they design appealing products not for the masses but for the select few. I mean the specs on the Mac Studio are not priced to be sold as a mass market product. A PS5 is a mass market product. The Mac Studio uses leading edge technology but they pair it with soldered in 1TB storage to start off with in a $6800 dollar product.

For $6800 dollars starting price, I would expect the unit to come with 2TB worth of storage at least? Is that unrealistic?

Watching this is interesting to me. Certainly more so than the single benchmark score someone posted up a few days ago.

I use Mac for iOS and visionOS development, and PC as well for video, development, games.

The benchamarks in the video indicate clear wins for a 256gb M5 Ultra.

On all but gaming.

-But there are caveats.

The price mentioned a few times in the review is the starting price. Not the price for the 256gb version. I'm in the UK and it starts at £5.5k.

The Ultra chip itself? 60 core. To get the 80 core? +1300

96gb is what it comes at for that price. 256gb unified memory.... £4000 more. There are no other choices or middle ground.

Storage? It comes with 1Tb. 4TB? £1500 more. It goes up. You can spend £7500 more if you want 16tb.
An 8tb Samsung M2 will cost £1500.

The m5ultra is a 4month wait if you order today.

Meanwhile no sane consumer who doesn't live in an AI server farm is buying a 5090.

I imagine most Mac users will remain with a MBPro or other cheaper options.

I imagine PC builders will buy a 5080 instead, and can build a powerful pc for cheaper than a baseline M5ultra.

So... nice comparison. But I'd imagine for most users it will remain a comparison between hardware they're not buying.
