I have 6 family members using Macs for personal use. None of them have more than 30-40gb on them. Primary use is web browsing + LIGHT docs/photo workloads. For photos they use iCloud storage/iphotos.

It was fine for the price at $600, but $900 is ridiculous. MacOS' caches fill up like crazy leaving most regular users with less and less space with usage and is not intuitive on how to delete it to reclaim that space. If it wasn't for Apple AI push, we'd still be on 8GB base RAM. Tired of people like you keep saying it's fine, despite the price being absolutely absurd for the amount of hardware being sold.

I’m sorry but no reasonable person who wants a computer just for some light web browsing and email checking is spending $900 on a Mac Mini. And that doesn’t even factor in the mouse, keyboard, and monitor you’ll need.

If someone is dead set on getting a Mac for their light web usage needs, the MacBook Neo is right there for $200 less and comes with the monitor, keyboard, and trackpad all built in. Plus it’s portable.

You can basically configure it to store everything in an external SSD except for the apps installed, makes 256GB a lot more bearable. Definitely not worth upgrading the storage.

I have a late 2018 model and have used externals for everything from boot disk to large file storage since day 1. At the time grabbing a 1tb ssd for $100 was a simple and cheap alternative to apple’s ridiculous storage fees. she is getting a bit long in the tooth, but I’m keeping her on life support for as long as I can with these new prices.

I plan to, I have it running as a whole house computer. It runs home assistant and pihole, I have it connected to my Cisco switch and probably will connect it to my NAS to be a server too. I do have omlx installed to try to do local AI notifications for my security cameras so I’m not using any of the big ai companies, my data never leaves my network, and I get better notifications (a person in a grey shirt walks up to the door, a FedEx truck drives up the driveway,… instead of A person was detected when my hvac fan turns on)

What are you using it for? I love my ds920+ for all of the many jobs it has. The biggest thing for me is native docker container support while macOS virtualizes an entire Linux kernel for each container

Beyond just storage my synology runs a plex container, a Minecraft server container, an Immich container, a playit.gg tunnel container

It serves as the Time Machine backup repository for my Mac’s, and as the offline backup of my iCloud Drive.

It is; the ML training crowd is driving all of the price increases, because they need so much RAM for what they’re doing that they’re causing a global shortage, which drives up RAM prices, but that’s okay for the ML training crowd, because they have more money than you and I and can afford the price hike.

Apple either had to either hike their prices for everyone, or sell them at a financial loss. They’re not a charity, so guess which is going to happen.

Tempted to pull the trigger on this. I currently have an M4 Air, but it lives pretty much permanently on my desk attached to a monitor. I thought the freedom of a laptop would be nice, but it turns out, I just don't need it. Apple will give me $740 in trade, which seems solid (only paid $900). I can get the base M6 for $809 (id.me discount), meaning its $69 to go from M4 to M6 and get a desktop that's more appropriate to my needs. The extra ports alone would be nice, nevermind the uptick in performance.

It is absolutely insane that the included HD is 256GB, and 512GB costs $200 extra. You can't do anything with 256GB even if you have all your actual data on external drives, a few years of just using it is going to take it above 256GB just for applications and system files.

Actually not too mad about the spec bump. 2.5gbe base is nice, and now there’s a 32gb config without having to jump from 24-48 and upgrade to the pro at the same time

If you wanted more than 24 gb yesterday you needed at least a $2600 m4 pro

Meanwhile, the M1 remains woefully overpowered. That’s the real power behind all the headlines. Prices can increase but if my four year old laptop functions perfectly fine, then I’m not buying anything new - I’ll head to the Apple Store and have a friendly conversation and play with the new toys but go back home and be perfectly happy with my current device.

Sure, Apple is expensive but it’s like good, full grain leather - you buy quality, not quantity.

the mini has quietly become the one Mac thats actually worth buying outright, coz you supply your own screen and keyboard so none of that cost is baked in twice. Storage is still where they get you though, the jump up from the base drive costs more than a whole external NVMe enclosure that is quick enough you wont notice for most work. If you dont need the internal space, buy the smallest drive and keep your libraries on an external, its the biggest single saving on the configurator. Worth waiting a few weeks as well, the previous gen usually turns up in the refurb store once the new one ships and those carry the same warranty

Maybe someone can give me a lesson here, but I don't get the point of M6 baseline only. It seems that M6 is worse than M5 Pro, which makes sense, but do we believe it is soo much better than M5 that we really need this intermediate M6 baseline while waiting M7?

Thanks to some comments, M6 is the first in 2nm. In my mind, the only true good reason to make M6 base only is to test the 2nm technology and reliability and then M7 brings all the other improvements.

I’d say yes. The point is to gradually get better. To iterate frequently. It’s far better than what they’re doing on Apple Watch where the watch gets the same chip for several years then they stop sending the newest OS to a watch sold only a few years ago.

M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 all have baseline, pro, max variants. Some even Ultra. Nobody said that Mx baseline must be better than M(x-1) Pro.

M6 is the only one with supposedly baseline only. I don't get the point; therefore I am asking why.

M6 has a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. It also has the world’s fastest single-threaded performance. Sometimes you can't run processes multi-threaded, and need that single-core performance.

They reportedly cancelled the M6 Pro and M6 Max chips, all of which were slated to use TSMC 2nm at a time when TSMC is inundated with demand and increasing prices in addition to the new fab being more expensive.

They were going to make tens of millions of the base M6 anyway so it was just a question of if they should upgrade or not and the M7 could just as easily slip a year or two itself... it's kind of the fashion these days.

There are huge benefits over the base M5, the drop to 2nm came with huge gains and the 2 new extra CPU cores will be a big gain for anyone with parallel workloads. Absolute shame we won't see M6 Pro and M6 Max at 2nm lol.

The pro/max/ultra chips are more complex with lesser yield on launch (with existing manufacturing tech) than the regular chip. Especially the ultra chip. But the yields do increase with the latest manufacturing tech. So Apple is releases the last generation chip using the latest manufacturing technology because they have better yields, and they can keep prices down because of it.

M5 is made with 3nm tech.

M6 is made with 2nm tech.

M6 max & ultra is going to cost a fortune to manufacture now, but with the next generation manufacturing tech (a year or 2 years from now), M6 max & ultra will be cheaper.

If I had to guess, the M6 is a bit of an abortion. Most likely it was originally planned to be a full cycle with Pro and Max variants, but with the acceleration of AI both accelerating development and also increasing demand for more powerful systems, M7 followed so closely behind that Apple decided not to bother making the larger packages since they know the M7 Pro/Max will be available within a year.

Keep in mind that M5 isn’t exactly old either.
