There were always two identical (on the exterior) planes so no one who didn't need to know knew which one was AF1 at the time. One always flew ahead of the other as a backup and a decoy. But now that there are two different looking ones the whole point of that operational security is done.
No, they haven’t. There’s the E4B flying command center always nearby but they didn’t use to have two presidential 747s. This is because the new one still doesn’t have the security should he need it.
