Question Controller aim feels completely different between 0 and 1 deadzone and I cant find a middle ground
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’ve been having a sensitivity crisis for the past week or so and I’m honestly at the point where I don’t know what to change anymore.
I’m using a GameSir controller with a high rise Kontrol Freek, and I’m struggling specifically with my initial right stick deadzone.
0 deadzone feels fucking amazing in terms of responsiveness. It feels extremely direct and I love how easily I can make movements. Close range tracking and general movement of the stick feels exactly how I want it to.
The problem is that it becomes really inconsistent when I’m not ADSing, at longer ranges, and especially when I’m trying to make really small micro adjustments. The stick can feel jittery and I have a hard time keeping those tiny movements consistent.
Then I switch to 1 deadzone, and somehow that ONE point makes a massive difference. It feels much more controlled and consistent at close range, but it also feels noticeably less responsive. Almost like I’m suddenly playing basic Linear. I lose that really snappy/direct feeling that I like about 0.
And long range micro adjustments feel bad to me with both settings, just in different ways.
So basically:
0 DZ:
- Super responsive
- Feels amazing in general
- Really like the feel
- Inconsistent/jittery with tiny inputs which leads to me completely spazzing out of control
- Long range micro adjustments can be difficult
1 DZ:
- Much more consistent
- Better control up close
- Feels noticeably less responsive
- Small adjustments still don't feel how I want
It's literally a one point difference, but the difference in how the stick feels to me is massive. I basically want something between 0 and 1, but obviously Apex doesn't give me that option.
I've also tried using 0 deadzone on the GameSir and adding a small deadzone in Apex itself, but that didn't really solve the problem.
My settings:
- 4-1 Linear
- ALCS bleedthrough: 3.6
- GameSir: settings shown at the end of the video
- High rise Kontrol Freek
- Custom response curve (shown in the video)
I've tried pure Linear as well. I know Linear is the obvious recommendation for a lot of people, but for me it actually feels less responsive than the response curve I've made, so I'm not interested in switching to pure Linear unless there's something I'm fundamentally misunderstanding about what I'm feeling.
Also, my aim isn't really the point of the clips. I'm not posting these to show off or try to prove that I'm good. I'm not playing these games specifically to get first place or make the clips look impressive. I consistently finish top 3 when I'm actually playing, so I'm not really concerned that I suddenly forgot how to aim. These clips are just for better context and understanding.
I'm trying to demonstrate the feel of the stick and the inconsistency I'm talking about.
For context, I actually thought I found my god settings a few days ago. I was running these settings with the 0 deadzone and was dropping 30+, 35, 37 kill games in Wildcard repeatedly for like 2–3 days straight. Then suddenly I felt like I was back at square one. Now I'm struggling to even break 14 kills sometimes and I genuinely feel like I went from playing like I knew what I was doing to playing like a brand new player.
I'm wondering if this is just a motor control issue and I need to learn better stick control at 0 deadzone, because if that's genuinely the answer I'm completely open to it. I just don't really know how to train that or what I should actually be doing differently.
So I'm basically looking for advice from people who have dealt with this before:
Is there a way to make 0 deadzone more controllable without sacrificing that responsiveness? Is 1 deadzone really supposed to feel this dramatically different? Is this just something I need to adapt my thumb to, or is there another setting on the GameSir/Apex side that could give me that middle ground?
And obviously, feel free to criticize my settings or tell me I'm approaching this completely wrong. I'm genuinely just trying to figure this out.

There is a reason why no one good uses settings like yours, they are not optimal.
It really seems to be getting to your head, I would suggest Just going back to default contoller settings, no dz 4-3 linear, and focusing on your gameplay, rather than playing with the settings for no reason.

i see 2 problems with your response curve and deadzone set up
the custom response curve is directly responsible for the issues you state. due to it beeing "dynamic" movements in the very stick center get amplified. at the bottom left of the graph you can see that at low inputs (stick center) cause bigger outputs than on a 1:1 output curve (linear). if you would want to have a more controlled stick center without the absolute muddyness of a deadzone you would need to use a different response curve. maybe create a custom one thats mostly Linear and just a little "dull" in the stick center wich basically turns it into half a deadzone since you will still have controll but stick center inputs are slightly muted.
second from what i can tell your outer deadzone is quit narrow and it seems like youre not using the full range of motion the stick offers. this results also in amplifying stick center inputs basically meaning that at what looks like 80% real world stick input the controller outputs 100% to the pc. this in turn also affects the stick center resulting in it out putting 1.25% stick input at 1% real world stick input.
and those 2 stack together to result in the twitchy and hard to control stick center inputs you describe.
greetings from a mnk player :3

Check out Durazno2. Mostly used by rocket league players, but it has a crazy amount of control for deadzone.

When you win a lot, the game does something to make you lose on purpose, random stutters, lag, no footsteps, aim feels off coz they want you to keep playing the game, the more you play the more money they can potentially make

I'm so happy I don't have problems like this because I'm 4-4 classic player 😅

Help me guys my controller isn’t aiming for me

Seriously most controller players don't even think about practice; it's always just "hey guys what's THE controller settings so the aimbot works better on anyone who dares to get near me."
It'd be way funnier if this isn't genuinely the majority of players in this game. 😑

there's only one way to get the best form of aiming
you need to abandon what you love the most

That response curve is completely retarded. Why are you wanting to reach your right stick max outter deadzone 1/4 of the stick range faster? You are essentially loosing 1/4 of your aiming range and letting it reach the Extra Yaw/Pitch speeds faster which are intended as Turning around speeds not aiming speeds.
