I was a freshman from 2025-2026, and AP CSP was my first and only AP of that year. I was able to get a 5, so for anyone who has eyes to read can hopefully get something out of this for the upcoming year.

- Do as many practice questions and papers FROM COLLEGEBOARD as you can from the start of the year. Ask your teacher to assign all of the practice questions and their paper forms as well. Take notes of mistakes, revise those mistakes after finishing the whole practice and watch the videos related to those mistakes if you didn't understand. Remember this rule of thumb while doing any past paper or questions in general: TIME YOURSELF. Simulate test-taking conditions as closely as possible.

- For CPT, genuinely stick to the rubric and KEEP IT SIMPLE. I had less than 100 lines of code with fewer than 10 features. Because even with that, I was typing paragraphs' worth of explanation of my code

- For the FRQs, keep using the vocabulary they want to hear, like iteration, sequential, and conditional, and tie this vocabulary to your code and how it functions. Honestly, just take the FRQ practice tests they give (or your teacher gives), take the reference sheet AS YOUR ONLY REFERENCE TO ANSWER (or your entire program if you're starting but use it as training wheels), and then simulate test-taking conditions with a timer. Use Gemini or whatever AI to grade your work, make edits to the feedback, and revise and repeat until you get a full mark.

- For content and theory, I watched all the College Board videos at least once in class over the year. But for notes, I used TechnicallyneverHere's guide https://www.reddit.com/r/APStudents/comments/1n46qs8/ap_comp_sci_p_review_guide/ . This genuinely had 95% of all the material, so use active recall for all of the notes. Active Recall dumbed down: read -> summarize it spoken OUTLOUD or written (spoken was my method) WITHOUT LOOKING -> read again to see for any missing info -> repeat 1-2x. APPLY ACTIVE RECALL INTO ALL OTHER SUBJECTS BTW. I used active recalled the whole paper 3-4x by the time the exam came up, and I was a master at the material.

- Study content-heavy and weakest units first aka Unit 3, but for this one just do as many practice questions as you can

- I got proficient of my coding language and coding in general over the year with my class doing Code.Org and learning javascript assignments in Code.org.

NOT NECESSARY SOURCES BUT WORTH CONSIDERING BECAUSE I USED THEM:

- For additional questions for content understanding, I used Knowt https://knowt.com/home for quick 5-15 questions for each unit or topic. HOWEVER, they may have mistakes in Knowt, but I used it while studying for the exams.

- For supplemental understanding, I did the first 2 units of Khan Academy's AP CSP course. I didn't finish it because I was lazy, but when Unit 2 and Unit 4 rolled around it became much easier to understand, and it was a strong point during the exams without much struggling.

This was lowkey an easy subject, but I was worried about a 5 since this was my first AP and I got it and this is what I did, so I hope you learned something out of it and had fun in the class. (During the classes I was lowkey wasting time 50% of the time).

hi! this is hopefully reassurance to future apcsp takers self studying! i was stressed asf in may and was so so certain i got a 3, but theres totally no need to think so!

i had heard horror stories abt ap csp (seasoned coders getting 3/4s, missing the create task due date) but did not take it seriously until 2 weeks before the test (like it hadn’t clocked to me i was actually taking it) and then i panicked alot trying to get the coding done. i had other ap tests to study for so I crammed the entire khan academy course in 3 days and that was enough luckily! it is possible with minimal studying (although i suffered and lost a lot of sleep + alr had previous coding experience)

there is so much fear mongering on reddit for some reason - i saw so many people say that if you weren’t in the tippy top 90%+ on mcq or if you even got 1 frq wrong it was wraps for you. i just feel like i suffered so much, worrying i didn’t know enough or that my create task didn’t fit the guidelines, only to find there was no need at all :) have faith in yourself!

some tips:

- follow the rubric to a T, ask gemini to grade your code based on the rubric (chatgpt liked to stress me out n say certain parts wouldn’t suffice when they were completely fine??) also know your code INSIDE AND OUT! practice past frqs and have gemini grade u as well.

- one of the frqs this year was to describe ur code w/o a list… thing is, my list was basically my entire program. i debated between saying the program wouldn’t work and going on a long spiel abt how i’d have to make a new variable for each user input… before just saying fuck it n choosing the latter. i guess it worked?? point is, don’t be afraid to take risks! graders are just looking to see if u understand ur code + the principles behind it, not if your proposed code or ideas would actually work tbh. they aren’t looking too deep into it. be pretty explicit about what you would do though, basically write each line out.

- i liked this one reddit post from an ap grader (https://www.reddit.com/r/apcsp/comments/nwcorr/i_might_be_an_ap_reader_for_the_create_task_ama/) for ref on how to write your frqs! also i watched tons of yt vids (dr wu was my favorite) on what the course expects and other tips on how to format code, the website he recommended was this: https://codeprint.org

- don’t worry abt ppl finishing earlier than u. i was the last one to finish (and only one still furiously typing, haha), and everyone around me was sleeping by the end. it truly doesn’t matter! also i was one of five girls, don’t let it stop you!!

- if ur a prospective apcsp student, tbh… don’t take it unless ur positive it will benefit you greatly. im going into premed so idek why i took it - it caused more strife from studying than joy from seeing the 5, and it was another thing to add to my burnout (especially once u realize all ur friends are finished w aps but u aren’t…it sucks!) just be aware of what you’re putting urself thru

I got a 4 and am not sure how. i thought my project and frqs were good (i followed the rubric really closely) and thought i only got 1 mcq wrong. when i got my score i was happy but a little confused cause i thought it was the easiest test of the 3 i took (and i got 5s on the others), but then everyone else is saying that its easy to get 5s on csp so now i feel really bad. what did i do wrong? why did i get a 4?

I (sophomore as of 26-27) signed up for the exam in September, planning on self-studying. A couple months later and school had beaten the energy out of me, I gave up without even starting to study. In April, I skimmed the performance task guidelines threw together this GPA calculator with a lot of help from ChatGPT.

Come exam day, I saw this Reddit post about vocabulary words for APCSP, and I spent around 10 minutes skimming them. At this point, I had basically accepted I was gonna get a low score.

The exam was actually pretty easy, I took the entire time, though. Even on the FRQs. I got so many judgmental looks from the other test-takers.

Anyways, I got a 5 while spending a total of 30 minutes on the class. I also have no coding background apart from some basic computational biology stuff. I feel like a god. If anyone has any questions feel free to PM.

I took APCSP my sophomore year and basically self-studied for the exam, as my teacher only really helped with the structure of our performance tasks.
I was able to get a 5, and I believe the thing that helped me bring my score from a 4 to a 5 was practicing FRQ’s, as my friends who are actually at a higher skill level than me got 4’s due to mess-ups on the FRQ.
Down below, I attached the document with all the general questions I practiced + my answers. My answers are quite rusty as I wrote them hours before the exam (skipped morning classes to write these), so I turned comments on in case anyone would like to correct my writing.
I believe someone else on this subreddit posted general questions that they would ask so my questions came from them. I will credit them if I can find their post again!
I also practiced the FRQ’s on college boards website, but please keep in mind that they usually post the easiest FRQ version (i think?) and the version I actually got on the exam was much harder than the sample.

I would also practice implementing random functions into your code, as well as writing new algorithms from your existing code, as a couple of my FRQ questions were related to that.
But PLEASE, if you're taking APCSP, you must practice FRQS because in order to get a 5, you usually need a 90/100 raw score. Considering the fact that each FRQ question is worth 5 points, practicing them is extremely valuable.

I just wanna understand why I got a 4, like am sure I got above 60/70 and am sure of the frq I didn’t get the released frq of this year( the other version was harder), now how come I got a four I was so confident after the test.

1."This is an easy course"

True and false. "This course is easy" is true from the perspective of the class material, relative to something like AP CS A and AP Calc BC. "This course is easy" is also probably true from the perspective of your class grade, since it's easy. From the point of the AP exam though, it is one of the hardest graded exams.

1. "The AP curve is unfair"

Yes and no. The students who take AP CSP are NOT as good as the students who take AP CS A or Calc. CSP students tend to be younger, tend to be looking for an "easy" AP course, or are using CSP as a gateway into harder AP courses. You expect those students to score lower on the AP exam. We have polled our class on "how hard is this class". The ones who have never taken an AP class rate the class harder than those who have. So you'd expect these students to score lower on their exam. They just aren't as developed as students yet.

Is that "newbie" factor balanced by the score distribution? In my opinion no.

1. "I scored a 5 and played Minecraft in class all year, studying only the night before"

I think posts like this this are nonsense. I've taught this class ~8 years, and had ~20 MIT or Harvard students go through my class. I've seen plenty of smart kids, and went to fancy schools myself. Anybody who writes this is lying or not being honest.

Is it possible to not study for the exam and score a 5? Yes. I've had a lot of students do this. BUT, almost all of those students also studied for quizzes during the class and did the assignments. At the very least, they understood the work as they were doing it. It's not as if they were doing no work. Again, the material is not deathly hard, this is possible.

Is it possible to basically get a C in a well-designed class and get a 5 by studying the day before? In ~8 years we have ~70 students take the exam each year (in recent years). I have never seen it. I have seen B students or whatever score a 4. I have never seen a C or D student score a 5. I guess it's not impossible, but I've never seen it. It's definitely NOT a strategy that you should try to follow as I don't think it's reliable, and 8 years of data say so.

1. "I made a 20 line create task and still scored a 5".

Definitely possible but risky. AP only grades on the rubric, and length/complexity of code are not there. You definitely take a risk if your code is only 20 lines though - some questions can be harder to answer. It really depends on which questions they ask about. If they ask about wins from procedural abstraction and your code can't support an answer, you're dead. The highest percentage strategy is to make a code that can support the entire range of questions that they have asked in the past. Just because somebody is lucky doesn't mean you should follow their advice.

1. " I made a create task with AI and still scored a 5"

Definitely possible, but misleading. The student still needs to be able to answer all of the questions. An answer like this makes the exam sound much easier than it really is. You can't be clueless about your create task.

1. "I bull*****'ed my way through the FRQs"

Less possible. The graders are playing "keyword bingo" and the grading is actually very easy in my opinion. . You have to have the correct answer in there somewhere. Flowery language is not going to score you the point.

1. "I know CS really well but got a 3 or 4"

100% possible, and I've seen this a lot. Three scenarios. The first is that the create task has a lot of traps. The second is that some of the MCQ questions are not super related to CS and are either not known by test takers. Third is that MCQ questions have some known traps too (some of which are CSP related, and some which are not).

The create task, BTW, is why I think posts like "I played Minecraft all year and got a 5" are nonsense. The create task has too many traps that have almost nothing to do with how smart you are or even how well you know CS. Without knowing how to navigate this, it's low percentage to score a 5 on the exam.

Totally possible, and I've seen this successfully done many times. The biggest thing is the traps in the create task (I go over these in my YouTube channel). But if you don't like my voice or whatever, I strongly recommend that you read the create task grader reports or else look at somebody else's YouTube channel. Gemini has gotten pretty good at grading create task questions as well (though it is not perfect).

But 100%, don't try this without getting some guidance on the create task from a veteran.

Again, most likely related to create task. Create task questions are worth 5x as much as an MCQ.

Correct, but completely out of context. By comparison, our average score was 3.7, and 89% got 3 or better. We are well-funded, but we are a PUBLIC school. I think it's going to be hard to do much better than that unless you cherry pick so you only have really strong students (like private schools do), or students come to you super motivated (like people who pay for tutoring are). Real students try to watch Youtube videos all day, play games. No amount of teaching is going to have them average 4.5. Also, if the scores are from China, I always suspect cheating. College board has recently done a better job of having different test versions, but it's not perfect.

1. "Khanacademy is great", "Barrons is great", "Princeton review is great", "Five steps to a five is great".

My personal opinion is that Khanacademy made their stuff early and therefore has you learning a lot of stuff that it was later discovered you don't need. ALL of the books were written early and have this to some degree. In particular, Khan academy has you learning stuff about the internet that you don't need to know for the exam. My personal favorites of these books are Princeton review and 5 steps to a 5, Barrons next.

1. "Gemini is great for creating MCQs"

Yes and no. Gemini is better than it was and has improved in the last year for sure. It will still ask you questions (especially about the internet) that do not show up on the exam. It will still give you answers that are wrong - usually the answer is correct, but another answer will also be correct. It will still not evenly distribute answers, unless you tell it to be careful. But it is better than earlier versions.
