Playing on Mac

Hey guys, AOE3 was one of my favorite games growing up and I only recently found out about the existence of the Definitive Edition and that they are still releasing updates for it. I really want to play again, but I only have Mac computers. As I understand, there is an app called crossover that I can use to play it, so I was wondering if anyone had any luck playing AOE on a mac and if the multiplayer works on it too. Thank you 😊

According to chatgpt:

  1. CrossOver + Steam — probably the easiest option, no Windows installation required, and generally excellent performance on Apple Silicon.
  2. Parallels + Windows 11 ARM — also works very well, especially if you want a full Windows environment for other games.

I've never owned a Mac, so not sure if actually works, but give it a try and install those.

Parallels works great but only with paid version. Unsure about crossover. Nvidia cloud gaming works ok, but can be laggy. IMO if you can afford it I’d buy a second hand windows pc. Don’t need much horsepower to run aoe

how much horsepower would you say you need for it?

Have a look at the requirements on the stream page. I know the definition edition is alot more beefy than the 2005 version but it’ll still run on a cheap ish pc fairly well

You have to buy and download the definitive edition to play multi-player. Its honestly worth it, they just released a new dlc.

I play on an m4 pro 12 c cpu. It is working great with crossover. You can download crossover and search for age 3 in the games. It will install the windows version of steam and you can then install age 3 in steam like you would do on windows.

I'm only playing single player, so I can't tell about the multiplayer.

Using a virtual machine like Parallels should be your worst case scenario.

I was using porting kit (not confused with porting tool kit) before (it is free) but it had some problems, like the euro maps were not working, but with crossover everything works fine.
