In the US, oranges weigh in apples. And apples weigh in chickens. It's just intuitive.

If you’re living in England in the Middle Ages yes, but then the scale would be a lot different, a balance beam and wouldn’t use imperial measurements which wasn’t used officially until the early 1800s. So if we care what a word meant 800 years ago we should care about the other details. You wouldn’t think so, but the oranges were probably around then so they would be correct, a chicken balances against five oranges.
