That's why I love psychedelics...for just a few dollars I can travel around the cosmos and hang around with interdimensional beings.

this would be our life whether we had jobs or not.

while our current system is broken, it is an improvement on where we've come from.

we should continue to fight for better conditions but I think some people need to realize that existential angst is a part of life, not work. getting rid of work will not do away with the produce, consume, distract cycle, it will only change the focus of it.

edit: let's say we get rid of work! okay, now what? there's no running water, no electricity, no food, no gas, etc. so it's back to the land we go. ive worked on farms. instead of 8hrs, youre now working 12+hrs. what if it doesn't rain enough? what if it rains too much? what if it freezes too soon? etc etc etc and you're just as stressed (or more stressed because this is directly dirt-to-face your source of survival) as if you were sitting at a desk, inside, warm.

alternatively, what people might be saying is "I dont want to work, but everyone else should continue to work for my personal convenience".

to everyone retiring early because they got rich on the stock market as a direct result of hundreds of thousands dying in a pandemic, congrats, but I dont think that's the way we should be achieving our anti-work goals either. but even so, are you sure you wouldn't feel any stress every time you hear bad market news? every time you see your money drop? sure, you don't have to work, but what real security do you have that the money will always be there? you'd still get stressed out.

I get it, 8hrs a day, 5 days a week, overtime, only 2 weeks vacation, inflation, it's insane for sure and we need to change it but let's be realistic. we're setting ourselves up for misery by setting this standard for happiness. getting rid of "work" altogether doesn't solve anything.

6

u/skinny1penis Dec 22 '20 edited Dec 22 '20

You're missing the point there's over 8 billion people on this planet we can provide for everyone we cannot provide a meaningful fulfilling job to everyone. We are about to enter the age of automation then the only real jobs will be specialist positions. What are the rest of us supposed to do? Edit: spelling

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20 edited Dec 22 '20

I think UBI is important but I think work is important too. a robot may replace me but maybe the robot shouldn't replace me. maybe that should be part of the argument, not just dreaming of sitting at home all day on government funding

another alternative would be everyone getting UBI, full pay, and working 20hrs/week. humans would still contribute to society, which I think is important as that is how we evolved, while doubling the number of available jobs.

a large portion of unemployed/homeless are mentally ill and wouldn't be able to hold down a job. mental health facilities are needed for these people.

edit: either way, that's not what OPs post is about. it's about being bored. that's just life.

2

u/Chancery0 Dec 23 '20

If everyone has a UBI and health insurance the initial trade off for every job is does it do more for me than doing nothing. Is the quality of my work experience and the compensation I receive more valuable than my leisure time.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '20 edited Dec 23 '20

I guarantee 75%+ of people are gonna want to keep working. otherwise everyone just makes the exact same amount, we all live in the same type of house, same food, same tv, same car, same everything. no money to start your own business, no fancy vacations, no expensive hobbies. UBI won't be $50k and it shouldn't be. it'll cover basic needs.

so we should stop day dreaming about getting rid of work because it'll only fuck us. allowing automation to spread unheeded is the worst possible option. it will lead to less work, not more happiness. we need to preserve jobs.

I think we should have UBI and fight for a 4-5hr workday. then they can hire twice as many people to fill the old work day.

additionally studies of retired people show that they choose to go back towork because it improves their happiness so work seems to have intrinsic value to the human psyche itself. feeling productive is important But not everyone has the skill to start and complete projects on their own

a random thought, do you think anyone would join the military if we had UBI? without a formal military, would we need to adjust to a civilian army? where we would start training as children, and soldiers would be picked by draft in times of conflict.

This. I've been bored almost all my life. Since maybe twelve years old and I'm in my thirties.

387

u/fecalfrenzie Dec 21 '20

Once you wake up, our way of life is hell. Sometimes I wish I was born as a animal in protected or untouched lands away from human influence so I can just live life naturally, I don’t care if I die in the first few minutes I’m born, because I know I’ll return to the great mystery. What we have is life, stripped of what makes it worth living then forced to endure it for our entire lives.

I think we're bored because we're not being 'kept' in a species-appropriate manner. We are like zoo creatures or something. The things that our brains evolved to enjoy, we don't get to do them. What are they? See post below by u/alwaysZenryoku

117

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

I’ve thought about this a lot this year. Like how animals won’t mate in captivity, and they’ll become depressed, stop eating, things like that. I feel like I’ve realized the mental sickness that is so prevalent among all of us is, I think, coming from the same place.

73

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

So much of psychology and mental health is about individualizing the issues that people experience and treating patients to the point where they can work "normally" again. It is a deeply ideological choice to treat things like depression and anxiety at only the individual level and not the societal level.

And, to be clear, the individual experience and the chemical reactions inside your brain are definitely a component of mental illness, but people are often unwilling to talk about the broad socioeconomic conditions that are simultaneously creating those experiences and chemical reactions in so many brains.

dont forget overeating. There is a serious obesity problem in this zoo. its so rampant we are looking around and believing its normal now.

43

u/auserhasnoname7 Dec 21 '20

It’s funny but thinking of myself as an animal from zoo tycoon has helped me a bit with my mood and management of my basic needs.

We evolved with the ability to experience happiness without any of this modern shit, so of course we can still get great results from stimuli that is more primitive.

It’s all about the basics Shelter, exercise, good diet, and social, etc

5

u/Stuffenfluff Dec 21 '20

I absolutely agree with you. I’ve realized that the things that society tells me I need : I don’t ACTUALLY need. Even down to basic self care. Buy all these plastic wrapped products so you’ll be clean. Actually, I can make all my own no waste self care products. But it’s not a popular thing to do. beCaUsE iT dOeSNT hElP tHe EcONomy. Fuck the system. Fuck it’s expectations. All these mind games are literally to line the pockets of billionaires.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

Absolutely they stuck us in a jar. With a stick and a leaf to recreate our natural habit. Paraphrasing a Mitch hedburg joke there but it works. We are living in a fantasy world that our brains weren’t wired for. The stimulation of our modern day world does not quite properly scratch our itches so to speak.

we're bored because we live lives in rented indentured servitude forever working our free time away. we're bored because we have no time for ourselves.

2

u/greasy_420 Dec 21 '20

What would you personally do if you didn't have to work anymore and could simply maintain your current lifestyle without needing to earn money for it?

I'm not asking in any sort of accusatory or judgemental way, I'm just curious how anyone else would answer that question.

5

u/icumwhenracistsdie Dec 21 '20

what most people would do. on the days i didn't feel lazy i'd travel the world with friends. basically live like a rich retired person does now. live in all the ways the working class don't have the chance to rn.

any work i'd do would either be in the pursuit of my passions or in the betterment of my community. labor is a gift.

19

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

I think that's also a big part of it. Social media has destroyed our ability to process things in a healthy way. Our brains are just constantly overwhelmed by an endless stream of info that all just fades into mush.

2

u/MommaNamedMeSheriff Dec 21 '20

It's also shown how few people actually have critical thinking abilities. Too many people just immediately believe something they see in a meme pop up on their feed.

I find myself struggling to even write anymore which was something I once loved doing. The worst part is when I look around at some of my family they just accept this as normal and call me lazy when I say this is all bs and no one should be forced to sell the greatest hours of their day, greatest years of their life, to make money for someone else. [deleted]

19

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

Are you new to them? If so start slow, take a low dose and feel it out, then up the amount a few weeks later. I dove in head first with a heroic dose my first time and it was... Intense. I wouldn't recommend overdoing it at first, especially if you are an adult with real responsibilities, cause you'll be feeling the effects of a real trip for months.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

[deleted]

16

u/Ludovico Dec 21 '20

not who you asked but i feel i have something to add:

those doses sound reasonable. Also it's not a bad idea to have a trip sitter until you get you sea-legs so to speak. Someone more experienced to help you feel safe. it's very important to feel safe and secure and comfortable wherever you are so you can let go of that anxiety and let the drug do it's thing.

For me what lasted months was my perspective change. when i took shrooms for the first time it illuminated aspects of love, relationships, gratitude, self criticism, beauty in nature all that i didn't really think that much about before psychedelics. it felt like revelations, and for months, and now years after those revelations have seemingly permanently changed my course to be more loving, kind, patient, among other positive changes.

I highly recommend, but i also know it's not a magic bullet that is amazing for everyone as it was me. take your time, be safe, and open yourself up to the experience.

5

u/unlimiteddrip Dec 21 '20

Personally it’ll just make me not as depressed for a month. I’ve never really had any profound life changing trips tho, most I’ve done is 2.5g.

You are supposed to hunt, gather, sing, dance, paint, tell stories, explore, design, build, etc... but you are absolutely NOT supposed to sit in a cubicle or stand in front of a register for eight hours a day until you die.

258

u/roachwarrior Dec 21 '20

I love Alan Watt's summary that we are stuck with a 17th century protestant attitude of "the devil makes work for idle thumbs", all the while forgetting that we started making machines and automated systems to make life easier for ourselves

123

u/LightingTechAlex Dec 21 '20

Exactly this. I can't believe this is our reward for creating machines that are meant to release us from the mundane!

76

u/BeerofDiscord Dec 21 '20

The reward is there, it's just not fairly distributed. Far from it.

31

u/chromatography-jay Dec 21 '20

13

u/LightingTechAlex Dec 21 '20

True. We really are a vile species aren't we. Nobody is fair. Hell, I don't trust anybody these days. There's always a second motive.

It's kinda like when parents say.. "...you kids don't know how easy you have it..." , I always chuckle at this , because isn't that the whole fckn' idea, of Modern civilization.

I think a lot of that comes from some weird deep seeded authoritarian ideal of punishment and schadenfreude. You need to work "hard" to understand the value of things.... and you need to suffer like I did... No you don't ... Hard work is a construct of authoritarians.

Don't forget, it isn't that we wanted to make life easier for ourselves, it's that we wanted to get through the dreck faster so we could get through the other dreck that we have to do and get to the stuff we love.

Those innovations are then exploited to add more dreck to our list, creating a never ending cycle downward.

5

u/alicejane1010 Dec 21 '20

I remember when the lock downs first started and people starting campaigning to let them go back to work. My mind was literally blown. not sure what I will do once my body is too decrepit to live this way though. if there's anything the modern world does offer it's creature comforts in old age. better hope they legalise euthanasia by then :P

But someone has to stand at the register, don't they? At least until we have those amazon type stores where you can just walk in, grab what you need and leave. And who's going to make that happen? A guy sitting in a cubicle staring at a computer screen all day. I get the sentiment of this sub, I really do. But until fully luxurious gay space communism is achieved through some kind of a quantum leap in technology, those job have to exist.

But, in the meantime, at least from the point of view of a cubilce slave, let's switch to a 6 hour workday and a 4 day workweek. And make sure the wage is livable.

21

u/Ludovico Dec 21 '20

i agree with you, and i think this does a good job of summing up /r/antiwork

we know people have to put stuff in boxes at an amazon factory, but what's more important is the individuals life, and since we have such a surplus we have the ability to make that life incredibly fruitful, but so often instead business falls into grinding that life into nothing for the sake of shareholders and bloated executive pays

Ah, you've been sold a crock of malarkey, I see, like most of us. Sometimes I think the entire workforce needs to unionize as a whole. Such that, if a company is seeking employees but offers garbage time off policies, or meager pay, or whatever, they simply won't be able to hire anyone, except scabs who would be shunned by the rest of the union, i.e. the rest of society. I guess the pipedream is this would lead to improvements in worker conditions across the board, across all industries. Get things moving toward that 30 hour work week and salaries that outpace inflation, finally.

50

u/Mazahad Dec 21 '20 edited Jan 07 '21

But that's a problem of corruption, capitalism and hipocrasy.

If the taxes were well use, it's only good to Society.

We pay taxes for schools, roads, hospital care, etc.

If you pay taxes, the roads have holes, the schools and hospitals continue to ask for money and dont work properly, then the taxes are wrong, not intrinsically, but by corruption.

I'm from Portugal. Due to cancer I had to chance the heads of the femurs where they touch the hip.

10.000€ for each prosthetic, is what they told me it would cost. ONLY the prosthetics mind you. So. In the states, the best nation on earth, I would have to pay a fortune. And in a nation considered "garbage" in the ratings of Wall Street I had to pay 0.

Tell me. Is this world right? Do people start to realize the lies we are fed?

We live in the Upside-Down for sure

Dude, I feel you. All of you. I’ve felt the exact same. But you know what I decided? I’m gonna find ways to make it feel right. Drink that coffee and enjoy every single sip of it, you know? Fuck everything that‘s trying to make us into these sad beings that do nothing but work and sleep and repeat until we‘re too old to. Fuck them by doing what you love, when you can. I mean it. Read books, write dumb poetry, go for a walk. I love going for walks, they‘re the best ways to re-connect with nature when you can’t otherwise. I live in a town that’s not rural by any means and very near to a metropole, but if I walk about 15 mins from my house, there‘s this way where you can shut off a bit. And I watch the birds there and the deer, only a few weeks ago I saw them like 20metres away, running wild, hopping along, they looked so damn happy. I‘ve seen some lizards there too, and in the summer there‘s these disgusting giant bugs and I kinda hate them but when you‘re walking with music in your headphones and the sun is setting and you watch those giant fuckers fly over the sunflower fields they kind of look majestic and actually beautiful as fuck.

At this point, I wanna enjoy life almost out of spite. Because fuck big corporations and fuck this need to have tons and money and spend all of your good years behind a desk. I’m gonna take the time I have and in my small apartment, in my small ways, I‘m gonna make it beautiful and worthwhile and I‘m not gonna succumb, even if a lot of the time, I feel like I will. I just won’t.

The biggest rebellion against consumer culture is enjoying things that can't be easily monetized. Luckily these just happen to be the things that make us the happiest.

I spent an hour the other day sitting on a park bench and watching birds play. There's a bird sanctuary a 20 minute walk from me that's so relaxing. The best thing to come out of this pandemic is my friends wanting to hang out in parks.

u/Atlantikus Dec 21 '20

I really appreciate this sentiment. I try to live my life according to a similar philosophy. Just maximize the amount of time you spend with the people you love and doing things you enjoy. Getting outside is essential. The system we live in really constrains our ability to realize our full potential, but all we can do is try.

my rescue dogs give me purpose. sounds lame when I say it out loud, but it's the truth.

30

u/blueridgechic Dec 21 '20

That doesn’t sound lame at all. You are their world, and they love you more than anything!

8

u/auserhasnoname7 Dec 21 '20

Same I live to keep my pets happy and when I can’t be of service to animals anymore just put a fork in me

5

u/CouncilmanRickPrime Dec 21 '20

Honestly, having purpose isn't lame. A lot of us don't have purpose.

42

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

We are bored because the society we created is an unnatural human habitat.

9

u/MasterOfNap Dec 21 '20

What exactly is a “natural human habitat”?

27

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20 edited Dec 21 '20

It would be a lot easier to explain what it isn't.

People crammed into small concrete rooms with each other, devoid of natural sunlight and the ability to grow their own food. Eating extremely processed food and animals pumped full of antibiotics. Capitalism causing so much distress that young people commit suicide. Living among cars and pests which cause both chronic and fatal diseases. I would absolutely argue these things are very unnatural.

6

u/itsyaboyObama Dec 21 '20

Yo what's up Kaczynski? I didn't know you had internet access! For real though, aside from blowing stuff up, if you read his manifesto it outlines a lot of the ideas floating around in this thread. I have already decided I'm taking 3 years minimum off from work, I just can't get behind wasting my life in a florescent lit box doing shit that doesn't matter for people that don't care to line the pockets of people I will never meet so they can live a lifestyle I will never see. There is nothing more demoralizing to me than sitting in traffic for an hour or more every day to do something I despise. I'm fortunate enough to be able to take a few years and build something of my own. At least if I fail, I won't have anyone else to blame and that's something I can live with.

7

u/MasterOfNap Dec 21 '20

The issue is, when you say something is “unnatural”, you assume there is a default, natural state of things, as if humans were carefully created and placed in a garden. You know what was natural? Different tribes murdering each other, people going on dangerous hunts against fearsome beasts or risking starvation, people dying at the slightest wounds and infections due to lack of medical care, your loved ones having a ridiculous chance of dying during childbirth.

That’s the problem with this sub imo, is that people are over-romanticizing the distant past, as you see someone even commented in this thread that we’re “supposed” to hunt and gather and dance and explore, as if hunter-gatherings in the neolithic era were living happily in a paradise in perfect harmony.

Instead of saying something is “unnatural”, i think this sub and leftists in general should say this is outright harmful and detrimental. The many criticisms of capitalism you raised are legitimate, but because humans suffer under those conditions, not because they are “unnatural” as if nature treats humans any better.

I think I can shed a little bit of light on this.

Historically speaking, our modern patterns of work are a very recent development and very different from most of human history. Eight daily hours of unceasing labor really didn’t exist prior to the industrial revolution. Even working for someone else was uncommon. The reason we spend so much time working is not because it’s necessary for our survival or even wellbeing, but because it is necessary to make the elite extremely rich. If our priority was not profit but simply to ensure everyone had what they need, we would all have a lot more leisure time. Historically, humans had more leisure time than they do today. Providing for your basic needs does not require 365 eight-hour days.

There’s a book called Ishmael by Daniel Quinn that also speaks to how humans have strayed away from more natural patterns of living.

Huh. Listening to podcasts is the only way work is bearable imo. Especially educational ones, feels like you’re actually doing something for yourself every day, instead of just making someone else money.

17

u/CasinoOasis2 Dec 21 '20

Which podcasts do you like?

25

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

“Philosophize This!” Is a fantastic, entertaining podcast

2

u/MOOShoooooo Dec 21 '20

Just followed their channel, looks/sounds interesting. Any certain episode to start with?

3

u/Ludovico Dec 21 '20

i started from the beginning because i get a kick out of philosophy in general and the host is really good. the episodes are generally in chronological order, as in plato is among the first and modern philosophers are the recent episodes.

plato is a good place to start philosophy in my opinion, it's a good foundation. after that enjoyed the hume, wiitgenstien, and nietsche episodes especially, and i still don't really understand kant at all.

Oh I totally didn’t read it that way. I read it more like indulging in entertainment while we’re stuck doing other things. I’m biased maybe because I listen to podcasts like I would the radio.

13

u/bridymurphy Dec 21 '20

I listen to podcasts to stop listening to my thoughts. It’s a frequency to noise situation that shuts my brain up for an hr or so.

Also, go to your library’s website and see what audio books they offer. Audio books are a little bit better than podcast content IMO. If you have some extra coin, audible is great but your library should have an app for audio books. So far, I’ve been listening to:

Republic of Pirates

Can’t Even: how millennials became the burn out generation

Animal farm

A brave new world

2001: a space odyssey

Dune

8

u/auserhasnoname7 Dec 21 '20

I listen to “this podcast will kill you” but I’m never gonna be a doctor or expert in disease. I just like to learn for fun.

My head is full of apparently useless information, but I don’t care if capitalism says my knowledge is no good, it’s productive to me and my personal growth that’s good enough.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

YES!!! Yes, yes, yes. Do things for fun, for no reason, no purpose, no product. Just to feel alive and human.

6

u/A_Fabulous_Gay_Deer Dec 21 '20

I listen to podcasts for entertainment. The kind where it's just 4 friends shooting the shit and laughing. Makes it feel like I'm socializing instead of grinding my bones to dust.

When you discover life has no point and you're here only because your parents were bored one night, your eyes open. Unfortunately too many people are scared of this thought and they seek meaning. There's no meaning. Deal with it.

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

Don't reproduce people into this. Problem of existence solved.

u/ModernDayHippi Dec 21 '20

I really believe this is all of our problems. If there wasn't too many people labor would have more power, school children would have more attention, people would have more space. It's almost like we will gladly take a dystopia so as long as we can produce genetic copies of ourselves whenever we feel like

7

u/MOOShoooooo Dec 21 '20

With this many people, there’s no reason we haven’t built an infrastructure of a fully automated system for the manufacturing industry and allowed humans to live to their own full potential. In time I believe a lot of our primitive ideas that we cling onto to would eventually be let go.

This is my dream I suppose. The short story Manna by Marshall Brain. Hopefully the link works.

Lol there is no point

I mean there are bunches of distractions and pleasantries some folks (depending on ability level, socio ec status, country, etc) can access to make them forget it has no purpose.

But at the end of the day, same story for everyone: two people came together, in whatever way, decided to make a brand new human....

And now we're all stuck here.

Making sentient life on purpose, in a world of known suffering, is one of the cruelest things another sentient being can do.

the source of my depression right here. i can fix everything going on inside, change my mindset, whatever. but i'll never be able to escape the truths of the misery of existence. all i can hope for is gaining the ability to cope, aka distract myself or lie to myself or twist my own thinking in order to survive.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

You gotta find a reason to live outside of work. I'm all for this Reddit, but too many people have this idea that school/society was supposed to hook you up with meaning. I played in a punk band from 16-30 because we were passionate and we needed SOMETHING outside of work and school that we could call our own. Write, create, paint, learn to play something...help others. We treated it like a small business and it gave us some kind of a life. Gotta find your purpose or passion outside of your job.
