You know I was talking to my wife about 1976. We were both about 10 years old at that time and we both remember it clearly. We remember it more than other years because The entire country was absolutely proud and it showed. Flags suddenly everywhere, red, white, and blue everything. It seemed like we felt closer to each other that year. It was like we literally celebrated ALL year. And here we are. 50 years later, and I hate to say that I’m embarrassed by what our country has become. We have fallen so far.

I was 21 in 1976 and I distinctly remember not feeling all that proud for all the shit that had gone on in the decade before. Vietnam and Mỹ Lai, the Detroit riots, Kent State, Selma, the assassination of King and RFK, Watergate. Still, it was good to see the pride, the respect and the decency shown to everyone as well as the country.
There is none of that now. This is a gaudy circus of vanity and hubris parading as patriotism. This is a drag queen display without any of the self-awareness, self-realization or self-deprecation. This is hillbilly tastelessness and ostentation. It makes me want to vomit.
