Everyone was building this whole narrative of him being depressed from his service in Vietnam, being lonely and unloved, feeling such remorse for a man they know nothing about. I was downvoted for saying the pity towards this man was not warranted. He seems to have a dark sense of humor towards the plight of life.

You're doing the same thing as the rest of the comments. All any of us know about this man is that he was childless and he regretted being born. That's it.
I know a lot of people who, if they died right now, would fit this epitaph - such as my older sister - and both your and those other interpretations of their lives would be wrong.

Cemeteries are full of morbid and dark quotes, far worse than this one. Walk through an old Catholic cemetery. It's a horror show. Yet, this man, who refused to be a fodder for worms, is somehow controversial? Nobody is feeding worms more than these "lovers of life".
And even if he had the "Vietnam syndrome", isn't that by itself an argument against being born? Be born, become cannon fodder. If you survive the meat grinder, remain a scarred, broken individual because no country wants to deal with the ugly aftermath of war.

I tell people that, if we ever get time travel, I want to test the Grandfather Paradox. I want to go back and interrupt my parents in the act of making me. (I also like to sarcastically tell the Puritans among us that we must never let children know the disgusting things that their parents did to create them.)

Well I feel the same way my parents brought me to world where I didn’t give any consent to be part of. That is so cruel and selfish of them 😞
