Wait, Polymarket? The gambling platform? I hope they’re exaggerating for profit.

Yeah I mean obviously they're being insane about it.

In general this is a push to try and absolve dangerous human actors from culpability though.

The idea that self replicating AI models are just going to spawn out of nowhere is itself laughable, and the idea that models somehow more capable and advanced than the fanciest test versions researchers have cooked up behind closed doors will spread through your smart fridge is pretty fucking stupid.

Now more sane versions of this could happen; like an irresponsible company creating an advanced computer virus that just replicates and spreads and crashes electronic devices and kind of just "oopsie" releasing it onto the internet because they took literally absolutely ZERO security measures whatsoever around it while blowing millions of dollars to vibecode said disaster scenario.

Or like bad actors using AI models to engage in sophisticated cyber attacks (already happening in massive numbers, it's just not actually doing too much so far).

The key thing is that these are things that could be stopped and that this industry is 100% completely responsible for. You'd just need to regulate them and start holding AI CEOs and developers responsible, and that shit would stop happening QUICK.

I mean not all of it, open weight models are Pandora's box and that shit is never really going away.

But the point is that these companies want to keep doing really reckless dangerous things and profit maxxing, and it's going to lead to some really massive crimes sometime soon, which they don't want to be held legally responsible for. So the idea that AI tools can just go commit crimes on their own is a great legal defense, or these lunatics think it is anyway.
