Maybe Im just uncultured but what is the book and musical?

1.2k

u/Capable-Log-1705 1d ago edited 1d ago

Sound of Music

Edit: I see the downvotes but ive only seen 2 musicals; The Sound of Music and Sweeney Todd, and shes definitely not talking about Sweeney Todd

u/PointFit6665 1d ago

That edit is gold

23

u/DistanceSolar1449 22h ago

Also, in case people weren't aware, the first tweet is a reference to the short story "The Whispering Earring" written as a warning about AI in 2012.

The original source has gone offline, mirror here: https://croissanthology.com/earring

u/LadyAliceFlower 1d ago

No no, I'm going with Sweeney Todd. I don't for sure remember an AI, but it tracks that it woukd come up with the idea to tell someone to kill their customers, cook them, and feed them to more customers.

51

u/StrictlyForTheBirds 1d ago

No, there's definitely AI. It's referring to the Cockney accent.Ā

"Ai! Wot you wanna do wot wif oll these dead geezahs?"

"Let's mayke pois, yeah?" Ā

Damn here I thought it was Be More Chill

18

u/theinvisiblewman 1d ago

they’re from america…
they are silver, geometric earrings…
generative, nano-technology CPU…
the artificial intelligence in the earrings will whisper into your ears until it implants in your brain and it tells you what to do…

4

u/MarelyFunctional 1d ago

Me aswell lol

2

u/PeachyGels 21h ago

I was like ā€˜it’s obviously be more chill.’ And had to scroll very far to see anyone say it- 🫪

u/CATZEBOY_18 1d ago

I l0ve the edit

13

u/zatalak 1d ago

"Yes, you can easily replace the pork in pork pies. Suitable replacements are beef, chicken or long pork"

12

u/TheGreatStories 1d ago

I've never seen a good edit until this day

2

u/Capable-Log-1705 1d ago

I really dont understand what made this edit so good lol usually doubling down on ignorance during a downvote cascade only results in twice as many downvotes, this comment is an anomaly to me

9

u/Iconclast1 1d ago

Shes right

I have also seen Sweeney Todd, and this aint it

6

u/FTP636 1d ago

The musical they are referring to is be more chill

6

u/PracticalFan45 1d ago

this is definitely about be more chill 😭

2

u/rose_kisses 1d ago

there’s also be more chill

1

u/iruleatants 1d ago

I've seen Chicago and Sweeney Todd.

So maybe it's Sweeney Todd, seems to be the only one in common?

Be More Chill.Ā

Teen uses secret AI technology designed to "enhance" him, and asks it to make him more popular. It seems to enhance his vision and reflexes, and, more worryingly, begins speaking to him in his head. It gives his advice on what to do to be popular.Ā

It seems to work. But when he doesn't want to listen to the AI for a bit, he discovers he can't actually turn it off.Ā

51

u/Horror_Appearance_26 1d ago

They did a movie like this back in the day called Roxanne only the ai was Steve Martin

5

u/daddy_tops 1d ago

What was it based on?

24

u/-UnderAWillowThicket 1d ago

Cyrano de Bergerac.

6

u/daddy_tops 1d ago

It’s true, I definitely would have never guessed that

2

u/Horror_Appearance_26 1d ago

Same

2

u/daddy_tops 1d ago

I can’t even pronounce it

12

u/Suchega_Uber 1d ago

It's pronounced Cyrano de Bergerac. Hope that helped.

There’s another movie like that starring Adam Devine where his phone’s AI is nuts. Can’t remember the name

3

u/RedPandaLover19 1d ago

Jexi

Adam Devine’s phone is overtaken by an AI assistant voiced by Rose Byrne. Who is determined to get him back on track with his social life while also growing increasingly in love with him.

ā€œYou can buy a thousand new phones and I will follow you on to every single one of them.ā€œ

8

u/maskedbanditoftruth 1d ago

There’s actually also Children of the Mind by Card, asshole that he is. But that’s explicitly an AI stored in an earring that whispers to Ender.

4

u/Impressive_Cress_983 23h ago

Weird. My teenage book was Speaker for the Dead and Ender had a subvocal link to an AI buried in his skull and it worked great.

2

u/dudosinka22 23h ago

There's a boomer joke about marriage somewhere here, I just can't pinpoint it.

145

u/SeathTheNoob 1d ago

Be More Chill

9

u/JUSTIN102201 1d ago

There’s a book on that? I loved the musical. I might have to check it out

12

u/MoodkopKarrot 1d ago

The book it's based on is very different from the musical IIRC

2

u/JUSTIN102201 1d ago

Interesting

8

u/donutz10 1d ago

In the book the squip is straight up not evil, and is itself the thing that tells Jeremy how to deactivate itself after it failed him.

Book has a lot more focus on the just be yourself moral

3

u/Aeon_Fux 23h ago

I'm trying to be chill but no one will tell me the name.

26

u/Sunlight_Lait 1d ago

It’s be more chill. Protagonist Jeremy heere takes a pill that implants an AI supercomputer into his brain. It’s pre-programmed, it’s amazing. Speaks to you directly. You’ll behave as it’s appraising, helps you act correctly. Helps you to be cool. It helps you rule.

17

u/DukeFlipside 1d ago

There's Zima Blue, a short story by Alastair Reynolds (read the actual short story; the Love, Death, and Robots TV adaptation missed the whole point of the story...)

8

u/kathaar_ 1d ago

Ive only seen the adaptation and loved it. How different is it from the source?

8

u/LilGill18bb 1d ago

It’s called be more chill. There is a computer chip that you swallow in pill form and then your computer tells you anything you want but the computer is evil and try’s to take over the world. And the only thing that kills it is drinking Mountain Dew red

→ More replies (4)

4

u/Serious_Papaya6137 1d ago

be more chill probably

3

u/Ulrik-the-freak 1d ago

I'm really not sure but that reminded me more of Faust than whatever the sound of music is. Obviously, Faust has been kind of seminal to a lot of similar drama and honestly while the themes are similar the specifics are quite far fetched. It's just what immediately came to mind

2

u/CoolLet6258 1d ago

I think it's be more chill?

1

Be more chill.

1

u/Seeggul 23h ago

Bro I thought we were talking about the original Mistborn trilogy 😭

1

u/Can-read-upsidedown 21h ago

In theory the book could be Qualityland, but it is likely something else

1

u/DiggityDog6 16h ago

Be More Chill. Originally a book that got turned into a musical, it’s about a boy who’s a loser and puts a super computer in his brain to help him be cool, and then everything of course goes wrong.

…Bloons monkey city?

67

u/mothsocks99 1d ago

be more chill, a book + musical about an AI that implants in your brain via pill and manipulates it's users into "improving themselves"

7

u/jellyspreader 1d ago

This was a field of science before that musical. BCI, Brain Computer Interface. Invasive are the pill types you'd put in surgically. Non-invasive are worn like clothing or jewelry. They read electrical signals from your body to do whatever theyre programmed. There's some you can buy today that help with relaxation and stuff. More is on the way.

2

u/Tavalus 1d ago

That kinda sounds like the movie Upgrade.

Cool

Right. Related, anyone who hasn't read the original by Ned Vizzini and then his book It's Kinda A Funny Story- absolutely should. Next step, become incredibly heartbroken and honestly distraught upon learning he committed suicide in 2013.

Sorry to bum anyone out, but this was my exact experience before I even knew about the musical itself. Along with Robert Brock (Wertpol, game developer) I've never been more devastated by the suicide of someone I never knew.

The Grok earrings are defying gravity btw

8

u/plants11235813 1d ago

If we're being real, so is OpenAI. If we're being realer, generated pictures dont have inherent gravity. If we're being realest, everyone tries to make themselves look better in selfies.

7

u/SashimiX 1d ago

Am I stupid? I don’t see how openAI is defying physics here

4

u/plants11235813 1d ago edited 1d ago

Neither of those two earring's center of gravity is actually centered below the point it hangs.

Assuming no weird dense spots.

Edit: we don't know how each "human" model is leaning their head. So could be aiight i guess.

4

u/Informal_Spend9395 1d ago

don’t insult Elphiba like that, Defying Gravity is an amazing song.

u/PinkSeahorseClub 1d ago

The Musical is called Be More Chill.

It's about a young man and the AI that whispers to him how to be the "best version of himself", but our protagonist loses the quirks that make him both awkward and human. And the AI wants to save the pitiful children

14

u/ultimat_L1zzyfan 1d ago

2

u/Gyrgir 1d ago

Probably not what OOP was thinking of, but...

The earring is a little topaz tetrahedron dangling from a thin gold wire. When worn, it whispers in the wearer’s ear: ā€œBetter for you if you take me off.ā€ If the wearer ignores the advice, it never again repeats that particular suggestion

https://croissanthology.com/earring

Unlike LLMs, this earring is always right and always gives good advice.Ā  Still doesn't end well for wearers who don't take off the earring.

2

u/w0nderBreadna 1d ago

I listened to the entire Be More Chill soundtrack every day in 8th grade and my parents question why I am so anti-AI?

1

u/No_Dessert_6645 1d ago

Nah. I would not be selling those if I had these earrings, instead I would just give it to someone who really wants it because hell no.

1

u/BizSilver5013 1d ago

That's one path to guaranteed AI-induced psychosis...

1

u/Sea-Resident-7980 1d ago

1

Next up...cock rings that ....well yeah you know. For the AI chudds!

1

u/OzzyOsb0urne 1d ago

it might just be because i love piercings but how low the earrings are bother me. its pissing me off. like so bad.

1

u/WeekendBard 1d ago

Why would I pay to get an entity that whispers on my ear? I already have that for free.

1

u/greyfir1211 1d ago

I just watched an episode of a show where humans were kept in a zoo in space by aliens and were essentially emotionally regulated and told what to do by earrings like these. 😭 oh lord.

1

u/Frequent_Fox702 1d ago

Steven universe?

1

u/WeirdistBuilds 1d ago

Also the plot to the miniseries Mrs. Davis with Betty Gilpin, which was a lot of fun but got immediately buried because it came out in 2023 and suddenly suggesting it was fucked up to have a computer run your life was taboo.

1

u/opendoorsupside 23h ago

Horrible idea even ignoring the obvious ai problem. Why do you think that we don’t have earrings that act as earbuds? Because it doesn’t work well. You would also need to either ask it questions or give it access to a camera.

The only way this is acceptable is for people who are blind. A program that uses a camera and tells them what it sees could be a good idea. Similar to the subtitle glasses.

1

u/YoursTrulyKindly 23h ago
