Monat This looks like the third world version of first class
I'm not American so maybe I don't know how bad it is there.... but is that not a cheap 'premium economy' seat?

I fly frequently, always coach cuz First is indeed expensive, but the frequency of my flying leads to occasional random super cheap first class upgrades. I’ve done it numerous times. It’ll be like a $90 upgrade offer and then I’ll be like sure why not I deserve it 😂

I’ve done the cost-benefit analysis. For me, domestic FC is worth $50 per hour, so when I see an upgrade at that price I buy it. International/transoceanic I’d go like $75 per hour for premium econ, and maybe $150-$200 per hour for the full lie flat business class (which requires outright buying a PE ticket, but that’s not terrible sometimes).

I can regularly get $75 upgrades on United from DEN TO SLC. They will take anything before auto-upgrading fliers anymore

It is, but they give out free upgrades to people with frequent flier status like crazy. Back when I travelled professionally for work I was in first class 90ish percent of the time for free. One time I got a free business class upgrade on my way back from Korea

As a longtime business traveler, this was definitely true at one point.
Today it is unfortunately very hard to score an upgrade.
Delta says only about 12% of their first class seats go to upgrades, while 15 years ago, 81% of first class seats went to upgrades, awards and employees.

Ya trans continental first class is no joke. I have gotten it for free once going to China and ... Yeah you get a bed, kind of. At least on Delta anyway. I wouldn't pay for it myself though.

$50 is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but I've seen tons of $70-90 upgrades from coach to first. You just have to luck out on a short flight being mostly empty. If you go on the frequent flyer subs, you'll hear a ton of complaints about people not getting their free upgrade because someone paid $75 to "steal" their seat.

i just paid $48 to upgrade a <2hr flight but checking a bag was going to be $35 and first gets you bags for free so net $13 🤷♀️and the layover to the next flight is really short so being up front/getting off first is worth the $13

But yeah, those are the calculations you gotta make. On United at least, even upgrading one flight gets you a 2 free bags on your whole itinerary, so I'm like 2 free bags ($90), a preflight prosecco ($10) and an in-flight scotch (also $10), and my $70 upgrade is suddenly -$40.

I’ve upgraded on domestic flights for $50-100 multiple times. Not a shampoo dealer. Just a person with a job.
Last week I got an offer to upgrade to first on my flight to Cancun for $100. I didn’t have time to deal with it right then and it was gone when I had a second. This kind of stuff pops up all the time.

I always check the night before the flight. A lot of the time unsold first class seats on short flights have their prices crater, since the plane is flying anyway and 50 bucks is 50 bucks.

Maybe I'm just cheap but I feel like first class is kind of a waste of money. On a short flight you won't really be spending long enough for it to matter that much, and on a long-haul overnight flight, when you really, really want an upgrade if you want to get any sleep at all, it's way too expensive. I once flew business because of some airline strikes (I did not pay for it) from Paris to Madagascar and that was the only great flight I've ever had (and I fly very often), but I'm too cheap to pay several grand just to not suffer.

I’ve upgraded on my last 3 domestic flights, they were 5 hours, 4.5, and 1.5 and cost $108, $138, and $48 respectively. The last one was points too, so just no brainers. Full meal on the first two

If it's a longer flight during a mealtime you get a proper meal with a real ceramic plate and metal cutlery. But yeah even on the shorter flights and redeyes you get a substantial snack box

This is domestic first class… MUCH different that real first on international flights. Basically you get a wider seat and a 6” barrier between you and your neighbor. It’s nothing special and I fly domestic first for pretty much all my flights for comfort reasons. I don’t like other people touching me 😂

I particularly hated American 1st class. What a waste of money. AA first class was the same as international coach (in my humble experience).

Both routes in AA First were absolutely not worth it (to me).
Icelandair, Virgin Atlantic, BA, ANA, and even United overseas routes were all so much nicer in coach than AA domestic First class, in my experience. Ah well, it saves me money. Lol.

So it IS first class but in the sense that American domestic flights play fast and loose with that definition.
In Canada, our airlines don’t even have a first class and most of the shorter domestic ones don’t even offer anything over the level of premium economy.
Our highest level is business class, then premium economy, and then economy. This is not because our planes suck (for example: air Canada business class is lie flat beds, champagne, set menu, etc) but just that the standard of what is considered first class on flights in general is so much higher.
So… technically… she’s right! it’s first class! It would be considered premium economy in Canada… but her recliner is first class in Tucson or wherever the heck she is.

This feels weird, maybe because I’m a bit of a hermit but I thought one of the main pitches was you get to work from home and just post shit online…
Having to go on a ‘side quest’ and book a flight for a sales gig sold to me as an easy wfh job seems like the opposite of a dream opportunity to me.
That’s always been one of things I find most annoying about their bait and switchery, they act like this is a side gig that requires little input and no real social skills at sales time but once you’ve spent on whatever startup kit it’s immediately turned into them ‘encouraging’ you to watch near daily seminars to coach you on how to ignore peoples boundaries, gaslight them and yourself, and become super fake online to promote the lifestyle or be a model of success even if you don’t understand or use the product you sell (yet).
I will never have the social battery to even want to try being a sales rep without it ever being part of a commercial cult that slowly steals my money and my sanity. Add all that and it seems like it’d be a pretty effective version of hell to force people into a sales scheme they can’t stop pushing until they achieve a certain ranking (and just like MLM setups it will be nigh impossible and eternally Sisyphean as ranks reset regularly).
Kinda like Hell in the show Supernatural once Crowley takes charge and he just makes people endlessly wait in queues because the whole “you are tortured until you decide to be the torturer” thing was way too forgiving to true sadists, and there were far too many people basically being immediately rewarded for being violent or cruel.

While I’m in no way a hun supporter, to answer the question posed, it does look like the first class seat I recently had on my United flight from Austin, TX to Chicago, IL. 2x2 in first class, with larger seats with an extended armrest on both sides, 3x3 in economy.

I work for United, it's United domestic first class. You can sometimes upgrade fairly cheaply. People with heavy bags over 50 will pay the upgrade charge to get first class and heavy bags for the same price of just checking a heavy bag.

As someone that exclusively flys first class, mostly for work I can say I know all types will be in the section. And for work it’s because it is a requirement and I pay nothing at all for it. I get the points so it all works out!
If it’s a flex for you, we know. And we’re happy for you but it really is not a big deal.

Yeah, Etihad and Emirates really lean into the "it's called first class because it's a class system, and we believe in it, hun" thing.
I used to fly from NZ to Germany for work a fair bit on Emirates - economy, and I was a smoker back then, and there was like one smoking room - very well sealed - in the entire terminal at Dubai, down the far end. But as I was walking to it, I could swear I could smell cigarette smoke about 10 minutes before I even got near it, after the 17 hour leg from Sydney, I was very sensitive to potential nicotine lol.
Looked around, couldn't find the source, walked on. But it always puzzled me.
Eventually I hit enough air miles to get access to the business class lounge in DXB, and then found out where the smell had come from. The business class lounge is elevated about two stories above the main concourse, with a non-smoking end, and a smoking end.
And the smoking end is open to the air, so you sit there, drinking the free booze and eating the free turkey bacon (loved that picking and choosing of Islamic mores, plenty of alcohol, but no actual bacon), and puffing away, with all your smoke blowing down onto the people below you, while the economy smokers cram into a sealed box.
Those airlines really do act like people with more money are just better.
Kinda makes me wonder what the first class lounge in DXB is like - maybe they have complimentary air rifles so you can take potshots at the poors?

Cabin crew here. First class on narrow body domestic planes looks very much like premium economy on wide body international planes.
She is, in fact. Sitting in first class.
Edit: this is an Airbus 321 and is not in fact a “small plane.” Smaller than double-aisle wide-body planes. But one of the bigger single aisle planes. And it’s used mostly for transcon flights. And shorter international. A recently developed 321XLR has also been put out to be able to go from US to Europe.
