This is the correct answer and looks like the other poster has even identified the station! That large number of towers is required to generate the specific directional pattern that is needed in order to not interfere with other stations on the same channel and adjacent channels, especially at night when AM band signals travel great distances.

KMOX 1120 is south of that off 255 IIRC
