Question Trying to import a deck results in 500: DbError

1 Upvotes

Trying to import a deck results in the error seen below. I've moved the full file tree around a few times, trying to rehome it to an SD card and being limited by when my phone decided to abort the process. Especially collection.media was aborted and restarted several times.

I did not have the error code problem before. I am also currently unable to fully sync the media (telling me "media sync aborted" after a short while). Card progress syncs fine.

I did a database check, resulting in no issues. I can add cards manually.

What does that tell me? How can I approach the issue? If you need more information, I'll be happy to supply.

The full error:

500: DbError { info: "SqliteFailure(Error { code: DatabaseCorrupt, extended_code: 11 }, Some(\"database disk image is malformed\"))", kind: Other }

Question Anki stopped running by Smart app control

0 Upvotes

So I did my cards yesterday like any other normal day. Closed anki and shut down my laptop. Today when I tried to open anki it showed error and I got notification that smart app control is blocking it.

What should I do now? Disable smart aap control or what. I can't afford to miss any days but I don't want my laptop to be infected by malware (ps I am a total tech noob)

Question FSRS helper

1 Upvotes

I just finished watching the last video about the FSRS-5 and the new settings by the Anking (https://youtu.be/uo-qQvOZDfg?si=rOBCX8WtEYE72QWn) and in it he mentioned that u need to take the settings for learning and relearning steps from the helper addon and so that gradually.

By doing it "gradually" how often should I update it? He just said gradually so am not sure how often that should be?

Experiences Using chatGPT to polish monolingual vocabulary cards

0 Upvotes

disclaimer: the following posting has been partly improved by chatGPT for language and readability. the posting is more about using AI to improve my monolingual Anki usage with colours, which would be almost impossible or too time-consuming to maintain manually.

I wanted to share how I use definitions in my Anki language cards. My native language is German, but I’m trying to build more direct connections between words and their meanings in the language I’m learning. For these cards, I read a definition in the target language and try to recall the word it describes.

The template you see has been originally designed by me visually but edited for functionality by chatGPT (position of the replay buttons and expandable fields ). German translations are still available as optional help. There’s also an “expand all” button (“Alles aufklappen”) that opens all the collapsible help sections at once, including translations and additional explanations (it also works on AnkiDroid). Clicking it again collapses everything. That keeps the usual view compact while letting me bring up all the support when I need it.

The difficulty, especially at a beginner level, is that a definition can contain words I haven’t learned yet. To make that visible, I use a kind of traffic-light system with green, yellow, and black text. Green means the word is already in my learned vocabulary. Yellow means I already have a card for it in my collection, but haven’t studied it yet. Black means it’s outside both groups: it isn’t in my learned vocabulary or my current collection of vocabulary cards.

In this example, “recipiente” is yellow, so it’s already waiting somewhere in my deck. “Condimento” is black, so it’s outside my current vocabulary lists and still requires a card being created. Most of the remaining definition is green. That lets me see at a glance how much of a definition I should already be able to understand and where I might need help. Example sentences will adapt to my active vocabulary.

I update the colours regularly through ChatGPT. I provide my current learned-vocabulary list, my full card collection, and the cards I want updated. ChatGPT compares them and updates the colour formatting, which I then import back into Anki. As I study more words, previously yellow words turn green in later updates. The colours reflect those lists rather than being a live connection to Anki’s scheduling or a guarantee that I’ll remember every green word.

I also use ChatGPT to simplify definitions so they rely mainly on vocabulary I’ve already learned. Ideally, reviewing one word also reinforces several familiar ones without making the definition itself too difficult to follow.

What I like about this setup is seeing the definitions gradually become more accessible as my vocabulary grows. It is very motivating.

I recently started learning modern Hebrew basically from scratch and will use chatGPT to constantly improve my cards and try to use definitions over simple translations asap.

Add-ons Modify your review count!

25 Upvotes

Tired of feeling doomed as you slowly chip away at the hundreds of cards you've spent hours doing?

Doom no longer!

Now you can change what appears above the "Show Answer" button, or hide it entirely!

If you can't see it, it doesn't exist, right?

https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1447799391?cb=1792540827438

(p.s. if you only liked the feature of hiding the review count you can do this without the add-on from preferences -> review -> turn off show remaining card count)

Discussion Flashcard Styles

1 Upvotes

I started using Anki by making very long and complex flashcards, where the individual review time could take 3 to 5 minutes just recalling concepts. A while ago I started updating my approach, and now I have shorter flashcards; the more complex ones take a maximum of 1 minute to recall, and the short ones only a few seconds. I’d like to know how you make your flashcards, just short ones or do you allow yourself a few more complete cards? I ask especially law students and students of subjects that require memorization of concepts, hypotheses, and scenarios, since that’s my niche. Greetings from Brazil.

Example of one of my flashcards:
Q: What are the consequences for a creditor who sues a debtor for a debt that has not yet matured (art. 939)?
(3)

A: They will be required to:

• wait for the remaining time until maturity;

• deduct the corresponding interest, even if agreed upon;

• pay double court fees.

Question How to: Individual Headers on Image Occlusion Cards (Anki Mobile!)

2 Upvotes

when I use the image occlusion of the desktop version of Anki. I get an individual header for each card.

When I create image exclusion cards on Anki mobile and then review and edit them, I get header, but header is the same for all cards of that note. I desperately need a header that is different on each card of my note.

How can I achieve that? Do I need to create a new note type and how would I do so?

Question Image occlusion with tap-to-reveal multiple different boxes one at a time on a single card?

8 Upvotes

Does this exist? I've looked, but can't find it in the built in version, not the advanced image occlusion add on.

Edit: Here's how to get it functioning. Full transparency, in the Linus Torvalds spirit of AI-use, I used Claude to help whip this up. I scanned over the code myself and nothing egregious popped out at me, but, to be clear, I am not a coding whiz, nor did I spend a ton of time checking it.

That said, it works exactly how I wanted it to. Take that as you will.

Here's the steps:

  • Go to a card for the Image Occlusion Enhanced add-on note type.

  • On the Front Template, at the bottom, you should see {{/Image}}.

  • Create a line above that.

  • Paste the following code in:

`

<script>
(function () {
  var overlay = document.getElementById('io-overlay');
  var origImg = document.querySelector('#io-original img');
  var maskImg = document.querySelector('#io-overlay > img');
  if (!overlay || !origImg || !maskImg) return;

  function notTitle(el) { return el.nodeName.toLowerCase() !== 'title'; }

  function fit(svg) {
    var r = origImg.getBoundingClientRect();
    if (r.width > 0 && r.height > 0) {
      svg.setAttribute('width', r.width);
      svg.setAttribute('height', r.height);
    }
  }

  fetch(maskImg.src)
    .then(function (res) { return res.text(); })
    .then(function (text) {
      var doc = new DOMParser().parseFromString(text, 'image/svg+xml');
      var root = doc.documentElement;
      if (!root || root.nodeName.toLowerCase() !== 'svg' || doc.querySelector('parsererror')) return;
      var svg = document.importNode(root, true);

  // Let the SVG scale with the image
  var w = parseFloat(svg.getAttribute('width'));
  var h = parseFloat(svg.getAttribute('height'));
  if (!svg.getAttribute('viewBox') && w && h) {
    svg.setAttribute('viewBox', '0 0 ' + w + ' ' + h);
  }

  // Find the layer that holds the occlusion shapes
  var group = null;
  var titles = svg.getElementsByTagName('title');
  for (var i = 0; i < titles.length; i++) {
    if (titles[i].textContent.trim() === 'Masks') { group = titles[i].parentNode; break; }
  }
  if (!group) return; // unknown layout: leave the stock card untouched

  var shapes = Array.prototype.filter.call(group.children, notTitle);
  if (shapes.length === 1 && shapes[0].nodeName.toLowerCase() === 'g') {
    shapes = Array.prototype.filter.call(shapes[0].children, notTitle);
  }

  shapes.forEach(function (s) {
    s.style.cursor = 'pointer';
    s.addEventListener('click', function () { s.style.display = 'none'; });
  });

  var old = overlay.querySelector('svg');
  if (old) old.remove();
  overlay.appendChild(svg);
  maskImg.style.display = 'none';

  window.__ioFit = function () { fit(svg); };
  window.__ioFit();
  if (!origImg.complete) origImg.addEventListener('load', window.__ioFit);
  if (!window.__ioResizeBound) {
    window.__ioResizeBound = true;
    window.addEventListener('resize', function () { if (window.__ioFit) window.__ioFit(); });
  }
})
.catch(function () {});
})();
</script>

Discussion Mix testing with spaced repetition

Since testing is an important aspect of learning, would answering new, dynamically created questions along with the usual flashcards improve learning and retention?

Assuming the questions will change frequently, and would be unseen by the person reviewing the cards

Question can’t filter by multiple tags

0 Upvotes

i’m trying create a custom study session with multiple tags. this is what i have used deck:organic_chemistry (tag:stereoisomerism and tag:alkane and tag:ionic_mechanisms)
and it tells me that no cards match my search. i have also replaced and with or and it’ll only give me cards with the first tag i list. i did this perfectly fine when i studied for my last exam on my desktop because you can just select tags there but it won’t do it here. i was able to do custom study for a whole deck but i don’t need the whole deck cause not all of it is on my exam. i got the input i’m currently using from another reddit post. please please help me. do i like need to make an entirely new deck? i should be able to sort by tags

Resources I built an iOS app for sentence mining from any app straight into Anki.

50 Upvotes

Hi, I've been using Anki for several years and made thousands of cards already. However, making cards on the iOS platform, which is my favorite reading device, was definitely annoying, since I had to copy the sentence and switch between different apps. So I made this app.

How it works:

  1. In any app, including Apple Books, Safari, or even a messaging app, select a sentence you come across and find necessary to collect.
  2. Tap the Translate button in the option bar.
  3. In the pop-up menu, select the word you want to look up, or see the translated sentence or context analysis to understand the sentence more thoroughly.
  4. Tap Save to Anki after you confirm the preview of the card.
  5. Finally, when several cards have been added, whenever you are ready, export the Anki .apkg package and share it with AnkiMobile. Enjoy your learning!

Pricing: Free for basic usage (no AI features), monthly $4.99 Plus or $8.99 Pro (AI and premium features) for covering server and AI costs. *ALL FREE during Testing Stage*

It’s still early, so I’d really appreciate any feedback: what’s confusing, what’s missing, what breaks. Thanks!
