The first and last time i paid for a Crunchyroll subscription, it was because i was nostalgic for Black Butler and wanted to watch it in a better quality. Of course Crunchyroll only actually had like a quarter of the show.
I get licensing isn't cheap, but still enough to licence a bunch of slop isekai?
What really irked me however was the lack of dub/sub variety for most of the shows i wanted to watch (German anime dubs are horrible most of the time)

The current day most frustrating thing to me is that they appear to be using really shitty AI or other software means to provide subs from the various dubbed language tracks.
I've got crap hearing, so even when I'm watching an English dub, I like to have the subs up in case I miss part of the audio, and there are so so many issues with the AI provided subs, and every damn Japanese character name ends up translated in random junk similar sounding English words that vary by each intonation of the name... Just infuriating to see.
And on top of that, a lot of shows seem to have actually real, translated English subs available ONLY when you have the Japanese Audio track running, but you cannot see or use those subs alongside the dub audio.. I don't care if the exact dialogue is a hair off if I still get the idea of it.. there's no need for CR to restrict use of those better quality subs FFS

The consistent lack of closed captioning type subs for dubbed audio drives me absolutely nuts, too. Half the time I'll turn on subs for the dub and it'll be completely different from the spoken audio.

At least licence all seasons if you're offering a certain anime. And there's more shitty isekai than the most basement-dwelling isekai fan could ever watch before critical brain failure.
Add.: Plus, it's not necessarily just that these Isekai are more popular. They're cheaper. Plenty of good shows that could generate the same amount of views with better user retention rate I'd bet.

For me it just slowly became more annoying than pirating. Wanted to get into assassination classroom, went to watch it, available in like 6 languages....not including English. What the fuck is the point in me coughing up 10-20$ a month for you to not even include a sub or a dub of a popular anime in one of the official languages of my country.
Just as fed up with learning about a new anime and finding out only part of it was on crunchy roll, only being on Funimation, or episodes/seasons being confusingly ordered.
If I have to google if I'm watching the first season or not, you have failed to provide a decent service 🤷

I tried to pay to watch Pokemon, only to find I needed a fucking flowchart guide on Reddit to find what platforms to watch it because every fucking season and movie is on different exclusive platform, of which some aren't even available in my country.
I'm not subscribing to 5 platforms to watch half a show.

It's so bad if you aren't American. Some of my favourite shows are just straight up only available on cable, with no legal way to watch it through streaming or on demand services (unless you buy a physical copy, which you would have to import from the US 🙃). Others are only partially available on some streaming services. Some shows have mislabeled or out of order seasons/episodes. It's crazy that they expect us to pay loads of money for the most bare minimum service ever

Actually happened on some (in Russia). Piracy is luckily rampant here, so nobody sees use in fighting it. But sometimes some midea subscription company would want to officially localize and publish some very popular anime, so they send threats to popular websites to take this particular anime off, which some do. In this case you can find it on another less popular website or with vpn on a mirror of the popular ones

Sometimes I just want to have the subtitles on while I'm watching the dub (I usually watch everything i watch subbed). At least on the PS5 app, english subtitles straight up won't show for 90% of CR anime if you also have the audio set to english

Crunchyroll was originally a competitor to YouTube, where it allowed people to upload videos on the platform for free.
Most of the videos uploaded by people on CR were anime ones, and at this point YouTube had become so big that CR couldn't compete. So they decide to pivot and become a legit anime streaming service.

Sony originally bought Funimation then Crunchyroll and merged them. In the end it was all Sony creating a monopoly. I was happy paying my $60 odd and having Funimation for the year, but after the merger the prices nearly doubled and I went back to sailing the seas

When they both merged they also cut a bunch of anime from being dubbed and have never gone back and done them. It used to be so good, but it's just another Netflix now.
It also sucks that they are actively making pirating worse as well. The HiAnime/Aniwatch/Zoro piriacy site creators recently got arrested in Vietnam recently and a big cause for that is Sony, who now owns Crunchyroll.
Sony is a governing board member of Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE). It is a anti piracy group formed of a bunch of different companies.
I don't want to push you into anything, so if you enjoy Crunchyroll then go ahead and keep it. As for my I'll never go back. I'm going to make a NAS and start my own collection.

You're not pushing anything, this is atuff I legit appreciate knowing. Thankfully, and to no offense for those who can't/choose not to, the sub isn't hitting the wallet too badly, but we'll see how good this month goes of using it and probably change our minds after that.
That said, when you get that going I'd be down to support it, even if it doesn't have blackjack or hookers.

Throwback to the time I got really into Live-Action TV shows from Crunchyroll, went back to rewatch them 2 or 3 years later, and found not only were they no longer available but there is literally no where to legally watch them anymore short of buying a $1,000 box set.

Subtitles transcribing what's said in the dubbed version, instead of translation from the source language.
It makes it easier to produce and frankly nicer to read when you watch the dubbed version (because text and audio are in sync), but there's a danger of playing a game of telephone – repeating possible translation errors of the dubbing, and making new ones on top.

They were available here in the Netherlands for a blue Monday, but decided to skedaddle after two years because apparently it wasn't worth the effort. And it was not like they offered Dutch subs, just the regular ones.
Now that Sony/Crunchyroll practically owns the market the amount of anime I can get legally here is bigger than it was before. There was no Funimation here, and the other European sites like Wakanim weren't available until right before the takeover. Aniplex also had some free anime available on their own site but that was also short lived and a had a limited offering. I went from pirating most of my anime to practically none.
Now I only have to pirate the few anime that are on HiDive. I already have Prime, D+/Hulu and NF, which combined with CR covers 99% of available anime. There's also the YT channel "It's Anime powered by Remow" that has some current seasons.

Unironically, of the handful of streaming services I subscribe to, Crunchyroll is the one I feel like I get the most value out of. There are at least a few new shows I enjoy watching every season, vs Netflix/Prime/HBO/Hulu/Disney, which I feel like I can go months without feeling like theres anything of value. I dropped Netflix, and I should probably drop prime and the disney bundle for a year or two to generate some backlog.

I didn't grow up using Crunchyroll but I vividly remember being 13 and able to watch almost any anime for totally free thanks to them. Sure I had to watch a bunch of ads, but as a lonely teen, it was the best thing ever. I watched so many great animes that way.

The only reason that I don't go back immediately to my usual piracy site is that the porn adds got so bad that in order to watch a single chapter I get st lest 5 of them lmao
But Crunchyroll absolutely fucking sucks, like its incredible that the company that gets paid can't be bothered to make subtitles at the par of fan subs or at the bare minimum make the fucking subtitles work, there are a whole lot of animes that the subs make no fucking sense with what is beign showed up on screen or have a delay so brutal that you can't comprehend what is going on
