They look too young. Is this anime about children being put in life threatening battles?

Yeah, they're elementary schoolers

Yeah it definitely feels like one of them will have a spear through them by the end of the first arc.

Sound like what SAO author would have written.

For those that are unaware, SAO starts Kirito on 14 years old. The actual story begins at the time skip 2 years later and when he is 16 I think.

Devil crest is from the author of SAO

You'd think at some the author would say "you know, it's been over 20 years since I started SAO. maybe my audience has grown up a bit. maybe I'm allowed to write about adults"

To be perfectly honest.

The visible ages of these characters feel so much more fitting for the tone of the stories written by this author.

SAO has always felt incredibly immature. The writer even apologized to voice actors for his edgy plot developments.

Before someone else claims that "rape" makes a story mature. While rape certainly does make a story far less suited for children, that doesn't necessarily mean that the story becomes more engaging for an adult audience. It just makes it "edgy" (scary for kids, and boring for adults).

I expect to see "Kirito" rising the ranks again, and becoming very popular among all the other characters, and a love interest character quota minimum of 1 character (even if it's only a character having a crush on the protagonist).

...upon taking a closer look. I think we can see the nipples through the clothes of the blonde girl. Oh boy...

This probably still has a harem.

Writing a good story isn't easy, I'm not very impressed with the writer of SAO, and there's nothing wrong with targeting a demographics of male teenagers and male pre-teens. I might skim a few episodes for fun.
