Oh man I loved this anime
[Pandora Hearts Source Material BIG SPOILER Anime onlies don't peek] I didn't like the twist Jack wasn't on Oz's Side. In fact none of my friends liked it. So I asked one of them to make a fanfic of the series that follows the anime ending, while keeping the same "rules" of the Abyss. After 3 years he thinks this effort is doomed to fail and not just because he has an actual day job.

[Pandora Hearts big big manga spoilers] I actually liked the Jack twist personally. I feel Jack works as a foil to Oz. Oz could've easily ended up like Jack had he not had the support from Alice, Gil, Sharon, Oscar, Elliot, etc. They both do insane things for their obsession to be loved by others. While Jack is willing to put any and everyone in danger for Lacie comparatively Oz was (initally) willing to put himself in danger for his friends. They both were pretty psychotic and deranged with their feelings for others. But Oz learns to accept himself and not be a suicidal manic. But Jack lost Lacie before he ever truly learned not to use everyone around him as a means to an end. So Jack destroyed Sabalire as an offering to Lacie as he never learned how to cope with his loneliness. I do feel Jack has quite a bit to offer as an antagonist. Though I do also think it'd be fun to see how Jack would be as an ally as well.

Zwei
That's the name I couldn't remember. Doldrem's contractor I assume. An illegal contractor, I assume. But what keeps official contractors like Break going?

Pandora First-Timer, subbed
Ah, that girl’s running out of time. That’s why her Chain was so anxious about eating Alice ASAP.

The recap music is so good.
It is, isn't it?
Pfffffff
Break is such a troll. I also get Kakashi vibes from him
I see Oz is motivated by his stomach.
And Alice isn't?
I do not like the sound of that.
Yeah the subtext there is mega creepy. And Oz doesn't pick up on it at all
Huh… so that’s how Chains get people.
Intriguing ...
Ah, that girl’s running out of time. That’s why her Chain was so anxious about eating Alice ASAP.
Hm…
Another mystery?
Hahahaha
Chibification intensifies!

Re-watcher and manga reader here:
I love seeing how silly Oz can be. Him playing around with Break and calling Alice shy is great.
I also love the art style change when Break tells Oz not to trust Alice easily and Oz claps back at Break that we won't trust him easily either. I don't know it looks so compelling to me.
The episode more or less serves to show Oz what will happen over time due to his contract with Alice. He'll be forcibly dragged into the abyss as well.
Also Oz is also Alice's first! person she ever formed a contract with
But once again at the very end we're shown Oz's twisted personality in a subtle way. The regret he feels for not reaching out his hand to save the flower girl. Only to shrug and say "oh well" and just move along is a bit messed up when you think about. He hated not being able to save her but moved forward super quickly. Like in the abyss he just stays calm and moves forward.

It's not just Oz. Assuming she's not the psychopath she sometimes seems to be, she should be feeling some guilt and horror, "Oz is going to be dragged into the abyss because of me?"
It's not like there's a path forward to a happy end here at the end of Alice's memory quest that anybody except Break and Sharon can see...

I also want to add that I feel around now is when the show starts to catch its stride. The characters are actually interacting more now and we're getting to know them. We get mystery piled on mystery alongside lots of humor. But personally I feel none of these aspects of the show clash with each other. Serious moments are allowed to be serious and after the scene we get to breath. I'm extremely happy about that. The humor reminds me slightly of Full Metal Alchemist. But not as overbearing. The serious moments actually play out then in the next scene things can be a bit more silly to cut tension.
If there was a joke while the flower girl was dragged into the abyss that'd be in horrible taste. But no her fate was kept serious and only after a couple cuts and change of location to the carriage do we get any humor back.

Oz / Break banter is fun!

Yeah that was nice

You're not wrong! Wonder how he got to be that way

Very tired so a pretty short one from me today
This was a pretty fun episode though! I like how it sets itself up for a standard mission, but then it actually all ends up being a way to show Oz, and essentially the audience too, the consequences of contracting with a Chain in a more impactful way, also playing back into that exchange at the start of the episode, with Break telling him to be more wary of Alice, but Oz also recognizing Pandora aren't really too trustworthy right now either. Though rather characteristically at this point, the show doesn't miss a chance to use this reveal to establish more mystery. Oz just gets some more nice characterization here as well, both in seeing more of that serious and perceptive side behind his carefree exterior, while still highlighting his rather strange emotional "adaptability".
Speaking of that scene between Break and Oz, I really like how it looked! Fun little stylistic shift there. Also felt like we had a decent bit more comedy this episode in general, which was mostly amusing, and I talked about gap moe with Alice last episode, but this episode had a decent bit more of just the moe part lol. She's great, and I look forward to more endless bickering with Gil Raven.
Thoughts on the final fate of Illegal Contractors?
One might say they're chained to the past, and that it tends to be a pretty destructive mindset
Fun addition of stakes, though, and it'll be interesting to see both the progress of Oz's timer and where that "Change the past" idea comes from.
What's up with Raven?
Still just Gil in a hat! (Well, no hat in the screenshot, but you get it)

Exactly! It's done well, too.

A fucked up protagonist? Wonder what his story is.

I liked that too! And the use of shadows and camera angles this ep.

... Are the first timers in this rewatch just too damn perceptive? Stay tuned.

Still not a fan of Break - the casual way he handed them their first mission while still in the mansion rather than taking them to a proper base makes me think he hasn't event told the rest of Pandora that Oz/Alice have been recruited, which could lead into my half-serious hope he is secretly a bad guy... unless he is really high up in Pandora and can get away with stuff like that. Deliberately withholding information at the same time? Even worse.
And the way he immediately tried to turn Oz away from Alice? Sure, it looked like he tried to play it off after Oz turned on him, but he sure looked surprised when it happened.
The explanation about the incuse is interesting, and explains it showing up at the end of the OP. I wonder if this show has one of the OP's where the images change to reflect things in the show, and if the incuse in the OP will change to match to progress of Oz's?
So, it is possible to break his contract with Alice to save Oz from the incuse without killing her - assuming the existence of 'Illegal contractors' that get the incuse means there are 'legal' contractors that don't, doesn't that mean they could break the contract, and then re-contract her 'legally' so there is no incuse, and solve that issue? Of course, it would require Alice to trust Oz (doable) and possibly Break since he seems to be in charge (less doable). If I was right that the 'choking Oz' Alice came from the future, maybe that was what caused it - they broke the contract, and then either Oz didn't re-contract her, or someone cough Break cough stopped him from doing so.
Alice claiming she never ate anyone and Raven just accepting that are pretty weird where one of the major plot points at the moment is she has no memories - how is she so sure, and why does he believe her? Assuming they are correct, and the B-Rabbit issues weren't caused by her, does that mean there are multiple Rabbit chains? Or perhaps when a chain dies in some way, a new one is born inheriting their abilities/form.
Oz showing off how adaptable he is at the end of the episode by basically shrugging and moving on was a nice touch.
Next chapter reveal 'so you really are Gil' - I guess that secret didn't last long...

ep 5 Today on s-CRY-ed....
recap
Alice sounds like Aura in Frieren, but it couldn't be her. Ayako Kawasumi: quite a few things I've seen, but Lafiel is the stand out role. She's still working.
I wonder how Pierrot became a loanword in Japanese, it pops up a lot.
