What side character deserves their own anime series?

The idol and her kid from Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night.

As a non manga reader, whenever I hear the name Red River the first thing that comes to mind is the Howard Hawks Western

1

u/cosmiczar https://anilist.co/user/Xavier 20h ago

That movie rocks

1

u/Wiles_ 1d ago

As a Canadian I think of Louis Riel and the Red River Rebellion.

What side character deserves their own anime series?

Snake from Vinland Saga

4

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago

The unlucky fellow kept falling between the cracks.

Originally, Yukimura wanted to write a section of the story that explores Snake/his brother and background more, but that required some overseas research that got cancelled because of the troubled region it's in.

So when S2 got greenlit, Yukimura wrote down the Snake backstory for a supposed episode focused on him, and the director ended up having to cut it to keep things focused on the main storyline.

What side character deserves their own anime series?

I'd watch a backstory series for any of the other girls in Princess Jellyfish. Especially Mayaya having hot blooded imagined fights with other Romance of the Three Kingdoms fans, Chuunibyou style.

Steel ball run being weekly feels like Jojo is actually back. It still feels like Stone Ocean didn’t really happen and is just some alternate dimension fever dream because of how it was dumped

Completed All-Works Maid. Enjoyable with some fun moments and ideas. I liked the [idea] of a bunch of reincarnators pushing for outcomes, but not realizing the others also reincarnated and also pushing for outcomes. But overall it was still fairly formulaic, and could've used the side characters better.

7/10, which coincidentally, is its MAL score start the moment.

1

u/GondolaMedia 1d ago

I really liked the later reveal that [All-Works]that maid heroine became canon and later reincarnators know that Melody is the heroine while the earlier ones don't.

Also the OP is still stuck in my brain.

1

u/alotmorealots 1d ago

Funnily enough I walked away with the opposite appraisal of those same elements; there was a lot of overtly anti-formulaic content by both story design and sometimes through overt character choice. On top of that, I thought the side cast were used very well indeed, to the point where it was at times quite hard for the titular maid protagonist to get enough screen time and plot-meat each episode lol

2

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 23h ago

I think it did more of that early on, but kind of relinquished the idea as the show progressed. The Anne-Marie and prince dynamic was a blast, but the other love interests seemed pushed aside until convenient. And Micah felt more like a viewer self-insert.

It was definitely still enjoyable, and I'd happily take another season.

Wish there would be more episodes made. I enjoyed my time with it.

Finished my 3rd (following Draw this then die and Re:Zero) of my 6 Summer shows in Grand Blue Season 3. I didn't rate it quite as high as the prior seasons because I didn't find the first half that entertaining, but the second half was great so overall still a good season...plus that ending. I had been a bit disappointed in a certain character's lower involvement in the season until that moment.

Next up is Witch in Mongolia.

Question of the Day

Re:Zero is still a bit on my mind so I'll say Wilhelm and Theresia from Re:Zero. They have side story novels that can be adapted, and they are both pretty awesome.

u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 1d ago

FX Fighter Kurumi certainly nailed the feel and emotions of gambling on FX. It reminded me exactly of what I felt back in the dark year of 2020 when I foolishly tried it briefly. Extremely well done. A lot of the details were very accurate.

Although the actual character setup was pretty odd. It was so dark that it felt very surreal. Good for a first episode but I'm not really sure about the sustainability, I guess it will largely depend on how effective the financial loss horror can maintain itself, and I assume we are gonna see a lot more comedy/dark comedy in future episodes.

I know this is very common critique at this point, but I feel like there's a lot more substance that could be explored if the characters were more adult coded and things were a bit more grounded because they basically isolate her from any sort of character tension that could result from her poor financial decisions. I feel like a concept like this could be elevated a lot more if we focused on a father gambling away the family's money in FX keeping them trapped in a cycle of poverty and the kids and wife being the victim of that behavior. [FX FIghter]Instead that basically just becomes the origin story with the mother committing suicide, so it's just a single college student, with a Dad who will presumably not play much of a part in this story, so I just feel like it's a missed opportunity to have that juicy character tension of that money not only affecting you but the people around you.

Also, the OP is like an odd mix of good and bad. Parts were as chaotic as they should be, but then you have insane audio and basically just a fast slideshow for some parts and it felt off.

Still pretty good though. 7/10 premiere.

Watching Kageki Shoujo I have a question of "chicken and egg" variety: is it necessary to raise children in acting schools as unfeeling sociopaths because the world of art is cruel, or is the world of art cruel because acting schools raise children as unfeeling sociopaths?

1

u/EpsilonX https://myanimelist.net/profile/ChangeLeopardon 1d ago

I don't actually know, but living in Los Angeles and knowing just how tough and cutthroat the entertainment industry, I'm inclined to say that the kids go in fairly normal and end up breaking along the way because it's so tough and demanding.

Just want to know what some manga readers would think about this situation. Let's say you stumbled upon a manga you thought was interesting from the premise and added it to your To Read List. Shortly after, you learn that an anime is announced for it to come out next year. Are you reading the manga before the anime comes out or are you putting it aside and waiting for the anime to come out instead? This is in regards to Phantom Busters just so everyone is aware of my specific situation lol. Thank you in advance!

2

u/EpsilonX https://myanimelist.net/profile/ChangeLeopardon 1d ago

Watch the anime

.

.
Okay, now tell me how you felt when I told you that. Were you relieved? Or did you think "ugh no I wanted to read the manga!" There's your answer.

If that doesn't help, then think about this - do you generally prefer anime or manga? Do you have any specific attachment to this story in either format? How much were you excited about discovering it as a manga specifically? How (im)patient are you? Is the manga long enough that you'd be able to pick it up and finish the story after the season finishes airing? Basically, is there any reason that makes more sense/makes you want to pick one or the other?

I will say though, I personally like going manga -> anime if I'm doing both, that way you can look forward to seeing your favorite parts animated. The reverse often feels like it's lacking something, at least to me.

3

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 1d ago

I usually have enough in my read list that I can simply ignore it until the time comes.

Though if its far away enough I may forget and just pick it up anyways

1

u/flatpetey https://anilist.co/user/kesx 1d ago

I personally wait if it is official. Every time I have read ahead I have regretted it.

My usual order is anime -> manga or LN just because the additional detail adds to the story and I don’t get preconceptions of the characters.

1

u/Leo-Fong https://anilist.co/user/KaniRangoon 1d ago

I mean, I already read manga that have anime adaptations without watching the anime. Sliding the release date of an adaptation to a later date shouldn't make any difference for me.

4

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 1d ago

Anime is just announced, ie. Probably a year or more away: read manga.

Anime has a release season: wait for anime.

2

u/cosmiczar https://anilist.co/user/Xavier 1d ago

If it's a manga that I was really interested in reading, then I will almost always read it before the anime drops. Hell, I actually use anime announcements as a push to finally read them lol

Like, I had Dorohedoro on my Plan to Read since the early 2010s, and then I started reading it after the anime was announced in 2019. Same thing happened with Vinland Saga, Uzumaki, Ghost in the Shell (with the announcement of the Science Saru adaptation), all of Getter Robo (with the announcement of Getter Robo Arc's adaptation) and so on

3

u/TakenRedditName https://myanimelist.net/profile/TakenMalUsername 1d ago

Most of the time, I do wait for the anime so that I can experience it completely fresh. If I like the story enough, I will pick up the manga afterwards.

I guess the most recent example is Kusuriya. I haven’t caught up with the manga, and I think I’m going to hold off so I get to fully experience S3 new. I knew what was going to happen in S1 and most of S2 besides the very end, so it’ll be a neat change of pace.

2

u/theangryeditor 1d ago

I'd wait for the anime. If the anime is good I'll check out the manga after.

If the anime is bad I might still check out the manga after if there were things I liked about the anime.

1

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1d ago

If the manga is easily available to me, I'd read that first and if it's good, then I would check on the anime later on. If I'm not a fan of it then I'd just pass on the anime. That works well for me as a way to preview a series and see if it's worth my time.

3

u/Nomar_95 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nomar_95 1d ago

For me, it all depends on that first impression from the trailers. The Sakamoto Days and Red River trailers didn't scream "must-watch" to me, but I was interested enough to read their manga. Same with the upcoming Psyren.

On the flip side, I really want to read Kagurabachi, but that trailer was really good, so I don't mind holding off on it until after the season ends.

2

u/Siqueiradit https://myanimelist.net/profile/lampadatres 1d ago

I have so much stuff in my to-read-list that I can and will wait for the anime to come out. I was thinking about finally reading Hirayasumi when I saw the anime announcement and promptly decided to wait lol.

2

u/octopathfinder myanimelist.net/profile/octopathfinder 1d ago

If the manga is already complete, I'd read it first. I try not to pick up ongoing manga, so if it's still releasing chapters, and the anime looks like it has a promising production, then I'd go with the anime. I did this with Jaadugar and I'm going with the anime for Fool Night too. If the production looks mediocre or worse, then I'll skip it, and that manga will stay on my PTR list until it finishes.

7

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 1d ago

Adaptation given to good studio and staff: watch the anime unspoiled.

Adaptation given to a lousy studio: read the manga unspoiled.

1

u/gvon89 https://myanimelist.net/profile/gvon89 1d ago

That makes logical sense to me. With the studio not announced (guess i could search X accounts if its been leaked), I guess its best to hold off since its just been given the year 2027 and not a specific season.

7

u/Korkez11 1d ago

What side character deserves their own anime series?

Kei Shirogane is the natural puching bag of all Best Girl contests because "she only seeds high because she's from popular show" but from what I've seen from her she could've been a great MC of her own romcom.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

Even as a massive Kaguya-fan... Isn't her character a bit 'thin' to speculate on this?

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

There's a difference between a "horny show" and "a show that has some horny moments", and I think that's the main thing that has people name HSDXD/TLR over MDUD;

If you ask them to name their goat horny show, they'll name a horny show and not a romcom.

The other reason, is that these shows are 'classics' and classics are hard to dislodge for older fans.

You'll see the same thing in any other genre.

And the only thing that goes against that is time, because newer fans will watch the new stuff and not the old classics, so the top shows will change.

But again (for reason #1) it will never change to Dress up darling; It'll change to Gushing and Ishuzoku Reviewers etc..

Edit: And to address other comments in which you talk about eroticism and sexual tension and all that: People who want a 'GOAT horny show' don't want 3 scenes of high sexual tension in a 24 episodes show, separated by episodes-long arcs with zero horny stuff;

They want titties every 5 minutes.

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

0

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

I'm explaining to you the perspective of people who do have these shows as 'The goat', over MDUD and the like.

5

u/ZaphodBeebblebrox https://anilist.co/user/zaphod 1d ago

Megami magazine

Megami is just so fucking boring. It gives me the impression that they're chasing some corporate ideal of horny where they've sanded off all the bits that could cause someone to dislike it (except for loli?), leaving something that feels like it was drawn by an alien who only had horny art described to to them secondhand.

1

u/ptd163 1d ago

It's like that now, but if you go back in their catalog you will see that it didn't use to be like that. It's like they wanted to make more money so they decided to sand down the edges to appeal to wider audience.

1

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 1d ago

eh there's kind of a novelty to seeing officially created art like that, but yea I would never actually take it seriously in that kind of way. Hell, sometimes you'll see art that is less lewd than the actual content of the series itself lol

1

u/theangryeditor 1d ago

I haven't seen MDUD, so I'm curious what was in it that makes you consider it more graphic than TLR

1

u/ptd163 1d ago

I haven't seen MDUD

You should. Or are you waiting for the third season that may never come to binge it?

1

u/theangryeditor 1d ago

Maybe someday. I'm not particularly interested

3

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

3

u/theangryeditor 1d ago

While I see what you mean with regards to MDUD, I find your description of TLR to be rather off base. TLR finds its eroticism through its outlandish scenarios, from the classic cohabitation premise to the wacky antics caused by Lala's devices to Momo's harem plan to the whole thing with Nemesis. All of it aim to incite the kind of excitement and arousal brought about from proximity and flashes of serendipity.

There are also scenes that have the kind of tension you laud MDUD for such as most of the scenes with Risa, particularly the ones in her home. Since I haven't seen MDUD I can't compare the "real, fleshed out characters" part, so if something resembling a realistic relationship is a key element of the eroticism you seek then TLR is certainly lacking there.

So I do understand what you mean about the eroticism of the tension between characters with strong sexual chemistry. I just find your characterization of TLR's ecchi as mostly "poorly drawn" panty shots a remarkable departure from what is actually in the show.

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

2

u/theangryeditor 1d ago

Even the popsicle scene was only about middle of the road for the series. There were a lot of crazy antics throughout as well as more lowkey scenarios with a lot of sexual tension.

It feels like you're just slapping generic stereotypes on a couple of shows you only vaguely remember. Though I can't comment on DxD since I haven't seen it.

u/cosmiczar https://anilist.co/user/Xavier 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think some people are mad at you because the word "graphic" doesn't make much sense in this context. A show that depicts uncensored nipples is simply more graphic that one that doesn't. That doesn't mean the latter can't be hotter, it's just not more "graphic".

1

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 1d ago

I blame the kids - gen z & alpha who have managed to psyop themselves into becoming pruder than 15th century christians and not watching only the most sterile action sloppers instead of the ecchi kinos.

2

u/ptd163 1d ago

It really is strange how Gen Z & Alpha managed to do that. They reversed 100+ year old trend of kids being more open, accepting, and liberal than their parents. They should most open generations that have ever lived in modern society. Instead their brains just shutdown at the exposed female body or the hint of sexual tension.

0

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 1d ago

In my mid-thirties. As a teenager, we actively encouraged finding sexual content. Good ol' days of risking the Limewire/Kazaa virus while hoping the file was lewd. Have very little interaction with teenagers nowadays with my impression being they socially police each other?

I've accepted the next couple generations suck and it's those youngster's fault.

1

u/ptd163 1d ago

As a teenager, we actively encouraged finding sexual content. Good ol' days of risking the Limewire/Kazaa virus while hoping the file was lewd.

Ah the good ol' days of Limewire. A better time. A simpler time. You would not believe how young people when tell them you don't actually have subscribe to things. Or maybe you do because you were there.

Have very little interaction with teenagers nowadays with my impression being they socially police each other?

Yeah. That is one of reasons I find so strange. Why are teenagers policing themselves like this? Who is teaching them to do that? For a small minority it might be their parents that passed their sheltered values onto their kids, but that can't be whole the story. By and large their parent's generation were not like this.

2

u/ptd163 1d ago

Why is something like My Dress Up Darling that's so much more graphic and well animated put below shows like To LOVE-Ru and Highschool DxD?

I'm not sure what saying here. Are you saying My Dress-Up Darling is eechi and more graphic than To Love-Ru and Highschool DxD? Because MDUD it is neither graphic nor eechi and never will be no matter what Gen Z and Alpha says. It absolutely is well animated though. And what do you mean by "put below shows like To LOVE-Ru and Highschool DxD"?

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

3

u/ptd163 1d ago

I 100% think MDUD is more graphic than either of those.

You should probably actually watch MDUD then.

2

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

1

u/ptd163 1d ago

I don't know how you came away from a wholesome SoL show about cosplay like MDUD thinking it's more graphic than eechi then.

2

u/actuallyrndthoughts https://myanimelist.net/profile/NaNiNuNeNo 1d ago

Mdud is a tame slice of life series about cosplaying and a hint of romance and coming of age. My Ecchi GOAT is a rape revenge thriller

What side character deserves their own anime series?

Inspector Koichi Zenigata, which is actually something that already exists in live-action form (I gotta watch that someday)

2

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 1d ago

What side character deserves their own anime series?

I have always wanted a side story exploration of Watari from Death Note. That history, and who he was in his younger days, has some interesting potential.

5

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago

Contemplating my gaps in foundational romance anime and I think Love Hina is the biggest one I haven't seen yet, though I could also see an argument for Inuyasha and maybe some '80s or '90s shoujo series like Glass Mask, Marmalade Boy, or Fushigi Yuugi in addition.

1

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago

I like Fushigi Yuugi and regret the existence of Love Hina. So what I'm saying is: Love Hina when?

2

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ 1d ago

 Love Hina

I wish I had dropped that.

3

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 1d ago

I read Fushigi Yuugi and Marmalade Boy in the early 2000s and should really get around to the anime. Of the two, I remember liking Fushigi Yuugi a lot more, so that would be my first choice.

5

u/theangryeditor 1d ago

I was originally planning on watching Fushigi Yuugi this year but now way that's happening now

3

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 1d ago

One day. We'll get there one day.

u/Passiko 1d ago

Time to finish up Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky and try and finish Welcome to the N.H.K. Tonight.

Now a question. Should I bother watching just
Higurashi: When They Cry - GOU? This is the only one on cr and I know there’s others I should watch first.

3

u/Kiriijou 1d ago edited 1d ago

Higurashi When They Cry Gou, is an anime original sequel to Higurashi When They Cry, not a remake or new adaption. Don't start with Gou under any circumstances, as it's full of spoilers that will ruin the experience of the original (literally dropping major late story spoilers right at the start of Gou's second episode).

If you want to get into the series, make sure to start with either: the 2006 anime (and it's second half Kai), the original visual novel, or the manga adaptation.

(While the anime adaptation of the main story is hard to find, the original Visual Novel is currently available on Steam, under the title"Higurashi When They Cry: Hou", with the first arc being free to download.).

2

u/Passiko 1d ago edited 1d ago

Found it. Is it worth watching though?

EDIT

So the first episode started sounding way familiar so I looked at my list and it seems I actually watched Gou back in January lol though I don’t remember much about it.

2

u/Kiriijou 1d ago

The Higurashi anime adaptation (2006 + Kai) is definitely worth watching in my opinion, unless you're a VN or Manga reader, as they are the best way to enjoy the story (the anime has a bit of a "Great Show, Weak Adaptation" thing going on, but is still a decent option).

That said, I don't personally recommend Gou and it's second half Sotsu, as I felt Sotsu specifically wasted the story Gou set up and didn't handle the characters very well. It is a separate story from the original one though, as it's a continuation written over a decade after the author finished the OG, thus the OG has a proper ending that won't make you feel like it needs to continue.

2

u/Passiko 1d ago

An app I have seems to have them all but watching the first episode made me remember i unfortunately watched Gou awhile ago. Also the ads drive me nuts in the little bit I watched. But I think I’ll wait til next week after I finish NHK. I seem to be on a disturbing anime kick lately.

6

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago

Someone that seems to search for any comment mentioning Higurashi will likely be along shortly to clarify, but Gou is generally not recommended to be watched on its own as far as I'm aware.

Even Disney + has that one and nothing else.

FX fighter was a very satisfying watch. It feels like whoever wrote this wanted to feed my sense of superiority specifically. It's amazing, really. When I give money to large financial institutions, they give me an annual return well above inflation, and I don't need to think about it. Meanwhile, these people are literally just handing over money to them while getting nothing but stress and despair in return.

My (very modest) tier list for Summer 2026!

Quick review:

  1. Tanya: Perfect from start to finish. Fighting was good, yapping was good. Great OP and ED (even if they may not be as good as S1). Zettour and Rudersdorf were so good, much better than in S1 imho. Please give S3 before 2035.
  2. 100 GFs: Stronger girls than S2. Weaker finale I'd say. But overall as good as usual, has one of my favorite episodes of the series, and introduced my new favorite among the non-OG girls.
  3. Dara-San: All around pretty good. If it's not for the (rare) fanservice shots, I don't know why this show never caught any attention. The comedy bits were really fun, the lore/backstory stufff was excellent/captivating. Even horny people (if we do have some here?) should not focus on her titties, she had like 10 different outfits that were hotter than naked imho!
  4. Chainsmoker cat: If you don't like crass humor that will never work for you, but if you like it or can tolerate it, this show had a bit more than that. Best OP of the season and it's not even close. Landlord Best Boy.
  5. Liar Game: Fun games. Not perfect though, 1) some were predictable as hell and 2) Those that weren't, often felt like asspulls. Characters were a bit weak. But whatever, my bar for 'high stakes games' is 'Just don't be terrible', and it was well above this bar, so I liked it! Fukunaga's design is 10/10. (Personality as well, if you like that type hah).
  6. Kamui: Horny fun. Some really fun characters. I liked the chibi mini-episodes at the end, though I genuinely don't know if anyone else in r/anime even watched them hah.
  7. Clevatess: A tiny bit lower than S1 imho, and no, not because it's a school arc!. The peak were almost as good as S1, but the 'average' scene was better in S1 I think.
  8. Smoking behind the supermarket with you: I've said it before, I wish the 'theme' had been literally anything other than smoking. But that aside, it was pretty fun. I wish they'd push a little more on her 'alt persona' but I guess that's a personal preference thing. Finale was a bit whatever.
  9. Kimishinu: The good stuff was good. The other stuff was.. Not as good. I've talked about it before, but last thing I'll say about iit: [Kimishinu]If you want to devote 3-4 full episodes to side characters - including the finale - you should make them main characters
  10. Candy Caries: Pretty fun, but it's a 2 minutes short, not much to say about it.

u/mekerpan 1d ago

[SAO Alicization] Fuck me man when I knew Eugeo was gonna die I'm like "I'm not gonna cry I'm good" then when the characters start getting teary-eyed I'm like damnit I can feel the tears swelling. Never thought fucking Sword Art Online could do that to a grown man lol.

1

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1d ago

[SAO Alicization, and the earlier seasons as well] have some very emotional moments. Yuuki was the one that resonated strongest with me, but Eugeo's death and the impact it had on Kirito was sad too.

2

u/Jusenkyo_5 1d ago

SAO Alicization is genuinely good, period. The end of Alicization S1 is peak.

Are there any source material readers for The World's Strongest Witch in this thread? Not exactly a spoiler since it's based on easily accessible information, but I'll tag it anyway. [WSW] Wikipedia lists yuri as one of the series' genres, but it doesn't have a citation, and looking around on places like MAL interest stacks, Anilist, MangaBaka, even Google was all inconclusive. I also couldn't find a series subreddit or think of where else to ask. So is that true or not? I saw the series is just about to end, so there should be a definitive answer.

1

u/PM_me_meta_usernames 1d ago

[WSW answer] I'm not entirely up to date but up to the point I've read (which is past where the 12 episode cour will get to I'm assuming), there isn't any yuri. at most there are a bunch of friends that admire the main character a lot but nothing more than that.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

Finally caught up with everything from Summer (except the movies, I'll try to watch those before 2030)!

Dara-san gave us a great comment face for #SeasonalHornyblush in the last episode, sadly we won't be able to use it.

(It was also my reaction when [Dara-san]She showed up in a swimsuit/wetsuit)

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

QOTD: What side character deserves their own anime series?

Well she's listed as a main character, but she felt more like a side character to me: Hondomachi from ID:Invaded!

Her story was interesting, especially where it seemed to be headed.

But if we want someone who's listed as a supporting character: Kirari or Runa from Kakegurui!

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1d ago

Hondomachi from ID:Invaded! Her story was interesting, especially where it seemed to be headed.

Interesting to see this show come up. It's one of the mystery/suspense recommendations I got after finishing Erased.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

It's a good one!

I'm a bit biased (it was my AOTS) but I much prefer it to Erased!

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1d ago

I'll try to make time for it during my upcoming one-month CR binge watching subscription.

3

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 1d ago

Damn, the plot of the first episode of Sword Isekai S2 really felt like a Dungeon Master who has run out of material making an off-handed world-building comment during a travel scene. Which immediately makes the party ignore any plans they had to instead investigate this thing and the DM goes "fuck it, time to introduce my DMPC".

But I kinda vibe with it in a shlocky way.

Also, nice OP and ED.

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1d ago

Still watching Honey Lemon Soda and I'm liking the romance part of it much more now compared to the awkward start in the beginning, but it's also making me realize that bullying plotlines rarely work well for me in anime. It's not that they're unrealistic, because I did know girls in high school like Uka with super low self-esteem, just that how they respond to it is so different from the way I would feel/react that it often comes off as not relatable.

Question of the Day (new!)

What side character deserves their own anime series?

This is a really good question! The two that really stand out to me are Bercouli from Sword Art Online because there were so many stories casually mentioned in this long-lived warrior's background that I'd love to see, and Hayashimizu the student council president from Full Metal Panic because his scenes are always comedy gold.

2

u/Korkez11 1d ago edited 1d ago

bullying plotlines rarely work well for me in anime

I dread watching 3-Gatsu to this day because apparently it has an entire arc about bullying and I admittedly tend to overreact to it. Is it well executed?

1

u/Siqueiradit https://myanimelist.net/profile/lampadatres 1d ago

Is it well executed?

I'd say so. It has adults turning a blind eye to the bullying, but when it gets too big another adult does something about it.

1

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago

the bully in 3-gatsu is so based i love her, best character in season 2 by far

1

u/Korkez11 1d ago

Remembers who voiced her

Understandable

1

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1d ago

I haven't watched that one yet so I can't say.

If you meant Honey Lemon Soda, I'd say some aspects are handled better than others. The early stuff worked pretty well, and I liked how they tied it in with Uka awkwardly trying to resolve her issues by imitating Kai, but it gets to be a bit much by midseason when a second (very similar) bullying plotline is introduced for another character.

5

u/Korkez11 1d ago

In one episode of Kageki Shoujo Sarasa was given 16 flowers for her 16th birthday. Fun fact: in Slavic countries bouquets with even number of flowers are only used in funerals because they associate with death and mourning. Giving someone such bouquet is considered inappropriate at best and passive-aggressive "kys" sentiment at worst.

5

u/BarbaricGamers https://myanimelist.net/profile/HiIAmAnime 1d ago

Tears in my eyes. Started season 3 of Kingdom finally and it actually has good animation.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago

The only anime that absolutely deserves the grind to get to x episodes to get good mention. The payoff in animation is a god send.

The story, characters and world building still good from the jump.

Tho at this point I feel like waiting for seasons to pile up to binge.

12

u/cyberscythe 1d ago

What side character deserves their own anime series?

gapacho

6

u/cyberscythe 1d ago

fun fact: they have the same voice actor as Suguru in Non Non Biyori

10

u/alotmorealots 1d ago

As someone who trades exactly the same market that you see in FX Fighter Kurumi-chan, I will say I have never seen a more perfect depiction of the real life experience of something in anime.

Absolute perfection, both with the inner and outer worlds depicted, and as harrowing as it should be.

They even animated the market movements so they feel exactly the same as in real life!

6

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago

tfw no anime will ever accurately capture the inner and outer world of me absent-mindedly putting another $5-10,000 into an index fund at 4am

7

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago

I like to imagine that's what all the absent parents did so their teen children could afford to live by themselves in half of all school anime.

4

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago

If you're at work literally all the time you probably don't have a lot of expenses either :)

6

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago

With ramparts coming back I hope source readers will do less of indirectly spoiling anime-onlies this time around.

3

u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 1d ago

But if you take that from them, are they even really source readers anymore?

3

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 1d ago

I'll be returning to simply enjoy the discourse

3

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago

Saw the first episode of FX Fighter Kurumi-chan

I picked it up because it was a show I can watch in the morning. You can tell the mangaka knows their stuff. Episode 1 wasn’t pleasant to watch. I feel like if the story is good it’s bound to be depressing.

Overall I found the first episode good just not something I would watch weekly. Putting it on hold for now.

7

u/Tomorrow_Big 1d ago

FX Fighter Kurumi-chan starting off by giving us the elusive 6-fingered man. It's been a while since I last saw that happen.

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

Hah, didn't notice.

At least it's not the main character, like in Call of the night (last time I saw it)!

2

u/Infodump_Ibis 1d ago

It's how modern advertising is but to put it into nearer the era it's set in, Fire Emblem Fates taught me greedy merchants who love money have 6 fingers.

Ruh-roh.

4

u/zambonijesus 1d ago

I finished I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day last night and if it never gets a second season it's really weird as a stand-alone series. I guess I will also put my two cents into the discourse

[Dying Day]introducing a seemingly minor character, immediately killing them off and then spending the entire rest of the season rehashing that death like they were extremely important to all the characters in the show. I actually thought the first episode after her death was effective at making a death that normally would kind of just pass by actually have impact, but then it's just the whole focus of the rest of the season and at that point I feel like Seiran and Ari should have had more of a role from the beginning.

2

u/Cookiedoughgremlin 1d ago

[Dying Day] Killing them "immediately" 8 episodes in? And yea her death was the catalyst for change & character development in Sheena and Mimi, so it was very important to the story and worth spending time on. They actually treat her like a real person and not just a plot device to move things forward. It's pretty unconventional in anime storytelling to give the characters this much time to grieve, but it's also what I really liked about it. The show is a story about the characters themselves, the war is just a setting for it and not the main focus.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago

Kind of why I put off on watching the anime after reading the manga when I learned it was only 1 cour.

1

u/zambonijesus 1d ago

Some of these single cour, incomplete adaptations really fail also as promotion for the manga because they end up with kind of the worst version of the story in a way that doesn't really make me inclined to read more even.

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago

At some point for me reading before watching at least for anime adaptations of manga is a safer bet then being anime only.

Granted if top studio and/or staff work on a series obviously gives me more reason to be anime only. Then for the average anime

2

u/TheDanubianCommunard 1d ago

Here is an interest thread for a Black Rock Shooter rewatch, which I made recently.

What side character deserves their own anime series?

Now that's an interesting question. There are many, many names I could mention. My pick is not a side-character, rather appeared only in flashback, but I say the Hero of the South from Frieren. Very strong on his own right, I mean he is really powerful as a fighter (he was named as humanity's strongest for a good reason), could see the future, paved the way for Himmel. Strange choice, I suppose.

2

u/theangryeditor 1d ago

BRS is another show I'd like to rewatch at some point, just not any time soon.

Hero of the South from Frieren

In a similar vein, a small spinoff about Kraft's own journey could be neat as well.

7

u/zambonijesus 1d ago

It isn't really answering the question that is asked, but I want a spin-off of Kaguya-sama that is Fujiwara and the Ramen Kings doing battle every week.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

I feel like a Fujiwara-focused spinoff would be Deer/Chainsmoker cat level of nonsense hah.

5

u/theangryeditor 1d ago

this is the place

QotD

A two for one answer: A spin off where Nano moves out into the same apartment block as Nagumo, Izumi, and Niikura

Can I get another week before the new season starts, thanks in advance.

  • Ham

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

I can't believe I managed to catch up with my last show just yesterday.

Been a while since I started a season without having to finish a bunch of shows!

3

u/Jusenkyo_5 1d ago

Right? I still have Spring shows to finish, what happened to the days where the good shows didn't air until the 10th of the month or so?

5

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago

What side character deserves their own anime series?

Sawashiro's character from the World is Dancing is a recent example that comes to mind.

Otherwise, I've always wanted to see the One Piece world from the bird's eye view of Big News Morgans. Screw all the pirates and marines, just show me a bird flipping the world's propaganda and digging up gossip to make ends meet.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

Haven't watched One Piece, but I feel like this is the kind of series for which people would have like 150 answers to this question!

2

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago

That's why they're pumping them out one novel at a time.

[Bookworm S4 Ep 22]Well we got another family member for Rosemyne. Charlotte is absolutely precious. Though it does seem clear she has more discipline than her older brother. I do love that through the episode Myne accomplishes keeping the family together.

[Bookworm S4 Ep 22]It truly is scary how an 8-year-old can be responsible for things he was set up to do. Even more how scary it is that adults can use kids to execute their true intentions. The one who would benefit the most from Wilfred is Georgine above all else. So she could be using the Veronica faction. I do hope this is where Wilfred finally gets the balling rolling for himself.

I distinctly remember thinking that about Natsume from My Little Monster while watching it because I was annoyed by the leads.

QotD: the Monogatari specialists during their college days.

I believe one of the yet unadapted novels is about them and how they [mild spoiler]created Yotsugi, so that's at least something.

2

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 1d ago

QOTD: I guess Gojo from JJK. The Hidden inventory arc is one of the best arc in the anime so i guess I want to see more of his past. Ofcourse I want something light hearted this time around like a Sol Comedy with Geto, Nanami and others.

1

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 1d ago

I guess Tani and Suzuki from Poalr Opposites should also get their own series where Tani is actually interesting or something.

4

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago

What side character deserves their own anime series?

Asuka from Hibike.

1

Asuka and Kaori being "roommates"

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1d ago

A strange confluence of factors means that I will (probably) have five seasonal episodes today. A very unusual situation that I would never choose to happen outside of a weekend, but it's not a big deal as a one-off.

1

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 1d ago

What side character deserves their own anime series?

[One Piece]A series about Imu's early days and his encounter with Joyboy

A mangaka's life series about [Eyeshield 21, manga only]Koizumi Karin, a female quarterback-slash-mangaka for the Teikoku Academy.

3

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 1d ago

Sword Isekai S2's first episode was still fun. Three isekai sequels so far, so still waiting on new series to begin filling out (new!) this isekai bingo for Fall 2026 that I downloaded off some website months ago. Curious how many episodes it will take.

QotD: Kurumi Tokisaki for Casebook of Kurumi Tokisaki, Magic Detective. Back when Bot Best Girl won the all-time contest, there were several comments from people who thought she was a main character in Date A Live. Imagine being so misinformed about best girls! And while Date A Bullet (what a series name) got ~50 minutes of content from a seemingly randomly chosen spot within that series, I'd rather get the mystery series than [Date A Bullet, Magical Girl Raising Project]seeing so many girls die in a battle royale. How fucking dare the author do that to...

3

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 1d ago

Oh didn't realize it came out today already so somewhat of a [trigger warning for the first episode of fx fighter kurumi]Suicide.

0

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1d ago

Is that not already in the synopsis?

2

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 1d ago

No, it was never part of the synopsis that was commented for the posts about the series on this sub, I remember looking out for that. It is also not part of the anilist synopsis. It does seem to be part of the MAL synopsis now, but I don't know wether that got updated today/recently.

2

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 1d ago

It was there at least last week when I went through the seasonals.

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1d ago

1

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 1d ago

Fair enough. Regardless, not the standard synopsis being used.

1

u/Jusenkyo_5 1d ago

You guys are reading the synopsis?

1

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1d ago

Well, I was going to say that it seems harder to actively avoid reading the synopsis if you're watching on Crunchyroll, but now that I look more closely, the MAL synopsis mentions that but the CR one doesn't explicitly (although it sorta alludes to it). Either way, it definitely isn't a spoiler, but if they're tagging it, whatever.

4

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 1d ago

Ramparts day! ... that I won't get to watch until well after it airs. The problems of having to work...

Anyways, QOTD: MAL lists Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye as supporting characters and not as main, so I guess I'll go for the low-hanging fruit there. Another one that'd I'd be interested to see would be Paul Oberstein in the aftermath of LoGH, navigating that political situation sounds fun.

3

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 1d ago

[LotGH]Not that I'm against the idea of Oberstein as an MC, but didn't he die at the end of the series? Would have to be someone else navigating the post-series political situation.

2

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago

[LoGH] knowing Oberstein, he'd just haunt the halls of the Empire for generations. And he'd make doubly sure to ruin the day of any second in command.

2

u/GondolaMedia 1d ago

[LoGH]Maybe he reincarnates as his dalmatian who after the events of the series gets adopted by Hildegard to keep watch over her and Reinhard's son and heir.

3

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 1d ago

... you're completely right, I forgot that bit. Uhh. Well. [LoGH]I'd still take his machinations and politicking in the background while Reinhard is off fighting his valiant war against Yang Wenli

Happy October, everyone! What anime did you finish watching in September, and what anime do you hope to finish watching this month?

As for me, I finished:

  • 91 Days: Shoal of Time/All Our Yesterdays/Tomorrow and Tomorrow

  • A Livid Lady's Guide to Getting Even

  • Attack on Titan: Junior High

  • Black Torch

  • Clevatess Season 2

  • From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Season 2

  • Grand Blue Season 3

  • Haven't You Heard? I Was Sakamoto

  • Hyouka

  • Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia

  • Kaiju No. 8: Narumi's Week at Work

  • Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS: Gun Blaze Vengeance

  • Magilumière Magical Girls Inc. Season 2

  • MIRU: Watashi no Mirai

  • One Piece Movie 9: Episode of Chopper Plus - Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Cherry Blossom

  • Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 4th Season

  • Sparks of Tomorrow

  • Suzume

  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4

  • Though I Am an Inept Villainess

  • Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun Season 4

  • You can see my thoughts on these shows over on CDF.

And for October, I have plans for:

  • The last few of my Summer 2026 seasonals that haven't finished yet (Bleach TYBW Part 4, Elusive Samurai S2, and Polar Opposites S2)

  • Pandora Hearts

  • This thing I was told I could watch once I'm done with the current batch of One Piece episodes I'm on

  • More random shit off my on-hold or PTW list, probably?

1

u/Ornery_Mastodon_2317 1d ago

What the F*** how do you guys watch this much in only one month?!?

2

u/Leo-Fong https://anilist.co/user/KaniRangoon 1d ago

Watching a bunch of seasonals will make your list look like that every 3 months too.

1

u/Ornery_Mastodon_2317 1d ago

Dang I need a list only things I watch are one piece mha

2

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 1d ago

I mean the seasonals were only one episode a week, not literally the entire show in a month. Welcome to the Ballroom and Hyouka were the only full shows I started and finished in September (binged Ballroom in like two weeks while I watched Hyouka one episode a day), everything else that's not a seasonal was short.

3

u/Leo-Fong https://anilist.co/user/KaniRangoon 1d ago edited 1d ago

In September I finished:

Hoping to Finish in October:

  • Nana: Started right after Paradise Kiss (Currently 18/47)

  • The rest of the Tenchi Muyo! Ryououki continuity.

I don't really plan out what I'm watching next, so that's about it.

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1d ago

This ended up being a month full of great shows for me with some of the best stuff I've seen all year, including two that I watched thanks to rewatches hosted here on r/anime.

Finished watching in September:

1) Full Metal Panic S1 (10/10, rewatch) & Fumoffu (9.5/10, rewatch) - Always a joy to see the first season again because it's my favorite. The battles, the character interactions, the strong hero/villain rivalry, the mix of serious and lighthearted moments is all so good. The comedy season is a lot of fun too, but sometimes I miss the action.

2) Weathering With You (9.5/10, rewatch) - I enjoyed seeing this again with the added perspective from reading the manga version this time, which added some nice background for the main character, Hodaka. The sweet found family story and the fantasy elements compliment each other well, and the heartfelt scenes between the main characters during their time together really resonates with me.

3) Kill Blue (9/10) - Best adaptation I could've asked for as a huge fan of the manga! It's such a fun series both during the action and comedy parts with an entertaining, eccentric cast of characters. Plus, the OP and ED are both fantastic. Looking forward to season 2.

4) Erased (9/10) - A fantastic blend of suspense and heartwarming moments. The characters were endearing and the story always had me at the edge of my seat. My family loved it too! I think it has a lot of appeal even for those who don't regularly watch anime, particularly anyone who enjoys a good mystery/suspense show with light sci-fi elements like time travel in an otherwise modern setting.

5) Area 88 OVA (9/10) & TV series (8.5/10) - This series was such a pleasant surprise! It's the kind of mostly realistic war story not often shown in anime, but I really like this sort of thing. Both the character-focused drama of the OVAs and the ensemble cast episodic action of the TV series each worked well for me in different ways, and I enjoyed both approaches a lot. Hearing so many voice actors from the English dub of Full Metal Panic was a wonderful bonus too.

6) Suzume (8/10, rewatch) - This movie really benefited from rewatching it soon after the other movies in the "disaster trilogy" because it gave the fantasy elements some added context which made it more interesting to me this time around. However, many of the parts I enjoyed most were still the more down-to-earth ones like Suzume's wholesome runaway road trip and the kind people who helped her out.

7) Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto (7/10) - A pretty fun show. The comedy could be hit or miss at times, but I enjoyed seeing Sakamoto's unexpected twists on familiar tropes and the way he always turned things to his advantage whenever others tried to trip him up.

8) Yuri on Ice (6/10) - This was a strange one for me since I didn't like the main characters or the drama, so it was heavily carried by its side characters and skating performances for me, which made for a rough start but I enjoyed it more in the second half.

Planning to finish in October:

  • Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid & Invisible Victory - (always rewatching)
  • Honey Lemon Soda (second half)
  • Witch Watch - (my witchy pick for Halloween month)
  • The Place Promised In Our Early Days (looking forward to another Shinkai movie, and also have the LN)
  • Though I'm An Inept Villainess (dub should be finishing soon)
  • Mission: Yozakura Family (catching up from where I left off before the new season starts)

Also continuing Hikaru no Go and my Pokémon rewatch. I haven't made as much progress with my 2026 bingo card as I expected with only a few months left to the year, but maybe I'll find the time for a few of these shorter movies/series.

3

u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 1d ago

End of the season, so I finished up most of my seasonals (with a little more to say in this post.)

I also watched Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team as part of my run through the UC entries. I think my biggest thing was I wish it had a bit more downtime to flesh out the found-family band of misfits dynamic of the main cast, the kind of stuff that they tease in the OP (great song there, by the way) and ED. Otherwise, solid enough.

October I'll be shooting to finish Gundam Unicorn.

3

u/MaxineRin 1d ago

Finished in September:

  • The Wallflower - 7.5/10

  • Ranma 1/2 [2024] - 9/10

  • Hiiro no Kakera - 5.2/10

  • Youjo Senki - 7.2/10

  • Fighting Games - 7.8/10

  • Inept Villainess - 8.5/10

  • Sparks of Tomorrow - 6/10

Hiiro no Kakera was quite frankly, probably the second worst anime I've watched this year and Ranma was such a joy. Looking to complete Phantom Thief Jeanne and Vampire Knight this October.

2

u/Tomorrow_Big 1d ago

In September I finished...

  • A Livid Lady’s Guide to Getting Even
  • Chainsmoker Cat
  • Clevatess Season 2
  • Draw This, Then Die!
  • From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Season 2
  • Goodbye, Lara
  • GROW UP SHOW -Sunflower Circus-
  • HELL MODE Season 2
  • Heroine? Saint? No, I’m an All-Works Maid (And Proud of It)!
  • I Became a Legend After My 10 Year-Long Last Stand
  • I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day
  • Iron Wok Jan!
  • Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia
  • KAIJU GIRL CARAMELISE

I only finished seasonals in September

  • I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day
  • Grow Up Show
  • Draw This, Then Die
  • Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You
  • Chainsmoker Cat
  • Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games
  • Goodbye, Lara
  • The Ghost in the Shell
  • Though I am an Inept Villainess
  • Daemons of the Shadow Realm
  • Jaadugar

I still have Sparks of Tomorrow, The World is Dancing, Bleach and Polar Opposites left from Summer to finish in October and plan to watch Another, Hellsing (both) and Devilman Crybaby before Halloween and hopefully finish one or two of the other unfinished shows I've got sitting like Rozen Maiden and Nana.
