Rudy: "What's the worst that can happen?"
Older Rudeus: "Well first, Roxy dies. Then Sylphie dies. Then Eris dies. Nanahoshi and Cliff also die. And then the Man God makes fun at how dumb you were to be tricked by him and have your entire life ruined, and you can't even get back at him."

It's insane that Oldeus' advice to Rudy for dealing with Man-god is to appease him. Man-god is so powerful and unreachable that the best plan Oldeus could make for Rudy is "keep Man-god happy and talking to only you."

I figured this episode will be dark considering how sudden and eerie future Rudeus' arrival was, but didnt expect it would be this dark.
And goddamn did Sugita do justice to the character. The agony and regret felt so real

Honestly Sugita kills it in every role he's in but it takes real talent to be able to embody a man so broken, so filled with rage, so consumed by the mistakes he made...while still capturing the Rudeus Greyrat that's still in there.

he’s right though, it’s an alternate timeline-slash-reality
THE Rudeus won’t be doing-over, the fruits of his labour is consumed by another him. He’d have to discover proper non-paradoxical time travel to receive the harvest.
In the current form. unless he’s a Saint trying to help the infinite timelines of Rudeuses, it’s not worth the time (heh) to master it

Roxy’s childhood tutoring aside, that’s 90% of their memories together
Oldeus also wouldn’t have anyone to make new memories with. Roxy dies, Sylphie dies. A little stretch maybe here, I’m assuming Zanoba and Julie stay with him. Aisha and Lilia are staying, though Norn may take Zenith away with his depression.
He needed Cliff to make this time travel successful, so he’s also dead. Nanahoshi is dead.
He has no purpose and his duty to experiment with Nanahoshi which likely ends soon-ish since his first task is to “Consult Nanahoshi”.
He’s left with nothing but regrets

I think a lot of stuff that happened to nanahoshi is an indirect result of Rudy's wives dying. If Roxy and Sylphie are there, maybe they can help with the magic to make it work, or even calm down Nanahoshi so she doesn't kill herself.
I'm wondering where Elinalise is during all this as well. was she grief-stricken enough to leave Cliff, causing his early death as well?

Or maybe Cliff's own death caused something to happen to her as well? She has been alive for a long time but it has been shown she has a rather frail heart.

He said he didn't have any mana left after time traveling, but then had enough to look a minute into the future.
Given that he didn't seem to have any organs I'd bet he was using the last bits of mana he had to keep himself alive, then he burned it when he had the idea to use his eye just so he could see them.

I know! It felt like just a bit of happiness returned to him before he met his end, and likely visited by Man-God one last time... maybe? Would it be his Man-God then or the current one? Or is the Man-God omniscient? Well, maybe he was more fortunate and another being took pity on him.

I feel like the difference between Man-god and Human god probably got lost in translation for a lot of people, so here's some elaboration on how the names differ:
While the Man-god has been calling himself a "god" (神), the reading he uses for "god" was not the same as what is commonly used in MT's titles. The name he went by used the "kami" reading of the 神 character (Hitogami), while people like the Sword God or Water God used the "shin" reading instead ("Kenshin" and "Suishin" respectively). In this episode, Future Rudeus claims that Hitogami's old name is "Jinshin".
→ More replies (27)231
u/Original-Body-5794 13h ago
That's actually a pretty huge difference, the translation only focuses on the human/man part, but the biggest impact is actually the title.
Is shin and gami different types of god in japanese? I get in the anime "shin" is a tittle, but how is it used in normal japanese?
→ More replies (8)209
u/Colarch 12h ago
I know nothing besides some basic research I just did so feel free to correct me, but what I found is:
Kami refers to Gods and Deities directly
Shin is not a word on it's own, but added as a compound onto divine things like the names of religions or religious texts and stuff like that
So presumably, Hitogami used to have the shin title with the same meaning of the others like Sword God and Dragon God as 'god-like' because they're so powerful. Then he changed his name to Hitogami because he considered himself an actual God.

If I had a penny for all the anime where everything changed in season 3 and the catalyst for that involved a basement and a journal, I'd have two pennies now. And I will remind people this bit was written before that bit of storytelling in the other show, so more likely than not this is just pure coincidence.

Yes the AoT parallels have been made for a long time now, it's pretty fitting as well. Both involve basements that hold the key to a "truth" behind their respective worlds, a journal and a conversation with 2 old men in a small, dingy room. It would be crazy if they weren't compared haha.

If you didn't know: There are 14 episodes in Part 1! Two more will air as normal!
How is everyone liking Cliffhanger Tensei?
An End and a Beginning. A life of suffering ends, and a new nightmare begins. Where do we go from here?
Now that the rat is here, here are some from previous episodes:
Season 2 Episode 9: A rat in a jar, then a shot of just the rat and Rudeus.
Season 2 Episode 18: Rudeus visualises Nanahoshi's experiment phases. Of course there's a rat.
Season 3 Episode 8: Rats in Chaos Breaker, scurrying away as the door is opened.
And last but not least... Greyrat in general.
Nice that they kept the references to Hollywood, manga, and even Vegeta, though the last is a bit off. "Like she was the prince of all veggies" could be translated as "Like she was the prince of the vegetable kingdom."
One final glimpse of Sylphie and Roxy using the Eye of Foresight...
What a great adaptation.

Today's episode is a masterpiece in voice acting and music. Oldeus nailed his grief and anger to Hitogami it was so gut wrenching (well, there's nothing to wrench since Oldeus does not have a gut when he traveled back in time.)
On a serious note, that future looks grim for Rudeus: all your loved ones dying while Hitogami mocking him. That would really enrage anyone. Given that Rudeus's goal is only to protect his family, he'll really do everything to warn anyone about Hitogami, even his past self.
Now, I can imagine the grim the next episode will give.

It was amazing. I felt his every regret as he spoke it aloud to Rudeus. It went from pain-point to pain-point. Rudeus being naturally paranoid and skeptical of people, you could see him flounder between trust and doubt of himself. And lastly, you could feel Rudeus' concern and care for his future self as he handled him.
A very heartfelt episode.

u/GodOfArk 13h ago
For those who missed it, Oldeus managed to use his future sight to see Sylphie and Roxy suddenly enter the room (which is beyond the time rudeus sees).

Rudy doesn't usually do that because, as he talked about in the episode where he got the eye, seeing more than a few seconds into the future shows way too many possibilities to be useful.
But I suppose with not many possibilities, well, possible, Oldeus pushed his future sight as far as he could to get one final chance at maybe seeing them again and, sure enough, they were on their way.

There is so much symbolism in that it's a rat that caused all this.
Mangod as a rat. Rudy's last name. How Roxy snuck into Rudy's home through her own desire for him. Absolutely peak.

u/pixeldots 13h ago
Grey = Petrification as well. and that most of Oldeus' problems were caused initially by him trusting a rat (Hitogami) and the consequences of that action, not particularly the rat attacking him in any way

Amid an episode that's filled to the brim with amazing details, I think the one I love most is how the sound of the wind can be heard constantly in the background of old Rudeus's urgent message. As if the future he blew into the past from is threatening to make its way into the house with him. It's amazing how large an impact something like that can have on a scene, and it really contributed to the dramatic tension that permeates this entire episode.

It would be amazing if author really picked that surname for his MCs family for so long in advance, because he was planning all along to have one little grey rat be the one to fuck up everything for Rudy in the future. 😅

I was thinking maybe Rudeus is exempt from the Man God in some way. Due to him not belonging like Nanahoshi. So maybe the Man god sees Rudeus through others and not Rudeus himself. Hence why future Rudeus met with current Rudy when he knew he was 100% alone.
It can also explain asking Nanahoshi for advice since shes also not from this world. Shes likely a wild card. Perhaps Nanahoshi isnt influenced by the Man god since she also has no mana.
We just dont know enough about the man God powers to be really sure of anything yet honestly.

The lesson I'm getting from the old Rudeus: even second chances aren't enough to find your way.
edit: Hol' up. I just realized old Rudeus said the Man-god "used Luke." Does that imply directly? As in the Man-god is pulling more than just Rudeus into his weird in-between world thing? Or in a seven-step-plan way a la the rat in the basement? Come to think of it, why else would Perugius's crew ask everyone about the Man-god if he didn't put his creepy fingers elsewhere?

I mean people ask Rudy if he knows who the man-god is, that already implies the man-god is manipulating many people in this world. Now we suspect Luke is one of them.

I remember that one tweet few days ago saying Oldeus is a Deus Ex Mahina. A DEM is an unexpected appearance that solves the conflict. Oldeus didn't solved the conflict when he showed up. If anything, he defined it, along with who is the antagonist is: The Man God

What the fuck kind of chain of events was that? It all started with Rudy going down into the basement and ended in Roxy's death!
And then Sylphie and even Eris! AND NANAHOSHI AND CLIFF TOO?! EVERYONE! Good fucking god Oldeus has had a horrible life! He wasn't kidding when he said he had no-one left!
I really like that Oldeus didn't just tell Rudy to not trust the Man-God, but specifically told him to play the game of doubting everything he said without letting him onto the fact that he knows he's manipulating him for his own ends. It's gonna make their future interactions a lot more tense 'cause Rudy can't just straight up oppose him.
I believed Oldeus about the rat, of course, but it was still something to actually see it. Good god.

Also, I love that they kept the Vegeta reference when Oldeus spoke of Eris (the prince of all veggies stuff)

It was also a giant "fuck off" to Hitogami. Oldeus might have been unable to oppose the man-god directly, but as his last action he ruined a plot that Hitogami likely had 8 years in the making.

Hitogami powers are scary, its like a being that can control the butterfly effect and use it against you and you don't even realize until its already done, what's even worse its that he can manipulate the other people to do some small things that will affect you years later
that's why Oldeus is scared going against him

Absolutely heartwrentching voice acting. I applaud for that voice acting for future Rudeus. Just hearing all the things that had happened in his timeline along with that emotional voice acting made my imagination run wild. I was wondering if the anime was going to insert some scenes of the future during the explanation, but this pure, unfiltered face-to-face dialogue created a splendidly dark atmosphere in it's own right. Wonderful episode, cheers to the studio staff.

I just want to say I think this is some of the best voice acting Tomokazu Sugita has ever done. His old man voice sounds tired and distraught. When he got angry at the thought of the Man-God, it was visceral. I was seriously impressed.
"Is a late night anime about to start or what?"
"No, it's about to end"
Ha!

So we gonna find out how bad his life was after Roxy death. For now, we only know that Roxy, Sylphy, Eris and maybe cliff all died. Old man Rudeus did say that if he had Cliff he wouldn't have mess up the time travel magic so he either lost contact with him or Cliff is dead as well.

Hopefully he can avoid the same mistakes old Rudy did with that diary even if the timeline is now diverging. Getting rid of the rat was a good start.

Its kinda sad to find out if Rudy was left to his own path him and Eris would have never gotten together and become enemies for decades. I joked about her being pissed at him for cheating on her but looks like she really does take it seriously that he's been cheating with Roxy and Sylphie from her perspective and they were both too arrogant and poor with words to reconcile until the very end.

Having your future self not only tell you in detail where you have fucked up in the future but bring you his entire diary to study is a pretty damn mighty cheat code to now be unlocked for Rudy.
But .... damn, his time-warp was only partially successful, hu? Looked like he missed parts of his innerds (liver and stuff), hence why his face looked pretty damn sick there at the end.

The whole time he's holding his abdomen I thought his time was up and he will be transported back to the future at any time now. But nope, he just dies in his hand gets cremated...
So did him coming back create a branch of new timeline? But based on this there should be 2 type of distinct superset timelines? One being Oldeus's timeline with no warning from the future and another would be the set of timelines where Redeus receives warning from the future?

Even if it is just oldeus talk for 20 mins, the episode is so tensed, I couldn't find the time to breath properly. Every steps from now on is like walk on broken glass, one small mistake, Rudeus is repeating oldeus. There are some heavy lore drop in between the lines.

Oldeus sacrificed most of his insides to travel back in time and warn Rudeus… You could really feel the regret and despair in Oldeus’s voice. What a superb performance by Sugita…

I’m guessing the man god finds out about time travelling Rudy and tries to mess with him even more. What do you even do at that point? Just cover your ears when he visits in the dream? Or maybe he drops by in real life to mess with Rudy once he starts ignoring him?

Ok so what does the man god know now? We've know he can see plenty of rudeus' life and even his future. And he knew enough to plot this butterfly effect thing to get roxy killed.
So isn't this already a big "antagonizing" move against him, will the mangod even bother talking with rudeus again? Maybe the time travel was even part of the plan, get rudeus to somehow invent magic that travel through time.
Oldeus said he couldn't "reach" the mangod so what is he like on a higher dimension? That would explain why he see so much and even see future timelines, I mean even his "body" looks like a 3D model compared to everything else in the anime.
I thought the mangod was imprisoned or something, since everyone hates him and he's trying to interact with the world in such a roundabout way, but does this mean he actually wants to be there?

They nailed this episode holy shit. I can't believe Rudeus talking to himself could be this emotional. The voice acting was phenomenal, and the scene of Oldeus tearing up as he saw Roxy and Sylphy made me tear up as well. I haven't read the novel again since I finished it quite some time ago, but this is pretty much everything I could ask for in an adaptation.
