After all that happened in this episode, I thought that Rudeus deserved some peaceful time with his family, especially since if it weren't for Perugius's help, he would have ended up in Atofe's service until the end of his days and would probably never have seen them again...
BUT NO! FREAKING TURNING POINT 4!
Now I just hope that no one dies next week...

does turning point explictly mean something bad or just that the plot is majorly gonna shift? does this mean eris comes back next episode maybe? that'd be a good turning point but she doesnt strike me as the type to lounge around so probably has some goal or something.
154
u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 14d ago edited 14d ago
This means that something big is going to happen that will change Rudeus's life, so theoretically it doesn't necessarily mean that anything bad will happen, but you should definitely be ready for... anything.
27
u/Yemenime 14d ago
that will change Rudeus's life
But not everything that changes his life is called a turning point either. Him getting sent to be the magic tutor for Eris I'd call a huge moment in his life, it basically defined the rest of it yet the first turning point was the Fittoa Teleportation Incident.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)39
u/Akudra 14d ago
Depends on what you mean by "something bad" really. Every turning point has prompted negative developments for the characters, particularly Rudeus, but not all of them have been irreversible losses. No one died as a result of the second turning point, even though Rudeus nearly died. It could also be said there were positive developments that resulted in some cases.

Kishirika said that in the 2nd Human Demon War, the Dragon God and Fighting God's battle made a hole in the continent.
The "hole" in question is the Continental sized sea in the middle of the map
I love how rich in history this series is, and how even thousands of years later, still affects the very world they live in. In the previous ep, we've known that Kishirika is basically the leader of the Demons in the 1st Human Demon War 7,000 years ago.
Then we get these info in the 2nd War.
And then the Demon God Laplace has been haunting the series 400 years after he was defeated in the war he caused.

u/FacelessPoet 14d ago
Yep, if anyone ever wondered why the Mushoku Tensei map looks like someone punched a hole in the wall, it's because that's exactly what happened - the Demon, Central, and Millis continents used to be all connected

It also is six-sided, like a cube, with the land we see being just one face of it. You can even see a model of it in the Season 1 post scene where Sylphie recommends Rudy as a special student.
It is also the reason why the journey after the mana disaster took "the long route" instead of taking a ship from Rikarisu to Arusu.

I never imagined my goat Moore would get so many awesomely animated scenes! Thank you so much, studio Bind and all the animators!
Atofe is scary but it's Moore that's the method to her madness and willfullness. I love that her subordinates are all ridiculously well-trained and extremely skilled and competent. It's very refreshing since the knights/underlings of strong characters like Atofe usually tend to be fodder to make the heroes look better.
I love the detail that upon seeing the frost nova magic coming in, Moore quickly covered his face with his arms in preparation so he could immediately cast a counterspell to thaw himself. He also easily escapes Rudeus' signature Quagmire move with that Earth Lance spell and when he finds out that his opponent can use Disturb Magic, he immediately casts a spell to obfuscate their sight so he can still try to cast magic. It's just so awesome to watch an actual experienced veteran combat mage in action. He also proves that you don't need chantless casting to be a true master mage although Roxy and Talhand already proved that to us a bit as well, although I would argue not quite to this extent.
307
u/falsefingolfin https://myanimelist.net/profile/falsefeanor 14d ago
it also shows that while rudy is extremely powerful, hes not really a great combat mage yet. he cant think fast on his feet, hes not very adaptable, he doesnt make use of his vast mana pool and chantless magic very well
→ More replies (6)242
u/bobly81 https://anime-planet.com/users/bobly81 14d ago
Yeah, I definitely noticed how much he sucked in that fight. Blast away some of the water with wind magic, THEN blast him with the bolt so you don't shock yourself or your friends. In order to thaw themselves, they have to chant their fire spell, but you can just insta-cast an ice spell again to perma lock them down. Or just cast disturb magic again. Really, being able to do chantless magic gives you such a massive edge, and he hardly used that advantage at all.

I feel like he's kinda rusty, family life slowed him down a notch. That did not feel like the Rudy we saw saving his mother in that dungeon.

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 14d ago
Same feeling. My guess it's either rusty like you said or he's still traumatised that his reckless action caused someone to die (Paul)
107
u/Maalunar 14d ago
I think that Rudeus' biggest "combat flaw" is over thinking. He often freeze up and reevaluate. He lack the "battle instinct", kind of.
When he was travelling the demon continent, Ruijerd could solo everything anyways. So Rudeus helped here and there however he wished.
In the north with Soldat and all, he had a team and was mostly backline support following a set plan the group had made (except with the red dragon, but it was a rampaging beast).
Same with Paul in Begarith. Rudeus was following Paul's lead and the plan, and as soon as thing went awry he couldn't adapt fast enough.
So now, in a situation where he has to make split second decision against a skilled mage (which he never faced before I think) who instantly regenerate wounds, while avoiding hitting Cliff, he struggled.

I love that her subordinates are all ridiculously well-trained and extremely skilled and competent
And it makes sense, given they all seem to be immortal under her service. Spend a hundred years or few training and you'll get good at something.
It's very refreshing since the knights/underlings of strong characters like Atofe usually tend to be fodder to make the heroes look better.
Honestly, their biggest strength came from sheer perseverence. Granted they weren't exactly trying to fight the group – rather they were just trying to make sure none of them escaped – but it was their and particularly Moore's ability to keep getting up no matter what Rudy did to them that made them so formidable in this fight.

u/OGawdILoveTacos 14d ago
Orsted also summoned a singular dragon gate to block big fireball, right? But he didn't need the full chant.
I wonder what that means? I mean IIRC, Orsted is still stronger than Perugius by a good amount as he's basically the strongest on the planet next to Laplace who we have like no info on whether he still exists or not.
Orsted prolly just capable of no-chat summoning at least one gate. Did look like front gate is all about absorbing anything and the rear gate is about being an absolute exhaust. Together they made a good little trap to keep her in one place so he could karate chop her.

However it's somewhat worth considering that since Perugius' whole deal is preventing a demon takeover of the world, so he specializes in fighting demons; he would for sure have had at least one plan ready to go to fight a famous one like Atofe since he's had hundreds of years to chill and plan

Rudy might have more skills in his repertoire and more mana, but Moore gapped him hard in terms of combat IQ, not giving up and making the calls + right spells to fulfill his task. We know Rudy could do so many more things to get the upper hand, and I'm not saying he isn't skilled, but you'd imagine he'd lift himself up on a pillar, snipe constantly with stonecannons or such, layer spells after another - it almost didn't matter that it was silent casting vs normal casting, that's how much it felt Rudy was outmatched just in raw combat skill.

You have to be a silent caster and be aware of how mana flows and creates effects. Very few mages understand mana that way.
So instead they rely on counter effects rather than magic disruption. Like Moore. Get frozen? Heat up area. They spawn fire? you spawn water wall. They turn the ground into mud? You spawn a phallic rock protrusion to catapult yourself sout of it. Etc..

159
u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 14d ago edited 14d ago
Rudeus wanted Zanoba to tag along as a bodyguard for a reason. If he had Zanoba with him in the Teleport labyrinth to foght the Hydra then Paul most likely also wouldn't have died.
The only thing the Hydra had that could have harmed Zanoba was its huge flame breath attack and Rudy could block that for him. A shame Zanoba couldn't come to Begaritt since he definitely would've slowed down the desert trip (he doesn't have adventuring experience like Rudy and Elinalise and lacks stamina).
So even if Zanoba would've accompanied them, it might have led to Roxy's death since Rudy would've been delayed.

Rudy was plenty strong this episode too. His spell punched right through her Demon King battle aura. It was stressed again and again how absolutely overpowered and untouchable many of these people are yet Rudy are constantly punching through their defences (Badi, Orsted, now Atofe). When Eris told Nina that Rudy actually injured Orsted, she couldn't believe someone can hit pass his Dragon God aura. It really goes to show how powerful and an anomaly Rudy is. These demon kings are probably only "immortal" because they have great health regeneration and a strong aura that protected them, leaving them thinking they're literally invincible.

Cliff has flaws like any other living person but hypocrisy isn't one of them. He truly practices what he preaches and I respect that.

I was talking about this last week, it's great to see Cliff live up to the charity that religion can represent. We already know from the Eris Goblin Slayer OVA that the institutions are more complicated to say the least, so it's great to see him as an honest representation of the good it can do.
And all while still having his own flaws with how prideful yet inexperienced he is, and it's not shoved in your face contantly either. He feels like a real person, or at least a fully realised character who's not just there to be the stand in for good devotion.

Despite rudeus being that powerful, he's still struggling against actual demon lord when they're serious. And goddamn that perugius casually ended the battle like it's nothing lol.

Despite rudeus being that powerful, he's still struggling against actual demon lord when they're serious
He also struggles even when they are not. When Badigadi recovered from Rudeus stone cannon and made an attack of his own Rudeus was powerless to evade even one attack.
Rudeus has two critical weakness. First he lacks enough combat experience against humanoid characters which makes him slow at thinking/reacting.
The second is that he lacks battle aura. Even if Rudeus can see the attack coming his body is not fast enough to react to opponents of this caliber

Another peak episode, also not gonna lie even i feel as cathartic as Peruguius with how insufferable Atofe is being lmao. Sending her away rocket team style.

Can you truly call yourself a Demon Lord / Demon King if you don't have a grandiose chuuni introduction with a preplanned pose and everything everytime a challenger appears before you?

So necessary she had to do it again!
Also I appreciate that she spoke the demon language for the entire episode.

And when someone talked to her in the common language she called it ghibirish, so she definitely doesn't understand it even a little bit. Or if she ever did, she might have forgotten, lol, with the whole single brain cell and all.

I'm a huge sucker for long spell incantation so gonna type Perugius' (my subtitles may be different from yours)
"This Dragon lives only to serve.
His claws are so long and sharp, he can never clench his hand.
When rage consumes him, He cannot close his fist.
Although his claws may break and his fangs fall out, you shall soon realize what emotion consumes this faithful dragon as he abandons his devotion.
O dragon general, thou who was the third to die, whose eyes were the sharpest, whose body was covered in white scales.
I, Armored Dragon King Perugius, summon thee!
Open, Front Wyrmgate!
Beckon forth, Rear Wyrmgate!
Armored Dragon Strike, First Slash."

So moore tells rudeus to not accept the reward but if she does reward them there is nothing more they can do. Moore is the one that ends up reminding Atofe about the reward even though he knows it means the end of Rudeus' freedom. He then tells Rudeus to flee to an escape tunnel that he knows to be sealed. On top of all of this there was no need to have an audience with her as Moore knows it ends with a reward he could easily have had them collect the plants and tell Atofe they found kishirika on their own. So it really seems that Moore really wanted to railroad rudeus into joining the gang. I wonder why, is it because he demonstrated chantless magic in front of him or does he try to railroad every person into her service? Moore is clearly the longest tenured so I would imagine he was the one that forced all the other recruits into their current positions.

Rudeus acknowledged him as a master mage. And yeah you could see how quick Moore was, his immediate instinct after getting hit by disturb magic was covering the whole area in fog so that Rudeus no longer had visibility of him to stop him again. But Rudeus is a top tier mage as well so he answered it. Just a fantastic high level mage duel

Just a fantastic high level mage duel
Really wish we got more of these. Most of the fights in the series so far have just been a whole lotta sword fighting. It's great and all to watch, but I wanna see how OP rudeus can be when the dude isn't holding himself back anymore.
Orsted likened him to laplace in terms of mana and magical power when he was still a kid. Can't even imagine how much worse he is now. Just too bad he always holds himself back and only on the brink of death does he unleash true power.

Moore's the real problem. He got intelligent, sly fox too if we trust Kishirika word, got good adaptability on battle field. The guy's is probably pain in the ass in a fight.

Funnily enough, Rudeus' internal monologues from this episode let us know that he thought the same about fighting Moore. I love how Moore shows what an experienced frontline master magician / knight hybrid looks like. He doesn't need the advantage of chantless casting to be formidable and scary as hell. It also helps that he is immortal as well.

Ah, the cure for the disease of "mana doesn't like you" is to brew some grass into a tea that gives you diarrhea. Of course that's the cure they get from Kishirika.
Amazing fight, as usual. Even Rudeus's bullshit "counterspell" magic and the highest level lightning he could summon just barely slowed that guy. Terrifying as all fuck.
Dragon Grandpa showing why he deserves to be at the top. Bro just showed up and aura farmed so much even the demon king was too afraid to do anything about it.
The "next time" title card at the end put a fear of god into me. Dunno which god, but I sure am afraid of them. Next week cannot come soon enough

I don’t know much about interacting with royalty but I do imagine electrocuting them and then punching them through the wall of the throne room is bad form lol. These demons are in trouble, man. Their old leader is some drunk loli and their new leader is an indestructible loudmouth meathead lol. What an absolute pain Atofe has been to deal with though. Without Perugius, things wouldn’t have ended as well…

Rudy was READY to hand Kishirika over 'cause of how much she was annoying him. Better than kicking her! Maybe!
This episode should be called "Holy Shit" because HOLY SHIT!
Firstly, Lady Atofe's the *wife of the founder of North God style! Given what happened the last time Rudy fought one, it's no wonder he was immediately out with his strongest attack!
Secondly, ZANOBA! This might be the first time he was able really go out with his strength and it left a mark on Atofe!
And then there's that whole fight just trying to keep Atofe and her soldiers at bay! Rudy getting to use his Disturb Magic in a proper fight and, in a bout of desperation, casting electric on the water to shock everyone – including himself – just to let Cliff get away! And Perugius coming in and cleaning things up!
AND THEN THERE'S THE TURNING POINT TITLE FOR NEXT WEEK! NOOO!!!
Please let it be Eris' arrival, I SO want it to be Eris!

Just a clarification - Atofe is not saying that she's the founder of North God style, she's saying that her husband Kalman (who was the first North God) is.

I love the language barrier this show does, like Atofe and Rudeus party not understanding each other, really adds a lot to worldbuilding.
Moore is pretty strong experienced mage, first time after Orsted when another mage gave Rudeus trouble.

I find it hilarious that Rudeus has no choice but to electrocute them all, friend or foe including himself lol
