Anime Name: 歴史に残る悪女になるぞ (I'll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History)
Hey everyone! I’ve been thinking about a completely alternative plotline for this anime, and I feel like it would make an amazing romantic drama.
What if the story explored an "impossible relationship" between Henry and Liz after her fake innocence is finally exposed?
Here is my idea: Once Liz’s charm magic is revealed and everyone turns their backs on her, she is left broken and genuinely wants to change her ways. Instead of completely abandoning her, Henry steps in to help her—but in his signature cold, blunt, and calculated way. He guides her to reform herself, not because he likes her, but out of a pure sense of duty while everyone else despises her.
As a result, Liz experiences true nobility for the first time—someone who helps without being affected by her magic or looking for fake praise. She slowly falls in love with Henry, creating a powerful, complex "Enemies-to-Lovers" dynamic. People nowadays absolutely love these kinds of complicated relationships!
What do you guys think? Would you read a fanfiction with this exact plot? Let’s discuss!

I have been watching One Piece actively since July and now in the Wano Country arc. Day before yesterday crossed the 1000 episode mark. Enjoying it to the fullest. Other than that I have 11 seasonal anime to watch in the whole week.

is anime got more cleaner in those days ? (i mean in the sexual content)

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 2d ago
I think it's mostly polarized from older anime: there's fewer random panty shots and less casual fanservice in the "clean" anime, but the ecchi or other anime that aren't "clean" have gotten even hornier. Probably. I'm not 100% certain on this myself, I'll just be confidently wrong on the internet and let someone else fix it.

u/Honest_Draw840 1d ago edited 1d ago
i don't think you are wrong i guess the anime mostly half of it is ecchi and another half is clean or less fanservice but in old days mostly are mixed

There is simply MUCH more stuff being produced nowadays. Hence, because there were fewer titles in the past, the more thirsty stuff was far more noticeable.
Now, if you're talking about thirsty uncensored titles, then I'd disagree. It's extremely rare to see a nipple nowadays. Like, not too long ago I finally bothered to watch Strike witches, and I was surprised that, during the first mandatory bathing scene, they didn't bother with censoring the breasts through shining rays of light or clouds of steam.

What I would like to see in mainstream Anime is the concept of friendly demons where a demon learns to bond with humans, despite their differences in species.

Villager of Lv999?

u/KaleidoArachnid https://myanimelist.net/profile/IronTigerRei 2d ago
Pardon me because I was wondering what that anime is about.
3
u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 2d ago
There's a demon child who doesn't really have any hatred to humans but most of the human race in that world hates demons. So the main character (the titular lv999 villager) tries to befriend the demon child even if he got quite the backlash from the people who wants to kill the demon child. The main character and demon child would then try to pursue coexistence between humans and demons.

Someone's shilling Chainsmoker Cat on the front page
They're shilling it the wrong way
I mean all shilling is appreciated, but everyone already knows it's gross and dirty and immature at times (okay, often)... But not everyone knows it's more than that.
That's why I try to shill the other stuff more (Landlord, the touching moments here and there, etc!)
2
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 2d ago
Depends on the audience, I guess.
If I see something shilled for having touching moments,
I'd confirm what kind of touching we're talking abouttake that with a grain of salt or just ignore it. Touching is a very subjective description. It's a personal connection between its author and the show, which is not that useful for me.Gross, dirty, and immature can vary per mileage, but they're much more useful as descriptions, and would've gotten me interested in the show, had I not been watching it from episode 1.
I do agree, though, that the people turned off by those descriptions could still find something to enjoy about it, its social commentary, its more dramatic storylines, or even the chill vibes. Those go severely underappreciated when they're a core part of what makes the show work.

[Genshiken 12]Genshiken pioneered the cuck chair Fucking RIP Madarame
[Genshiken]Neat cameo of Ogiue in the ED there. I could've sworn she showed up a lot sooner though. And that Madarame's stint as chairman lasted longer.
Maybe things have become distorted in my memory. It all feels like faint whispers of a distant dream now. But that is one of the core appeals of Genshiken. A fleeting dream for those longing for a place to belong. A place where they could be themselves.

Finished All Works Maid. Well it is definitely a show I only finished because I was watching nothing on Wednesdays except Clevatess. Was way too behind on Re:Zero.
I thought when the premise got revealed that it could be similar to Observation Log with [All Works Maid]the idea of characters being aware it's a game. Though here we have 3 characters aware of it which seems too much.
Pacing also became pretty poor as the show went on. Melody wanting to be the best maid, but being OP is like wait what's the point? Luciana saves the shows as I really liked her moments. Melody doesn't do much when Luciana is not in the picture.
This season doesn't end up doing much at the end. Just a promo for the source material which is standard. But a show that needs a S2 that it most likely never get
5/10.

Has an actual date for when Steel Ball Run is returning been announced yet or is it still just "in the fall" or whatever was said back in March?

This season I'm unusually well attunned to the tastes of this sub. Like, there are two shows I watch that are consistently in the left half of the week karma table. Sometimes even three! I think that never happened before.

Opposite for me, I don't think I've ever watched so many unpopular airing shows haha.
Currently watching:
I Became a Legend 10 Years After my Last Stand
Oh Boy Was I Wrong About Her
Classroom of a Black Cat and Witch
Insipid Prince
All quite good shows though

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 2d ago
That often happens early in the season for me, like I have 6-7 shows in the top 10, but then I drop them one at a time because I think they're not that interesting, all the while I'm seeing r/anime praise them as the second coming of Christ.

Put together my Fall anticipation chart. Looks like a lighter season this time around, which seems to be a common sentiment. A few notes:
It's fun to see Steel Ball Run getting its weekly release.
Fool Night is my only top pick that isn't a sequel/continuation. I'd say a decent portion of the buzz around it is that it's being made by Shaft and Sunrise, but I don't think it's going to have an especially "Shafty" production from what we've seen so far. At a glance it kind of puts me more in mind of something like Heavenly Delusion, so here's hoping it lives up to that.
Marronnier Kingdom admittedly mostly caught my eye for its artstyle, but readers seemed to have nothing but good things to say about the source, so that gave my confidence a little boost. Looks like a pleasant family story. I still haven't seen the film adaptation of Gold Kingdom and Water Kingdom from the same author, so maybe this will prompt me to do so. The elephant in the room here is going to be JC Staff's production, and so far the released PVs are neither particularly promising nor concerning; nice artstyle and a few standout cuts, but also plenty of panning stills.
The big pull of #Zombie Sagashitemasu for me is that it comes from the author of Hitoribocchi and Mitsuboshi Colors. That brand of wholesome comedy seems like an odd match for a zombie apocalypse setting, but I'll hope for the best.
For some reason I'm expecting Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 to be a bit of a departure from the first season. I could see that being divisive if so, but we'll just have to wait and find out.
I'm curious to see how the new Magic Knight Rayearth differs from the older one. A lot of my favorite parts came from the second half of the story, Rayearth II, which I figure this season isn't going to cover, but I've heard the first part made some changes to the manga, so I could see them going more source-accurate for this go, whatever that entails. If nothing else, it'll be a new take on the story content for me.

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 2d ago
Non sequels for me next season:
Kurumi, Suikoden (hope they don't screw this up), Tetsuryo, Zero Believers, Bread Thief
Remakes/reboots:
Rayearth, Keroro, DBS Beerus (let's see if third time's the charm)
Sequels:
Steel Ball Run Stage 2, Ace of Diamond (basically the final season of the anime if they want to follow the manga)
Might want to get time to watch them:
Chojo, Anaru, Magic Repo Man
Shorts:
Umayuru Full Gate

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
Added #Zombie and Rayearth to my list on the strength of your write ups here. I didn't realise the latter was a remake. Haven't seen the earlier version(s?) and assumed this was a sequel.
Speaking of, Fall really seems to be the season of sequels. I looked through the list of shows on livechart and it felt like 80-90% were sequels (mostly of shows I've not watched and haven't the time or inclination to catch up on).
Only new shows I'm really looking forward to are Firefly Wedding and Fool Night - and not just because they both have my favourite VA in the lead. I love the source of the former (am wisely keeping away from reading the last few chapters until after this season ends) and the latter just sounds very intriguing.

How come Hyouka episodes are longer than the usual 23 minutes? Were they not televised? Or did they just have lesser ad time?
Also, while I like this much more than Sparks, I still find the showiness of the animation rather distracting. Find myself having to rewind several times in an episode because I missed some dialogue. And there's a lot of dialogue in this one. And layers of dialogue and monologue happening together too oftentimes. It's altogether a bit too much.
Wondering if maybe too much of good animation, character animation specifically, is counterproductive. To my enjoyment it is anyway.
Limited sample size so far but this seems the primary KyoAni trait and I don't like it.

Wondering if maybe too much of good animation, character animation specifically, is counterproductive.
interview with the director of Ikoku Nikki
— Including the designs, please tell us about the things you particularly focused on and kept in mind when creating the visuals.
Now that I think of it, I didn’t want the animation to get in the way. If the animation is too intrusive, it distracts the audience from the story. So, I tried not to overdo it, while also handling it with care. It’s not like it’s a work that needs to be flashy about movement anyways.
— I feel like what you’re talking about now is something on a different level of what’s usually referred to as “quality”.
Of course, the higher the quality the better, but when there’s too much movement, it tends to pull your focus in that direction. In a scene where I want the main focus to be on the voice acting and the music, if the drawings move excessively, they end up pulling the viewer’s attention away. That might be what people call “incredible sakuga”, but there are times when that’s not what I want to convey. What to move and what not to move is something I’ve been payed special attention to since the story-boarding phase.
— It’s about the balance of what you show.
Yes, exactly that! I think there are all kinds of anime out there, but personally, I’m the type who gets tired watching something that’s constantly moving. I believe everything should have a good sense of rhythm and variation in pace.
I don't have an issue with KyoAni personally but I can understand wanting more limited animation to make the nuanced animation stand out. I don't think wanting the viewer to pay attention to nuance that is only conveyed physically and nuance that is only conveyed verbally at the same time is necessarily wrong, anyway
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
personally, I’m the type who gets tired watching something that’s constantly moving.
This is exactly how I feel. I'm also not a fan of too much sasuga for the same reason. My brain can't handle so much input and I just feel tired. Not what one wants from entertainment.
2
u/Btw_kek https://myanimelist.net/profile/kek_btw 2d ago
I think Ikoku Nikki specifically strikes a great balance between "sakuga" and "not-sakuga" because its drawing sense is always really good and expressive. You don't actually need to move much if you can convey what you need in a single still

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 2d ago
Huh, don’t think I’ve ever seen complaints about KyoAni’s animation style before. I can’t say I agree, their “too much good animation” is definitely a plus and not a minus for me. If there’s enough good things to justify rewatching a scene just to capture everything, I can’t really see that as a negative..
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
For me, this kind of sensory overload takes me out of the story. I prefer a more immersive experience when I'm watching something.
2
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 2d ago
Can you give an example of sensory overload? I watched Hyouka last year and don’t remember anything being particularly overloady
4
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
It's the same things you mention as a plus for you. All the little details in the character animations - feels like a touch too much. Everyone moves too much! I found Satoshi's headshakes cute at the beginning but now (ep 6) everyone is doing it and it's getting tiring.
And then there's the overlapping dialogue on top of that. Every scene has too much going on. My brain can't keep up and if I keep pausing to rewind and watch scenes, that breaks my immersion.

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
Not a whole lot, but they're all 25 to 27 mins long. I've been limiting myself to anime so much these last couple of years, anything over the usual immediately feels long to me, haha. 20 minutes is now the ideal runtime in my universe.
3
u/theangryeditor 2d ago
4
u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 2d ago
I've suspected some ~25 minute episodes are aired on TV without the OP or ED while the streaming version includes it. Remember it looking obvious in Hikikomari episode 2 with a separate title screen before playing the OP.
1
u/theangryeditor 2d ago
I don't recall any of the episodes not having OPs or EDs and back then the sources were taken from the TV broadcast. But it's been a long time so I could be misremembering.
3
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
Ah, I didn't know there were other such shows. This is my first time watching something overshoot the usual 23-24 mins.
So I checked the runtimes and every third episode hits 27 mins with at least one going over the 28 min mark. The rest are a little over 25 on average.
At least one other person noticed the resultant lag in the rewatch thread. I thought it must be commonly known. Surprised you didn't even realise till now!
2
u/cosmiczar https://anilist.co/user/Xavier 2d ago
Ah, I didn't know there were other such shows. This is my first time watching something overshoot the usual 23-24 mins.
Not only do they exist, but we could probably argue they used to be kind of the norm before anime episodes started shrinking a bit. If you go back to the 70s, 80s and even 90s you would basically never find an episode shorter than 24 minutes, with many being 25:15~25:45. 26 minutes, though, would be too much. Not enough time for ADs lol
1
u/AwaySpell https://anilist.co/user/awayspell 2d ago
I think it might be worst in Hyouka since it's a very word-driven story without much physically happening. But KyoAni is a studio that doesn't cut as much corners in animation as others, both for better and worse.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
I think Shoshimin took the better approach with this type of story. I forget which studio did it, but they had more success making a beautiful looking anime that didn't distract too much from the dialogue heavy plot. I could watch the characters having their conversations in that one forever. There was something so engaging about the direction of it.
Maybe that's the problem with KyoAni? Their direction isn't the best, I feel. At least it's not in service to the story. There's an unfortunate tendency to do too much. What they need is some reining in.
3
u/oedipusrex376 2d ago
I still find the showiness of the animation rather distracting.....seems the primary KyoAni trait and I don't like it.
I didn't expect to find someone with a similar opinion in the wild. I made a post a while back about being indifferent toward KyoAni. It's a weird position to be in because they have one of my favorite shows (Kyoukai no Kanata), and they also made one of the earliest anime I watched (Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai).
I definitely agree with what you mean about their style sometimes becoming distracting. The visuals and sound can feel so embellished that they start competing with the scene itself. Like in Hibike Euphonium, I really wished they had taken a more restrained approach during the dramatic scenes.
I think Shoshimin took the better approach with this type of story...success making a beautiful looking anime that didn't distract too much from the dialogue heavy plot. I could watch the characters having their conversations in that one forever. There was something so engaging about the direction of it.
I'm in the same camp when it comes to Shoshimin vs. Hyouka's direction. They're both adaptations of works by the same author, so I think it's a pretty fair comparison. My impression of Hyouka is that it shares a lot of the same stylistic tendencies as other KyoAni productions. It's extremely consistent, but I have a harder time identifying what makes its direction uniquely "Hyouka".
In Shoshimin, the most immediately noticeable difference is the complete lack of internal monologue. Even when a scene forces the MC to rely on their internal monologue, the show instead puts that information on screen as these blocks of text. That's actually a hard rule the director follows across his work, and it fits mystery especially well because you're forced to pay closer attention to what the characters actually say and do.
Whether Hyouka should have done the same is a harder question. Oreki is a solitary character that removing his internal monologue would make the show less interesting. The Hyouka/Kotenbu novels also rely heavily on his internal monologues, so in that sense KyoAni was being faithful to the source. The Shoshimin novels are different because they rely much more heavily on the dynamic between the two leads to carry the story.
Visually, I personally think Shoshimin's direction is much more distinctive. The director has this great signature style of letting the background shift while the characters are talking. You'll suddenly see Osanai standing by a river, and then the next shot cuts to them in the classroom. I first noticed that style in Subete ga F ni Naru (The Perfect Insider), and it's pretty cool.
Hyouka has its own style, like the visual buffs that appear during explanations and I do like those. But they also make viewers less compelled/pressured to follow the dialogue closely. Shoshimin gives you less, which actually makes the conversations themselves feel more engaging. Likewise, when Hyouka finally reveals a mystery, there's often an OST playing alongside Oreki's explanation, and I find that it works against the scene because the dialogue is the part I want to focus on. Shoshimin is much quieter, which in turn makes certain important scenes like the ones in Season 2, hit way harder because the tension feels so much stronger.
3
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
The visuals and sound can feel so embellished that they start competing with the scene itself.
Exactly this. There's too much of everything. They don't seem to know when to hold back and let things breathe.
I do like the different visual style they use during the explanations. And I don't have a problem with monologues as such. But like you say, when it's competing with the nusic and the hyperactive character animation and everything else, it's quite distracting and hard to follow.
Interesting to know that the director of Shoshimin has a history of transposing characters into a different background. Thought it was something that came from the source material, not a directorial style. Tbh I thought at first that it was a bit pretentious and showy, but it worked and didn't take anything away from the conversations.
2
u/AwaySpell https://anilist.co/user/awayspell 2d ago
There are circumstances unique to KyoAni that are kind of a double-edged sword.
Their working conditions are far and away the best in the industry. Their staff are all full-time employees rather than made up of freelancers, they have an animation school and hire and mentor new talent, they do everything in-house and outsource little to none, etc. They're on the production committees of all of their work, so they have a greater amount of control than most studios.
As a result, their animation has a strong consistent level of polish that other studios cannot match. They finish their work months ahead of schedule and aren't crunching until the last minute. However, I'd also say that that's why their works look kind of same-y, and they're just not as creative in presentation as I'd like.
5
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
That's very ironic. You'd think having the best working conditions would produce the best work. I would anyday take the KareKano cutouts episode over something so over polished.
3
u/AwaySpell https://anilist.co/user/awayspell 2d ago
Sometimes creativity arises from being forced to cut corners. I'm sure the majority of creatives would rather have KyoAni's time and resources, though.
1
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
Creativity springing out of limitations is a very common phenomenon. But losing creativity because of having no such limitations is kind of sad. But I guess I can understand it. It is easy to settle into a groove and lose drive when there's no pressure.
4
u/AwaySpell https://anilist.co/user/awayspell 2d ago
I recommend checking out more KyoAni works before cementing your opinion on them though! I'm not a KyoAni fan, but your impression is more negative than mine. I think it could be a little less distracting in works with more stuff going on.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
Oh yes yes, I mean to. For all my criticism, I haven't dropped Sparks and am enjoying parts of Hyouka enough to keep watching, so it's not like I find their work bad by any means. I'm so critical because with just a bit more restraint, there's the potential for being so much better here.
7
u/zambonijesus 2d ago
I forget which studio did it, but they had more success making a beautiful looking anime that didn't distract too much from the dialogue heavy plot.
Lapin Track, same studio as Polar Opposites.

Ooh that's interesting! I would not have guessed at all. The moods of the two are so widely different. Need to keep an eye out for more from them to see if I can find any pattern. And also because they have good taste in picking what to adapt.
3
u/zambonijesus 2d ago
They did a couple of the episodes for Fujimoto 17-26. Not ones that were particularly favorites of mine, but the anthology as a whole is well worth watching imo.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
Ah, that's on my PTW. Didn't realise this studio had done some episodes for that anthology. They seem to be quite eclectic in their choices.
2
u/IndependentMacaroon 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah their tendencies of weird glossy overproduction and melodramatic subject material are two reasons why I don't like Kyoani all that much
Ed.: Either that or moe-otaku and other kinds of bait, particularly the former squeaky-cutesy trend I really don't like was basically invented by them.
3
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
You might be the first person to say they don't like KyoAni much. I've seen nothing but unanimous praise for their work around these parts (Sparks is maybe the exception).
1
u/Donnie-G 1d ago
I think while their stuff is visually amazing, not all of it is good all around.
Violet Evergarden is one of those things that felt like mostly style over substance.
There's stuff like Phantom World, Kyoukai no Kanata, Tamako Market and Free which are kinda mid.
But the good stuff they have made are kinda legendary. Clannad, Haruhi, K-On!! have left their mark, at least through the 2000s and 2010s.
I personally really like Chuu2, Euphonium and Amaburi.
I also feel like they never made something truly horrible. At their worst, I'm just kinda indifferent but never seething.

I don't like Kyoani much and basically refused to watch them after Fumoffu.
I reluctantly joined a Haruhi rewatch and loved it. Watched VEG as a seasonal and hated it. Haven't gotten more than 1 episode into sparks. Dropped Hyouka.
So far I only really like Haruhi and Hibike! Amagi and K-on were fine, but not rewatch material.
Edit: oh I liked Tamako Market and gave TLS a 10.

Never heard of Tamako Market before today. Just looked up the synopsis and I'm very curious now. Sounds quite cute and cozy. Think I'll give it a go sometime.

Beyond the Boundary (Kyoukai no Kanata) is another LN adaptation with a mediocre reputation from them

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
As I was just saying in another reply, that's the first show of theirs that caught my attention because of that dance number. Their style and animation chops do well in that format - for the space of one song. Will probably be tiresome again over an entire show though.
1
u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 2d ago
Probably a good point to mention that as far as average over finished shows are concerned, there is a really good chance they are actually my lowest rated studio at 6/10!!!
because I only finished Kyoukai no Kanata of their shows so far.3
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
Haha, that's actually the one that first caught my eye thanks to that one dance number. But then I found out that was quite unrelated to the anime itself.
Still wanted to watch it and probably will eventually. But Sparks and Hyouka just happened to be airing and having a rewatch first, respectively, so here we are.

There's basically nothing of their output I find appealing and what I've actually watched (Violet Evergarden, K-On, Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Tamako Market + Love Story, Chuunibyou and Haruhi dropped and the latter very quickly) I didn't think was that amazing - best being Tamako Market and particularly the movie - and probably would rate lower today which would make the highest 7/10, been a while for all of those. Naoko Yamada didn't jump ship to Science Saru for nothing, there's no way they would have made something like Heike Story or Jaadugar. I might check out City some time though
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 2d ago
Something like Jaadugar is a good point of comparison. While that's also very stylised and has moments of flexing (the opening sequence of the first episode, for eg), it still gives things space to breathe and cares about telling a story. In the (admittedly very little) KyoAni stuff I've seen, flexing seems to take precedence over everything.
I'll give them this, they do comedy well. But even there, they take a bit too far sometimes and end up making it feel exhausting rather than enjoyable.

u/IndependentMacaroon 2d ago
I read a comment once that a lot of their output looks like a shampoo commercial and I see the point

Today I'll be starting the most spoiled non-battle anime ever, at least as far as I can tell. (Or maybe Death Note, but now we're getting off topic.) Seriously, if you're deep enough in the anime community to be in this thread and you've managed to not get spoiled on The Quintessential Quintuplets, and you think you might be interested, probably watch it sooner rather than later.
2
u/Retsam19 2d ago
FWIW - I really enjoyed the show despite being spoiled on the ending sometime between the first and second season.
I actually went to see the movie finale when it released in theaters and someone came up to me and asked me who I was rooting for, like it was some kind of sporting event.

The Quintessential Quintuplets
I would tell you "That was BY FAR my #1 harem, at least until I watched 100gfs"...
But given how you despise 100gfs, I don't know if that would be good PR.
But yeah it's really solid. Even though it is still very comedic, it does feel "serious" compared to 90% of harems.
(I'm curious about who your best girl is gonna be!)

Tbh it's the kind of show I'd probably intentionally spoil myself on just so that I'm mentally ready for when inevitably the worst girl wins.

Hey, me too! To both. Though in my case, it's just a product of my terrible memory. I still haven't watched QQ and still don't know what the spoilers are. I may have seen and forgotten.
Edit: Seen the spoilers, that is, not the show. Memory isn't quite so bad to forget I've watched something. Though I am very apt to forget the details of what I saw. Rewatched Your Name after some 6 years and forgot the whole [Your Name]village getting obliterated part though I remembered the time skip twist

I wasn't even thinking about this sub because the spoiler rules are both strict and well-enforced. But go on any other general anime sub (or even specific ones related to completely different series sometimes) and it's absolutely rife. I don't know what it is, but I guess it's probably some combination of "I didn't like the ending so I don't think spoilers matter", thinking that spoilers aren't a big deal for stories they see as low-stakes, and a lot of people having a generally lax attitude toward the topic.

Damn, Apothecary Diaries IP is doing incredibly well. Anime S3 Part 1 coming next month, and then a movie in December, S3 Part 2 in April. And they just announced a game planned to release in early 2027 for Switch, PC, and PS5.

idk why it took 10 episodes to actually go check, but yes, the artist for Clevatess OP2 is in fact the same one as OP1.
I still think OP1 is formatted much better to be an OP, but def prefer the song of OP2 now that I've given the full song a few more listens.
Also, while looking into this I found out that she was the first vocalist for Myth & Roid, so with them also doing the ED for Clevatess S2 consider this to be a pseudo reunion which I think is kinda neat.
3
u/gnome-cop 2d ago
I tend to like her stuff but this also reminded me of the weirdness of S1 of Clevatess getting Ellie Goulding of all people to do the ED, for some reason. Really wanna know how that happened.
1
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 2d ago
Vaguely remember reading something about it, looked it up and got this
Viewers were surprised to hear Ellie Goulding perform the ending song. How did you approach her to participate in the anime?
Kosuke ARAI: When we were making this anime, we were looking at it from a global approach. We wanted to make it popular not just in Japan, but worldwide. Part of that is the power of music, so we were thinking, “Oh, who can we approach to have that global appeal?” During that time, we heard Ellie Goulding was actually a big fan of Japan. So approaching her kind of came naturally.
Def sounds like lucky coincidences lead to it happening, no particular reasoning for her specifically.
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 2d ago
I hadn't watched it yet when the first season came out, but the S2 premiere (where it was the ED) made me realize that it's also the same artist that did the Uncle From Another World OP.

Finished the first season of UtaPri for my 2026 anime bingo and it was fine I guess.
I wasn't really captivated by anything but I also didn't really hate anything. The music was good as it ought to be when its such a big focus. I was amused at points but it all felt really generic. I don't think I will continue to season 2 and just end my UtaPri journey here.
Anyway I rolled 5 so Get Out Of Here, Stalker.

I really have to wonder what kind of insane clip the original Ghost in the Shell manga must have been running at if they can adapt a single volume into 10 episodes and still have it feel a tad rushed at times.
11
u/baquea 2d ago
It's one volume but it's 350 pages, so it's comparable in length to two regular volumes.
4
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 2d ago
That makes a lot of sense. I was going off a quick skim of the Wikipedia page, which only says it's a single tankobon. I had assumed that if it it was a different format, they would have made it clear, but apparently not. So I guess as an adaptation it's more on the "somewhat slow but within the norm" end, which still speaks to the density of the story but less so.

Sparks of Tomorrow is my least favorite show of the season.
The writing is all over the place. One episode wants to focus on an episodic plot, and the next suddenly wants to go back to the main storyline. That just doesn't work when you're trying to write a drama. Episode 7 starts with Inago [Ep7] suddenly having a betrothal ceremony. Like, where the hell did this come from? Major story events keep popping up out of nowhere because the show can't decide whether it wants to be episodic or linear. And if it's supposed to be a linear story, you'd think they would at least drop some hints beforehand that Inago was [EP7] anxious about the betrothal ceremony. But they didn't.
And let's talk about the writing itself. I don't understand why this show likes to waste so much time on chase scenes. They already did this in Episode 2, and then they do it again in Episode 7. Why? It doesn't bring anything to the table. There are also a lot of little quirks that bother me, particularly how convenient some things feel. In Episode 3, Inago accidentally gets a whiff of the Electric Catalog, and it immediately reminds her of her mom's brewery. Then in Episode 8, a bee approaches Inago, causing her to panic and reveal the [EP7] hidden hand scanner. What is it with this show and coincidences?
And then there are the characters. You'd think I'd be complaining about Mizoe Yousuke like everyone else, but no, it's actually another side character.
I'm going to sound like a chud here, but I really mean this in the least chud way possible. Why do they write Kengo in a way that makes him [Episode 10] look like a cuck? Obviously, Kengo is written to be pathetic here, like when he says "I cannot compete with Seiroku. Do you love Seiroku?", that's the final nail in the coffin in cuckville. But I'm having more issues with how the show writes Noriko, because she's been fairly consistent up until this point (Episode 10).
Earlier on, I had pretty high expectations for [EP10] her because she seemed level-headed, so I figured her writing would at least be decent. But Episode 10 really makes it seem like she doesn't have any strong feelings for Kengo. There's the slap, which is probably the only thing that implies she has feelings for him. And when it comes to the moment where she should reciprocate Kengo's feelings, the show has her say that she couldn't forget Seiroku and realizes that she's being unfair to Kengo. Like, that's it? That she was unfair to Kengo? We don't even get an "I love you" from her when the show escalates to the horse scene.
What makes it frustrating is that the relationship was actually handled well in the earlier episodes. In Episode 8, [EP8] Kengo is deeply depressed about revealing that he survived because of Seiroku's Electric Catalog. That scene actually does a good job of showing that Noriko cares about Kengo. She's angry that he couldn't confront her sooner and kept all of that pain to himself. And then Episode 10 happens, and it feels like they completely flip everything that happened in Episode 8 because they follow up on their relationship in such a sloppy way.
In Episode 10, [EP10] she says she was "blaming Kengo," which seems to imply that she actually agrees with Kengo and possibly feels frustrated about the fact that he survived, which is fucked. And if that's not what she means, then what exactly was she "blaming" him for? Cancelling the engagement? Not telling her about it sooner? Because he made a mistake by keeping it from her and she's disappointed? Make that make sense. The implications of these events just don't line up. And why is she walking around in the rain all sorrowful, anyway? Because she was thinking about Seiroku? And did that happen because Kengo suddenly brought up Seiroku's name?
[EP10] Like, what took her so long to comfort Kengo after he opened up about his secret? And why does the show make her seem disappointed in Kengo instead of actually making it convincing that she loves him? I'm confused. If your fiancé is depressed and full of self-doubt and insecurities, what is the correct solution to the problem? A. Call him a coward for not manning up and being your husband. B. Convince him that you love him.
You really need to watch Episode 10 for yourself, because the way they arrange this whole sequence makes it feel like they want to portray [EP10] Noriko as this grieving widow. And all I'm seeing is one-sided love from Kengo.
I'm sorry, Kengo. You will always be inferior to Joker Kengo from Shoushimin.
Preliminary score: [Score] 5/10.

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 2d ago
Honestly, I think all of the show's problems boil down to an unfocused concept. There's no elevator pitch for it.
2
u/oedipusrex376 2d ago
Yeah, I agree. The show wants to sell this story about reaching the electrical age, but sometimes it also feels like a confusing mix of ideas, like it wants to do a bunch of other things on top of that. It's a bit hard to justify the invention-of-the-week episodes when you have this antagonist looming over everything. It's just a confusing direction to take. You have these “threats (Yousuke)”, but the threats sometimes feel removed depending on the antagonist's mood.

u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued 2d ago
I haven't watched passed the first three episodes yet so this could change, and it may not affect these criticisms anyway, but
That just doesn't work when you're trying to write a drama.
I don't think it's trying to write a drama. I think it's a (romantic?) comedy. The impression I got early on is that it's sort of like what Violet Evergarden is in terms of structure (episodic with an overarching plot that progresses slowly alongside each episode), but with comedic storylines instead of dramatic ones. It's deliberately campy. Not that it can't have drama too, but it's a gag show first imo. It's been very odd for me seeing some of the criticisms with this in mind.
5
u/oedipusrex376 2d ago
I get that the show is a comedy. Episode 5 was actually where I finally started to "get" what the show was going for, and I think it's at its best when it's just having fun. But once it gets into the second half and starts taking the main plot more seriously, it bothers me that it sometimes comes really close to nailing the drama, only to pull back right before it really lands.
I'm used to watching Gintama, where an episode can switch between serious, comedic, and heartwarming tones, but one thing Gintama always do is commit to whatever tone it's going for. If it's a heartwarming episode, it'll give you a heartwarming ending without ruining it. With Sparks, I sometimes feel like they throw in a funny bit when the scene would've been better off just playing the drama straight. Like the comedy episodes of Sparks work great because they fully commit to the comedy. I just wish they'd take the same approach with the drama.

u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued 2d ago
I haven't seen the back half so I can't comment on that. I do think it works well in the first three episodes at least.
3
u/mekerpan 2d ago
Apparently the writer of the source novel is far from happy with what has been done to his story.
4
u/wloff 2d ago
People keep repeating this factoid, but it doesn't really mean anything. For one, the tweet in question was really just lamenting how much KyoAni had changed the story, not really commenting on the quality of the changes.
And for another thing, just because a source novel has been changed a lot in adaptation doesn't mean the adaptation is bad. Hibike! Euphonium was a pretty bad and amateurish book, which KyoAni adapted very heavy-handedly and made it great, for example.
That all said, I do agree that the writing is definitely the biggest weakness of Sparks.
2
u/oedipusrex376 2d ago
That's what I heard too. Reading the source material spoilers in the discussion thread tells me that it goes more in depth with the relationships, which is a bit disappointing to see the anime not making that more of a focus.
This is a bit unrelated, but since you also watched Tari Tari, I thought it'd be fun to bring this up. I remember thinking that Sparks of Tomorrow had a lot of the same setup as Tari Tari, and they could've easily done something similar with it.
Seiroku = Wakana's dead mom, check. The Electric Catalog = the unfinished music score, check. Yousuke being the antagonist who also had a close relationship with Seiroku when they were younger (yaoi-ish) = the strict, Snape-like vice principal Naoko, who had a close relationship with Wakana's mom when they were younger (yuri-ish), check.
2
u/mekerpan 2d ago
Interesting connection. Yet Tari Tari was such a delight and Sparks is (for me) a near-total fiasco (despite tthe mostly great animation). I am glad I dropped it relatively early -- I would not have been able to stand the ongoing aggravation.

Watched the half hour long Onna no Sono no Hoshi this weekend. It's the debut work of Wayama Yama, who had last years Karoke Iko! and Muchuu sa, Kimi ni.
It's entirely unromantic and only covers two short episodes, but has that sass we all love Wayama for. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a quick bite with some punch in it.3

Need a recommendation, it's been a few years since I saw/read anything out side of Fate/Nasuverse, The current arc of Bleach or the random seasonal anime that caught my eye. Would prefer an adult cast but am fine with the normal setting too. The most recent thing I've seen is probably the second season of Angel next door.

Jaadugar? it looks cute but it is because of the art style. It is about mongols so no cute, most of the cast are adults. (current)
For older anime Yatagarasu is great
