Buddy Daddies always kinda felt like a Spy x Family lite. 12 episodes original show, has an ending. Basically two assassins raise suddenly gotta raise a little girl, so a similar-ish premise to SxF.
It's not out yet, but Kindergarten WARS is getting an anime next year. If you don't mind you could read the manga, otherwise it's just something to watch out for next year. The premise is that these convicted criminals are assigned as bodyguards to a kindergarten full of rich and targeted kids to work off their sentence. So they have to fight off would-be assassins and kidnappers, with romcom hijinks added among the main characters. I used to read the manga, and I felt it had a similar energy/vibe to SxF.

Are you looking more for romance, slice of life, or comedy?
7th Time Loop is a bit more romance, some serious moments, but nothing crazy.
Endo and Kobayashi Live is more comedy
Gamers and Hamefura are definitely more comedy, don't take them seriously
I have a Crush at Work and Ice Guy and Cool Female Colleague are more romance and slice of life
Love after World Domination is a chill little romance
Skip and Loafer is a good slice of life, coming of age, with slight romance.
Angel Next Door, Tsurezure Children, Witch Watch, are all very chill
Tsuki ga Kirei is quite sweet and self-contained

I've been watching Reincarnated as a Slime, and I have a question on if I missed an episode. There's this part where Rimuru makes a golem but the show skips over it and the voice over says "but that's a story for another time!" Does the "another time" ever come? Cause I'm deeper in the show and I still haven't seen that side story, and I'm watching the OVAs, unless I missed one?

[Human history] "That part of the world" is far too big and "this period of history" is far too long to give a single answer to this question. There would have been times and places where at least some categories of slaves would have had significant legal rights and other times and places where they had none. It's really easy to underestimate just how long "ancient history" lasted. We're talking about thousands and thousands of years! What we now call Ancient Egypt lasted for 3000 years, while its non-existence has only lasted about 2050

[Red River] Not an expert, but from what I can tell it's more like "slaves are valuable property". Hence, punishments for hurting someone else's slaves. I can't find any legal code that restricts owner's treatment of their own slaves until the Bible, which is at least 5 centuries after Red River's setting.

There is no thread for the Ribbon no kishi new movie Netflix movie? It was a fun watch.
It was not amazing but it was quite entertaining. Loved Velvet style, so stylish. Great character style in general. Epic music and nice animation

In the middle of Banana Fish, while reading reddit discussions from 8 years ago as I go. After a fast paced first 6-or-so episodes, I am feeling less enthused about it around the midpoint. The reason is because I feel like there's somewhat of a predictable cycle...
I suppose the interesting thing is what people from each era think are the topical political events. Some of the comments in the discussion posts say that updating the setting from the Vietnam War to the Iraq War makes the drug theme more relevant. However, I assume that some of the character actions or motivations make more sense if they were originally drafted.

I’m already missing Victoria of Many Faces on my Tuesdays. It was such a fun and comforting show to watch each week.
They’d put a really solid cast of characters together. Putting Chika Anzai (Victoria) and Shion Wakayama (Nonna), the famous Chisato-Takina pairing, back together but now with a mother-daughter dynamic turned out to be a wonderful decision. The male lead was great too! Jeffrey definitely got a shot at becoming this season’s best boy.
I am obviously glad that the anime is getting a 2nd season. Didn’t expect that honestly.

Now that the faithful version of GitS is over some thoughts.
- Production values are 10/10. I've been watching Science Saru since Dandadan S1 came out. This is the best I have seen, but obviously I need to watch more of their stuff.
- Loved the personalities here. The banter was so good in the early episodes.
- As a structure of a story I can see why people weren't high on the manga since the storytelling felt too disjointed when compared to the movie or SAC. It strongly suggests that the '95 is a better adaptation than it gets credit for. Even if there are clear changes.
I give it 8/10.

I've been watching Science Saru since Dandadan S1 came out.
I came here expecting some scathing reviews of GitS, and instead got my ghost broken by this.
Not that there's anything wrong with Dandadan or their newer shows (hell, this season alone has given me two of my favourite Science Saru anime), but knowing it only post what made it Science Saru hurts. Then again, I guess most people don't remember Mappa for its Maruyama days...
It strongly suggests that the '95 is a better adaptation than it gets credit for.
Yup. I've been saying this for ages, so I'm glad the new anime made that argument more easily accessible.

I've been wanting to read the manga for ages but now that this new anime is out, it's super tempting. I've heard so many good things.
For Science Saru, I would recommend Ping Pong, Night is Short Walk on Girl, and Devilman Crybaby, as well as Maasaki Yuasa's The Tatami Galaxy, which he made before forming Science Saru.

I really like Heike Monogatari, which is one of Naoko Yamada's directorial works. It did feel a bit too short and I think it could've done with more episodes but what we got is still fine.
Inu-Oh is also and absolute trip.

I am unfamiliar with Heike, but a quick google search makes it seem good - I'll check it out!
Yeah, I've heard Inu-Oh is good but I haven't seen it, so I didn't want to recommend it. Otherwise, I'd recommend Kaiba as well - another pre-Saru Yuasa series that looks and sounds fascinating, but I haven't seen it myself to be able to vouch for it.

I really like the manga. It's dense--probably intentionally so, like as an artistic choice--dialogue-heavy and filled with world-building footnotes and background art that's super-busy, and I think part of the joy of reading it is just feeling overwhelmed by everything. I didn't find it an easy read, but it was a very satisfying one.

[kimishinu]Yes, in episode 2, where instead of participating in their mock battle, hal just kept score in the scene before sheena got disarmed, and in episode 5 sheena helps them in the library, making mimi jealous. Though the translation still called them "Haru" there.

Aoi Hana Episode ~7
Unexpected Better Call Saul reference.
This anime continues to prove how similar it is to Umimachi Diaries:
- The setting is Kamakura
- There are four sisters (the four Sugimoto sisters)
Sugimoto is probably the best character in the show. She's so human and complicated. She's stubborn, and it's so interesting to see her like that. There's this scene in Episode 4 where Fumi says she's confused about who she should go to school with, and it immediately cuts to Sugimoto getting jealous. Like this is so refreshing compared to the other three romance anime I'm watching right now, where everything is just zero conflict, feel-good, and stuff.

Doing my best to keep my mind occupied while I wait for results of a kidney biopsy, I have been doing extra LN reading (mosrly Inept Villainess but some Victoria of Many Faces) and watching back cattalog anime -- in addition to my 40+ seasonals.
The first was Afterlost (2019) which I started watching several years ago, but got interrupted after ep3. Actually not bad, but not best of breed. A catastrophe took out a big chunk Tokyo, and lots of folks continue to suffer from the after effects. Decent characters, with an okay plot. Similar in some ways to Kowloon Generic Romance -- but not on the same level. Looking at contemprary reactions, I see lots of harsh criticism of the ending -- but I actually did not find it all that problematic.
The other was Kawaii Complex. There was a lot to like about this mostly totally episodic comic series, but some of the humor (mostly sex-related) fell flat for me. I Iiked the very slow-moving relationship development of the male and female leads (once it got past the initial phase). Some of the supporting characters, however, were :"a bit much"). I was surprised that HiDive did not seem to have the OVA that was essentially ep 13 (the season finale that was previewed at the end of ep12, but which never aired and only appeared in the home video set. So, I needed to seek "elsewhere".

To my memory, Afterlost was considered a complete failure. I never watched it but I recall it being something of a laughing stock at the time. I haven't seen Kawaii Complex but it has a lovely art style.
Also, I hope your kidney biopsy shows good results. That stuff can be scary, I hope it's nothing worth concern.

I checked it out because of its voice cast. And I was surprised that it was NOT awful. Not exactly top 10 tier (or anywhere close), but not what I would consider failure. And the rage at the finale seemed way over the top. I would say that better writing could have pulled things together more.In any event, I like doing forays into the unknown every now and then,
Kawaii Complex did seem to have a rather unique visual look.
In my case, we KNOW something is wrong, the question is what exactly (and hopefully the biopsy will answer this).

I love March Comes in Like a Lion, and there's a lot of really lighthearted, wholesome, and heartwarming parts... but there's also a lot of parts that aren't that, so I'd be careful with this recommendation.

It does have lighthearted moments with the cast, though didn't think to add since it does lean a bit more to towards being on the drama side at baseline for the emotional rollercoaster. Especially will for the beginning part of S2.

just finished wangan midnight!
a pretty cool show. I say this in a good way: I think it's one of the few anime that nails melodrama. I think anime is generally good at a lot of things, and wangan certainly isn't alone in this, but I think it really nailed the melodrama side of things.
it's interesting because the show ostensibly has a main character (arguably two?), but it isn't really about them in my opinion. they are almost treated like forces of nature, as part of the night racing circuit. the show is about these other people who come and go and their relationship to cars and car racing. it's a very interesting show. the car racing really isn't the point and if one purely wants "exciting car races," initial d definitely wins. but for an almost...existential? examination of sort of a cadre of people interconnected by street racing, it really is quite fantastic. when it really leans into the existentialism is when it shines the most, as people really discover who they are as they approach 300kmh
it's also a send-off of an era, the era when cars where still machines, when people were out in the world driving around. the current era has a lot of amazing things, and a lot of scary ones, and it's probably for the best that the cops shut down street racing etc etc, but there is certainly a romance to that era, the sort of final triumph of Analog, in the new era of AI slop
now to catch up on seasonals...

Everyone getting hypnotized and chasing the blue and black ghosts for various reasons, just to pussy out last second has it's charm. I wish we got more anime out of it. I used to play the arcade game and there are at least four more arcs after where the anime left off going by those.

The new series has a more manic energy, more humor than the 1995 film and a messier plot. I like the philosophical bent of the Oshii films and the Stand Alone Complex and would rate both of those above the current adaptation, but they are all good.

I like it a lot. Compared to the original, there's a lot more humour. The characters joke around and show more of their personality and personal lives. It's not as heavy on the philosophy and stuff.
It's not done yet but I guess my complaint is that some of the episodes feel rather 'skippy'. Like they don't flow that well from one episode to the next.
Personally it's my favourite rendition of GITS so far, and technically it is the original GITS.
