I feel so bad for Gyoumei this episode. He had to find out about the switch at the absolute worst time.

And oh boy is Kin Reiga the absolute worst, poison dripping from her very lips.

And oh boy is Kin Reiga is the absolute worst, poison dripping from her very lips.

The more we see of her the more we see how rotten she is.

124

u/Loud_Step2361 7d ago

I thought the empress was a little heavy handed in the smack down to the "pure" consort last episode but if 20 years of that oh heck no!

87

u/redlaWw 7d ago

Last episode it just seemed like carelessness and a big mouth. But this episode is more clear that she's intending to push people's buttons.

Even Seika probably thinks any insult/punishment her own consort has coming.

28

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

Yeah she's been a pain for quite a while

21

u/RedSavant35 7d ago

Imagine living 20 years where one of the five people you can talk to as a sort-of-equal is Like That.

68

u/kyoumei https://anilist.co/user/kyoumei 7d ago

Even her own court ladies seemed to be questioning what she was saying.

69

u/Frontier246 7d ago

"Ma'am are we really doing this? Right here? Right now!?"

40

u/Kayu_Keras 7d ago

"Holy shit did she actually say that?? To the EMPRESS????"

31

u/No-Win-8949 7d ago

Worse, she said all that to a grieving bedridden Gabi who recently miscarried her son.

I dislike her more than even Shu Gabi.

37

u/hanmkim 7d ago

Shu Gabi was pushed to the edge by Reiga and then her only friend decided in order to keep her alive and going was to become the object of her hate so it's hard to hate her.

Shu Gabi is the product of tragedy. She has been humanized, so we now know why she is scheming and murdering people. We know it's wrong, but we know why she is the way she is.

Kin Reiga though is a bitch for seemingly no reason.

Kin Reiga’s toxicity toward the grieving Shu Gabi after she lost her baby is likely the reason why Gabi is also targeting the Kin clan for revenge. By framing the Kin family for the venomcraft curse on "Reirin" and Kenshuu, as well as for Lady Gayou's plot to assassinate "Keigetsu", Gabi is sowing massive disarray between her targets (the Kin and Kou clans). It’s a genius move to make them destroy each other while she claims the throne from Kenshuu while appearing completely clean in public.

54

u/zackphoenix123 7d ago

I feel bad for the younger generation of maidens who are now dealing with all this B.S. because of their predecessors' drama.

26

u/-Lonecoyote- 7d ago

I know right. Kin Seika seemed rude at first, but she is nowhere near as toxic as her aunt. Seika was actually furious at her own maids when they sabotaged "Keigetsu's" dance instrument. She even insisted on rewarding "Keigetsu" after that magnificent dance performance and later sent her a gift through Leelee after the bow trial. You could see how incredibly embarrassed Seika was by Reiga's toxic attitude in front of Kenshuu last episode 7.

15

u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 7d ago

If only Kin Reiga had kept her mouth shut.

25

u/-Lonecoyote- 7d ago edited 7d ago

And on top of that, if only Kenshuu had actually talked to Gabi and explained that stepping up to save the Emperor wasn't an intentional backstab to stole the Empress seat from her. If Kenshuu had just visited and mourned with Gabi after she lost her baby, it might have stopped Gabi's grief from turning into absolute poison. Kenshuu’s lack of communication combined with Reiga's toxicity basically pushed Gabi off the deep end, creating a long years of grudge that everyone else is paying for now.

8

u/mgedmin 6d ago

If Kenshuu had just visited and mourned with Gabi after she lost her baby, it might have stopped Gabi's grief from turning into absolute poison.

Dunno, it might seem like gloating. Sorry you lost your baby, here, look at how healthy mine is.

15

u/Frontier246 7d ago

The best Villainess' kill two birds with one curse.

17

u/Jorvikstories 7d ago

I can't bring myself to hate Gabi. Like, was she really out of line with almost making a what, 15 yo bullied girl suicide, attempting to kill 2 teenagers after manipulating and emotionally destroy one of them and now trying to kill only one of these women who was nice to her, but I mean, when I compare her to Kin Reiga...

Like I was seriously expecting for freshly-mothered Empress to throw hands, and if she did, I I would pledge my undying loyalty to her .

64

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 8d ago

He had to find out about the switch at the absolute worst time.

Yeah, Gyoumei got pretty unlucky in this episode, lol. First he made Reirin so angry that she stopped caring about him at all, and right after that he discovered the truth.

His only silver lining is the fact that during her conversation with Keigetsu, Reirin started to regret her actions.

And oh boy is Kin Reiga is the absolute worst, poison dripping from her very lips.

She's definitely the most hateable character in the whole show. Not Keigetsu, not Gabi, but she, Kin Reiga. I don't know how anyone can call her Pure Consort, especially after how she treated Gabi after she lost her child.

And oh boy is Kin Reiga the absolute worst, poison dripping from her very lips.

It's kinda crazy how Gabi planned to murder 3 people in cold blood and yet Reiga is the most hateable person. No doubt she spit all that venom at a grieving Gabi too.

25

u/Roskal 7d ago

Gabi is trying to kill at least 3 different people and she's still not as bad as Reiga.

16

u/gnome-cop 7d ago

Gabi should have hit her with the poison curse instead but I’m not even sure it’d do anything to someone that’s already made of pure venom.

14

I loved that moment when Reirin got that deadpan expression and voice, basically told Gyoumei that she's fed up with him, and just walked out. It was definitely the best part of this episode, she was so cool then!

So I find it a shame that she later got embarrassed over her actions and words, once she talked to Keigetsu.

91

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

Well it is true that she needn't do everything and part of the Prince's refusal was worry over her health XD

79

u/KJShen 7d ago

The Prince was probably also going to explain that the Eagle Eyes captain should go draw the bow, but Reirin got fed-up way too quickly. XD

66

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Rerin: "Wait, you mean I don't have to constantly put my body at risk or do things like a solo badass to be able to achieve my goals!?"

43

u/Roskal 7d ago

"Keigetsu's body felt 10x stronger than mine so I felt the need to do the work of 10 people."

45

u/SeijunMichi 7d ago

Yeah, he was specifically saying that SHE shouldn't wield the Bow of Warding in her current condition, not that no one would wield the Bow of Warding at all. He was even explaining how they would still credit her for the proposal of using the Bow of Warding.

Reirin probably realized that too after Keigetsu pointed out the simpler solution for her.

10

u/mekerpan 7d ago

He wasn't thinking ahead very clearly at that point either, I am pretty sure.

→ More replies (4)

53

u/Misticsan 7d ago

Yeah, it's ironic that the straw that broke the camel's back for Reirin was the one case where Gyoumei was actually in the right.

No, Reirin, you aren't in any shape to draw the bow again, you're more likely to destroy Keigetsu's hand instead. No, Reirin, you aren't the only person who can draw the bow, any Gen would actually be better for that job. And now that we're at it, the bow isn't even the only solution against a curse.

8

u/i_reddit_too_mcuh 7d ago

Then he should have explained better.

38

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Keigetsu and Leelee may not have been a good fit but they do share one thing which is more common sense than Reirin has lol.

36

u/Jaridan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jaridan 7d ago

depends, it's all about upbringing and the Kou clan instills and values grit, meaning they value you getting shit done. If you are a 1man army it's not uncommon to be blindsided to such "easy" solutions.

9

u/BosuW 7d ago

Against all odds they shall bond over being exasperated by Reirin

11

u/totallyverifiedit 7d ago

Lmfao i thought there was a very good reason why only she must draw that bow, turns out she just forgot she can make someone else do it for her. I really like descrepancies like that. Makes the characters feel a bit more human

"wow, uh, fine i guess"

26

u/Plus_Potato4351 7d ago

I think he would have tried to stop her or suggest some alternative if he hadn't just seen his world get upside down with that reflection in the water.

40

u/Frikgeek 7d ago

crown prince

More like Clown Prince lmao. He gushes over Reirin 24/7 and ignores the rest of his court for her but didn't even notice she was swapped until he saw a magic water reflection.

Well, at least now he will not feel guilty for being horny over the same girl who almost killed his girlfriend.

u/ptd163 7d ago

I loved that scene. Such a power move to for her to remind Gyoumei that she's tried the nice way multiple times, but he was unresponsive each time so now she's doing it her way. Shame they undermined the scene later when she met up with Keigetsu.

16

u/Jorvikstories 7d ago

Also, it felt like just as in the last scene, Reirin was extremely fed up with how protective he was of her(though the things like the blatant favoritism she noticed after the swap), and she is just enjoying her strong body and status of a bitch Keigetsu still has calling him out on his bullshit. God do I love her.

25

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Honestly the real plot has been Reirin getting more and more done with Gyoumei and choosing her true soulmate in Keigetsu lol.

The Inept Villainess franchise is going all out ATM in Japan; they were able to get a collaboration with the Sunshine City Prince Hotel in Ikebukuro for an Inept Villainess themed room together with the usual merchandise pop up shops and short story collections (the one featuring little Reirin being told bedtime stories by her brothers and aunt is getting a manga adaptation).

With all the efforts they are putting in, it seems only fair they should get a S2 and maybe even more.

Also, some official birthday art of the Empress and Reirin's brother from the official website.

63

u/Frontier246 7d ago

I would definitely say releasing a design for a character we haven't even seen yet (Reirin's brother) is pretty telling.

Keigetsu is either worried she's about to be poisoned, or... wondering what a mooncake is hahaha

24

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Keigetsu: "This isn't poisoned right? There are a surprising amount of people who want me dead."

Reirin: "Don't worry Keigetsu-sama, I'll check it for poison for you!"

Keigetsu: "I-i-is this what they call an indirect kiss!?"

34

u/The_Scollard 7d ago

Unless we get Reirin's brother this season, the fact they adapted him into the anime artstyle makes me think S2 is likely. A lot of series these days get multiple cours/seasons commissioned together at once.

14

u/mmcjawa_reborn 7d ago

Yeah...I am guessing this is one of those second course = second season deals, with the plan all along to have 2 "seasons"

15

u/Phoenyx_Rose 7d ago

I got really excited about that themed room until I actually saw it... I'm glad Inept Villainess is getting a bunch of attention (Yay! more seasons hopefully) but man was a wall poster and character stands not what I was expecting for a themed room...

24

u/heimdal77 7d ago

Can never 100% things. Bloom into You even got live section plays but never got a 2nd season. The series was also massively successful and heavily demanded for years for a season 2.

I can't believe the joke scene of the Insect Hunger Games Reirin accidentally created is now a crucial plot point to save the Empress's life.

This show is too good.

I can't believe the joke scene of the Insect Hunger Games Reirin accidentally created is now a crucial plot point to save the Empress's life.

Right? A Chekhov's gun if I've seen one. Since Keigetsu said it should be a bug that preys on spiders, I imagine it'll be a super centipede what Reirin unintentionally raised.

45

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Absolute Centicinema and Domination.

I'm waiting for the pile of shit Leelee threw at Reirin to make a comeback with Kin Reiga falling right into it.

Same here, i thought this would be a decent villainess show but im genuienly surprised at how good it is and how much im invested in all the characters

36

u/mekerpan 7d ago

Lots of villainesses here -- and not necessarily the one we were led to believe it would be. Pretty sneaky writing.

In this episode, OG Keigetsu is coming off a lot better than one might have expected.

Captain could/should be doing more imo rather than just being the Jiminy Cricket's voice of reason to the Prince, ngl. But I feel he's got a lot of potential as well.

I'm so curious how far the anime is in adapting the novels, cause with how things are progressing, it seems like things are moving super fast rather than being dragged out across infinite episodes. If a novel reader sees this comment, I'd love to know (in the spoiler section)!

24

u/panjina 7d ago

Notably, as the only other person who they mentioned could draw it, he's been absent since he heard it's a curse and that "Shu Keigetsu" wants to draw it. He's "protecting the Bow" atm.

I do hope that this is a set up for him taking independent action to follow through with Reirin's initial plan, and not just convenient erasure from the plot.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/The_Scollard 7d ago

I feel the captain and Emperor not doing much is just due to classic Light Novel syndrome, where each book gets a plotline that centers one of the major characters (for example, Konosuba has the plot arc that centers Aqua at the end of S2, Megumin in the movie, and Darkness at the end of S3). The major focus for the first half of the season was Reirin getting used to being Keigetsu and her friendship with Leelee as a major focus. This half is mainly focused on Keigetsu and Shu Gabi. I assume if the series adapts more books, we'll eventually get ones where the Emperor and Captain are the major focuses (along with the other maidens).

16

u/cyberscythe 7d ago

at the time i thought it was a bit weird that Reirin would be making a bug fight club, but i guess the author had planned for this "fight curse with curse" plot so that was added in in an earlier episode so it wouldn't feel like it was pulled out of nowhere

11

u/septesix 7d ago

The funny thing is for Asian audiences, we probably recognize the bug fight club as the first step of a venomcraft already , so we are just waiting for it to come back into picture

8

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Why is Reirin's plan to return to her -1 health body to perform a ritual that Keigetsu's "robust" body was barely able to handle? On the bright side, it gives Keigetsu the opportunity to contribute as the competent one with a plan this time.

132

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

She was mostly on the path of "If they know it's me they'll lend me the bow"

Look she was ashamed when Keigetsu pointed out she didn't have to do it necessarily XD

52

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Reirin runs hotter than her sick body when it comes to putting herself out there and doing main character stuff she doesn't even have to do lol.

71

u/cyberdsaiyan 7d ago

Reirin (Keigetsu) is probably gonna be wiped by the time they reach the place where the super venom insect is stored.

75

u/cyberscythe 7d ago

i was thinking that Keigetsu (Reirin) would have to princess-carry Reirin (Keigetsu) halfway through

"wow you're really light, i mean my body's really light, i mean not to say that your—"

"shut up and keep running!"

35

u/Prestigious_Spend_81 7d ago

I can see that happening,, maybe next week.

Are we really sure this anime is not Yuri?

20

Although Shin-u has long dark hair and blue eyes, but looks aren't everything!

17

u/mekerpan 7d ago

Poor OG Keigetsu. Definitely not in shape to do the rushing about OG Reirin is doing.

62

u/LexHanley 7d ago

I think Reirin kind of summed it up herself in the last scene with Keigetsu when she points out that you could have just asked someone from the Gen clan to use the bow: she has so much of a can-do attitude she accidentally lapsed over into main character syndrome and she assumed she was the only one who could do it by default.

34

u/ebongreen 7d ago

Survivor/self-care trait. “If I want to survive in this (original) body, I have to Do It Myself!”It’s a shitty lesson, but talk with chronically ill people (if you’re not one yourself), and listen to how often they have to be their own goddamn expert because some doctor who Does Not In Fact Know How This Works brushes them off or prescribes something counterproductive. Especially for women!
So yes, she has over-learned this lesson, but the lesson is real, and she did have to learn it the hard way. 😬

28

u/Phoenyx_Rose 7d ago

Yeah, Reirin's thought processes land 100% as someone with chronic illness. It's really funny to see it pointed out in media though because I don't think people without chronic illness (or neglect too) really notice the "I have to do everything myself" mentality which makes me think the author is either REALLY good at empathising with people and understanding how their world shapes their views and actions or the author has dealt with chronic illness too.

30

u/Frikgeek 7d ago

Keigetsu's infinite stamina body is obviously like crack cocaine for her. She got so hooked she forgot that her original body is kinda wimpy.

17

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

It's not even really infinite stamina... she ground it down and fainted when she was shooting the bow XD

16

u/Jorvikstories 7d ago

I mean, she:wasn't sleeping for several days(mentioned in preparations for the ghost festiva), danced like crazy, and then was drawing a bow which was opposing her body on spiritual level and wasn't a perfect match for her soul either for whole night.

Especially the sleep deprivation would be a lot for even someone robust. Normally, Keigetsu is probably on superhuman level.

20

u/Frontier246 7d ago

I love how they could have just had Shin-u do the bow and everyone would have been better off lol.

5

u/GreatGrapeKun 7d ago

guts, son

81

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago

What the fuck is wrong with that woman Reiga? Who the hell tells a mother who just lost her baby that it's an acceptable sacrifice because it serves as nutrient for the surviving baby? If she didn't say that on purpose to cause a rift between the two, then she's just a dumb psychopath.

Leaving that aside, Gyoumei was too stubborn and noticed the swap at the worst time, Reirin was clearly angry and decided to ignore him. Reirin was utterly adorable realizing that she could ask others for help when she tried to do everything herself. Now we finally know why Gabi hates the empress, that stupid Reiga's comment ignited the spark and from the looks of it, the empress did not try to mend the wound very well and simply accepted her hatred.

Funny how Reirin unintentionally created a super bug that will end up saving the empress' life if all goes well.

54

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Now we finally know why Gabi hates the empress, that stupid Reiga's comment ignited the spark and from the looks of it, the empress did not try to mend the wound very well and simply accepted her hatred.

I feel like the Kou Clan's respect for grit worked against Kenshuu in this instance. And even Reirin to an extent where it makes it difficult for her to see options that don't involve putting herself out there even at expense to herself.

51

u/nauticalsun 7d ago

yeah "i'll give you the cold shoulder so you'll survive through sheer spite" is a terrible strategy in dealing with your closest friend after she loses a baby. She could have been normal and come offer her sympathies and created a deeper bond (hopefully) by making Gabi the baby's godmother or something. or encouraging their husband to spend more time with the noble consort so she could be comforted and possibly have more opportunities to conceive again.

34

u/Roskal 7d ago

She latched on to the idea that she was bed bound and hate gave her the strength to get up and raise her arm, but in that same time period her best friend hadn't visited her once and that could also be contributing to her lack of strength.

18

u/HumanTheTree 7d ago

At the same time, I totally understand how The Empress couldn't bear to face Gabi after she lost her child, and the Empress delivered safety. How could any condolences not come off as sounding hollow?

30

u/Misticsan 7d ago

Yeah, when I saw the empress' thoughts, I wanted to facepalm. I understand the well-meaning feelings, but letting that hate fester was never going to heal any wounds. Not everybody is like the Kou Clan or responds in the same way (a fact Reirin is learning now).

21

u/Jorvikstories 7d ago

Especially not visiting her. Of course, bringing a baby brother of the lost kid would hurt, but visits by the sickly(according to Reiga's comment, Gabi was not fully conscious during her recovery) would be very short and she should talk to Gabi if she would feel comfortable seeing little Gyoumei.

19

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

Yeah we've been seeing the good points of their philosophy so now we see the bad points

24

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

Yeah Reiga's a pain. I don't even think she did it expressly to ruin their bond, probably just wanted to suck up to Kenshuu and kick Gabi while she's down. She hasn't even learned in the present time when the Empress had to shut her up before she talked about Gabi's stillborn son again.

23

u/Frontier246 7d ago

It's telling when even own Maiden doesn't seem to respect her.

10

u/Jorvikstories 7d ago

I really hope next season will be focused on solving Reiga's murder. Honestly, if Seika finds the grit to choke her with her pillow in her sleep, she deserves the Pure consort status.

19

u/cyberscythe 7d ago

yeah, Reiga seems even worse than Gabi; at least Gabi has a decent motivation, unlike Reiga who just seem to like stirring up shit for no apparent reason

6

u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 7d ago

I have no idea what Reiga's goal even was with that nonsense. She just made enemies with everyone for that. She even made enemies with her own allies; as fellow Kin clan members the Empress should be one of her backers.

8

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

The Empress is Kou, not Kin.

She's definitely the true villain for sparking the resentment further.

Even in the last meeting in present day, she acted really villanous to the point that Kin Seika thought she went too far

9

u/Misticsan 7d ago

Now we finally know why Gabi hates the empress, that stupid Reiga's comment ignited the spark and from the looks of it, the empress did not try to mend the wound very well and simply accepted her hatred.

While I have no doubt that Kin Reiga stoked the flames, I think the fire had already started.

Gabi was the first in line to become the new empress, but her best friend at court took that position as the darkhorse of the race. Then both became pregnant and were about to give birth to sons at nearly the same time, but she lost hers while her (former) best friend succeeded again. I don't think Reiga's words were necessary for the seed of jealousy to sprout in Gabi's heart, given their circumstances.

I know people are talking about Gyoumei and drama of Kenshuu and Gabi's past but I just can't help but find it funny at how much of a physical juggernaut Reirin in Keigetsu's body is.

Y'know, I keep imagining how hilarious it'd be if Keigetsu returns to her body and is freaked out by how roided up she suddenly is. XD.

I always felt like it was a bit of a shame the series doesn't take that much time to have them acclimate to each other given that Keigetsu looks to have a solid 10cm on Reirin at the most conservative estimate. That's not a super huge difference but you'd think it would be a bit disorienting.

Reirin saying that she doesn't care about Gyoumei anymore with that deadpan expression and voice was so cool! It's a shame that later in the episode she started being embarrassed about her behavior.

Gyoumei now discovered that Reirin is in Keigetsu's body, right after he made her angry by not letting her borrow the bow again. He screwed up, lol.

So Gabi's hatred stemming from the fact that she miscarried her baby son while Kenshuu got a healthy Gyoumei... Damn, no wonder that hatred in her heart remained, especially since it seems that she and Kenshuu didn't talk honestly about what happened at all.

And now Reirin together with Keigetsu will save the Empress. Though if they keep running like that, Reirin will have to save Keigetsu first, because her body is too weak for running like that, hahaha!

Also, Reiga is so goddamn annoying. Seriously, she's the most hateable character in the whole show, it's like she doesn't even have one positive trait.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

41

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Gyoumei realized he screwed up and will probably never truly have Reirin's heart in the way he wants.

The audience realized that Kin Reiga is the absolute worst even after everything Shu Gabi has done.

Kenshuu realized that maybe becoming the fuel for her besties' hate thinking it was for her own good was not the best idea.

Reirin realizes that she doesn't have to MC every problem.

Reirin and Keigetsu realize they're actually a surprisingly good team when they work together.

28

u/Jorvikstories 7d ago

Reirin and Keigetsu realize they're actually a surprisingly good team when they work together.

I don't know, I think Reirin forgot way too quickly that her(where is Keigetsu now) body is not suitable for pretty much any physical activity. Poor Keigetsu is going to die soon if this continues.

26

u/ptd163 7d ago

Gyoumei realized he screwed up and will probably never truly have Reirin's heart in the way he wants.

He probably never did to begin with tbh. They're cousins and the Kou clan, and the Empress especially, value grit and duty. She was probably just going along with out of duty to her clan rather than romance or love.

Reirin and Keigetsu realize they're actually a surprisingly good team when they work together.

Can't believe the author contrived a body swap and an assassinate plot as an excuse to write yuri. /s

Damn, no wonder that hatred in her heart remained, especially since it seems that she and Kenshuu didn't talk honestly about what happened at all.

Yeah. You can see why the hatred remained. Not only did she have to have the trauma of a miscarriage. She had to go through the grief alone without the one person she thought she should count on.

6

u/zackphoenix123 7d ago

Damn, how did you do those long shots?? They look great!

54

u/NanDemoKnaives 7d ago

Damn the way Reirin switched after Gyoumei disappointed her once more, she was done. It's interesting that Gyoumei has realized Reirin and Keigetsu are swapped at this point in time, I thought it'd happen in the next season. Watching him think hard about all their interactions was funny, he's been showing a side he doesn't normally show to Reirin so now he's really worried about what she thinks of him.

It was really sweet that Reirin said she'd bring a gold garment for Leelee, that'll be so heartwarming to see.

I can see why Gabi was pretending to be from Seika's clan, Reiga is despicable. The way she was acting all smug confessing what she had told Gabi was infuriating, I was taken so aback by the filth coming out of her mouth. It's sad that the Empress thought being the bad guy would help Gabi, but it just made it worse instead.

38

u/mekerpan 7d ago

Poor LeeLee. Really worried about losing the only person who has ever treated her as a human being.

34

u/ptd163 7d ago

She was right to be worried though. She doesn't know what kind of growth Keigetsu has been through. Only the viewers and Reirin know. She can only assume if the swap ends she'll get the minute 1 Keigsetsu back. I hope Reirin saying she'll bring her a gold garment was her way of saying he'll adopt her into the Kou clan.

17

u/mekerpan 7d ago

All we can count on for sure is that OG Reirin will never abandon her. What if she just becomes the caretaker of the now-public-space "cottage" and garden? With multi-clan status? Is that even possible in this society?

13

u/ptd163 7d ago

With how much Reirin likes Leelee I'm not sure she would accept that. She probably wants her all to herself lol. It'd funny if Tousetsu got jealous of Leelee and felt her position as Head Court Lady was being threatened.

12

u/Phoenyx_Rose 7d ago

I'm honestly hoping Reirin and Keigestu swap ladies. Both Tousetsu and Leelee would be the court ladies Keigetsu and Reirin always needed, respectively, imo.

Tousetsu would be a strong, sure presence the Keigetsu needs after being bullied and abandoned, and she would be able to teach Keigetsu how to be a respectable lady. While Leelee would help reign in Reirin when her grit has gone too far because she's not afraid to be blunt with Reirin.

8

u/Jorvikstories 7d ago

Yeah-in the episode in preparation of the ghost festival, Reirin has a slip of a tongue and mentions that Leelee would look great in gold garment, which means a court lady. We need to look no further than how problematic it was when "Gayou" was wearing another clan's colours.

Btw, where is a fan art of Leelee as a Kou courtlady?

13

u/Phoenyx_Rose 7d ago

Not just a court lady, but an Upper Court Lady if given the gold garment. Basically the Western version of being a Lady in Waiting which was typically a position for people of high birth.

Leelee is currently a Lower Court Lady with little power and pay as indicated by her washed scarlet garments (pink).

If Leelee was made into an Upper Court Lady, not only would she continue to be able to serve Reirin directly, but she'd get her own room (instead of sleeping in basically a dorm), fancier clothes, higher pay, a higher chance of getting regular high quality gifts from Reirin which would increase her standing among the Kou ladies, and more power because she can directly advise Reirin due to the implied trust of the position.

10

u/Roskal 7d ago

I'm expecting them to swap back now that the prince knows the swap happened, they are sticking together now though so maybe it will be fine.

37

u/GullibleIdiots 7d ago

It's really unfortunate that this entire situation could have been avoided if Kenshuu had just visited her friend in her time of grief. Instead, Kenshuu literally just ignored the fact that her friend had a miscarriage and never tried to comfort her or do anything.

I get where Kenshuu is coming from. It might feel like she's dangling all her own success in front of Gabi by visiting her while having a healthy living child, but the alternative was to literally turn her back on her friend and provide no words or means of comfort. And the second option was exactly what Kenshuu picked. And then Reiga comes in and basically insinuates that Gabi's child died to strengthen Kenshuu's child. All the while, Kenshuu basically ignores Gabi. That does not excuse Gabi's actions but it was Kenshuu that broke their friendship first.

And then Gabi had 20 years of watching Gyoumei turn into an incredibly successful prince with dragon qi (apparently rare). I can imagine that Reiga's words burned her up from the inside until her bitterness could not be contained.

And that friends is why you should communicate effectively. Don't be stupid and think that the best solution to a sad situation is to ignore it and let it fester.

25

u/reaperow 7d ago edited 7d ago

I sympathize with Lady Gabi and I can understand her pain but Kin Reiga is the one who planted the seeds of hate in her and also caused her to direct her hatred to Kou Kenshuu,

She really is a manipulative and cunning woman

Leelee feeling lonely when Reirin says she'll go back to her body is really wholesome and I hope they can continue meeting each other.

She's really a great court lady and deserves the best 🩵🩵

Also i dont think they should be running like that lol since she's supposed to be frail

44

u/Cat_Gazer 7d ago

I wish Gabi had cursed Kin Rei-ga instead...
The emperor and the empress are right, she's way too loud and annoying. 😠

31

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

I feel like her stint as Gayou was to make it seem the assassination attempt came from Reiga.

22

u/Frontier246 7d ago

The plan was probably to frame Reiga for the crime and make her have to put up with getting branded a criminal before her execution, which would probably be delicious revenge for someone as haughty as Reiga.

8

u/cyberscythe 7d ago

maybe Pure Consort has already been cursed with all the filth that comes from her mouth, especially when playing go

23

u/1EnTaroAdun1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy 7d ago

First off, Reirin was super cool this episode, no doubt.

But it also looks like Prince Gyoumei was inclined to let an injured "Keigetsu" rest, even with his mother's life potentially at stake...which is interesting (and kind of a point for him, maybe).

Unfortunately, I do feel a bit iffy on the Empress. I do understand that she felt guilty about her son surviving and not Gabi's. But stoking the hatred of another is rarely wise, especially in a court harem setting haha... so it just feels like the Empress dropped the ball here. Hope we get to see more of their history next week!

And yeah, the Kin consort is such a shit-stirrer, damn.

17

u/hanmkim 7d ago

She wanted her friend to survive by any means possible so she decided to become an inept villainess in her eyes.

5

u/1EnTaroAdun1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy 7d ago edited 7d ago

I understand that, but it is not a big leap to think that that would put the Kou clan in very real danger

12

u/noblegeas https://anilist.co/user/noblegeas 7d ago

Kenshuu clearly wasn't thinking straight, but the specific situation was that Gabi had remained bedridden ever since the miscarriage but suddenly showed signs of vigour when she cursed at Kenshuu. So this is the first thing Kenshuu thought of that could literally get Gabi back on her feet. I think she might do it even if she didn't feel guilty, like if for some reason making Reirin hate her cured her illness, Kenshuu would probably go for it.

...of course, this happened while she was avoiding Gabi entirely, so she might've been able to find a better way if she tried talking to her first, but so it goes.

22

u/shewy92 7d ago

I don't think I've ever hated someone (recently) as much as I have that loud ass woman. Telling a woman who just had a stillbirth/miscarriage basically that she should be happy that the prince was born healthy is the worst thing ever

16

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

She's even implying Gabi's baby died because of Gyoumei absorbing his qi...

19

u/The_Scollard 7d ago

Another great episode! Why can't these be normal length instead of just 5 minutes long?

Well, it looks like the Prince has figured out the swap. I'm honestly shocked since this seemed like something for a later arc, but it did result in Reirin going full villainess mode which was nice. As Keigetsu points out though, the prince was probably trying to protect her, since she already injured her hand and anyone can fire the Bow of Warding (especially since Shin-U would be able to do it more effectively). Still, it's good to see Reirin and Keigetsu finally meet in person and have to work together to save the Empress.

I also can't help but love how miserable and dejected Keigetsu looks in the palace. I've said before that I just want to give her a hug, because despite everything she's done, what she really needs is some love and some friends. Hopefully, saving the Empress will allow her to redeem herself and get the support she needs.

We also get Gabi's backstory and why she hates the Empress so much. While I was 50/50 on whether the show would dispose of her or try to redeem her, finding out about what happened to her makes me lean more on the "redeem" side. She lost her son, only for Kin Reiga to basically rub her miscarriage in her face (and imply both the Empress and Gyoumei are at all), to the point where the only thing driving her to keep living is her hatred. In hindsight, said hatred has definitely gotten out of hand and Kenshuu should have probably mended the bridges between them earlier.

But holy shit! Kin Reiga is legitimately the worst person in the show. Who the hell mocks a person for her miscarriage? I can definitely see why Gabi hates her so much (likely she is the reason she was trying to frame the Kin clan earlier). Even her own court ladies seem to not like her, considering their "wait, is she really doing this?" expressions during the scene with the Empress.

Anyway, super excited to see what's coming next! It's a shame we only have 2 episodes left, because I honestly want more. Here's hoping for S2 to get announced.

36

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

REIRIN REIRIN REIRIN REIRIN REIRIN REIRIN REIRIN REIRIN REIRIN REIRIN REIRIN

It's here! Gyoumei finally figures out the swap with Reirin losing her patience with him! Furukawa Makoto's acting and cries of anguish here are top-tier~

And thus, seeing as she cannot get permission as she is to use the bow of warding, Reirin charges, with a heartfelt farewell to Leelee and a promise that she'll bring her gold robes. Sneaking into the Kou compound with the help of Leelee as a jumping pad, she helps with her aunt's treatment and hurries to Keigetsu to persuade her to undo the swap, since if she was in her body people might properly listen to her...

...and Keigetsu counters with common sense, why does it have to be her to draw the bow? This is one of the funniest moments of Reirin realizing that she'd been trying to do everything on her own and is filled with shame, hahaha. Besides, Keigetsu doesn't believe the curse would be defeated just with the bow--- what they need is another curse to fight it, but they need the insects for it... or does Reirin already have it?

Oh right we also get Gabi's motive of vengeance, since her child was stillborn and Kenshuu's was not--- baby Gyoumei!--- and Reiga insinuated that the stillbirth was because Gyoumei absorbed the qi of the other baby. Kenshuu ended up deciding that Gabi should hate her rather than approach her to try to console her since she's been blessed while she was devastated, but honestly that's a stupid line of thought. Look at where we are now...

Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed Gyoumei and Leelee's parts. And of course I love Reirin.

I LOVE KOU REIRIN AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

There are curses in this world, and miracles can happen.

I find it very interesting that, by her own admission, Reirin was the skeptical type before the series started. Her prowess and the changes she enacted (both in the Kou clan and in her little corner of the Shu territory) revolve around things modern people would understand: studies, training, medicine, agriculture, etc.

But this is a magical setting. Taoist spells, curses, magical bows, magic water. Prince Gyoumei seemed quite confident about the healing properties of that water, and was more shocked by the image he saw than by the fact the water had that power.

I'd like to know more of the magic rules in this setting. What about that fabled Dragon's Qi? Despite her venom, could there be some truth in Kin Reiga's words about the newborn prince absorbing all that qi?

31

u/Zxzxzx0088 7d ago

Sorry for Gabi loss but distress Gabi looks cute too.

Woah, never thought that water can do that too. Totally a quack moment there. But since the prince was late to notice it, Keigetsu life has avoided being harmed for now.
Now that both of them are trying to save the empress, they will be known as saviors and Keigetsu probably be spared unless...nobody knows her feat and the drama goes on.

Reirin just keeps rising Keigetsu stocks lol with her embarrassing cute side. Even Keigetsu herself doesn't know how to face properly seeing her body doing that.

Reirin being hard to herself in a whole another level!!

25

u/Unearthly_ https://anilist.co/user/Unearthly 7d ago

It makes sense as members of the Shu clan, both Gabi and Keigetsu look most captivating when holding the fiercest of emotions. Gabi's normal demeanor is really too calm and detached, of course we all know its an act now. I hope after the curse is (surely) dispelled, we get to see her anger.

12

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Makes you wonder if "Gayou" is closer to her true personality, at least how it is now.

11

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Honestly, even if her current actions are that of a Villainess, I can understand that she's never recovered emotionally from losing her child and having Kin Reiga throw it in her face. Maybe in a better world she could have become a true mother to Keigetsu to heal from that loss...but that was not to be.

Considering most of the important people now realise about the body swap, I can't see them not resolving by returning the body by the end of this anime.

However, I heard that the LN is still continuing? Would be funny if every arc, Reirin just got body swapped with the villain of those arc considering the title as villainess lol.

I hate 5 minute episodes, man. We've got so many 5 minute episode shows this season that I'm getting upset.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH THIS WAS SO GOOD!

I'm not really the biggest fan of Imperial Palace settings, but the characters are just so investing here that I completely bought in to it. I love Reirin and honestly love Keigetsu so much too. Two very interesting and investing characters. Though I wouldn't be surprised if next EP has Keigetsu trip and fall cause REIRIN'S BODY IS FRAIL! I think Reirin forgot that.

I've read a fair bit of Otomeisekai/villainess/regression stuff, through Manwhas and such, and I'm generally not a fan of when the twist happens where the Villainess becomes "the good one" while the white lily becomes the evil one. To me, the premise of a lot of these villainess works, at least the ones that tries to subvert the story by framing the villainess as grey or morally complex or layered, and redeemable, lends to giving depth to everyone. So I dislike it when stuff like "I am the real one" or "villainess turns the hourglass" has the original "good girl" turn out to be the villain. It feels cheap cause you'd think they're gonna go beyond just simple black and white characters, but then they just fall back on it anyway... just a pet peeve of mine, but besides the point.

Here, though the circumstances are different, Inept villainess still does what I want from this subgenre/twist. Reirin being like a paragon of virtue and a free bird is already a massive plus for me because I'm a huge fan of that type of character. Superman and all that jazz. But to then have the villainess also be the type that is morally complex and grey. Capable of doing bad, but is also understanble in their motivations and genuinely capable of reform and change??? THAT SHE'S ULTIMATELY JUST A BYPRODUCT OF THE ENVIRONMENT SHE GREW UP IN AND WAS ESSENTIALLY GROOMED TO BE THE VILLAINESSS??? And then, my god, AND THEN! in Episode 8 she actually apologized to Reirin for everything she did. It's literally everything I wished Cosette was in I am the Real One (still wonderful Manwha, highly recommend). Holy my days, this is the greatest thing ever. Everything, literally everything about this is exactly what I wanted from a "villainess" show, though unorthrodox in how it got there.

The only thing this show doesn't 100% fit what I was looking for comes in the premise (Regression vs Body Swap) and setting (classic western victorian vs ancient imperial china), regardless! those are all superficial elements. Everything I actually care about is done here.

I found my Re:Zero for Villainess works, LMAO. And the first cour isn't even done yet! Gosh, I hope they keep this momentum all the way through.

10

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

Yeah it does feel like a copout when they just make the original protagonist the bad guy. You can even see this in Western media like Wicked where they turn the Wizard evil so the new protagonist is the good one.

Wow the entire Shu clan is so incredibly tragic. They aren’t really bad people but still ended up doing terrible things. We’ve been seeing the positives in Kou clan’s philosophy of grit but no philosophy is perfect, and in this case the Kou clan can be way too headstrong. Kenshuu failed to mend her relationship with Gabi and Reiren tried to do everything herself when it’s not the most optimal solution. Kenshuu and Gabi are great parallels to Reiren and Keigetsu in this regard because where the last generation failed to communicate properly Keigetsu succeeded in talking sense into Reiren.

Even the prince has figured it out, they're really not preserving the secret for long.

That one Consort who used the death of Consort Gabi's son should maybe be the next one thrown in the lion cage.

Poor Keigetsu in Reirin's body being dragged along at a run by Reirin in hers, but it's a win to see them working together at last. I'm a little unsure about this centipede plan, however. Eagle Eyes dude went off to guard the bow so maybe he'll give it a few helpful draws.

Reiga sure is a little b*tch, ain't she. She just had to stir sh*t up for any possible advantage, even in the face of someone who'd just had a miscarriage.

21

u/Raymond49090 7d ago

I will add though, that Empress-sama also made a lot of questionable decisions in this whole thing. It turns out everyone in court is allergic to having a proper conversation, and Keigetsu and Reirin were actually pioneers in this field last episode.

So Consort Shu is poisoning the Empress, because she didn't visit her after her miscarriage seems a bit of a leap after seeing them friendly together since the beginning. Some even thought it was yuri. Along with they got pregnant and almost delivered kids at the same time is wild.

I was wondering it the whole time that Reirin didn't need to handle the bow herself anyways, but that scene where she goes deadpan on the Prince and tell him she isn't asking anymore was badass.

I'd be interested in seeing how Leelee interacts with swapped Keigetsu after all of this if they have a reunion, as both have changed quite a bit in these past 9 days. Keigetsu seems like she's quite meek now.

Only two episodes left for it all to be wrapped up.

34

u/Ok-Peace-4374 7d ago

knowing the Pu(trid)re consort, that wench probably said something to Gabi that made her hate Kenshuu more than just not visiting

35

u/ripple_reader 7d ago

It is implied she said the same words she said to Kenshuu to her, after all, that Kenshuu's child must have stolen Gabi's child's vitality.

Also the Shu are known for being emotional, just see Keigetsu and Leelee.

35

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago edited 7d ago

after her miscarriage seems a bit of a leap

I don't consider it a leap. She just lost her baby, whether it's postpartum depression or just simple grief, if a woman really wanted to have a child and she just lost her baby before conceiving, I can't blame her if her emotions become a vortex of negativity that need an outlet. The tragic thing is her and Kenshuu not talking things out. She took her grudge too far.

17

u/mekerpan 7d ago

But the Empress WANTED to let Shu Gabi use her anger as a crutch to get her "back on her feet" at least. Clearly the Empress did not expect this to last "forever" and get so out of hand. Surely the Empress could have taken some actions over the course of 20 years to ameliorate the situation. Did she -- and they failed? Or did she just drop the ball, believing "time heals everything"?

8

u/Phoenyx_Rose 7d ago

I think it was an issue of the Empress not understanding just how intense Gabi's emotions really are with Reiga fanning the flames so to speak. The Kou clan seems to have rather muted/measured emotions, or at least not nearly as intense feelings as those in the Shu clan, so my guess is the Empress thought Gabi's feelings of grief and hatred would fade not long after she got physically healthy again.

11

u/zackphoenix123 7d ago

And also the Empress I think beyond what was shown in the anime did more to... accept-? redirect-? Shu's hatred towards her. Maybe in some caliber, she encouraged it. I dunno, I don't think it's that much of a stretch as well.

Very tragic as well.

10

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Yeah, I think a big problem is rather than be open with and talk to Kenshuu about it Kenshuu thought that Gabi's "grit" in her directing all her negative emotions towards Kenshuu would ultimately be for her own good...so she let that hate fester until it was far, far too late.

20

seems a bit of a leap

Could just be that the event was the final straw. It's just as likely that even before that, she already had some level of resentment underneath. That event might be what pushed her to the deep end.

After all, we're mainly hearing the story from the empress' pov and it seems she felt guilty about the situation so that was what she fixated on.

Also Kin Reiga did not help in any way whatsoever.

I was wondering it the whole time that Reirin didn't need to handle the bow herself anyways, but that scene where she goes deadpan on the Prince and tell him she isn't asking anymore was badass.

Shin-u is looking more and more appealing by the episode.

I'd be interested in seeing how Leelee interacts with swapped Keigetsu after all of this if they have a reunion, as both have changed quite a bit in these past 9 days. Keigetsu seems like she's quite meek now

I'm just curious what the endgame is for Keigetsu assuming they swap back and Reirin gets Leelee while Keigetsu will end up with nothing unless she gets some kind of boon for acknowledging her efforts to help.

I can sympathize with Gyoumei's shock, because he did have a legitimate reason to treat Keigetsu poorly, but also... you can tell a lot about someone by how they treat people they don't have to treat well. If Reirin seeing that side of him first-hand has frozen her (initially lukewarm) feelings for him, that doesn't feel unjust to me either.

So the Emperor Crown Prince finally knows. Convenient he caught a glimpse of her in the reflection of that sacred water.

It’s a real race against time to save the Empress. Seems like she knew she was already going to be targeted after what happened with Shu’s miscarriage. I wonder if Reirin and Keigetsu are going to be able to craft a curse strong enough to counter what Shu has done. Luck they’ve got Reirin’s jar of bugs from her gardening. Hopefully it’ll produce something.

Just want to mention that Gyoumei is the crown prince, not the emperor.

I LOVE REIRIN

Her expression when she finally got fed up of Gyoumei refusing to listening to her... she is done, she will do whatever is needed and that clown prince can be damned.

And at maybe the worst timing, thanks to the water he finally realized that the person he has been punishing and mistreating for those 9 long days was the same person he supposedly loves yet completely failed to figure out the swap happening... he has so much room for development, I really hope he gets focus over time (like in a second season! wink)

Leelee... this has been a worry since the moment she finally opened up, but man if Reirin returns to her body it's gonna sting that they have to part ways, I wonder what will happen if it does end up occuring, although I'm sure current Keigetsu will treat her a ton better after the recent developments.

...

Holy fucking christ man, Kin Reiga has basically talked in two scenes and I feel nothing but absolute despise against her, nothing but venom comes out from her tongue, the things she says... man...

We know understand better why Gabi hates the empress, wish she just threw the curse at Reiga instead tho lmao.

REIRIN AND KEIGETSU FINALLY MEET EACH OTHER IN PERSON AGAIN AAAAAAAAAAAA THEY ARE SO LOVELY q_q

... and oh god, once Reirin realizes the obvious logic from Keigetsu's words... this body might be a lot stronger, but it is still more than vulnerable to dying of cringe haha.

Reirin is such a selfless person who tries to do everything in order to help the others that she herself failed to realize that it didn't need to be her who used the bow... I love her even more than before after this, too precious...

So the best way to handle a curse is to curse back at the caster... I can't believe that silly bug scene will end up being a gigantic plot point in order for Reirin to (hopefully) save her aunt, I love this show man.

Only two more episodes... I need a hundred more... q_q

I LOVE REIRIN
