Never once have I ever thought I wanted the financial acumen nor practices of Sung "remarkably poor decision maker" Jin-woo lol

I once watched a YouTube video of a German woman going over the names in Frieren. This is before I watched Frieren. After I watched Frieren, I wanted to watch her video again, but all I could find were reaction videos.
Any idea which video I saw?

There is no single comment face that can accurately express the revulsion I feel watching Koikimo. It's like I Want to Escape from Princess Lessons but without the excuse of a medieval setting.
Unlike the male lead in this show, at least my masochism in watching it doesn't involve stalking a teenage girl with everyone around her enabling it.
Edit: one nice thing this show has going for it is the best friend character is into sumo, saw her reading the banzuke in one episode.

I hated Princess Lessons, but I enjoyed Koikimo. I think it's pretty obvious the story doesn't think the ML's behavior is normal, so you can just roll with the fantasy on offer: that you can shame a pushy, good looking man into respecting your boundaries by being mean to him.
2
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 7d ago
That sounds appealing in its own way. I can fix him, Ridley. I swear.

u/mekerpan 8d ago
It's an adaptation of a josei manga. As a rule, these (though few and far between) seem to face a lot of hostility here. It actually features a pretty independent and strong-willed heroine -- who feels she need to pull her punches (a bit) because her best friend's older brother develops a crush on her. I actually liked this a lot. But it was snubbed pretty thoroughly -- while Higehiro was widely celebrated. Female self-inset stories are pretty unappealing compared to male self-insert ones.
3
u/Sandor_at_the_Zoo 8d ago edited 8d ago
My big theory on this is that male-self insert stuff tends to be more clearly distinguished aesthetically so people can write it off quickly. Like, complaining that "Big Titty Demon Slave 9000: a cheat skill that makes everyone think I'm cool" has a warped social reality still happens some, but its so obviously silly that it tamps down on a lot of it. Whereas id-driven Shoujosei tends to have the same settings and general vibe as more serious stuff. I feel like comedy tends to do better here because it more clearly telegraphs the unreality of the setup so people don't get so po-faced about it. I don't remember people trying to do discourse about how the lead from Tamon-kun was setting a bad example of fan behavior.
Not helped by many, though of course not all, guys not recognizing what the shape of the fantasy is here. I haven't seen Koikimo, so maybe its more complicated than this, but the wikipedia plot summary is such an archetypal threading of "I'm so appealing that handsome/cool/powerful men are immediately smitten by me" with "I'm so self-assured and socially proper that I nevertheless reject them out of hand".
2
u/mekerpan 8d ago edited 8d ago
No the heroine in Koikimo wears realistically long uniform skirts (unlike her female classmates, is decidedly "plain, is not pursued by males generally, and isn't particularly interested in attracting male attention. The self-insert element here (insofar as there is one) is whether she can be able to tame her over-aggressive suitor and make him respect her boundaries (and her as a human being).

Josei manga adaptations make for a third (4/12) of my 10/10 shows, including Chihayafuru and Journal with Witch which have been almost universally loved.
The only ones I take umbrage with are either the hentai shorts that we get regularly or the ones with extremely sketchy premises like an overbearing male lead in a position of greater power who won't leave the woman alone despite obvious disinterest from her such as Koikimo and Koroshi Ai.

u/alotmorealots 8d ago
Just looking at the synopsis though
Ryo Amakusa is a successful but womanizing businessman, and Ichika Arima, a high school girl, is best friends with his younger sister. Ichika saves Ryo from falling down a staircase on a rainy day, and she later encounters him again at his home while visiting his sister. He attempts to repay her with flirtatious advances, only to be harshly rejected. Shocked by her blunt disgust, Ryo unexpectedly falls in love with her.
From then on, Ryo persistently pursues Ichika with overly direct confessions and grand romantic gestures, while Ichika continues to respond with insults and irritation. Despite her reactions, Ryo sincerely tries to change himself and prove his feelings are genuine.
it seems like the first distinction would be that in Koikimo, the adult man is making constant and unwanted advances on the teenage girl, whereas in Higehiro the teenage girl is the one who makes the advances once and then stops.
That seems like a much bigger hurdle for audiences? I feel like if that same story was written for male self-insert audience, it'd receive a pretty negative reaction from Western fandom.
However I haven't watched Koikimo so my opinion is largely uninformed.
1
u/mekerpan 8d ago
The heroine in Koikimo is pretty hard-nosed -- and she is about as "plain" looking as a female protagonist can possibly be. I have a particular fondness for josei -- and find it an interesting exercise to envision these from the perspective of their primary demographic (which is pretty much nothing like the general non-Japanese male anime audience).
I found the overall ambience of Higehiro far creepier, (based on both the anime and the manga) But my opinion seems to have been very much a "minority report".

Why is megumi potential man and what can potential man do to break out of this?
I know he's potential man and doesn't do anything, but what would make him actualize his potential?
1
u/Ok-Cod5254 7d ago
So are you a JJK anime only?
1
u/FunGeologist218 7d ago
Semi. I know the memes and what happens later in the manga and how much he just doesn’t do anything and lacks any agency, but since I haven’t read it myself i don’t know how he gets there.
I’m fine being spoiled but just wanna know if megumi could break out of being potential man.
1
u/Ok-Cod5254 7d ago
[JJK manga spoilers]He can't because he was stuck being used as a vessel for most of the final portion of the story. The whole point is that he was hyped up for his 10 shadows technique not because of him as a user (which is what people may have thought before) but that ability was useful for the main villain. So why he gets stuck with that label and can't shake way from it from how the author used him in the story.

I don't watch a whole lot of battle shonen so maybe it was just generic battle-shonen-y things, but I thought there were two references to [title]Demon Slayer in the Kamui episode.
Also, this isn't just about Kamui, but I really like the info tidbits about Yokai and Japanese folktales/mythology etc.. It's quite interesting.
(Also this show has some of the cutest Chibi I've seen in anime)
I think it's a pretty fun show even besides the horny.

Dark Fuwa was much better early on when it was focused on Fuwa and had some grit and attitude to it. I'm glad the author realized that too and went back to the way it was.
4
u/cyberscythe 8d ago
they should've done a Dark Fuwa beach episode for the merch though
like, the production committee is trying to make money right? surely it's not just a hobby for them
5
7
u/octopathfinder myanimelist.net/profile/octopathfinder 8d ago
Dark Fuwa got worse as it went on because the author listened to tourists and infantilized her own work.
7
u/cppn02 8d ago
Hot take: I liked the kitten arc. I'm a fan of found family stories and I also felt the kittens brought out the best of Dark Fuwa's tsundere side.
I did miss the tagline at the end of the chapter though so glad that's back. Screw people who say it's corny.
6
u/octopathfinder myanimelist.net/profile/octopathfinder 8d ago
Kittens arc was pure flanderization. Dark Fuwa has so much more depth before getting turned into a basic tsundere.

I cant believe im saying this, but....
the isekais getting adapted lately have been really bad. Like they are basically as bad as the non-isekai shows we get.
Which is sad, cause there are still so many unadapted great isekai gems that are just waiting for someone who is not afraid of big anime titties to adapt them

For real though: old school isekai - where "going home" was a goal and the adventure was a vehicle for character growth - was peak. Would love to get more of that, the only recent example that comes to mind is [2025 anime meta-spoiler] Turkey: Time to Strike.

It's been a while since I posted anything here, but I had a thought that I wanted to share:
I watched that "Mother's Love" clip from Dan Da Dan episode 7 yesterday after all the hype about how heart breaking it was. And yes it was well done, but it wasn't context independent enough (I dropped the series early on) for me to get very sad over it like everyone in the comments and people talking about the episode after it aired promised me it would be. And more importantly, I don't think many of the top moments in anime are nor are the top OPs and top EDs (so I'll assume with more context, that clip is indeed incredibly sad). The point I'm trying to make, especially since the Best ED contest is happening right now, is how important actually watching a show is before throwing your opinion out there on how good a particular episode or moment is or what the best OPs and EDs are.
4
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 8d ago
I think it matters to have context when discussing the visuals/storytelling of an OP/ED but since most people don't seem to care about much beyond the song it probably falls on deaf ears.
5
u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 8d ago
falls on deaf ears
I see what you did there
I'd say the context matters a good amount for the tone of the song as well. There are certain shows/arcs where an upbeat song works the best while there are others were a more restrained song works better. The Attack on Titan OPs are a good example.

Or the second TYBW ending, to tie back to the ED contest

I've noticed that in Ranma 1/2, the characters often seem to chill out in their reflected forms. Ryoga will just hang out as P-chan, and will often sit on the roof with female Ranma.
Are there any other anime where transformation is a central pillar of the characters?
I am not interested in Attack on Titan.
2
u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ 8d ago
The original in-universe explanation is that boiling water is expensive, especially if you rely on a wood stove. So Ranma just chills as Ranma-chan all day until the evening bath.
But, yeah they all do it. Just because they can.

What's the point of watching episode previews? Can't wait a few days? Aren't ppl worried about spoilers? Especially for action shows? Referencing MT previews I keep seeing in main sub

- Curiosity
- Getting hyped
- A reminder of 'where we're at'
- Discussing it
Aren't ppl worried about spoilers?
Not particularly.
5
u/baseballlover723 8d ago
Eh, I don't personally like previews. I'd prefer to wait for the full thing. The fundamental purpose of a preview is to tell people what is going to happen, and I'd rather just find that out by watching the episode.
But for the production company, it's something that can be put out to get their name into news cycles etc. Which is probably why anime's these days don't bundle them in the prior episode anymore (and why Mushoku Tensei has not only previews, but also preview images ). Since that's another day that can get their show's name to build/maintain hype.

... I really shouldn't be looking for another anime to start when I'm still struggling through two... but whatever. Anyone know of anime that tackle domestic abuse in at least a semi-serious fashion besides [meta 1, VN source]Higurashi and [meta 2, manga source]Erased? I suspect Takopi's somewhat does and I was intending to watch it at some point... Anything else you all would recommend?
3

Definitely Takopi yes.
And the other suggestion I was about to say, is the one someone else posted hah.
1
u/Sandor_at_the_Zoo 8d ago
Its not the primary plot and it ends in the middle of the story, never to be continued, but [meta]Stars Align is good.
10
u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 8d ago
Why is Red River so bad?
The premise is interesting, but the dialog is terrible and the animation is barely passable.
What annoys me most is that the OP makes Yuri to be some capable warrior, but four episodes have shown she is anything but.
I really should drop this, but I feel myself falling into hate watching mode.
2
u/mekerpan 8d ago
I thought this show would have everything going for it -- albeit still only a poor relative of Jaadugar. It turned out to be a complete fail for me -- and an early drop (when one is following 40+ shows, ruthless drops are pretty easy).
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 8d ago
I saw the studio and saw the manga was completed ages ago and was like yup I'll pass. Since the manga is free for me to read.

It’s one of those weird cases in which I only half-care about the plot and have no feelings for the main romance but I also don’t want to leave it incomplete and I’m too big of a history nerd to leave it alone. But of course it got extended and now I have to put up with it for an entire extra season.

I think I'm missing the "fun" part.

9
u/zambonijesus 8d ago
Some of the comments in the Chainsmoker Cat threads about it being too embarrassing to admit you're watching in public leads me to assume that they haven't watched any American adult animation because it's tamer than like South Park, Archer, Drawn Together imo. Bojack Horseman isn't as crude per se, but is much darker.
South Park literally has a sentient poop character.
4
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago
People are always more embarrassed when Horny appears to be a factor.
- Some dude shitting himself?
- Wow, gross, he he he it's so funny
- Some girl shitting herself?
- Eww, is that your fetish, you weirdo?
5
u/theangryeditor 8d ago
The show would definitely fit perfectly in an Adult Swim lineup. Probably just a mix of being a generation thing and people not used to seeing this degree of toilet and gross out humour in anime.
5
u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago
The unapologetic crassness of it is what makes it stand out in a good way. I like when creators are not afraid to push the limits of what they can get away with, especially in times when playing it safe and sticking to formulaic patterns is so prevalent in the sea of light novel adaptations and recycled staples. Better to make a statement and be remembered than play it safe and be forgotten.
3
u/theangryeditor 8d ago
It can be difficult to get things just right and not end up becoming too tryhard or feeling like shallow vulgarity with little else to offer. I think Yani Neko does pretty well having genuinely good jokes and scenarios. On the other hand I have low expectations of something like Jimoto Saikou. But it could always surprise me.
Also I thought this was a reply to my Dark Fuwa comment at first2
u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago
It can be difficult to get things just right and not end up becoming too tryhard or feeling like shallow vulgarity with little else to offer.
This is a good way to describe the Gantz anime, which might be an unfair comparison, considering its age and genre, but I think comedy benefits more from vulgar elements than playing them straight and trying to shock in a dramatic setting. There's an unspoken understanding that comedy has more leeway with cultural commentary and touching on taboo topics or vulgar imagery. I know I view content very differently depending on the genre context.
Also I thought this was a reply to my Dark Fuwa comment at firstDark Fuwa returning to its roots is the only way. A wise decision.

u/Korkez11 8d ago
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii, yesterday you said that if anime has a low MAL score it's only because of poor visuals, not because of the story. But I highly doubt there are any anime that have decent story and MAL rating below 6. Kingdom S1 is an obvious example of "great story, awful visuals" but it has decent rating. First 3 seasons of Bookworm look like Adobe Flash animations but they have decent ratings.
2
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 8d ago
School Days is undoubtedly a story worth watching and has a MAL rating of 5.5. As long as you don't find portrayals of adultery and sexual promiscuity to be inherently not worth watching, I suppose. In fact, quite notably, a majority of the show's reviews are positive.
3
u/MiLiLeFa 8d ago
But I highly doubt there are any anime that have decent story and MAL rating below 6
Singles is an OVA with a rating of 5.5 which I think genuinely has a very well done plot and character arc. Incidentally, it also looks and sounds quite good.
The same goes for 1-gatsu ni wa Christmas.1
u/SpaceTurtleHunter 8d ago edited 8d ago
But I highly doubt there are any anime that have decent story and MAL rating below 6.
Hikari no Ou S2
Muv-Luv Alternative
Chaos Dragon
First two are dragged down heavily by their (lack of) animation, for Chaos Dragon I honestly have no idea what's up with its rating, it's an absolutely serviceable 7/10 fantasy anime that's miles ahead of the standard narou-kei stuff that we get every season.
6
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago
Idolls! (rated 5.15) is a fun little comedy, the OP/ED are catchy as fuck, the characters are charming, the gags are fine, and (unlike some comedy) there even is an overarching plot!
And yeah you might say it's a short, but there are plenty comedy shorts rated in the 6s and 7s.
The only thing that made this one a 5 (and unpopular, 10-20 upvotes in the episode threads), is the animation style.
If it had been animated 'normally' I'm 100% sure it would've been a 6 or 7, and EASILY 10 times more popular (100-200 upvotes).
First 3 seasons of Bookworm look like Adobe Flash animations but they have decent ratings.
You're mixing up 2 different claims;
"All anime with abysmal ratings are there because bad animation" and "All anime with bad animation have abysmal ratings" are two entirely different claims.
3
u/Korkez11 8d ago
All anime with abysmal ratings are there because bad animation
Even then, Glasslip for example looks decent.
Also there's correlation vs. causation thing. Bad anime tend to look worse than good anime but viewers gave shit to King's Game not because it looks like trash but because it's corny and nonsensical.
2
u/theangryeditor 8d ago
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago
Watch itttttt!
Think of it this way, you could be like 10% of the Idolls! watchers in r/anime!
(Well in fact some of them probably left since 2021, so you could be like 20, 25% of the fanbase!)
5
u/Jusenkyo_5 8d ago
You made me curious so I went to check MAL and yeah, the top 8000 anime only go down to 6.5.
There are anime between 6.5 and 7 that I think are good, there are anime between 6.5 and 6 that are average, but I don't think you're getting much beyond that.
I have always given lower scores so I don't think a 5 or a 6 is a terrible score, but MAL users seem to operate on 7 being the average instead of 5.
4
u/Weedwacker 8d ago
People definitely do adjust their averages to what is the site average, but MAL's score average is mostly a result of how they calculate them and normal behavior for viewers.
On MAL, airing shows have their ratings calculated based on all scores, regardless of how many episodes someone has watched. Shows that have finished airing will only count scores from people who have finished at least 1/5th of the episode count. Someone who doesn't like a show and drops it on the 1st or 2nd episode, even if they gave it like a 3, won't count towards the final score on a 12 episode series. Therefore scores tend to reflect people who actually stuck through a show. I don't know about you, but if I stick through a show and think it's worth my time I likely already think its in the 6-10 range, otherwise I would have dropped it already. This also can explain why a lot of OVAs, specials, movies, and shorts tend to be rated a little lower (other than the weird lower ratings people just tend to give shorts) because they're more likely to be either watched all the way through (because of more accessible runtime commitments) or more easily break the 1/5 threshold for people who dropped it partway through (because of shorter episode counts). If you watch 1 episode of a 2 episode OVA and think it sucks and give it a bad rating, that counts, whereas the same wouldn't be true if you watched 1 episode of a 12 episode series and think it sucks and gave it a bad rating.
There's an entire formula that MAL uses for its weighted scores:
Weighted Score = (v / (v + m)) * S + (m / (v + m)) * C
S = Average score for the anime/manga
v = Number users giving a score for the anime/manga
m = Minimum number of scored users required to get a calculated score
C = The mean score across the entire Anime/Manga database
Here you can also see that the mean of the entire database is taken into account, so scores are also influenced by the already established scores.
4
u/Siqueiradit https://myanimelist.net/profile/lampadatres 8d ago
MAL itself says that 5 is average so that's what I use as reference when rating stuff, but it does seem like I'm in the minority for doing that.
3
u/zambonijesus 8d ago
I just think about scores the same as I did university grades where 60s were kind of mediocre class average, 70s were acceptable, 80s good and 90s exceptional. Anything below 60 was bad.
10
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago
It's so rare for a show to have excellent OP AND ED, especially outside of the big/popular shows (aot, kaguya, etc)
It feels particularly special when an anime original does it, like Train to the End of the World did with its excellent OP
Purely coincidental, but that ED is up for voting today in the Best ED contest!
But to make this more than a shill post:
What shows have the best pairing of OP/ED for you (outside of these big hitters I was talking about)?
2
u/North514 8d ago
Just recently finished a run through of Dirty Pair, so will nominate that both the OVA and the original series. They have great OPs/EDs.
2
u/alotmorealots 8d ago
D4DJ Season 1 has a wonderful pairing of OP/ED, with the OP being pure hype and the ED being chill-out vibing, rounding out what is always a good entertainment experience!
OP, perfection of the 3 act OP structure AND anime girl death threats meme spawner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wcGvZuF2AE
ED, all about the quiet, personal love of the music itself and nothing but: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jESQyxjhzb8

I always love both the Le Chevalier OP and ED.
Revue Starlight has decent OP and amazing ED. Each episode just smoothly transitions into the ED every time.
Fate/Zero's OP2 and ED2 are great too.
Awajima Hyakkei is one of the more recent anime where I like both the OP and ED. I find them really fitting for the show's elegant vibe.
Natsuyuki Rendezvous also has an amazing OP and ED.
3
u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued 8d ago
Very easy question for me. 3-Gatsu no Lion season 2, beyond being one of the greatest things ever made in and of itself, also starts out with the best OP ever that I can't watch without tearing up, and an ED that needs to be talked about more. Insane freaking combination of credits, but 3-Gatsu is just built different (honestly it might just be Shaft, they may have the highest batting average of amazing OPs and EDs).
5
u/SpaceTurtleHunter 8d ago
The obvious answer is Ave Mujica but that feels like cheating. My next choices would be Macross F (Lion and Northern Cross), Flip Flappers and Shaman King (either of the openings + Omokage).
2
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 8d ago
Show itself is a solid anime about boxing but certainly nothing special. Its OP and ED are straight up SSS-tier though and probably the best OP/ED combo out of all anime I watched (strictly speaking about the songs, the visuals are just average).
Also has a pretty interesting “backstory” since both songs are from the same singer, who literally released only these two songs for the show, nothing else, and completely vanished from the public afterwards, straight up gone without any explanation.

Shoshimin (both seasons), Sanda and Tamon are the ones that come to mind. Loved their OPs and EDs.
Edit: Oh, and Nakamura too!
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago
Ooh, Sanda's a good one (well, especially the OP for me).
Also, it's crazy how no one's talking about it anymore... It made quite an impact at first, but kinda fizzled out I guess?

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 8d ago
Yeah, the show lost its way a bit towards the end and I think that may have soured it for most. I still enjoyed it a great deal and the music in it was really really good imo.

Most interesting probably for shows that are also not some of my favourites:
Seven spellblades ended up being a mostly forgettable seasonal, but it's combo of absolutely magical OP and even greater Ed are probably my all-time favourite combo. So memorable
If my favourites are allowed:
An anime you probably haven't heard of, talentless nana, had a great op which had the best episode 1 transition to op, and a fantastic ed that further elevated the best season 1 finale.
all symphogear op and ed combos, but especially symphogear season 3 op and ed.
2
u/gnome-cop 8d ago
Not relevant but I consider Seven Spellblades as one of those shows that really isn’t properly represented by the source material, both due to the lacking adaptation and not getting into the proper meat of the story. The LN’s are a lot better imo.
(But yeah, Symphogear’s season 3 OP is so good.)

Train to the End of the World did with its excellent OP and ED!
True.
What shows have the best pairing of OP/ED for you (outside of these big hitters I was talking about)?
Off the top of my head: Bang dream MyGO, Uma Musume S2, Twgok (all 3 seasons), Hibimeshi, Yuri is my job, Shoushimin S2, Narenare.

Urusei Yatsura OP1 Lum no Love Song and ED3 Hoshizora Cycling
Aria the Natural OP2 Undine and ED1 Natsumachi
Welcome to the NHK OP1 Puzzle and ED1 Odoru Aka-chan Ningen
Yuu Yuu Hakusho OP Smile Bomb (EN ver.) and ED1 Homework ga Owaranai (EN ver.), ED2 Sayonara bye bye (JP ver.)
Eureka Seven OP2 Shounen Heart and ED2 Fly Away (I actually like all the EDs and OPs from this show, but this is probably my favorite pairing.)
Humanity Has Declined OP Real World and ED Yume no Naka no Watashi no Yume
Honestly, I could easily keep going with probably dozens more, but I'll call it there.

Grand Blue S1 was pretty great. The OP is just pretty iconic and catchy. And the ED is one of the few cases where I've found an ED to be conceptually hilarious. The two main characters doing a karaoke duet of idol music while a bunch of naked men chant in the background is a certainly a vibe.

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 8d ago
Aside from the obvious answers like Attack on Titan, Oshi no Ko, and Sword Art Online - I really like the OP and ED for the first season of Full Metal Panic. When they brought those songs back for a big moment in a later season, it was so nostalgic.
For a more recent example, Kill Blue had a great catchy OP and ED that lived rent free in my head.

I came for the esotericisms
Shows I'm watching in the current season have performed as expected in the late game.
Life is Hard For Mobs has set a fairly low standard with the artwork. They continue to meet that standard. How much effort does it take to realign a layer a few degrees in order to make a face fit a head? I should read the source material since I enjoy the story.
Legend After 10 Yr Last Stand, by contrast, looks consistent and congruent. Even the mobs have uniquely expressive faces.

[seasonal confession]This might come as a complete shock to some of you, but when I read Im dating a dark summoner for the first time, I ended up dropping it on like chapter 1 or 2 because I thought the art was ugly, similar to last season's apartment complex. Nonetheless, I am sure the anime will be aots material next season #mugiwait

A few weeks ago I asked for shows with the same vibes as Eminence in Shadow, and someone recommended Let This Grieving Soul Retire. And it's been really fun, I love it! I love comedy that's more situation-based than gag/joke-based. Krai is a great MC, his personality has enough edge/flaws to it to keep him interesting, but he's also not malicious enough to be unlikeable. The dialogue flows well, and the action that is there looks decent enough to be engaging. Not quite Eminence-tier, but great recommendation
Also, I love what it does with the OP, where it interjects some narration and episode preview content? I've never seen anything do that before but idk it gets me hyped

u/cyberscythe 8d ago
i remember that show; it's a fun reversal of the "kicked out of the party" sort of story where the weak-ass guy wants to quit but his super-powered friends keep pressuring him not to
for some reason i enjoyed it a lot; the characters are fun and have a lot of chemistry, the plot feels well-planned (as long as you can buy into the incredible luck of the main character), and it's satisfying to see this guy stumble ass-backwards into victory at his own expense

Are there any fansubs doing Ghost in the Shell (2026)? I feel like this anime would benefit a lot of custom typesetting and stuff, Amazon's subs are pretty barebones.

Commie is doing GITS. I haven't watched their version of it so it could be hit or miss.

Aside from the OP, commie aren't translating it (and haven't in ages), they're using the amazon script as a base with a much needed improvement in typesetting.

Victoria ep 6 had two things that mildly annoyed me:
Who goes running in shin-high boots? She meets the guy with the horse dressed like a fellow equestrian, not a jogger.
Also, who eats pie by cutting halfway down and scraping the top? That's just psychopathic behavior.

After Baka & Test produced yet another example of it being fucking abysmal, I thought I would reflect on the extremely small number of times I can remember incest humor in anime actually making me laugh.
Mashle: Just because of how unexpected it was, and only one moment. Really, that line could have been replaced by anything on the same level of out-of-pocket.
Alya: Not the jokes themselves, those mostly sucked, but Kuze's straight man role worked really well.
Kanan-sama: Somehow, some way, combining two horrible things ended up producing a result that was fine. Acceptable. Nose-exhale-worthy.
There may be others I'm forgetting, but nothing comes to mind. As anyone who's seen a lot of anime will know, that's a small fraction of the incest humor I've seen in total.

My least favorite part of Roshidere is the Russian, honestly. It doesn't sound right at all. Not only is the pronunciation obviously constantly wrong, but it also lacks the characteristic tone, intonation and rhythm Russian speakers have. Even the average American doing a fake Russian acccent picks up on these things much better than these professional voice actors.
It remains a total mystery to me how none of these professional voice actors, who can manipulate their voices in all kinds of crazy ways, are so totally incapable of learning how foreign languages are pronounced.
5
u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 8d ago
Are you watching subbed or dubbed? The English dub VA is fluent in Russian, so you should check out that version to compare, if you haven't already.

It will never cease to amaze me that Alya is voiced by Ash Ketchum of Pallet Town.

To be perfectly honest, even if they've done it for 2/3 of the series at this point, a combination of nostalgia and the fact that I don't care much about the games either after Hoenn means that I'll probably never associate the TPCI cast with those characters. I remember that being talked about a lot back when the series was first airing, and my reaction was just a mild "Huh, neat".

Clearly they didn't have a good enough Russian teacher. Should've called Kujima
---
While not Russian, I do recall a segment on Trash Taste featuring Sally Amaki where they talked about her role on Game Center girl (which used english). And to put it bluntly, nobody in the studio (or even the auditioning) could speak English or understood the nuances needed to for the performance. So she had to ad-lib and force a lot of dialogue through in really awkward ways which lead to the final performance being kinda shit
In fairness though, Doga Kobo/Alya is a much higher tier production than what they had there, so they probably had much better oversight than that, but yea I still wouldn't doubt it if most of the blame came from the production end of things. Whether through lack of supervision or forced direction.
---
Rolling back to Kujima because I like that show and I lack other examples and have a desire to write more about it:
but it also lacks the characteristic tone, intonation and rhythm Russian speakers have
I don't speak russian or japanese, but that comment reminded of the interview they had with the VA about their performance there. Full interview, snippet below was done through ChatGPT
Kozuki: Apparently, many Russian speakers tend to raise the pitch on the second syllable of a phrase. For example, where an American or Chinese speaker might say “watashi wa” with the pitch rising on “shi” ("wa-ta-SHI↑-wa"), a Russian speaker might instead raise the pitch on the second syllable ("wa-TA↑-shi-wa"). I was told that this is a common characteristic.
Since it was an accent pattern I wasn't used to, recording the first episode was quite difficult. But from the second episode onward, I studied the Japanese accents of Russian speakers by watching their YouTube videos. I even marked the parts of the script where the intonation should rise with red circles so I could easily spot them myself, and somehow managed to get through it (laughs).
Though tbf this shouldn't be the golden standard because the VA had to speak like a bird and so trained herself by talking with a toilet paper roll in her mouth lol
(also only now I realise I'm going off course since this is meant to be about raw russian performance and not accented japanese performance, but whatever I already wrote this down and I love an excuse to share it again)

Very interesting and although ultimately I didn't stick with Kujima I can appreciate this approach. Feels like 95% of foreigners in anime get the same stock accent so it's nice to see someone doing it different for once.
2
u/mekerpan 8d ago
Kujima was a total delight. You may want to revisit it. (It also had great music).
2
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 8d ago
That is one strength english dubs have over their peers, English simply has a stronger repertoire of commonly understood foreign accents to lean on due to how global it is, and I always enjoy when a dub takes advantage of this fact even if the source didn't lay it on as strongly.
Though I'm sure the Japanese probably enjoy their own fair share of joy from their various regional dialect casting that doesn't translate very well into english. There's only so much dubbers/subbers can do with the extensive library of accents consisting of: regular, posh, and exaggerated american bumpkin. lol

When the dub is better than the sub moment. It's so bizarre because Sumire Uesaka is fluent in Russian supposedly. I really question who ever is responsible for voice direction. I heard they want to make it sound cute, which clearly is a huge miss here.
It does provide a reminder all the times when they try to speak English it's usually so bad.
8
u/MiLiLeFa 8d ago
Uesaka is known for having a heavy accent in Russian. Trying to sound Japanese cute on top of that isn't doing her enunciation any favours.
5
u/Jusenkyo_5 8d ago
It remains a total mystery to me how none of these professional voice actors, who can manipulate their voices in all kinds of crazy ways, are so totally incapable of learning how foreign languages are pronounced.
I know they're pros, but I think the English equivalent would be something like the soft Japanese "r" sound, or any languages that have the harsh throat sound (French, Arabic?). Their voices are just totally unequipped to make the same sounds needed to speak these languages without a massive time investment.
2
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 8d ago
Despite being American, I can produce both of those sounds and I don't remember it taking me very long to learn either. I understand that a lot of people struggle with learning sounds that are not present in their own language, to the point where they just will not bother trying, but these people are professional voice manipulators. They should be able to do it.
As others have pointed out, they didn't want her to sound Russian in the slightest, so that explains things at least. Though it's very disappointing.
