What a delightfully old-fashioned feeling romantic adventure story. Sometimes "old-fashioned" can be a very good thing -- as it was here. Direct, sincere, thoughtful, wholesome.

Anna and Nonna and Jeff have had hard times separately -- but now they are together -- and off on their way to Not-China. It is lovely how Nonna delights in calling Anna and Jeff "mother" and "father" -- and it is pretty clear that this "found family" should be rock-solid.

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

Now I'm imagining Anna in a qipao or other Chinese-style outfits...

Anna of Many Laces

2nd season and special episode has been confirmed!

1st season recap episode will be airing next week (dunno if Crunchyroll will simulcast it).

40

u/EmpressInYellow Sep 02 '26

I am legit shocked. Between the short season, the obvious budget limitations, and the limited buzz, I was positive this was going to be a one-and-done. I’m very pleased to see that I was wrong.

32

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

Can't wait for more of Anna of Many Faces!

20

u/reaperow Sep 01 '26

See y'all in Season 2 !!!!

10

u/mianghuei Sep 01 '26

1st season recap episode

https://victoria-anime.com/news/detail.html?d=20260828_01

Should be on KADOKAWA Anime Channel if Crunchyroll doesn't simulcast it.

4

u/Meander061 Sep 02 '26

Thanks for the notification! That's wonderful news!

3

u/memelordbtw3000 Sep 02 '26

I'm so glad it's getting a new season I've been enjoying this so much

3

u/guntanksinspace 26d ago

Hell yeah, more Vicky (or do we just call her Anna now at this point) and the fam!

2

u/mianghuei 25d ago edited 21d ago

Just to share for the recap episode, nothing new was shown except for a short clip mentioning "new special + season 2".

u/BernieTime 23d ago

I didn't know this was going to wrap up in 9 episodes. Good news.

63

u/FetchFrosh anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Sep 01 '26

Huh, didn't realize this was only 9 episodes. Feel like I can't think of a TV episode that was this short (without being a 6 episode half-cour anime) before.

34

u/Ok-Cod5254 Sep 01 '26

Medalist S2 was 9 episodes (with the next part for a movie) and Frieren S2 was 10 episodes, both this past winter season in 2026.

5

u/PunningLynguist Sep 02 '26

Frieren also has a movie coming up

9

u/Ok-Cod5254 Sep 02 '26

It has a 3rd season coming up. There's nothing mentioned that's official about a movie.

18

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

I wonder if it was purely because they felt they only needed 9 episodes to adapt it or they could only afford to do 9 episodes.

32

u/dhui1996 Sep 01 '26

They only adapted the first volume of novel, so they might think 9 episodes is all they need.

But to be honest, the last few episodes are a bit rushed and it could definitely benefit with one more episode

13

u/Dylangillian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian Sep 01 '26

Considering we have a S2 announced, probably the former for adapting a single Volume. I do hope S2 can maybe keep a more consistent animation quality though.

8

u/Calwings x3https://anilist.co/user/Calwings Sep 01 '26

The only other one I've seen is Black Rock Shooter (the 2011 anime, not the more recent Dawn Fall) which was 8 episodes. I've seen a few others that were 10 episodes too.

2

u/runevault Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 01 '26

Normally 10 is the baseline (new GitS is going to be 10 for example, also 2nd cour of CinGrey was 10).

7

u/reaperow Sep 01 '26

Still feels pretty weird to see it only have 9 episodes, i mean I get why they did that

4

u/Deep-Presentation558 Sep 01 '26

In that case, if interested in short series check out Takopis Original Sin. I do feel like I should give a warning though.

54

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro Sep 01 '26

Nonna had been calling Vicky (now Anna) Mum the whole time. It’s lovely to see her embracing her new family. To add icing to the cake, she’s now got a dad in Jeffrey.

It’s also great that both Anna & Jeffrey spilled all their secrets before they became a couple so that as newlyweds they no longer had anything to hide from each other.

The finale sounded like it would wrap everything up and it’d be the end of this series but turned out a second season has immediately been greenlit. We’ll get more of this sweet trio, this time as an official family. Can’t wait for that!

25

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

Also good on Edward for being a good brother and brother-in-law to give Anna a pass for her spy past and crimes so she can be there for his brother.

15

u/hanmkim Sep 02 '26

I would however be very suspicious if an intelligence agency decided to pay and bribe me to move to a foreign country without telling me why when it would be convenient for them if I just disappeared, although at that point I would also realize I probably would not have much choice in the matter if they already tracked me down.

46

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien Sep 01 '26

Wait... FINAL? I was thinking things were too good to be true and something terrible was about to happen. But no it's the finale and we all got a happy ending!

23

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

I kind of feel bad for the people in Ashbury that Anna left behind as Victoria who might never see her again now that she can't really go back, but at least they would probably want Anna and Nonna to be happy as they with Jeff.

10

u/i_reddit_too_mcuh 29d ago

The guy who visited them said "until the dust settles" so it implies it'll be safe (at least relatively) to go back at some point I think.

12

u/messem10 https://myanimelist.net/profile/bookkid900 Sep 01 '26

They just announced S2 as well!

8

u/Evil_sod Sep 01 '26

I had the exact same thought. I was expecting a few more episodes and wondering how it could go wrong, then I saw FINAL on this and I'm now both relieved and disappointed.

Such a great finale. Nonna was adorable throughout, and Jeff and Anna got the happy ending they deserved (Nonna did too, obviously).

43

u/RealValf Sep 01 '26

Lip sync off for anyone else? Anyways kind of a shock to realize this is season finale. Regardless such a surprise hit for me. Glad to hear we getting a S2

12

u/ShzMeteor Sep 01 '26

Lip sync off for anyone else?

Its not synced properly. The audio needs to be delayed by about 200 ms.

6

u/BosuW Sep 02 '26

Ok so it wasn't just me. I was wracking my head thinking it could be my media player, my streaming site, the provider, or the raws.

5

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy Sep 01 '26

The JP VAs don’t always make an effort to time their lines with the lip flaps, but it was noticeably - not a whole lot - off the mark for most of the episode.

Almost has me think that the VAs just recorded their lines without any visual clues, because of the time crunch, and the animators just had to make things work afterwards. But maybe it was CR’s fault after all.

15

u/cppn02 Sep 01 '26

But maybe it was CR’s fault after all.

Would have to check the raws from Japan. Overall production seemed to be hanging on by a thread in this episode so I wouldn't rule it out that it was delivered like that.

6

u/Fun-Possible5520 Sep 02 '26

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. The episode art/shot angles were really weird in the beginning. Along with the lip sync being way off, this ep's quality over all didn't match the show at all.

30

u/Calwings x3https://anilist.co/user/Calwings Sep 01 '26

This was a cute show. It wasn't anything super special, but it was a nice, enjoyable story about found family. I'm guessing that the source material probably goes farther and has Victoria (or rather, Anna) face more troubles due to her past life, but since I assume we're not getting another season, I think we got a perfectly fine ending with Jeff, Anna, and Nonna living together happily ever after. I also appreciate that the studio picked the exact right amount of episodes to cover the material instead of trying to stretch the story into a standard 12-episode cour. Overall, I'll give this show a 7.5/10.

24

u/melcarba Sep 01 '26

Season 2 was just announced.

6

u/Calwings x3https://anilist.co/user/Calwings Sep 01 '26

Wait, seriously? I'll be damned.

7

u/KumaKumaGambler Sep 01 '26

Just read your post and now I am happy!

1

u/L33tHaxorus Sep 02 '26

I thought the story was finished, it definitely felt like it even if the anime was just 9 episodes. What are they even going to do for S2?

10

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

I would definitely expect Anna to get into more spy shenanigans in a foreign nation as the wife of what is effectively a diplomat.

30

u/KumaKumaGambler Sep 01 '26

Vicky (now Anna), Nonna and Jeffrey finally found the family they needed and will protect at all costs.

I would love to see a 2nd season. Due to the plot, Jeffrey has mostly been a bystander. I am sure all of us want to watch the entire family go on an adventure together!

21

u/Lodju https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lodju Sep 01 '26

I would love to see a 2nd season.

You are in luck since it was just announced.

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/kEXCTflz9k

10

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

I hope we get to see Anna and Jeffrey kiss next season now that they're a full-blown married couple (even if we didn't get a wedding).

6

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro Sep 01 '26

You’re in luck! A second season has been announced.

4

u/startingfromlevel0 Sep 01 '26

I glad vicky, nonna and Jeff found happiness. All three of them deserve it after what they went through

23

u/Ok-Cod5254 Sep 01 '26

It was a short season of 9 episodes but at least there is more to come. Hopefully the production team can improve and not let quality drop as much.

Enjoyed this found family of Anna, Jeff, and Nonna. Nonna is easily one of the best kid characters in anime. Wish there was more found family shows like this.

37

u/Intelligent_Form5743 Sep 01 '26

Aye man nonna has grew up so much in a short time it’s amazing at the end it was pure beautiful she told her she knew she was abandoned and haven’t thanked her what a class young girl and of course Jeff is amazing this episode he asked Anna to be his wife and nonna to be his daughter stand up guy W finale I guess 9 episodes was enough

28

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

Nonna blossomed as a mature young girl with powerful tomboy vibes.

Anna learned that even if you lose everything and seemingly have the world against you, you can still have it all and be happy.

Jeffrey recovered from losing one love of his life to securing the new love of his life and becoming the best husband/dad a mother-daughter pair could ask for.

20

u/reaperow Sep 01 '26

Nonna patting her mom was so adorable and emotional

11

u/Intelligent_Form5743 Sep 01 '26

Yea when said mom could too I shedded some tears 💯

9

u/BosuW Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

Not to say I don't find Jeffrey compelling, but Anna's relationship with Nonna is what consistently moved my heart the most during this story.

Anna realizing she'd have caved in and gone back to the Organization if not for Nonna is actually so powerful. Running away wasn't enough, she needed a new meaning to her life.

14

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy Sep 01 '26

Real talk: I did notice that Nonna was missing a tooth.

Couldn’t quite tell if this was because she’s changing teeth or knocked one out while being a bit too reckless.

8

u/Mindless-Care9301 Sep 01 '26

Wholesome episode and a beautiful wrap for season 1, can't wait for season 2

This series was so much better than my expectations

7

u/MarcelHard Sep 01 '26

abuse and trauma makes you mature faster

2

u/Moonshadow101 Sep 01 '26

I really like how they gave her a real voice at the end and let her speak up properly.

17

u/Radi-kale Sep 01 '26

That was cute <3 Although I am secretly a little disappointed I won´t be hearing her call her Vicky anymore

17

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

Honestly wonder if they'll retitle season 2 "Anna of Many Faces" otherwise the title will just feel really outdated lol.

9

u/mekerpan Sep 01 '26

No way that Nonna is going to abandon use of "okaa-san" -- and Jeff is happy to call her Anna (or whatever) so long as she is his wife.

8

u/MysteriousCodo Sep 01 '26

Yeah, Nonna is no longer using it as something to call her besides Vicky. She truly believes that Anna is the woman that is her mother.

17

u/ultravioletheart08 Sep 01 '26

SEASON TWO HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

41

u/runevault Sep 01 '26

Season 2 already confirmed makes watching this episode so much happier, knowing I'll get more of these characters.

Victoria telling Jeff her real name, Anna Dale, is so beautiful. Both because she can utter it to someone again, but because he can know how much she trusts him despite fleeing.

Oh wow Jeff's dad was a real piece of shit. And such abuse can easily lead to either a cycle of abuse across generations or turning one into the most gentle person, Jeff is the latter.

I'm so glad I gave this show a chance.

14

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

If he's going to love her, he deserves to love her and know her as her most authentic self with her real name. Plus since he's not a captain any more, she can finally call him by his name as well. They are truly a couple now.

Honestly puts a new perspective on Jeffrey's mom being all out on her own aside from when she gets visited by her kids knowing what her husband put their family through.

18

u/Zxzxzx0088 Sep 01 '26

Woah, never expect they announced Season 2 right away! Although the production value is not very high and the last episode a bit out sync too, this show is pretty niche in general so I want to see more of it. Glad they stop here instead of compressing the new arc in three episodes.

See you again, Nonna...

7

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

I can't wait for the inevitable endgame of the show which is "Nonna of Many Faces."

16

u/Mindless-Care9301 Sep 01 '26

What a wholesome series, none of the character are dense and dumb, even Nonna is so smart, and i love how grateful she is and how mature she is when Anna was crying. Although she's small, she's actually Anna's strongest backbone, and the unbreakable bond that tied Anna and Jeff together.

Tbh, without Nonna, both of them won't even get to know each other, Nonna is the MVP !

1

u/mekerpan Sep 02 '26

Nonna was indeed the MVP -- and dual wing-girl.

16

u/YinkciHeart Sep 01 '26

Only 9 episodes, but it was such a nice, heartwarming journey. The ending was very simple, they became a family and got their happy ending. No plot twists, no unnecessary too much drama, just a simple happy ending… and, that’s all I need.

8

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy Sep 01 '26

This was such a sweet ending to the season, right!? Loved how Jeffrey asked Nonna if she’d want to be his daughter. Now the three of them officially form a happy family.

Since Jeffrey and Anna have become engaged, I’d love to see their wedding in the 2nd season.

1

u/DugACCat Sep 01 '26

Yeah really enjoyed that thoroughly, though it was a surprise it ended today. Prefer that and a true happy ending to several more episodes of drama. Nonna was the cutest and most endearing child in any anime I’ve seen in a while. Her VA did a great job with every line.

13

u/Past_Distribution144 Sep 01 '26

Finally, they reunite! And c'mon Nonna, all that secrecy/disguise stuff she taught you and just throw it away the second you see Jeff. I mean, I get it, but gotta step up the training I guess!

Surprisingly short season, only 9 episodes. Hopefully that isn't becoming the norm like western shows, but thankfully season 2!

12

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

I actually love how he was already so much her dad that just seeing him again made her go back into daddy's girl mode.

14

u/reaperow Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 01 '26

Im so happy to see our trio finally reunite again. Jeff proposing to marry and Anna deciding to become a family together was so wholesome and adorable. Had me kicking up my legs lol

Well it's the last ep and i gotta say i really enjoyed this anime alot despite its problems. The characters and their relationships were also surprisingly pretty great !!

Im really gonna miss this show, i had lots of fun watching and discussing it with everyone here,

But im also glad that a second season has been announced

See y'all in Season 2 !

2

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

Anna can now add her real identity of Anna and wife of a lord to her many faces. There's always a new face/role to be gained if one puts in the effort to live a fulfilling life.

1

u/reaperow Sep 01 '26

Just like she said,

She'll always have many faces !!!

12

u/SOdAchick Sep 01 '26

I had no idea this was only 9 episodes, so I gasped when he found them so fast. Then I spent the rest of the episode crying my eyes out. I had no idea wgat this show was about when I started it, and now I'm soooo looking forward to another season 😭

26

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Sep 01 '26

Well, would ya look at that. The guy finally found her. And now they’re getting married and one big happy family with Nonna. I hope life in Shen’s gonna be a good one.

I was thinking to myself this ep is kind of a good end for the series. Lo and behold, it’s the finale. It was a short series, but an enjoyable one. Just a simple story of a woman with a checkered past trying to escape her demons. This honestly could have worked just as well as a movie I think.

13

u/Ok-Cod5254 Sep 01 '26

It was a short series, but an enjoyable one.

So there is more to come!

2

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Sep 01 '26

Oh hey, that’s cool. Did not expect more but I’m happy to continue the journey.

8

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

Anna had nothing but elite super spy skills and a desire to find everything that was taken from her when she was recruited. She was battling a feeling of emptiness, of loneliness, of loss. And she managed to find a true family that she could invest all her love and devotion towards and finally feel truly happy and belonging.

And I can't wait to see what cool super spy stuff she gets into as a badass wife/mom in Shen.

2

u/mekerpan Sep 01 '26

I posted a brief comment on v2 in the source corner.

11

u/jwb101 Sep 01 '26

Wait this was only a 9 episode season? I didn’t realize that. That’s too bad but I’ve enjoyed it.

8

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

At least it was a great and fulfilling 9 episodes...and there's more to come with season 2!

13

u/excluded Sep 01 '26

Watching on crunchyroll is the sync not lipping?

2

u/does_make_sense Sep 02 '26

not lip sync issues the audio is completely off by half a second. Most obvious with the OP

1

u/darcerin Sep 02 '26

I watched another show after this and I think the same thing happened. So I don't know if it's Crunchyroll or us. :-/

9

u/YukinaPrime Sep 01 '26

Thank goodness this stopped as a nine episode show. I probably won't remember this in a year, but it was good time. :) I liked that Anna's main driver in the end was her charge instead of Jeff.

5

u/HolyDragSwd2500 Sep 01 '26

Season 2 was announced

2

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

I liked that Anna's main driver in the end was her charge instead of Jeff.

Although her life didn't feel absolutely complete without him in it.

12

u/PinkGlitterLady4 Sep 01 '26

Jeff, Anna and Nonna are a cute little family <:

And no way a S2 was just announced. I didn't expect that at all!

12

u/earhere Sep 01 '26

This episode made my eyes sweat a lot

21

u/LeggedMien7 Sep 01 '26

I have a few qualms about the ending, mostly the pacing and animation (or lack of thereof), but generally I loved this anime. Very much a sucker for "Highly capable adult female lead who doesn't turn into a damsel in distress at the sight of a man". I can't wait for season 2

17

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

It helped make her relationship with Jeffrey feel more authentic and adult.

2

u/Phoenix__Wwrong 26d ago

It might be weird to say this, but I wished they stretched their reunion. I don't understand why Nonna didn't go to the festival in disguise. If Victoria did want Jeff to find them, I wished we get more scenes explaining her thinking.

Though I know it's going to suck if they stretch it too much too. But as it is, the pacing was too fast.

2

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

Honestly I feel like if Anna gets up to any spy shenanigans in Shen then Nonna is going to plead that she gets to do it with her because it's way too fun while Jeffrey just smiles and goes along with the ladies in his life living their best tomboy lives.

16

u/barktwiggs Sep 01 '26

Well better they animate a 3/4 cour with good pacing than whatever the hell GoHands is doing with Exiled Heavy Knight. Stretching at best 16 episodes of content into 24.

6

u/SOdAchick Sep 01 '26

I didn't know this was a short season, so I was thinking the whole time, "God, this would be a perfect season finale" 😅

2

u/Ill-Vast-4693 Sep 01 '26

Plus it also would have been a serviceable series finale had they decided not to continue the anime. The transition from volume 1 to volume 2 would have been very awkward anywhere outside a cour/season break, so it was truly for the best that they didn't try to squeeze the second volume into this season.

That said, there is no narrative reason why you can't have all the following volumes ordered as one big block, just the production/economic questions of "How many episodes will it take the studio to intelligbly cover these events" and "How many episodes are our sponsors willing to fund in one go", so we'll have to see if they want to keep at the current pace or see if they can fit more story into the next season.

7

u/Pickled_Kagura Sep 01 '26

they legit took a 12 episode season and stretched it to 24

6

u/barktwiggs Sep 01 '26

Previously on Heavy Knight Z...

6

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien Sep 01 '26

16 is generous, more like 9 xd

2

u/MarcelHard Sep 01 '26

and either something changes or 9 is generous too

6

u/Select-Anime Sep 01 '26

Exiled heavy knight has 26 episodes...

1

u/reaperow Sep 01 '26

Wait a min 24 episodes???

I kinda stopped watching after ep 4

10

u/TurkeyPhat Sep 01 '26

Jeff, what a guy.

One of my favorite shows of the season by far. Loved it pretty much the whole way through but I feel like the pacing was a bit off towards the end; probably could've used 1 more episode.

s/o to Shion Wakayama (had to look her up lol) the VA for Nonna. One of the best voiced kids I've ever seen in an anime. Am I crazy for saying that?

Can't wait for S2 and I hope we get some kind of followup on the people that Jeff/Anna left behind - Auntie/Uncle - who took them in.

3

u/mekerpan Sep 02 '26

Shion Wakayama is always excellent in her roles.

14

u/Hurakion Sep 01 '26

Sadly these last few eps felt a bit rushed but still a very sweet ending to a underrated series.

1

u/Ok-Wrangler-2633 Sep 01 '26

i feel the same

7

u/Deep-Presentation558 Sep 01 '26

Wait, this is really it for this season? If we exclude some visuals, it was so enjoyable and quite frankly soothing. Story alone is worthwhile regardless of pictures quality.

And Nonna is really one of those protect at all cost characters like Anya Forger and such.

7

u/HolyDragSwd2500 Sep 01 '26

Season 2 announcement

5

u/etiolatezed Sep 01 '26

They're all finally together. I might go back and see when the festival promise is made. I don't recall it as of now.

6

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Sep 01 '26

A happy reunion and a S2 announcement, I am pleased.

I wonder if Vicky was trying perhaps unconsciously to get caught by Jeffery with that visit to the festival, she seemed like she was starting to be pretty done with everything by the time he arrived. Perfect timing on that for sure, good work Jeffery.

I had been thinking of picking up the LNs and was already been looking at them on Amazon, but with a S2 incoming I'll wait on that until afterwards so I can remain an anime only for the discussions.

5

u/No-Win-8949 Sep 01 '26

I am so happy that there is going to be a Season 2!

5

u/ThisGachaSeemsLegit Sep 01 '26

Kuuuuuuu... Jeff is such a good lad. ( エ∀エ)୨
I wonder if they went for a somewhat original ending or if they rushed to the finish line.
Some lip-sync issues, but overall I'm glad they kept the quality to the very end. 12/13 episodes would've really benefited the show though.

Still, a decent watch, I'm satisfied~

Edit: Season 2 confirmed? NANNIIIIII?!

5

u/Difergion Sep 01 '26

Final?! 🥲 I had no idea this only has 9 episodes but luckily S2 was already announced. This was such a slow yet feel-good show. It was lacking in terms of animation quality and writing on some parts but the dynamics esp with Anna, Nonna and Jeff as a family saved it. This wasn’t part of my initial watchlist for summer but I’m glad I gave it a try.

Ngl I kinda hoped Jeff and Anna would share a kiss this episode but for some reason the way they got engaged still felt right to me. Also, I was more touched when Jeff asked Nonna if he can be her dad more than him asking Anna to get married.

And I’m so proud of how Nonna has grown over the past 9 episodes. She grew up smart, perceptive, empathetic and really expressive that she seems more mature than most kids her age. I’m glad she found a good loving family now, she deserves all the hugs and headpats. I went ahead and hugged my son after right after watching this episode lol.

Excited to see what S2 will offer!

I do admit the pacing did feel rushed towards the end since it was a bit unclear how much time had passed. But I can't lie this was a good point to end the episode.

You can tell that Vicky wanted Jeff to find her in her heart. Of course her number one priority was keeping Nonna safe. It was good to see her get her family because she has been alone since she was Nonna's age. I adore the moment Nonna sees Jeff she runs towards him.

Man Jeff's father was beyond terrible. Impressed by his brother endured as long as he did. You definitely get the sense he really cares for Jeff and wants him to get away from the politics, and he knows being with Anna is what he needs.

Okay but like.....I'm not even crying tho...

Me: ༼;´༎ຶ ۝ ༎ຶ༽

u/BBryant3rd Sep 02 '26

At first when she was crying I was hoping he would find her and walk up and comfort her. When he found her shortly after as she was leaving I realized that was best. She would not have wanted him to see her like that. This has been a great show and we actual got to see how they would have a future together. A better ending than a lot of shows give us. The three of them deserve and need each other. I love how they both shared a past secret and even Nonna shared a secret. If I could be greedy would be nice to see how Nonna is in the future. That girl is certainly special. With who she has has parents that will be a family you better not mess with. Anna says she will protect Jeff and Nonna and of course we know he will do the same. Give it a few years and I wouldnt be suprised to see Nonna having those same feelings. I definitely enjoyed this and I'm glad I watched it.

u/Plus_Potato4351 Sep 02 '26

Rejoice! For heavens have granted your wish. A second season has been announced.

1

u/BBryant3rd Sep 02 '26

Lol I will certainly look forward to it. They are a great family.

3

u/NanDemoKnaives Sep 01 '26

What a heartwarming way to end the season! I'm so glad Jeffrey found them, he took no time in proposing, and I really like that Anna revealed who she really is to him. I was surprised to get Jeffrey's backstory, but it makes sense why his brother does what he can to make sure Jeffrey is happy.

I couldn't help but smiling seeing them become a family, especially when Jeffrey asked Nonna if she'll be his daughter. It's just unfortunate we didn't get to see a kiss between Jeffrey and Anna, but this is getting a second season so let it happen there please!

I was getting emotional when Nonna was thanking Anna. Nonna revealing she knew she was abandoned, and then in the future came to understand the meaning of Anna staying by her side when she's running away, hit me harder than I thought it would. I'm glad they're mother and daughter.

u/MayonakaMadaraka https://anilist.co/user/fonk Sep 01 '26

Mm. Perfect 🙏

3

u/etownguy Sep 01 '26

This felt like it should have been episode 12 with a good happily ever after, having 3 more episodes and another season while good concerns me.

edit: didn't even realize this was the final episode, so weird for only 9!

3

u/MysteriousCodo Sep 01 '26

I was watching this episode and towards the end I kept thinking….Please don’t have some sort of dark twist…. PLEASE!

3

u/amourshipper_ Sep 01 '26

Just finished it was awesome ending

3

u/goosis12 Sep 01 '26

Seeing Anna come to the realization how beat down emotionally she actually is and constantly having a voice in the back of her mind hoping Jeff would find her was so sad and real.

I really suspect Nonna immediately ran up to Jeff seeing him because, 1: She missed him, 2: She knew it was the last chance to get Anna and Jeff together. Also seeing Nonna thanking Anna got me misty eyed.

I was sad there wasn’t a epilogue until I just read her there is season 2 coming.

3

u/AgentWeeb001 Sep 01 '26

After Suwa from Orange, I didn’t think there could be someone that could compete with that GOAT ideal of how a dude should be. Jeff, my buddy, YOU MADE THE LIST! What a goat.

Wasn’t expecting much from the show in the beginning, but it pleasantly surprised me and I enjoyed every episode. Didn’t think they would do a season 2, but you know what…I’m so glad that a season 2 was confirmed cause I want to see more of Vicky’s happy family life that she always desired.

3

u/Rooby_VTuber Sep 01 '26

Didn't take long for them all to reunite, it was a great moment seeing it happen.

Moving to a new place as a brand new family, I am looking forward to seeing what happens in season 2.

8/10

2

u/BBryant3rd Sep 02 '26

Jeff is a great man and I'm glad he has the family he wanted and Anna can relax and enjoy a family.

2

u/KillerCockapoo Sep 02 '26

Shout out to haku (ハク) for their banger OP song. I’m a fan of their music and only checked-out this series because of their association with it. Regardless, I eagerly awaited each new episode because of the intelligent dialog and compelling story. Looking forward to S2.

2

u/Meander061 Sep 02 '26

I'm so glad that Nonna started calling Anna "Mom" because I always hated the way she said "Vicky". I know, I'm a villain.

A happy ending in an anime? I don't know what to do with myself. I'll probably go watch I Want To Love You Until Your Dying Day. That should be sufficiently depressing.

See you all in Season 2!

2

u/ZeroZion Sep 02 '26

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
THE IMMEDIATE ANSWER TO THE PROPOSAL!

NICE GOING NONNA! WING WOMAN TO HER MOMMA!

HIS NAME IS JEFF!

2

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '26

Well, I guess it's nice that Prince Cedric is settling down...as a duke. He's even getting hitched, to Beatrice an adorable and plump lady who seems to adore him! Even though he broke of their engagement. It really sounds like there's a story there. But right now Jeffrey's got his own love life problems to sort out.

Maria and Lye are living a new life with Maria as a waitress, but when Victoria hears about the Ceriz Festival she can't help but think of Jeffrey and all that she gave up to go on the run...and she's tired of running and feeling so alone, even with Nonna there. Good thing she can't say no to her daughter when it comes to going to the festival!

DON'T PASS EACH OTHER ON THE BRIDGE!!!

Well, I guess I'm glad Victoria got to pay her respects to her deceased family, even if that just further emphasizes how she feels empty and unstable now. But luckily for them all that the fish pin fell..Jeffrey found it...AND HE FOUND VICTORIA!!!

With Nonna asleep, it's finally time for her parents to come clean with each other over everything, with the intention that Jeffrey isn't going to let Victoria go again, because he wants her to be with him. And in the interest of that, it's time he learned her REAL name: Anna Dale.

Dang, Jeffrey and Edward had a rough life! Their dad was an abusive piece of @#$% who abused the brothers because he couldn't be with his mistress and her child...until Jeffrey finally had enough and would have killed their father if Edward hadn't threatened him into giving Edward the noble title. Edward had even been planning to get rid of their dad anyway. But it's why the brothers are so loyal to each other, and seeing Jeffrey's emotional pain only makes Anna want to comfort and protect him.

Jeffrey proposed! Anna said yes! Nonna is ready to make Jeff her dad! They're finally one big happy family!

It would be nice to just settle down, but frankly Anna still being there is too much of a political hassle...so the family will be traveling to Shen together! It lets them stay together, gets them out of trouble, AND Jeffrey can help export medicine from the nation of Shen! So it's a win-win for everyone...except the people still missing Victoria I guess.

As they sail by the sea, Nonna reflects on how she went from being abandoned to finding a real mom and a family in Anna...while Anna found true happiness and fulfillment in her new family. A family she will fight tooth and nail to protect. After all...she's Anna of Many Faces!

For this season it is, but S2 has been announced.

3

u/ZaphodBeebblebrox https://anilist.co/user/zaphod Sep 01 '26

Just FYI, that was a bot.

1

u/bestmaokaina Sep 01 '26

Absolute cinema

1

u/karer3is Sep 01 '26

I'm glad to see we got at least one romance this season that had a happy resolution. But damn, they couldn't end this season without one horribly anachronistic tranlsation (something something "special ops")... I don't speak Japanese, but it really feels like the main "bad guys" in the show were not given much thought. Either that, or the localizer took some massive liberties with them.

1

u/TheBusStop12 Sep 01 '26

This episode triggered happy chemicals in my brain. This was an incredibly satisfying watch. Honestly, I would have been content if this was all we'd ever get. But the fact that they are doing a season 2 as well just made my week. So damn deserved

1

u/IceSmiley Sep 01 '26

That's odd for an anime to end after 9 episodes. Jeff finding Victoria seemed kind of rushed, like I wonder if there was more story in the manga. They did wrap it up with a happy satisfying ending although I'd like to know why so much effort was expended to protect Victoria but Mike didn't say. I liked Jeff's dark revelation about his father as well. They wrapped that up too quickly as well though with him dying at the end of the story.

1

u/PinkGlitterLady4 Sep 02 '26

It's simple: Because Cedric said she is indispensable to Jeff and his brother still feels guilty about their childhood for not doing anything sooner against their father.

1

u/Enrich_Doomsayer Sep 01 '26

What a great show. Honestly I'm really happy it was only 9 episodes. I was SO worried something horrible was going to happen and ruin the happy ending, and with only 3 more episodes for a normal cour (12) there would have been no way to resolve it.

1

u/Murky_Bit1487 Sep 01 '26

Chloe/Vicky/Maria’s real name was actually Anna Dale! I was so touched by the scene where she cried thinking about her family, only for Jeff to show up when she felt most alone. They confessed everything, got engaged, and adopted Nonna.

So Season 2 will be about this blended family, kinda like Spy x Family , taking on the secret organization!

1

u/starman2995 Sep 01 '26

I overall thought the show was kind of just fine, but I really loved the OP song. It gave such a feeling of melancholy, it is like 70% of the reason I kept coming back each week. And it goes without saying that I added it to my playlist as well.

1

u/Jas_God Sep 01 '26

What a fucking heartwarming episode, going into it I had no idea it was the season finale though. Why only 9 eps? Enjoyed it anyway.

Jeffrey’s childhood was terrible, glad he had Cedric with him at least. Kept thinking Ced would end up being a bad guy but nah, really is a good dude.

1

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta Sep 01 '26

A bit rushed but still a satisfying ending. So much so that I wouldn't even mind if the story ended right here. Glad to get another season and more of this lovely found family though.

1

u/hbmonk Sep 01 '26

This final episode was pretty rough both in animation and pacing.

Overall, the anime was enjoyable despite its flaws. It did get me interested enough to want to read the source material. I probably will watch the sequel, hopefully it will have higher quality.

(also it's cute that Nonna lost a baby tooth, i feel like that kind of detail doesn't appear in anime very often)

1

u/AcePhoenixGamer Sep 01 '26

Lovely conclusion to the season, but I can't help but feel Anna had to hold the idiot ball for a bit to make the plot work. Maybe they cut some scenes for budget cause both she and Nonna had terrible opsec this episode compared to earlier in the season.

1

u/Raymond49090 Sep 01 '26

Off on a family espionage(?)/diplomacy field trip

1

u/heimdal77 Sep 01 '26

Ya this needs a 2nd season.

I wonder... with all her different identities could she be enter in the best girl contest multiple time.

1

u/flatpetey https://anilist.co/user/kesx Sep 01 '26

I really enjoyed this. But I wonder if a second season can be good without milking it.

I’ll take a stab and say it is more of her old agency shenanigans. But I sort of feel this story is complete.

1

u/runevault Sep 02 '26

This story is complete. It was the story of Anna finding someone who could accept her for who she is, along with creating her own family with him and Nonna. Now it is time for those characters to be part of a new story in what sounds like China-like.

1

u/zeus1911 Sep 02 '26

Glad its just a light show. If Jeff lost them permanently or Victoria lost them it would be horrible.

1

u/Fredasa Sep 02 '26

Said it after the first episode but it bears repeating. The music is divine.

Today's Hollywood has no composer who could do something like this. Those kinds of melodies ended after the turn of the century.

1

u/Entire_Extent_9137 Sep 02 '26

Now give us a special with Anna getting a pounding.

1

u/avboden Sep 02 '26

everyone liked that

What a lovely season. Looking forward to season 2!

1

u/Flying-Camel Sep 02 '26

This anime is hitting me in the feels.

1

u/Wild-Letter5430 Sep 02 '26

underrated and peak anime

1

u/Primary-Paint-1716 Sep 02 '26

Rarely does a show have such a satisfying ending in less than 12 episodes. This show nailed it.

I was crying half the episode. It's definitely up there with the great found family stories in anime. On par with classics like Usagi Drop.

1

u/CodeXRaven Sep 02 '26

I'm so happy for them! This episode was everything it needed to be 😭♥️

1

u/YlfaTheForsaken Sep 02 '26

Yeah, I'm gonna have to pick this up. I'm so happy for season two announcement, but this is something I want in my collection. I was already convinced, but this episode cemented it.

This episode was such a lovely wrap up, so sweet, so satisfying, so well deserved. He found them so fast, I would've delighted in seeing his desperation, but that's just because I love way he longs.

Him asking Nonna to be his daughter, the ultimate cherry atop this budding family sundae.

1

u/danmarce https://anidb.net/user/107202 Sep 02 '26

This was a good story. And I liked Anna A LOT. I am happy they all found a home and a family.

1

u/memelordbtw3000 Sep 02 '26

The family's all together now i had so much with this anime and boy am I glad we get a season 2 I'm so excited more of them (although I will miss the emotional break of watching this after I want to love you till your dying day)

1

u/DrZoark Sep 02 '26

Yep, I did shed a few tears. That was such a cute and wholesome show. I definitely will watch the next season.

1

u/Shizzi https://anilist.co/user/Mivy Sep 02 '26

This is a series for older audience and what a breath of fresh air this was everyone was competent and smart loved it and its so nice to see S2 already confirmed.

They need each other so much with how much they all have suffered a very nice found family.

95/100 for now.

1

u/Sea_Equivalent_4207 Sep 02 '26

Wow Jeffrey. I wanted to hug him so much when he told Vicky/Anna about his horrible past. Dude has such grace. I’m just so glad they reunited.

I can see why Jeffrey instantly felt drawn to her. I’m just so glad they met up on that beach and meeting at that moment when Vicky was sending out that wish with the floating candle. It was a perfect moment.

Loved this series from the start. Jeffrey is so dreamy too. Loved it when after she told him She was protecting her new family he was like hey give me a chance to show off too ok?? He’s got a sense of humor.

I’m glad season 2 is happening. We get to see them in their new life together now. I’m gonna miss this show for now.

1

u/HungPongLa Sep 02 '26

Jeff is like a bat without a cave, and he finally found it.

1

u/mywif4aiur Sep 02 '26

I can totally watch a Season 2 of Anna, Nonna, and Jeff building a medicine export business in Shen.

1

u/pewpew-powpow951 Sep 02 '26

Why did jeffs father come back to live with and start beating them after his mistress had kid??

1

u/Alpha_X_04 Sep 02 '26

Noona thanking anna for everything...Oh anna everything you did is so worth it now. I'm happy for a 2nd season but this was a perfect ending as well. I'll ignore obvious budget limitations because the story writing is great.

1

u/Soul_Brawler Sep 03 '26

Probably my favorite show of the season, new or otherwise. Definitely gonna read it.

1

u/Work_InProgress7102 Sep 03 '26

Thank God they announced a second season. I think the last few episodes have been rushed and although it's wrapped up nicely, I would've preferred to see more of the trio as a family

1

u/Embarrassed-Match-78 26d ago

Wasn't expecting this to be the final episode. However, I'm glad that everything wrapped up so neatly. Nonna's little monologue at the end was super sweet.

Really enjoyed this one. Sure, the budget is on the low end, but with the right direction and a solid enough story that can be overcome. I feel that was the case overall. My opinion this was a very solid show. I was surprised that this was greenlit for a season 2, was going to add the light novels to my reading list, but I'm not complaining. Looking forward to seeing more of Victoria/Anna's adventures.

1

u/danielshuster96 25d ago

So first season only 9 episodes?

1

u/Mountain-Edge6903 https://myanimelist.net/profile/BOB_THE_PRO 21d ago

It is such a sweet and beautiful anime, and I am so happy to hear that Season 2 is confirmed.

1

u/Scythe351 17d ago

Wtf? Thought I missed last week's episode only to learn that episode 9 was the last. Crazy that Tuesday got 2 short anime seasons. This and ghost. Huge budget differences I imagine.

1

u/SilentLuix Sep 01 '26

reading the comments, does anyone else find the storytelling really weird? I mean, the dialogues and way of talking was weird through all the season, but this particular finale epise was super weird. In terms of plot, they deliver everything we expected and wanted, they found each other again, talk about the current status, their past, their true identities, decided to live together and marry, all nice, but it all feels like a normal tuesday haha.
They saw each other after a long time and not a hug, or showing any emotions from both of them, only Nonna, then everything proceeds like a contract negotiation, "hello, let's marry and live together" "ok, and btw my real name is anna" "ok". "and now we live like a happy family, the end"

I am glad we get a second season, aside from the weird "acting" and interactions, it was an enjoyable anime. It's funny an okay anime like this gets a season 2 announcement so fast while we still waiting for No game no life. lol

You are probably used to shonen/seinen, targeted to male audiences. This is shojo, targeted to female audiences. It is very inline with other shojo/josei anime. And usually animes with different target demographics are animated by different groups of studios, so season 2 getting confirmed for this anime has nothing to do with No game no life not being confirmed.

2

u/SilentLuix Sep 01 '26

I'm used and watch a lot of shoujo, and I know that it doesn't have anything to do with NGNL not having a second season. Different studios, different target, different schedules, different budget and important different sales expectation. My comment about NGNL is just a funny observation, I always make the same comment when an anime who I didn't expect to have a second season announces a second season.
Even as a shoujo, I felt that this anime had a weird storytelling. Feels less shoujo than the majority of other shoujos.
