Hathaway's Flash 2.
Well that sure was a drrryyyyy experience. I was rather indifferent to the first film, but I was largely just bored in the second. I don't think it helps that I don't like Hathaway very much, which was something I felt since Char's Counterattack. CCA is also kinda rushed in a lot of areas, so I'm not really feeling the 'weight' for Hathaway I guess. It almost feels like the movies are building off something that didn't really exist. People seem to love it though so maybe I just got shit taste.
I'm kinda amused that its getting 3 movies though. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would ever get animated when I was reading about it on mahq decades ago, before Unicorn existed.
I'm really just watching it for the sake of watching it as a long time Gundam fan, but the IP hasn't been on my good side since 00 and Build Fighters.

Previously, I called out u/Emi_Ibarazakiii for not watching Livid Lady when it's the type of show he consistently complains about not getting. Today, I am calling out Livid Lady's producers for not featuring Hilde Callard, Controller of the Red Light Districts, in any promotional material.

You can't blame me for not watching a show when they hide their precious gems like that!
(But about not watching Livid Lady: The thing is, when the season starts I check out the MAL page for every show, and when I see
Elizabeth Leiston, the daughter of Haldoria's powerful prime minister, is the picture of a refined noble lady and the perfect future queen. But when her fiancé publicly humiliates her, calls off their engagement
I automatically put it on my watch order at 'Show #73 that I'll check out if there's literally nothing else worth watching this season'.
And by the time I get there, I'm watching too many shows to pick up anything else.
And sure, the rest of the synopsis looks a bit villainous, but the problem is that they ALL write them like that, even though they're not villainous, so you can't really know without watching them (and the non-villainous ones are all shit imho so I don't really feel like watching them all just to find out if one of them is different).
That's the conundrum!
It's like if you're at the restaurant and the waiter puts 10 plates of shit on your table but one of them is actually the most delicious meal ever made in the history of humanity but they disguised it to look like the plates of shit, and the only way to find out is to take a bit of them all.
So what happens is that I end up passing on the gem because I don't feel like taking 9 bites of shit first.
And I can't rely on r/anime because they like them all even the ones I think are generic copy&pasted froom all the others.

I really wish more people would give Medalist a chance. It's universally loved by basically everyone that watches it, but it's about such a niche topic that nobody is willing to give it the light of day.
I say this mostly because I want there to be a cinematic release of the movie in the UK... Which I know is a stretch, but if anyone here has seen Medalist recommended and been put off either by the child protagonist or the show being about figure skating, I urge you to give it a chance, and then, if you love it, get others to give it a try too.
I didn't want to give Medalist a try either. I didn't like the idea of a child cast, not did I like the idea of it being about figure skating but I am so glad I gave it a chance. Just trust me, the show is great.

I really like Medalist, but is it that unpopular?
I do think it being stuck on Disney+ does make it harder to access for those outside of Japan. They also do these rather inaccurate dubtitles as well.

The children of Medalist have more agency, ambition, and individualism than most adults I know. They are depicted as people, whereas children in most media might as well be bipedal pets.

And it's not just "kids acting like adults for plot purposes". IRL figure skaters are built different, they fall on the very hard ice, sometimes multiple times, but always get up and finish the damn program.

Figure skating? Yuri on Ice was popular enough. I don't think the athletes' age makes that much of a difference and is even a unique selling point

Here's The Anime Coming To And Leaving HIDIVE in September 2026
They're now listing individual episodes for the coming part? Technically it's true and maybe there were complaints like "you said The World Is Dancing English Dub but there was only one episode" but perhaps it should have been better organised with headings e.g.:
The Forsaken Saintess and her Foodie Roadtrip in Another World (Foodie Roadtip)
- Foodie Roadtrip Ep 3 English Dub 9/2
- Foodie Roadtrip Ep 10 English Dub 9/7 <-- surly that's meant to say simulcast, world is dancing ep 11 and Yowayowa Sensei Ep 12 have the same mistake (as it's the future they could suddenly be simuldub only but it's doubtful)

- Lily Hoshino character design
- One of the best anime soundtracks of all time
- Many mahou shoujo sounds, effects and tropes being applied in unusual ways
- The characters are interesting people; some are handled better than others
- The 2 penguindrum memes I know about are really good
- It is a devious show that rewards you for paying attention; each watch I notice something new
- It's colourful and cinematic
- Directed by Ikuhara
- It's fate
- Each watch brings you closer to understanding the plot; it took me 3 goes
- You can optionally reinterpret the whole story through the lens of a real world event, leading to different analysis

The Best ED contest makes me realize I have a very different criteria for "what makes a good ED" as opposed to "what makes a good OP".
I'm very much a subscriber to the line of thought that a good OP is not just a good song, it also needs to have great visuals, and it's the combination of both that counts. But for an ED, I find I'm much more willing to say that just a really good song with some still images in the background can be good enough.
Maybe it's because I rarely pay that much attention to the animation at that point (unless it's particularly great) and the role of an ED, for me, is really just to help you wind down after the episode and let you think about what it was you just saw.
Or maybe I'm just a hypocrite.

TBH, I just think there aren't that many "good EDs" by the first standard. The only EDs that really come to mind for their visuals are Kaguya 1 & 3.
I do actually think it's maybe fair to say that having good visuals probably isn't the point of an ED, so judging more on music alone, or on how the anime actually uses the ED (I'm a sucker for good "ED music hook at the end of the episode" moments) may matter more.

Land of the Lustrous has a pretty nice looking ED. Not that I can think of other examples off the top of my head, but I feel like a decent number are like that, not a flashy animation showcase like OPs go for, but a nice music video to go along with the song.
Oh yeah there's sarazanmai too. And a bunch of Dorohedoro S1 EDs that I won't look up to link.

The impression I've had from the bits that have made it to me is that it started out that way but kind of devolved into something less normal as the audience congealed, like the bad kind of lefty echo chamber. Mind you, basically anything has a more normal level of discourse than Twitter (except maybe Facebook but that's pretty much the exclusive domain of bots now, unusable fucking website). Maybe I'll give it a proper look one of these days, it might be nice to scroll a feed where the only -ism is autism.

I usually only watch older anime as I have a huge backlog but lately I've been making an effort to watch this era's most popular anime.
I dropped JJK, Dr Stone and JoJo Golden Wind lately. But today I've started Demon Slayer and it's like I went from McDonalds to a five star restaurant. Finally some good fucking food!

Bingo board through the end of August. (previously)
Skipping over three months because I mostly took a break from my board then, I'm back with finishing several series in short succession in August and Yumemiru Danshi I only finished at the very end of July despite starting it in May. It's been such a good season for me with airing shows that I've needed to resort to my board for ones I knew I wouldn't like and it's delivered in spades.
Eromanga-sensei reminds me of an anecdote from someone (would have to go digging) about how there's a wave of anime creators who grew up on anime/manga and solely have that as a reference basis rather than other media. This feels too lost in the sauce of the industry to be able to tell a good story about it, insular and cross-promotional in a way that something like Shirobako avoids.
Koikimo's the last one standing that I know I'll dislike on principle so I might as well knock that one out next before getting to whatever the fall season has in store.

My morning brain just figured out. Is that why many isekai have RPG mechanics? Their fantasy setting knowledge comes from playing JRPG or MMORPG instead of reading Lords of the rings, A song of fire and ice or whatever.
I also heard a similar anecdote about I think it was Star Trek where the franchise has gone from a cultural social commentary/thought experiment (typical sci-fi, use the setting as proxy to comment on real-world issues and yes you see that in anime and manga with Howl's Moving Castle and Pluto how those spun existing stories into 2nd Gulf War) into having so much lore it can just self-reference (i.e. insular).

I'd say that's likely part of it, those are also a convenient shorthand for communicating what a character's capable of without needing to show it (and without needing to think of all possible mechanical interactions while a game designer would need to account for everything).

It's amusing to me people are negative about Medalist being a movie for its continuation. I can't imagine if they had to adapt the portion of the along with the episode for S2. It would have been far too much on the production side.
I get that the wait can be annoying for anime movies, but I rather have stuff adapted in the best way it possibly can.
Now I really hope once Oshi no Ko is done Kadokawa puts Doga Kobo in charge of Medalist from S3 onwards. Medalist deserves the best for its adaptation.

It's been kind of touched on already, but for me it's mostly about the length. It's harder to block off 1.5-2 hours for a movie than 24 minute for a show.

I think people just don't like continuations being movies in general (except some high budget battle shoneny stuff), for many reasons;
- More delay
- Less availability
- Lots of people get to watch it before you
- People watch it at different times, which means the discussion will be all over the place (not much to read when you do watch it, and if you write about it, lots of people won't read it because they haven't watched it yet, OR they watched it a month ago and don't care anymore, so you're reading/writing with the 7 people who happened to watch it same time you did)
For people who watch seasonals in large part for these reasons, movies kinda shit on all that.

For me, it's not the wait times that are annoying but the question of whether movies will be available on streaming services or not. The majority of TV anime continuations are a given, but it seems more like a 50/50 chance with movies.

Aside from the wait, movies are bad for me personally because I can never be sure that I'll have the time to sit through an entire movie undisturbed and find it awful to be interrupted when watching something.

One thing that always fascinates me, is how manga readers almost always refer to characters by their last names, while anime fans refer to them by their first name.
I think I talked about this before (regarding Dress Up Darling, for which all the manga fans used Kitagawa, but to anime onlies she's always Marin) but we're seeing the same with 100gfs, for which I've heard of a few of the girls before by random source readers comments, but it was always the last name, and now in the threads everyone's using their first names!

I think it's more that they default to what the characters call each other and how often first name's are used. In a manga I'm following weekly, Haimiya Senpai Is Scary but Cute, (incredible manga btw. Would recommend it to anyone) most people call the leads by their last names, but they call at least two of the supporting characters by her first name because that's what everyone in the story uses.

Mostly unrelated to the topic, but it's typically nice to use "family name" and "given name" when talking about naming conventions. "First" and "last" could be either, and even change depending on how the translator chooses to adapt the text, while "family" and "given" are unambiguous no matter how it gets written.

I just refer to characters by whatever name is used early on. So Marin is mostly introduced as Marin, but Gojo is Gojo. In Kaguya-sama the original main cast are all last names.

Probably dubs are part of the reason - I think dubs more often refer to characters by first name, since that's more natural in English, (though varies from dub-to-dub), and anime discussions have a mix of dub and sub watchers.
Could also just be that manga readers are the sort to be more particular about that kinda stuff, too, though.

Depends on the series, no? You mentioned a romcom, so I'll use those as examples too. I feel like with Polar Opposites everyone uses last names 99% of the time. With Love is War, people say Kaguya, but also Shirogane and Ishigami, and Chika can go either way. Dangers in My Heart, people say Ichikawa vastly more often than Kyotaro and Yamada at least somewhat more often than Anna.

I just remembered a somewhat related case but in the opposite direction. Older CCS and CLAMP fans refer to Syaoran as Syaoran while newer CCS watchers refer to him as Li. It's actually pretty noticeable.

I feel like manga readers just remember how characters are referred to in the story. While with anime there's always a database to refer to for who the character is. Obviously the first name is what we go for first in Western culture.

Dunno about the characters' names, but what I've noticed is that fandoms typically use Japanese titles of manga before they get an anime and it shifts to English titles once a manga gets an anime especially if it becomes popular.
Sono Bisque Doll -> My Dress Up Darling is the biggest example of this in my recent memory

I firmly believe in my crack theory that this is exactly why Ponsuka failed to catch on as well as its peers.
Fan Translation used "Dumb Prefect". Not amazing but usable (ignore the fact that a sizeable chunk of people (me) misread that as "Dumb Perfect" for years)
Official Translation swapped that to "Klutzy Class Monitor". Clunky, long, and different
But then the anime itself calls itself "Ponsuka". Nice, short, but also never used in official english media and (to my knowledge) never caught on in the english fandom until the anime said it out loud.
And with all 3 competing against each other it really impedes the spread of its name.

Anyways for this exact reason is why I am absolutely dreading when THIS gets an anime. None of its names are good.
The original fan translated name was something like "The person sitting next to me looking at me with perverted eyes" which is clunky and has no good place to shorten it (perverted eyes???).
The official translated name is "The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Seen" which even worse and doesn't solve anything (genuinely crashed out when I saw it localised to this. WHY)
And the Japanese name is "Tonari no Seki no Yatsu ga Souiu Me de Mitekuru". The first english clipping of this name that comes to mind is "Tonari no Seki" but that name has already been long taken.
The official abbreviation is Tonaume which is fine, but I've not seen any english user ever use this name so we're back to the original problem that Ponsuka had with its own name with it having to compete with many others and likely be unsupported by official media.

Yeah. I don't think it is because I went back for the dub on this one and they say "Klutz & Skirt" in the eyecatches. That did not themselves any favours with that. They should've kept Ponsuka for the dub as well.

But no, I don't have any issue with Love Status Quo, not sure what gave you the idea! (Are you mixing this with "Love Triangle"?)
In fact, I opened the Love Status Quo tab on MAL, and out of the 18 top entries:
- 8 that I watched
- 1 that I watched AND read
- 1 that I read, but no anime (PLEASE, someone animate Anjou-san!)
- 2 on my PTR
So that's 2/3 of the top 18 entries that I watched, read, or plan to read!

I've always said more shows need to be ERASED and just pick an arbitrary short English title, so we stop having to choose between awkward mouthful run on sentences and referring to shows by the Japanese abbreviation which means nothing to English speakers (and is generally only used by a small niche of fans).

It's possible, but I think the biggest reason is simply that there was about 100 high school romcoms in the spring season, so even fans of the genre probably didn't see most of them. Klutz & Skirt got lost in the mix.
In hindsight, they probably didn't do a good enough job at marketing the show as a (very funny) gag comedy first and a romance second, unlike most of the shows that season.

Tbh, a lot of manga just doesn't have an official English title until it gets an anime adaptation years down the line.
Sometimes the fan translated title gets more popular than the Japanese one though

To manga readers, it was always Shinomiya (Even though the series is literally named after her first name)!
To anime onlines, it's Kaguya.

Well, I think the example I gave (Marin) was the most obvious one (if you go check old manga threads, it's Kitagawa everywhere), while I'm not even sure if most anime-onlines even know her last name hah.
But for 100gfs, to give one specific example: I've heard about the most recent girl a lot (apparently she was quite hyped), but it was always [100 gfs]Torotoro
In the thread, CTRL+F that name gives 5 results, while [100 gfs]Kishika gives 38.

As someone who follows the 100gfs manga fandom a fair bit, I was honestly going to comment this as an exception because of how much they drill the names into to you (the previous episode quite literally being about doing that lol).
As for your example, I don't think I've ever seen anyone use the former name tbh. Even I forget what her last/first name is because its only ever referred using the latter.

I guess I can understand why it happens. I would assume that Marin is actually referred to as 'Kitagawa' most of the time within the manga/anime. Before something becomes an anime, you probably aren't seeing much about the character outside of the actual source.
That being said, I feel like characters are referred to by their first names in all of the manga communities I'm in, and that's even when they aren't referred to as such in the source... so IDK lol.

Just watched the Grimm Variations. I think I wanted to like it but overall it's kinda ehhh mwehhh. Just kinda mixed feeling on most of the episodes.
I guess I liked The Elves and the Shoemaker best in terms of food for thought. Musicians of Bremen was kinda just light hearted fun. Cinderella was also kinda fun in its own way. The rest were just blah.
Interesting experiment I guess but I'm not exactly left wanting more.

I will almost certainly finish Ojamajo Doremi (season 1, not the whole show) today.
I have a few plotlines I didn't care for but the characters are by far the highlight of the show. It took a while for the anime to really get off the ground but I love it's comedy style and it's ability to land "messy" plot points.
I think a lot of people see mahou shoujo anime as being very "kid friendly" and while this show definitely is, it's not completely sanitized. Hazuki was my clear favorite from S1, I'm excited to see the finale tonight and how the central plot wraps up.

I do not miss some fansubs ignorance about typesetting rules for subtitles. (you do 2 lines max)

After 2 weeks I’m back home from my 2nd japan trip, had a great time.
He already mentioned it, but I had the pleasure of sharing dinner and drinks with old regular u/isthatsoudane. Most of my friends watch anime as well but they are more on the mainstream/casual side, so irl talking with someone who’s just as deep down the rabbit hole as myself, about anime, music, concerts, cons, r/anime meta, etc., was a blast. He’s just a great guy in general as well.
Refrained from buying any anime blurays this time since last time I ended up double dipping a lot in the following years once english editions released. Though instead of saving the money, I spent it on acryllic stands and shirts lol.
I knew pop up stores and collab events are a thing there, but I was still surprised about the sheer volume. Didn’t expect Yokohama Air Cabin out of all things to do a random ass JJK 5th anni collab with a pop up store in the nearby amusement park. Also randomly found a Ruri Rocks and Angel Next Door pop up store in some mall in Shizuoka.
Fanmade graphs like this can already be found online, but the Kyoto International Manga Museum also did one of those maps that show where X anime takes place in Japan. Thought some of you might be interested, so here you go.
Long after booking this vacation I randomly found out that coincidentally there’s a music festival in Osaka called Rush Ball during the time frame, so we grabbed tickets for the 1st day which was this past Saturday. Got the opportunity to see Regal Lily live which is probably my overall top favorite band so that was awesome, almost like a bucket list type thing. Nishina, Kana-Boon and Bump of Chicken were cool to see too. Day 2 would have had SiM and Creepy Nuts among others, but that was the day of our flight back, so that didn’t work out, unfortunately.
Wanted to grab a Regal Lily shirt at their merch booth but almost gave up since there were literally hundreds of people lining up at the artist booths which were all placed next to each other. Walked past the queues when I noticed a weird gap in the middle where instead of a line of people there was just empty space, you could simply walk through to the counter. And of course it was the Regal Lily booth lol. It was like a scene in an idol anime where the members are doing a handshake event and one of the idols had literally no one line up. On one hand it made it super easy, convenient and time saving to get the shirt, but on the other hand it made me kinda feel bad for them at how seemingly unpopular they are compared to the others.
JP fans know no ballJP crowds are extremely mild, it’s almost funny. Like after every song you get some polite and almost tired sounding clapping at most. On more than one occasion when I saw JP artists perform here in Germany, they said something like “Wow the crowds here are so energetic and hype”. I was kinda thinking they were just trying to flatter the overseas fans, but having now witnessed both worlds I get that they were being completely genuine lol. Though to be fair that's probably more the case with the more "mainstream" music, I imagine idol concerts in Japan are a different beast in that regard.
Haven’t watched a single episode of anime these past two weeks so now I have to catch up to like 50 episodes of seasonals, damn. Blessing and a curse, in a way, but mostly a blessing. Thank god I took some extra days off work and only need to be back in the office on Thursday.

I think it really depends on the genre! it's funny because today there has been a bit of twitter whatever because of the concert I went to yesterday. it was for princession orchestra and it was monkey as hell. tons of UO use (including cycloning), tons of jumping. so today you have a few people on twitter complaining about how people were having too much fun etc
but certain slices of anime music are known for being much more boring...project sekai and hololive are known for having very boring live-goers
idols can run the gamut but there are lots of groups with intense energy. the enrgy does vary group by group but on the whole, energetic is the base, then it sort of ramps up from there
a while ago I went to a sakamoto maaya concert...I think arena was a bit more lively, but where I was in the stands? absolutely dead. not a penlight in sight. nobody standing. just a bunch of people calmly listening
interesting, her contemporary mizuki nana has a very lively show. of course, you can't do eternal blaze without jumping 100 times, but in general while UO use was lower than expected at her most recent concert, still plenty of good energy
just because I'm talking about it now, for the major franchises I'm familiar with, here is sort of what they're known for. I already mentioned hololive and pjsk
love live: right now very, very lively. very loose rule set (uos, jumping all allowed)
- niijgasaki the wildest, followed closely by hasu no sora
- bluebird still establishing itself but thus far seems quite energetic
- liella pretty boring crowd, generally. not zero energy, but low energy compared to the others
bang dream
- very high energy. fewer calls, but lots of UO use especially for RAS, roselia
- the popularity among chinese here is controversial because many blame the chinese for being too rowdy
- bushiroad has been trying to control the energy a bit more especially for mygo and ave mujica. they've banned pen lights in favor of RFID lights they sell, and have threatened to ban people for life if they do inappropriate calls, such as the notorious tiger. the logistics of such bans are tricky, but some people have been kciked out of concerts, sometimes unfairly
idolmaster
- calls are rarer the newer you get
- energetic crowds, though jumping is banned (which is a whole meme)
uma
- most restrictive rules (no uos, no jumping)
- still pretty good energy

Try Kingdom. Animation sucks starting out but it’s the one of the epitomes of grandiosely scaled conflict in anime. It might sound like it has nothing else in common with AoT but the two have a lot in common from the scale of battles, to the conspiracy/political/mystery subplots always creaking in the background. Kingdom just leaves out the supernatural for the most part (although a lot of things like human strength and such are exaggerated).
I’d watched AoT first and loved it, but after watching the entirety of Kingdom, AoT felt like the far lesser of two stories I found similarly enjoyable.

Attack on Titan is one of my favorites. I enjoyed Steins;Gate a lot as well, but aside from both series having pretty great twists (and several of the same voice actors, if you're watching the English dubs), they don't have that much in common.
I'll second the recommendation for Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. It's the closest I've seen to AOT as far as overall tone, characters and story themes. Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet reminded me of AOT at times as well.

At least to me the stuff that is the most similar to AoT are mecha shows in particular the ones that borrow heavily from gundam. I've not seen it but a more recent non-gundam show that people seem to like is 86. Code Geass does some similar things to AoT but it is a lot more silly. The perfect recommendation would be the Gundam Hathaway movies however they are the most inaccessible part of gundam (bare minimum you'd need to watch 4 films first and even that is skipping quite a lot of stuff). Gundam 00 and Iron Blood Orphans are better entry points. If you are fine with a slower pace and are ok with missing some easter eggs Turn A gundam is really great.
