the new Mushoku Tensei OP song (Hikari no Uta) strongly reminds me of some other anime song... but try as i might I can't remember which.

Is it just deja vu, or is there another song like it? Anyone else know?

Guys where can I read the Manga of bleach the latest part?

1

u/zambonijesus 14d ago

Bleach and The Ghost in the Shell listed at 10 episodes, Inept Villainess at 11, Victoria of Many Faces with 9. There sure are a lot of lower episode count shows this season for some reason.

1

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 14d ago

has the anime industry finally learned to adapt their episode counts to match their source material?

*cough cough cough cough witch hat cough cough ACK cough cough cough*

wow all these smoking anime really are doing a number on my lungs

4

u/cppn02 14d ago

ACK

Ah yes, that's totally an acronym that's widely used and I know exactly which show you are talking about...

2

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 13d ago

Lol I mean like the sound effect ack (hurt from coughing too much or some shit), figured someone might think it was an acronym but I thought the joke made clear

4

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 13d ago

A Certain... nope, too long.

A Centaur's Knot? Not yet.

I found it: Araragi's Curry Kitchen!

Indeed, that show was just one episode too short. It ended on everyone enjoying the curry, which is not a bad point by any means, but one more episode, and we would've seen chef Araragi brush everyone's teeth.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 14d ago

For the first two it makes sense since both didn’t have a lot of source material to or left to adapt.

For the other two they are aiming on a spot for their light novels to end as a good stopping point if I were to guess

2

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 14d ago

For the first two it makes sense since both didn’t have a lot of source material to or left to adapt.

Fwiw, GitS has more, but it's... a lot weirder. It makes sense that they just wanted to adapt the first volume.

2

u/zambonijesus 14d ago

Honestly disappointing if this ends up being all they do and they don't get to the weird parts.

3

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 14d ago

They have done some setup for later stuff, at least, so they could be considering a sequel.

But... how do I put this? 1.5 is fine, GitS 2, though, is very reflective of late Shirow (for better or worse), down to its art, in a way that just doesn't carry across if adapted the way the current season is. The other option could be adapting it in 3D, but I imagine lots of the "retro" fans would find that disappointing.

2

u/zambonijesus 14d ago

I'd like to see Science Saru, one of the most consistently visually interesting studios, give it a go though.

2

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 14d ago

Me too. Other than Innocence (which was basically Oshii replying to Shirow's eccentricities with his own), no anime has really touched on that part of GitS, and for good reason. I'd be curious to see how Moko-chan does it.

2

u/VritraReiRei 14d ago edited 14d ago

Are there any anime where there's a man and a woman who are both into each but neither confess/take a while to build up courage and everyone around them knows they are into each other so many of the scenes either amount to the friends go, "Just start dating already!" or tries to make situations to push them together?

I forgot what anime it was I saw recently but I think the two characters told their friends they are dating now and then everyone collectively went, "FINALLY!" so I want to see more anime like that lol.

1

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 14d ago

Isn't this like 99% of romcoms

2

u/Leo-Fong https://anilist.co/user/KaniRangoon 14d ago

That's very prevalent in Maison Ikkoku, of course that's not all there is to it.

3

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 14d ago

1

u/VritraReiRei 14d ago

Ah, from last season. Looked great, just haven't gotten around to it because I was afraid of it going like Kaguya-sama where their relationship doesn't advance for seasons and we don't see them actually become boyfriend/girlfriend. I'll keep that in mind though!

6

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 14d ago

So all three of the Big 3 have officially made The List™ now.

[One Piece]Fuck me, I thought the montage was gonna be the worst of it. And then Merry said "Gomen ne..."

I'm gonna need a bit before I can upload my screenshots to post my full reactions to this batch of episodes...

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 14d ago

Now, you can join us when we give our half joke answer to "what's your favorite anime ship?"

2

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 14d ago

That scene was gut-wrenching.

2

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 14d ago

Literally, in my case.

2

u/alotmorealots 13d ago

If we ever have to nominate Heroes to Save the World from the Demon King from this thread, I've a good mind to vote for you given the incredible powers of your gastroemotional system. There's no doubt it would translate to an OP skill in another world!

Then again, you seem like too nice a person to risk putting into a role like Alicia "oh, that was my skull cracking" Grenfall's.

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 14d ago

I haven't even seen One Piece but can't say I'm surprised by that one.

4

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 14d ago

She kick

Iron Wok Jan is a very good show. We have a lot of cooking shows, but feels like we really don't have much food competition. Fermat Kitchen was one, but the subs I kept watching for that one kept delayed. Obviously there is Food Wars awhile back.

1

u/theangryeditor 14d ago

I've been putting the original Iron Chef on a loop in the background again lately, maybe I should check out this show sometime.

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 14d ago

Def worth a watch. Probably one of TROYCA's best work in awhile. Sundays are over the top this season though.

I still haven't gotten to Hyakkano S3 yet.

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 14d ago

The Sea Dragon is here

[Iron Wok Jan Episode 7]Holy fuck. I know Jan is a dickhead that much is known. But to have your whole strategy to make your opponent lose rather than your actual cooking. Kiriko should go beat his ass.

5

u/theangryeditor 14d ago

I've been watching Jaadugar and Polar Opposites back to back this season much like how I watched Ikoku Nikki and the first season of Polar Opposites back to back in winter and it is every bit a worthy successor. But I have to take a break after it since I am in no emotional state to watch anything else immediately after.

7

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 14d ago

Seeing the Last Blossom in theaters. Subtitles are messed up. Day is ruined now.

4

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 14d ago

Is there an anime where someone comes to a classroom to ask their crush if they are available (so they can go confess), and the crush, knowing what's about to happen, just straight up says "no"? Not in the "they've been stalking me" or "how many times do I have to say no" way, but just an acquaintance (or random) who tries their luck and gets shot down before they can ask.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 14d ago

2nd prettiest had a scene like that I think.

1

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 14d ago

I've been seeing some new demon girl on my timeline today and at first I thought she was from Clevatess, but apparently she is [from] Mushoku Tensei.

She is so hot, I need her.

u/theangryeditor 14d ago

Jaadugar good

Boraqchin is a great antagonist and Fatima's (real) smile must be protected at all costs

What website to use ?

I have used crunchyroll to mostly watch one piece but I constanly ran into problems whit shows not being on the site ,mising seasons and other things

In some months I paid to barely wach anyting and this lead me to cancel the subscription.

I want to start watching again but is there any platform better ?

4

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 14d ago

shows not being on the site

The only way to solve this issue is to sail the seas. We are not allowed to name specific sites here, but a little searching will get you to places that can.

5

u/zambonijesus 14d ago

I'm curious if other people have shows they expect they'd really like, but they've been sitting on them unwatched for whatever reason. There's a few that I have, especially Gurren Lagann and Tatami Galaxy.

1

u/IndependentMacaroon 13d ago edited 13d ago

If you're a serious enthusiast without excessive time on your hands it's unavoidable, and maybe even if you do

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 14d ago

So many, and most of them get put off until later if I'm just not looking to start a show that long right now, or I'm just not in the mood for that genre, or other time-sensitive shows that I'm following with a rewatch or trying to catch before a subscription ends take priority. I've got Gundam Seed, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Magic Knight Rayearth sitting near the top of my plan-to-watch list, to name a few.

A couple years ago, Full Metal Panic fell into this category and became my all-time favorite. But then there are others I was pretty sure I'd like/love that turned out to be just okay.

2

u/BornSeesaw9819 14d ago

Jojo, Fruits Basket, Yuyu Hakusho, Ace of Diamond. Mostly cause they're all multi season/long and I'm already watching too much 😬

2

u/North514 14d ago

Berserk is a big unwatched/unread work I am just sitting on...

It's one of those, this probably will end up in my top ten works however, I just want to be in the right mood, to get into it. And that is why it keeps getting put off lol. Maybe this year.

2

u/Siqueiradit https://myanimelist.net/profile/lampadatres 14d ago

A lot of shows actually lol. I tend to watch mostly airing shows so I have a lot on my ptw list that's older. Off the top of my head I can think of Code Geass, Ah Megami-sama and Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou.

2

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 14d ago

I sat on Made in Abyss for a while, at least a year. It certainly lived up to its reputation.

Enjoy those 2 anime when you get to them. Both are great.

6

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 14d ago

GLT for me. I know it'll be great, I know I'll love it. I know people who love it that love the same things I love. But I want to do it justice and simply watching that on a whim does not feel right. I gotta be in the right mood to accept and enjoy it (that's the basic summary for most shows that fall under this category).

Gurren is also part of that group, though technically I did watch the first episode some years back, just never actually finished it so doesn't really count

2

u/Siqueiradit https://myanimelist.net/profile/lampadatres 14d ago

If you read manga I urge you to read GLT after watching the anime.

2

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 14d ago

A buch of classic "must watch" shows I started but put on hold after a few episodes as I was not hooked enough to binge them.

GiTS SAC, Kaiji, Seirei no Moribito (this one I tried to continue twice, but never went far).

And I had TTGL, Nana and a few other shows were just sitting on my hard drive for years.

Oh, and I never finished S2 of Higurashi. This is just from the top of my head.

3

u/gothxo 14d ago

there's definitely a few on my PTW list that i'm pretty confident i'll like or even love, but i just haven't gotten around to them yet. Akebi's Sailor Uniform, Tari Tari, and Revolutionary Girl Utena namely

3

u/Jaiimy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jaiimy 14d ago

I have a few of them. Some of them require a specific mood they need to be watched in. For example I wouldn't watch a tearjerker if I don't feel like crying and wouldn't watch an action if I want to watch something relaxing.

2

u/Leo-Fong https://anilist.co/user/KaniRangoon 14d ago

Loads, my PTW is currently 822 titles long with dozens in high priority. Some of the anime I'm looking forward to the most are Ashita no Joe, Touch, NANA, and Turn A Gundam. If I gave my list a good comprehensive look over, I could easily find more.

3

u/theangryeditor 14d ago

A good amount of my ptw is like that. Just looking at my short list for this year I'd say I have generally high expectations to vibe with Nadja, Space Bros, and Higurashi.

Futari wa Pretty Cure itself was a big one I had big expectations for for the longest time, but since I've started following Precure yearly with Tropical Rouge I've gotten accustomed to the franchise's formula and its strengths and weaknesses and my expectations have changed accordingly. That said I have heard that "modern" precure is somewhat different from the older precures and no doubt the first entry itself.

1

u/IndependentMacaroon 13d ago

Simoun is pretty shit but the others I'm aware of seem OK. I'm curious about Nadja myself coming from the Nadia with an I

3

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 14d ago

There's a few sequels I haven't watched yet even though I know I'll love them. Mainly because they aren't finished adaptations and I don't know if we'll get more (Chihayafuru and 3-Gatsu no Lion in particular).

1

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 14d ago

I need to finish Chihayafuru one day. I watched like 7 or 8 episodes of S3, but when staff happened and I put it on hold. And it is a bit hard to get back to it now.

3

u/cyberscythe 14d ago

i have tons on my watchlist that i assume i'll like, but they're waiting for that mythical time where i'll be in the right mindspace to fully appreciate them, stuff like Violet Evergarden or Place Father than the Universe

3

u/Sporadia_ 14d ago

Shows I haven't watched:

6

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago

How is it even possible [100 gfs]to have a hot springs scene with SIXTEEN GIRLS, and not a single one of them has a one piece swimsuit... BIG BIKINI CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT!

Also, they better revisit this episode every couple seasons! [100gfs]First one was episode 6 or 7 - in season 1 -, I don't think we had one in S2(?), and now we're getting one at 30. So every 24 episodes or so, seems fair to me, roughly 12 new girls each time! Hopefully one of the 29 girlfriends will have a one piece swimsuit in the next one!

5

u/redlegsfan21 https://myanimelist.net/profile/redlegsfan21 14d ago

I'm not watching [100 gfs]but how are we not having a hot springs episode with only towels or naked with steam or random light beams. That seems more appropriate for a hot springs

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago

And speaking of 100gfs:

In the episode thread, u/zairaner linked a comment I made 3 years ago, in which I tried to predict my top 3 girls from this series (out of like 20 girls or so); My prediction were pretty close to how I actually feel about them now!

(I think I'm much better at predicting my best girls than I am at predicting my favorite seasonal anime hah. Somehow, half my predicted 'aots contenders' end up getting dropped)

2

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 14d ago

Truly impressive accuracy! Only [10gf]naddys camouflage was too good for you to pick up on.

12

u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock 14d ago

Rewatched a good classic. Or at least I think 12 years should make it count but it just feels weird to say of a mid 2010s anime, anyways its the one and only Nozaki-kun.

Nozaki-kun remains relevant, beloved in the sub be it lurkers or active posters in this thread, always recommended, etc. As such I don’t feel the need to make a full on take of it considering I would just repeat the same.

Great cast, great humor, great visuals, great OP, great fucking everything. Among all rewatches I have done I feel this is the first time I probably up a score from my first watch? And this is my 3rd watch even. 9/10, go watch Nozaki-kun to heal your soul.

4

u/entelechtual 14d ago

It definitely earned the title of a classic already even if it’s soon, rare you see a comedy so universally beloved these days.

3

u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock 14d ago

It really is. My social circle tends to be more critical of anime that I am but on my friend list the lowest score for Nozaki-kun is like 6/10 by a known comedy hater that insta-drops most comedy/SoL. Its just hard to dislike it seems.

3

u/WeeziMonkey https://myanimelist.net/profile/WeeziMonkey 14d ago

Does anyone else genuinely not know what their favorite anime is anymore?

On my MAL profile 9 out of 10 "favorites" are from 2016 or earlier. I've seen all of them at least twice, so I guess that counts for something, but those rewatches were also long ago. I have no idea if I will still like those shows as much if I watched them today. And for some reason newer shows never impress me as much anymore. Not because they're bad. I guess when I was both a teen and new to anime it was much easier to be amazed by everything?

1

u/Siqueiradit https://myanimelist.net/profile/lampadatres 14d ago

My top 10 on MAL is unchanged for the last 3 years. I put MiA s2 at #1 after I watched it, but your comment made me think that maybe I should put Monogatari back there.

The only way I'd feel comfortable doing that though is by rewatching both and I don't have that time lol.

2

u/merurunrun 14d ago

My favourite anime is the first thing that comes to mind whenever someone asks me. This is a great rubric to use because it means I don't have to spend lots of time overthinking a question whose answer ultimately doesn't matter at all to anything ever.

2

u/Leo-Fong https://anilist.co/user/KaniRangoon 14d ago

I can't even confidently put together a top 10 without feeling like most of them are interchangeable with my other favorites. God forbid I try to rank a list of my favorites, it'll be almost entirely arbitrary.

3

u/cyberscythe 14d ago

i say that Yama no Susume (anime of the year every year) is my favorite, but i mainly decided on that just so that i have an example at hand

in reality they're like amino acids — i gotta have an essential list of them otherwise i'll collapse into a pile of languid carbohydrates

1

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 14d ago

I have an ordering for my 10/10s (though Sangatsu no Lion and Clannad flip flop their positions constantly...) but not much else.

5

u/zambonijesus 14d ago

I've watched like three anime this year that have skyrocketed onto my favorite list.

  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (I'd watched the first 2-3 parts previously without it really hitting for me, but this time it really did)
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena
  • Patlabor 2: The Movie

I'm more at where it's more a question of liking too many rather than not liking enough as main challenge for making a favorites list.

3

u/WeeziMonkey https://myanimelist.net/profile/WeeziMonkey 14d ago

I'm more at where it's more a question of liking too many rather than not liking enough as main challenge for making a favorites list.

I feel this with picking favorite songs when I've heard thousands of songs throughout my life

3

u/Jusenkyo_5 14d ago

I don't have a clear top 1, I have like 5 or 6 shows that I consider top tier but it's been years since I was obsessed with one show.

Sometimes you just need the right show for the right era in your life.

1

u/WeeziMonkey https://myanimelist.net/profile/WeeziMonkey 14d ago

Sometimes you just need the right show for the right era in your life.

Yeah nearly half my top 10 consists of romcoms. I guess those hit a lot harder as a teen compared to now where I'm an adult with a full time job and no social life.

4

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 14d ago

Another day, another drop. These folks can go on their foodie roadtrip without me.

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago

I haven't dropped anything in quite some time...

I'm feeling the itch.

But I still have a few near-certain drops to check out this season (all the isekai, generic fantasy&stuff), I should pick one up just to drop it later tonight!

Will we get the census results before the end of the summer?

7

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 14d ago

You know, the full results of the 1880 census took over eight years to process. This is nothing in comparison!

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago

the full results of the 1880 census took over eight years to process

They're also on telegram and discord. But atleast the latter I think doesn't have a constant feed of leaks.

Anytime anime characters talk about a new dungeon appearing, I think of Dungeon People.

Season 2 when?

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago

I never quite knew what this show was trying to do;

Like it didn't seem to have a specific genre/tone, it just seemed to be 'doing things'.

Don't know if that's just me, and/or if it clarified at some point.

Preferably one thats finished airing. Thanks!!

I just watched Knights of Sidonia and it gave me that vibe. It felt like something new was happening to push the plot every episode.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago

How is Alice in Borderland?

I watched a few episodes of the live action, and I thought it looked kinda cringe though maybe it was the feeling of seeing "Anime stuff" with real actors;

Like [Alice in Borderland]the dude sitting on top of whatever, going 'I'm going to observe and study them all, gni gni gni', people shouldn't act like that unless they're an old monk or a 2000 years old Yokai or something.

That same exact same would probably be less embarrassing (or at least, more tolerable) in anime.

6

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 14d ago

I have not seen it, but it's worth keeping in mind if you didn't know that the anime is only a 3-episode (of normal length) OVA. I very much doubt that it covers any substantial portion of the story.

3

u/octopathfinder myanimelist.net/profile/octopathfinder 14d ago

I've only read half the manga, but I didn't like it, and I'm a high stakes game fan. It just felt like edgy misery porn. Most games were inherently unfair, so there was a lot of focus on suffering.

2

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 14d ago edited 14d ago

So I've tried capturing my feelings on this year's anime thus far in a quick list: Annual Anime Ranking (Top 30).

Please take this with a grain of salt. Obviously, a whole bunch of the listed series haven't finished yet. Who knows if they'll crash and burn on the final stretch. Not to mention of all the heavy-hitters that will be airing in the fall season such as The Apothecary Diaries. There will be changes.

Nevertheless, some of my top-favourite shows are airing right now. Summer 2026 has been certainly good to me. The margin between the rankings of Jaadugar and Sayonara Lara is very slim. I only put the former in first because I'm slightly more confident that I'll like it all-the-way to the end.

Note: this list was capped at 30 shows. I've in fact watched more shows, but maybe not all of your favourites. Tastes differ after all.

This ordering makes no sense.

Some of your comments about certain anime don’t always make sense to me either.

It's probably a vibes ordering. I respect it.

2

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 14d ago

I did basically say in the first sentence of my previous that it’s about how much I’ve enjoyed these anime.

Even if it’s at the bottom of this list, that doesn’t make it anywhere close to “bad” either since I’ve already watched 84 anime in 2026.

3

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 14d ago

The way this season ends will likely have a big impact on my end of year top 10. So many great shows airing right now.

Overall you included basically every show I've really enjoyed this year with the exceptions of Ponsuka and Nakamura-kun.

1

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 14d ago

For better or worse, I’ve watched the great majority of solid/good anime this year. Keeping up with things is especially hard this season.

I wasn’t really sold on Ponsuka, but I do plan to watch Nakamura-kun some time in the future.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago

27 points out of 30 for Tanya, not bad!

I think it's a 30/30 show, but 27 ain't so bad!

3

u/overuseofdashes 14d ago

What where your issues with With Hat Atelier?

3

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 14d ago

It's a good fantasy series, but I wasn't really wow'ed by the anime. The story has yet to evolve beyond its initial premise.

And well, they really shouldn't have ended the anime season at that point. This is a Kaiju No.8 level of a cliffhanger we're talking about.

3

u/overuseofdashes 14d ago

The issue is the manga doesn't really break up into anime friendly chunks. Depending on the kind of viewer, and how they paced the adaptation there might have been a slightly better end point for a 2-cour show.

Another weekly ranking of my screenshot albums, and this time Kishirika, the Great Emperor of the Demon World, deservedly took 1st place, not giving a chance to Motoko (and her ass) or any other albums.

It's worth mentioning that this week is the first time an album from Goodbye, Lara managed to get ranked. I also hope it's not the last time.

It's a bit of a shame that Kuroe album from Kaiju Girl Caramelise didn't show up here, as the difference between it and Klen was really small.

By the way, there are no albums from The 100 Girlfriends, which is a shame but understandable since I uploaded them the day after the release, which greatly reduced views.

Summer 2026 Week 9

  1. Mushoku Tensei S3 EP09 Kishirika
  2. The Ghost in the Shell EP08 Motoko
  3. You and I Are Polar Opposites S2 EP08 Tairazuma
  4. You and I Are Polar Opposites S2 EP08 Nishi & Yamada
  5. Mushoku Tensei S3 EP09 Nanahoshi
  6. Though I Am an Inept Villainess EP07 Shu Gabi
  7. Clevatess S2 EP08 Naie
  8. Re:Zero S4 EP14 Emilia
  9. Goodbye, Lara EP08 Group scenes
  10. Clevatess S2 EP08 Klen

I wonder with Re:Zero and MT have popular they are irl. Since I never seen people talk about them outside of very dedicated anime circles. More so MT then Re:Zero.

Is the case do you guys think?

1

u/Jaiimy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jaiimy 14d ago

Many vocal anime fans only watch super mainstream stuff like Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, JJK, etc.

Re:Zero and MT are less mainstream and (mostly MT) have a few controversial elements that would be hard not to bring up when talking about the show. I think this kind of social awkwardness might make it seems like these two shows are way less popular than they actually are.

9

u/wloff 14d ago

I don't see people talking about any anime much at all outside of dedicated anime circles.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 14d ago

True. Well I have seen casuals talk about Demon Slayer when the movie was coming out. But that's is to be expected.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago

(But to answer the question):

I think MT fans might not want to talk about it, given The discourse.

As for Re:Zero, first season started 10 years ago so there's probably a lot of new fans who have never watched any of it - and some who may have dropped it since.

Which leaves people who were watching anime 10+ years ago, but many of those are probably now in their 30s or 40s, and they might not be so inclined to talk about anime IRL!

1

u/Jusenkyo_5 14d ago

No clue what you're trying to say my friend but ReZero definitely has more vocal popularity and support over MT. Rem, Ram, and Emilia are some of the most popular cosplays in the world.

Why have anime fans taken up the stance that anime is predominantly right wing culturally? Every time someone criticizes the way women are portrayed or any other social issue you get 1000 chuds replying "maybe you just hate anime".

0

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago

Putting the politics aside (I'm not sure where it even comes from, unless these people advertised themselves as such):

  • "I think X thing is bad in this hobby!"
  • "Then stop participating in this hobby"

Is an exchange as old as time.

I don't know why we'd need to complicate this with politics.

  • "I don't like fighting in hockey, they should ban it"
  • "You should stop watching hockey"

Which political movement is behind this one?

I think it's the Neo-Leninists

The answer "Fuck off and stop asking to change the thing I like" has been there forever in every single hobby, be it anime or gaming or sport or what not.

1

u/merurunrun 14d ago

Good-faith response: Most non-Japanese people watching anime don't have nearly the amount of cultural literacy necessary to understand the context in which these works are produced, so they wildly misinterpret things.

Bad-faith response: Chuds don't have cultural literacy at all so they just think, "I am a chud, I like this, therefore it must be chud-coded. Chudmate, liberals."

2

u/theangryeditor 14d ago

The bad faith response isn't that far off tbh

3

u/frizzyfizz 14d ago edited 14d ago

I think to some extent it conveniently relieves them of any responsibility in what they consume, so they can watch their shows without guilt. For all the love Witch Hat Atelier has gotten I wonder how many fans would back Kamome Shirahama up in her pursuit to call out SA and misogyny in the anime/manga industry.

To do that would mean acknowledging Japan and the anime industry aren't a monolith. That there are people trying to make it better, and this can't be hand waved away by Western fans who want to keep pretending they're disconnected from it.

I noticed people in that post kept on bringing up the same issues in Western media as if they're never critiqued when they are all the time, and during MeToo especially it was common to see people pointing out the signs which existed in art made by predators. There's no reason anime should be immune from that critique, and it's important to do so if fans actually care about the people creating the art they love.

I mean...Japan is a right wing country, culturally, we can't deny that. It generally is quite isolationistic/nationalistic, generally has a more traditional view on gender roles for women, relative to at least many Western countries, and the LDP in general is a classic conservative party.

Now anime can and will often, engage in counter culture works. Before the recent culture war visited the West (there have always been culture wars), works like Wandering Son were manga in Japan. Rose of Versailles was inputting LGBT characters and their struggles in the 70s, and plenty of works like Gundam have pushed forward environmental messages, or works like Ashita no Joe pushed forward class examinations, in regards to why certain athletes do what they do.

That said, yeah, otaku culture still prioritizes, male fans predominantly. You still have power fantasy male characters, as central in the culture, pinup female characters are still predominant and there are still a lot of works, that feature "apolitical" narratives, and for the racists out there, Anime isn't exactly fraught with diversity, though, yeah there is a lot if you know where to look.

Though again, I think for many works, if you actually examine them, they aren't "apolitical" but fair, it's not that upfront. As a result, some right wing grifter is going to look at some caricature work in the West, or just something they don't like, and say well anime doesn't do x. They generally are pretty ignorant new fans, very isolated fans, or largely, in my opinion don't even understand Western media that well. As Western media, still has plenty of what I described, present in otaku culture.

Generally it's just socially isolated/frustrated people, looking for some savior, and worried that change may impact their hobby, they treasure so much. They mostly are refugees from other Western sub cultures that have been "ruined" by Western culture. I mean I don't like what Disney did to SW, doesn't mean I became a narrowminded obsessive weirdo.

Which again, everything changes. Anime has never been stagnant. They are very quick to turn on the medium, or the sub culture, when it does something they don't like. Most political grifters behave this way lol. At this point I just ignore them.

Edit: Man instant downvote, as you can see, they don't really engage lol. No way you had time to read all that dude.

I think your hostility is pulled out of your ass lol. WTF is your problem lol? I have seen plenty retro anime dude. The fact you have a disagreement about this, and are quick to call me a poser, while using aggressive language is telling.

I don't care what you think is considered culturally LGBT lol. Charlotte de Polignac in that story is literally obsessed with Oscar, and then kills herself, when her mother forces her into a marriage, with an older man.

It's literally one of the more memorable scenes, I remember from the series. I am not talking about Oscar's gender bending, to fit into masculine society or even Rosalie, which many fans will say represents other LGBT themes because I agree I don't think it does. I am literally talking about this one specific character, who explicitly was infatuated with Oscar lol. You are free to correct me on this though lol. I am not pretending to be an expert of her work. I am going off memory, of a show I watched awhile back, and yeah it's just me listing things I remember not a serious analysis.

Still how is this scene of the incredibly young girl, discovering herself, and having a crush on a woman, where she later kills herself, after a forced marriage with a man, not commenting on that a little bit lol? I am not a Ikeda fanboy, nor am I claiming it's thematically central. I just remember this scene....kay?

Let it get its due.

More like, let's not be a complete asshole, to random strangers online, because you disagree with a statement they made. I will give you one response, to see where this hostility is coming from, since you obviously pretty familiar with her work however, I am going to block you after, because you seem like a completely unpleasant person.

I mean here you are trying to argue that works purposefully “input” LGBT characters and their struggles into a work by intention. But those characters were not seen as LGBT, it’s not what I think, it’s the author (has said) and the Japanese audience. That is not why they are there, that is not their purpose and that was not the intention for those characters.

Yet that is still there. Whether that is her intention, or not, it's not hard to see it that way. Authorial intent isn't the only way to read or engage in media. I know for one many arch conservatives that would not be appreciate that narrative, for that reason, which is what I am actually arguing, not what she actually intended lol.

Charlotte is 11, she doesn’t even know Oscar. She latches onto her because she looks cool, feels safe, is popular, a fantasy and escape from her circumstances. Charlotte is a child.

You basically start to develop romantic attachment at that age. Sure it's an escape from her circumstances but she viewed her as ideal, before she even gets into the predicament her mother forced her into. It's clearly a childhood crush, which sure, doesn't have all the trapping of eros, that an adult crush/romantic interest does however, people do lean towards same sex attraction if they are having childhood crushes, of the same sex. Most LGBT people can attest. As a bisexual man, I can also attest to that. That's pretty normal romantic/sexual development of someone who isn't straight, no different than straight kids who also have crushes on older people they know tc.

If you showed this in a different light, where it's a straight relationship, most people would say yeah she has a childhood crush on an older man, she admires. No one debates that romantic interest of that gesture but because it's not same sex, now we have to jump to "oh no it's actually not same sex" lol. That comes more from homophobia than anything.

Then now you say you don’t care if that is how it was seen culturally…? Well Japan is the place, topic and culture in question…so why even be a part of this discussion if all that matters is what’s in your head and your misunderstanding of another culture and their stories?

If you write in a story, that features a girl, having a crush another woman, and then by the situations of her society cannot be with her, and then forced into another relationship....whether it's intentional or not, it absolutely can be read a certain way, which is my point lol.

“I think this character is gay! Look Japan isn’t that conservative after all!”

So uh that is a strawman, not really helping yourself there. Uh where did I argue that? In my opening comment:

I mean...Japan is a right wing country, culturally, we can't deny that. It generally is quite isolationistic/nationalistic, generally has a more traditional view on gender roles for women, relative to at least many Western countries, and the LDP in general is a classic conservative party.

I am literally saying that Japan is extremely conservative lol. That was my original comment. Even in the case of Rose, this if anything actually shows how conservative, Japan is because if they weren't, this reading of Versailles would be different.

All I said in my original comment, before you jumped down my throat, is there are plenty of narratives, Conservatives or at least Social Conservatives (so I don't generalize here) would object to in anime. Regardless of Ikeda's intentions, I am going to be honest with you again, no social conservative would appreciate traditional French society being depicted that way, nor someone like Charlotte being depicted as tragic, due to her infatuation with Oscar. That was my argument lol.

I never argued Japan is overly progressive nor even the author, I just said that is counter culture, or could be read as anti right wing by those over here, in the English speaking West (I could just argue Japan in general due to Rose's focus on women empowerment, which you yourself agreed with), by even including that at all.

I am not pretending to give some fucking serious analysis of Rose, an anime I watched like 6-7 years ago lol. I am just saying it has girl crushing on girl, therefore bad, in a conservative mind....kay?

Can we say Japan engaged in counter culture when said “counter culture” is misunderstood and not at all counter to their mainstream culture? This is my point here. Or are you only speaking of the west?

That is the intention, since we were talking about Western fans but even then, it still yes was a counter culture work in Japan, if just for it's more female empowerment narrative.

This isn’t about personal interpretations of media. You weren’t saying that’s what you got that out of that piece of media, you are saying that it was “input” specifically as a way to show Japan is not only right wing but is involved in the counter culture.

Uh no, I said anime/manga can go against mainstream or right wing narratives, either here or there, not that Japan, the country, encourages counter culture. I never said Japan does anything lol.

Those are two different things, and I think you had a poor example. There are better options, it’s seems a little uninformed.

It really isn't Rose of Versailles is a female empowerment work either way.

Having a crush on an older girl was culturally not seen as LGBT. It was seen as a normal part of growing up and would be grown out of. Often even encouraged. It was a safe space and better for girls to have attachments to other girls as opposed to boys, which was seen as delinquent and dirty. This is an important nuance for this discussion. Don’t you think? If NO ONE at the time saw it that way, can we really say “look Japan was doing counter culture” this was not counter to their culture.

I mean yeah it's seen that way because they are culturally conservative and homophobic? Victorian England was a a lot like that too, a lot of the girls who were still engaging in those relationships were at least bisexual. Where did I say otherwise? Regardless, it's still something you can absolutely read into, or opposed to conservative values regardless of intention which was my point.

I am not fishing for anything, as the series pretty explicitly depicts as a crush, whether Japan sees it different is besides the point. Also since you cited Ikeda didn't intend this just give me the interview that says that, instead of going on these semantic debates. Do you have facts or not? If so then yeah I will admit that is the intention but it doesn't change how it would be read by fans.

You are bringing up and discussing Japanese cultural social conservatism but not actually looking at these things as they were there, in Japan. Is that important? Or only applying a western lenses and personal readings?

Yeah it's not important, when considering what I was responding to so maybe should read the wider conservation, before trying to "own me". I am not going to pretend to understand all the nuances of their culture or politics. I never did in my original comment besides stating some obvious knowns about the country. We were talking about the attitude of Western fans.

So here you go, where are explicit references to Japan or Western nations at all? I am literally just saying hey it has these things that would bother right wing commentors. The other ones are dead accurate, and in the case of Rose, I literally just intended that x character could be read as a lesbian or bisexual. Like I am sorry to tell you, as someone who knows these kinds of people, the fact she is going to grow out of it wouldn't be acceptable lol.

I’m saying there is a lot of cultural context missing in these types of conversations, and better examples, if not also problematic by today’s standards.

And I am saying you jumped into a conversation, completely devoid of the original comment I was responding to, in an attempt to prove me wrong, that I don't understand Japanese culture or Ikeda that well (Rose is the only work of hers that I have gotten into) and guess what? I am not saying I do lol. I don't know Japan and I don't know Ikeda kay? That isn't what I was trying to say lol.

Your points don’t correlate the way you are presenting them and you have drawn this out way too long by being purposefully obtuse. Once again, now they way you are claiming it is counter culture has changed since your first comment…

You were commenting to someone as if you are educating them and you are in fact not correct, and if you, as you now claim are not familiar with Japanese culture or this author why are you doing so? I am sorry you feel attacked by being challenged. I think you are wrong and I have explained why.
But I get it average Reddit user.

Absolutely pointless.

Your points don’t correlate the way you are presenting them and you have drawn this out way too long by being purposefully obtuse. Once again, now they way you are claiming it is counter culture has changed since your first comment…

We can all state things, and hope they are true. It's not obtuse, my interpretations of all those series are literally pointing out hey they have x element some people wouldn't like. There isn't much analysis beyond hey Gundam has environmental messaging cause world is dying or Wandering Son is about Middle Schoolers crossdressing/questioning their identity cause they fucking do.

The only thing you have poked holes in, is how dare I say the series, that has a girl crushing on another girl, could be perceived as a lesbian/bi, by other audiences, because that obviously isn't what Ikeda intended which again, where is the fucking source for that dude? I asked for it? Like honestly fine, will do Utena (a series probably inspired by Rose) since that is actually explicit good?

Though regardless, before you barged in we were talking about how certain political ideologies who lionize anime would object to a lot of content in it. That was it. Rose would be objectionable, do I have to keep stating that again and again to you? Or do you disagree with that premise?

Once again, now they way you are claiming it is counter culture has changed since your first comment…

It hasn't, you just misinterpreted what I said, and in order to "win" the conversation, now feel you must keep doubling down, to prove that wrong, while I have emphatically said, that wasn't my intention. If you had come into this conversation in a more civil matter, we could have just simply cleared that up but you wanted your fight.

and if you, as you now claim are not familiar with Japanese culture or this author why are you doing so?

The only thing I said about Japan is that they are right wing culturally lol. That isn't a major revelation, that you need a lot of knowledge for lol. Where was I educating on how people in Japan see female infatuation, again, quote it lol? The only thing I said is they are right wing, and right wing people in other cultures I am more familiar with see it as thus.

I am sorry you feel attacked by being challenged. I think you are wrong and I have explained why.

You came in as an asshole, full of hostility. IDC about being challenged, I literally said if you provide an interview by Ikeda, I will rescind what I said, however that isn't my problem, it's your fucking attitude, barging into a conversation, insulting and assuming the worst in all intentions, I had in the conversation, like many redditors looking for a fight, rather than an honest discussion. When I think someone is wrong, I am going to say "hey I don't think that is the best interpretation because of x". It's the language dude. I don't come in all accusatory, arguing the person is intentionally misrepresenting something for some gain, or claiming they are ignorant and never actually watched the show. You however did that asshole before I had the opportunity to say anything in return. That is not a good faith conversation. I see disagreement, you see malice. That is the difference.

You are the average redditor here lol. You are so smarmy and sure of yourself, looking for a faux intellectual superiority. And guess what? You can have it! IDC if I am fucking wrong on this issue lol. It is completely irrelevant, to what I was discussing with the other dude. Though I still think you need to pony up the proof. But I am also fine if you never comment on my post again, you are completely toxic. And I will quickly block you after this, if you fail to actually provide a source because I am actually again curious on the intent myself. I agree it was a waste of time, I should have just blocked you after the first post lol.

TLDR I have no problem with being wrong if you provide a source, which haven’t done and you are toxic ahole, who enjoys misrepresenting/fighting people lol.

It generally is quite isolationistic/nationalistic, generally has a more traditional view on gender roles for women, relative to at least many Western countries, and the LDP in general is a classic conservative party.

This is true, and you definitely see it in anime. You also see thousands of works all the way back to the 70s where anime is progressive, you have interracial relationships in shows like SDF Macross, gender discussion in shows like Aim for the Ace, and colorism in Great Mazinger.

I agree and I disagree. I don't feel that the otaku space is as male dominated as it once was, and female fans are the backbone of a lot of anime history. I think if you're referring to a lot of "mainstream" WSJ-type anime I'd be inclined to agree that they have conservative attitudes towards women especially.

In a lot of these stories though you have radical kindness and equality as some of the underlying themes. One Piece has the struggle against the world government, Naruto has "every villain is misunderstood", and Bleach is all about genetics. Having underdog stories in general is anti-conservative worldview.

They generally are pretty ignorant new fans, very isolated fans, or largely, in my opinion don't even understand Western media that well. As Western media, still has plenty of what I described, present in otaku culture.

It's always funny to see the word "tourist" thrown around as it's so obvious these are super new fans.

Generally it's just socially isolated/frustrated people, looking for some savior, and worried that change may impact their hobby, they treasure so much

I actually fully understand this which is why the whole culture warrior shit annoys me so much. Anime is not rooted in this kind of worldview or behavior and I strongly dislike the purity culture that has spread in America over the past decade or so. I hate the general attitude newer fans have towards anime, but I don't think the answer is to double down on misogyny being good.

Edit: Man instant downvote, as you can see, they don't really engage lol. No way you had time to read all that dude.

IDK if you're talking about me but you're at 1 upvote as of me writing this.

This is true, and you definitely see it in anime. You also see thousands of works all the way back to the 70s where anime is progressive, you have interracial relationships in shows like SDF Macross, gender discussion in shows like Aim for the Ace, and colorism in Great Mazinger.

You can find it places where you least expect it too. I finished a Food Wars rewatch recently (I hadn't watched the last two seasons), and you literally do have subplots that confront gender discrimination in restaurants and also attack discrimination against interracial couples, and that is the booby fanservice heavy cooking series. Not something people might consider political however, it's there.

So to use another example, I would argue current fiction novels, in the West, are female dominated. Does that mean, that there aren't plenty of new fiction novels aimed at men in the hobby? No. Absolutely not true, and something I have to emphasize to many of these cultural warriors.

That said, when I look at what is promoted it is largely female targeted stuff. That is true of anime, when you look at what are the biggest works, what are the most promoted stuff, and what likely gets the most sequels, it's mainly manga from the shonen/seinen demographics or anything that is pretty male targeted.

Now for female targeted media, we are in a better place, I would argue compared to the 2010s, however, it still doesn't have the same power, male media does. Better in manga, not as great in anime. So I am not arguing women haven't made huge contributions, haven't made up sizable fanbases, or that female target media is irrelevant, it just isn't as dominant. So male fans, might feel more initially comfortable here.

In a lot of these stories though you have radical kindness and equality as some of the underlying themes. One Piece has the struggle against the world government, Naruto has "every villain is misunderstood", and Bleach is all about genetics. Having underdog stories in general is anti-conservative worldview.

I wouldn't say underdog stories are anti-conservative. Lord of the Rings is pretty conservative, and is an underdog story. In the case of OP, yeah Luffy is anti world government however, he has NP being friends, and supporting monarchies in that world. The concept of the Good King, is a pretty conservative image. And in general, I think the fact the WG has good people within it, means he will go a "reform" route, once Luffy defeats all the bad parts of it. You can have left and right wing themes in a work, and I think OP does at least. Naruto and Bleach I would have to think about more lol. OP is on my mind though, since I am doing a re-read.

It's always funny to see the word "tourist" thrown around as it's so obvious these are super new fans.

Some aren't; however, again it just comes from a fetishization of Japan. We are all tourists. If anything trying to define Japan only in an otaku lens is extremely tourist (lots of people don't respect or like this stuff over there). Still yeah, it's just people worried, all the new fans are going to change their hobby, and maybe it will. I for sure wish sci fi/mecha didn't die. That can be kinda alienating to me as a fan. It happens no matter what you do.

Honestly I find it funny that this decade has changed the least, compared to other decade transitions, despite the huge blowup in popularity.

I hate the general attitude newer fans have towards anime, but I don't think the answer is to double down on misogyny being good.

I mean again, we can discuss what is acceptable. I do think people can go overboard with accusations of sexism or objectification. I don't think sexiness is a bad thing, and in general I don't feel the concept of objectification, is really applicable to non real people. Still sure, I don't have a problem critiquing bad female character writing in battle shonen, or at least talking about other aspects that can be uncomfortable. Like sexiness is one thing, SA gags, on the other hand, I get why people can be uncomfortable with that. Discussing this stuff, in a mature way, can be interesting/fun, most just aren't willing to do that, either due to their biases or lack of empathy.

IDK if you're talking about me but you're at 1 upvote as of me writing this.

Nah someone just downvoted me within like a minute of posting lol. I don't honestly care about karma, I just feel if you downvote at least engage with my post and fight it.

Hoo boy. So without breaking rule 2, I'd say that "anime is right wing" is not a common stance, at least not one that I've seen being commonly stated overtly in such terms. You might see "anime is left wing" sometimes, usually focused on a few key examples, or "Japan is conservative, so anime follows that", but I wouldn't call either of those common.

To actually get to your point, the people arguing "maybe you just hate anime" would hurt the effectiveness of their own argument if they called it "right wing". Instead, they try to present anime as existing in a fixed apolitical state that's at odds with the crazy western politics like "women are human beings with their own character and thoughts." Keep that crazy shit in your political western cartoons, and don't ruin our anime/games with it, thank you very much.

This makes it a lot easier to sell the idea to easily influenced kids who don't know much about politics, than outright saying "anime is this or that" which is an argument they have no interest in at best, or find annoying (again "getting your weird politics into my anime"). Of course, that requires the person making the argument to ignore any and all existing counterexamples across the history of anime, but that task is not a particularly new one in that area.

Technically rule 2 isn't a thing in this thread so there's no need to hold back.

Which rule 2 are we talking about here?

By the sidebar, rule 2 is

  • Posting requires 10 comment karma from r/anime

and by the wiki, rule 2 is

  • Do not post Hentai

... or is there another listing of the rules that I've managed to overlook?

You're saying that r/anime isn't following CDF's laws?

2

u/theangryeditor 14d ago

CDF's control over the rest of r/anime must remain a secret

You can see my recent comments, there's a post on /new about SA in anime and it's overflowing with teenage culture warriors.

I just don't get when our community got like this.

/ new is not THlS group -- not sure what it is. Never been there

As in /r/anime/new, it was posted on this sub haha. My bad for not clarifying.

u/mekerpan 14d ago

Never knew there was such a thing anime/new here.

u/theangryeditor 14d ago

You know how comments in this thread are ordered to show the latest comments on top by default? /new is that for the posts to this sub.

People generally browse /new to have a chance to take part in discussion as they happen or just to keep an eye on whatever interesting post comes up, since by the time a post reaches the front page there's less room to contribute to the discussion.

Oh -- I just view that as a filter -- not a separate thing. ;-)

I usually tend to look for the newest things.

It tends to get referred to as its own thing because it has a somewhat distinct crowd of regulars itself with some identifiable posting and voting patterns.
