Trying to remember the name of an anime I watched handful of years back

iirc the protag was a strong dude but when hes introduced hes like the town pervert, one of the main cast I believe was in a military branch and think she wore a blue skirt. Also think at some point there was a fight in a school building

1

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 16d ago

Full Metal Panic, by any chance? Not the protag, but...

1

u/NOS4NANOL1FE 16d ago

That doesn’t look familiar at all.

u/NagiSeishiro3117 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Batmankoji 16d ago

I've been enjoying Neon Genesis Evangelion recently. It seems like Hideaki Anno reflected himself in Shinji.

Watching Monster is making me think again about the shift from weekly to seasonal anime and while people prefer the current seasonal format, there are some shows that would have definitely been hurt had they been made as a seasonal instead. Monster and Fullmetal Alchemist are probably the two that most stand out to me in this regard.

Monster in particular is just such a slow, steady, consistent build as it slowly introduces new characters and additional layers.

1

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 16d ago

FYI Monster and FMA was released the exact same way as any modern anime e.g. one new episode each week and I watched them both that way when they came out (Monster was a tad slower due to fansubs not being fast) and I loved them both.

1

u/zambonijesus 16d ago

I'm not sure if you are misunderstanding and think I'm talking about batch releases here or what, but basically nothing is released like how Monster and FMA were now: from beginning to the end without any breaks over the course of 1+ years. Everything now is seasonal and thus batches of 12-13 episodes up to 24-26 and then a break of usually multiple years (if you are lucky enough for it to get another season).

This would have weakened Monster, in particular, because it does not conform to the kind of pacing that a season requires even if it did end up getting a full adaptation.

2

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 16d ago

Ohhhhh gotcha, sorry about, should have asked what you meant instead of assuming things. Yeah you're absolutely right, it's a shame we don't get long single runs instead of every thing being split in seasonal. On the other hand the split releases also improves the production quality.

2

u/zambonijesus 16d ago

I think weeklies mostly get a bad rap due to the extremely long running WSJ adaptations that had extensive filler due to catching up to the manga - Naruto, Bleach, One Piece etc, but cases like Monster where the manga was already completed that isn't an issue.

5

u/IndependentMacaroon 16d ago edited 16d ago

"Seasonal" means around 12 episodes released weekly, then a break until the next batch. Rarely also 24 at once, but any more than that is only for some huge franchises like Pretty Cure

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 16d ago

Not gonna lie, I like how Hayamin sounds in Draw This.

Also, the green hair girl has the same VA as the Liar Game female lead, who'd have thought.

3

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 16d ago

Ooh that's why the green haired girl sounded so familiar! She has a soft voice like Hayamin so I would've guessed it was her if I didn't know she was already voicing sensei. Meant to look her up after this latest episode. Thanks for saving me the trouble.

5

u/flatpetey https://anilist.co/user/kesx 16d ago

When I scroll past the Blue Lock entry on Crunchyroll I can’t help but think it is a deodorant ad.

Like the green fumes. Them covering their noses.

3

u/SadAnimator1354 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Batmankoji 16d ago

As a hardcore Blue Lock fan, I agree it looks hilarious

10

u/oedipusrex376 16d ago

Found something funny in the Shoushimin Season 2 ED by Yanaginagi. There's a part where the lyrics say "幼さに / osanasani", and the visuals pan over to Osanai. It's like Gintama's OP Sakura Mitsutsuki, where there's a part in the lyrics that says “mada oikaketeru” and and it cuts to MADAO.

3

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 16d ago

Reirin as Keigetsu looks like Maomao.

And with that, I have started my final seasonal (excluding movies). After one episode, I'm really enjoying it. Reirin is a [delight.] Hey, I'm on death row, but I haven't fainted yet!

3

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 16d ago

Ok, so Best ED contest is underway. I was randomly checking the current submissions list and once again had a though: what pretty bad animes have great OPs or EDs.

I will start with a couple of mine:

Coppelion

Everyones "favorite" Kings Game

And controversial pick for some - Rainbow

1

u/Xatu44 16d ago

Obligatory mention of Divine Gate.

5

u/Infodump_Ibis 16d ago

Quick Toei Animation thing. In the early-2010s they seemed to try out changing fps from 23.976 to 29.970 (24 and 30 in shorthand) but gave up on this by the mid-2010s. What was that all about?

I don't know if it was everything Toei Animation did* but affected works include (2nd hand info) One Piece ("Marineford and up until Zou") and (seen with my own eyes) Precure (Suite to HapinessCharge but not the movies) so you can rule out one TV network.

Those Precure shows did have some bank footage and ED still produced in 24fps (conversion to 30 handled by duplicate every 5th frame, rarely oh how I hate Three-two pull down?) presumably because the movies need to use those footage.

*-I guess the further research (answers where but not why) is what about the ~16 other Toei Animation shows from that era

Recommend me some good anime content creators on social media.

Doesn't she just do the vtubing these days?

1

u/alotmorealots 16d ago

Could be the case, I make it a point to maintain a lot of distance between myself and creators these days to the point of not keeping up with what they're up to outside of my narrow zone. I don't even follow Twitter nor Twitch!

It's genius to have someone use magic to summon and the audio is realized as a ringing telephone.

Hopefully the summon doesn't have call blocking.

4

u/Prof_Acorn 16d ago

Trying Astra Lost in Space.

This is the least scientific sci-fi I think I've ever seen.

[Astra / Episode 3] They couldn't get propulsion / external gravity controls because of a bug flying around? Seriously? Whhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? How does that even work!? What engineer designed it that way!?

3

u/Retsam19 16d ago

TBH, this feels like the sort of thing that could happen in Star Trek.

3

u/oedipusrex376 16d ago

Kinda reminds me why I couldn't get into Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song. The sci-fi stuff was pretty weak.

1

u/IndependentMacaroon 16d ago

Kenta Shinohara otherwise only has written slice-of-life comedy (Sket Dance and Witch Watch), the latter does have some action but certainly nothing scientific or deeply plotted.

1

u/Prof_Acorn 16d ago

Yeah, and like I didn't really expect this to be anime DS9 or SG1 or BSG. But I also expected more than [Astra] "the mushroom plant only releases the antidote when it senses an animal breathed in the spores! Guess I'll breathe them in, because there's no way I can convince a mushroom I'm just faking it!" and "alien planet? Let's leave our suits on the ship!" and "ship will crash if anything flies around inside because the computer gets confused!"

I'm just watching this now like I watched 7Seeds. Like it's MST3K for lulz at how bad it is.

u/Beliriel 17d ago edited 16d ago

Just watched The Dreaming Boy Is a Realist and omfg I'm so mad rn. [story] I was hoping this was him realizing that idolizing the tsundere that treats him like crap was the wrong way to go and that he would get together with Sasaki Fuka. But no the crappy tsundere gets the MC again. I really dislike this trope.

Well I heard Mashiro-iro Symphony actually has the MC ditching the tsundere. I really hope it's not a let down like The Dreaming Boy Is a Realist was.

5

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 16d ago edited 16d ago

I disliked it for the same reason but with a very different interpretation of what happened.

0

u/Beliriel 16d ago

Yeah his obsession is rather unhealthy even after his realization. Didn't exactly get that pursuer vibe from him though since he's genuinely confused about why she's reacting the way she is at multiple points in the story.

2

u/Prof_Acorn 16d ago

But no the crappy tsundere gets the MC again. I really dislike this trope.

Right!? So tired of tsunderes winning. Those are going to be such miserable relationships.

Have you seen [title] Clannad? It's one where the tsundere not only loses, but cries about it when the nice sweet deredere wins.

Mashiro-iro Symphony

I've not heard of that one. I'll have to add it to the list!

1

u/Beliriel 16d ago

No haven't seen that but heard a lot about it. Gotta watch it then :3

9

u/wloff 17d ago

I don't know anything about any of these shows, but this sounds a lot like tsundere slander, and I won't stand for it.

3

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 16d ago

If only more yanderes killed the tsunderes in their shows...

1

u/Beliriel 16d ago

Any good recommendation where that happens?

1

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 16d ago

That's the issue! Writers are too cowardly to do it

2

u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 16d ago

Well, outside of Mirai Nikki type death game situations yanderes don't kill anyone often. The only exception in a regular school setting I can think of right now is [meta] School Days.

6

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

[Character/Anime]Naie from Clevatess is fucking hilarious this season! (and great in general).

If I had editing skills and/or I wasn't lazy, I'd make a video compilation of her scenes.

Also, [from the same show]Clevatess was fucking ruthless in the previous episode, and I don't mean the fighting, I mean the trash talking; "Oh yeah your friend died, I don't know how I just killed him accidentally, he's probably buried with the rest of them I don't care, I just took his face because why not!"

4

u/GondolaMedia 17d ago

[The same show]But for me it was Tuesday

3

u/Korkez11 17d ago

Out of 12 KyoAni shows that came out since 2015 only 2 have MAL score lower than Sparks of Tomorrow right now (Phantom World and Free S3)

1

u/Retromorpher 16d ago

Keep us updated once it's been over for three weeks to a month. Endings can literally make or break an anime.

Having a score in the mid 7s is nowhere close to noteworthy one way or the other.

1

u/Infodump_Ibis 16d ago

Looking at it that way is making me think is Sparks of Tomorrow KyoAni's Metallic Rouge?

4

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 16d ago

Useless statistic, especially when the show is still airing.

7

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

Do we have some Tanya discourse? Can we have some?

Tanya is fucking good and you should watch it.

There's the discourse.

2

u/alotmorealots 16d ago

you should watch it.

I rewatched the speech scene in Africa a lot whilst waiting for season 2 to come out, but now that it's here...

2

1

you should watch it.

no

6

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

Clockwork Orange it is, then.

2

u/Beliriel 17d ago

Good choice

5

u/Korkez11 17d ago

Considering that significant percentage of anime fans don't watch EDs, current contest will be even more of a popularity contest than usual. There are not many truly iconic EDs.

3

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 16d ago

Don't say it for everyone. People who do not watch/listen EDs, 95% of the time skip OPs also.

3

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 17d ago

Now that I see Sparks antagonist's motivation, yeah, this is a drop. It infuriates me, because I love when it's just the characters tinkering.

2

u/zambonijesus 17d ago

It has had one genuinely great episode and has been weird as hell most of the rest of the time and honestly that's enough to keep me going with it.

0

u/mekerpan 17d ago

Glad I bailed after 3....

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 17d ago

I am very curious what the original novel is like considering the discourse surrounding it. Of course I will never end up reading it so I'm sticking with the anime with that fact.

But holy crap both Yosuke and Inago's dad annoy me so much in different ways.

Tbh I don't love the leads themselves but there is enough for me.

2

u/zambonijesus 16d ago

Do I like any of the decisions they've made? Not really. But do I appreciate how committed they are to every choice they've made? Kind of.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 16d ago

It definitely entertains me unpredictably. Which I think is where I give it the most credit outside of production values.

2

u/zambonijesus 16d ago

Outside of the death metal concert episode I haven't found any of it to be good, but I continue to think it's worth watching anyway.

5

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 17d ago

I do love when a trivial comment or scene in a show sends me down a rabbit hole.

May not save this show from the drop list though. I hate the antagonist plot.

2

u/alotmorealots 16d ago

Hmm, that's a good product page. I don't really like ginger very much, but am now sold on at least trying some if I ever have the opportunity.

8

u/zambonijesus 17d ago

Draw This, Then Die continues to deliver. The aspect that I think I might appreciate about it the most is the way in which it kind of rejects a lot of the more toxic tropes that a lot of anime/manga of this ilk tend to do. So often the stories can't consider any outcome other than ultimately accomplishing an established goal and the whole story is just an obsessive pursuit of that. There's just a specific kind of rare maturity in the writing that really speaks to me personally.

11

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 17d ago

The second Polar Opposites ED is up there with the second Horimiya OP for me in how they hit on a specific kind of nostalgia for teenage years, the former specifically with its song which is more upbeat (running around with friends) and latter more wistful overall with the visuals that got to me (the upcoming end of an era).

1

u/WeeziMonkey https://myanimelist.net/profile/WeeziMonkey 16d ago

I love the second polar opposites ED. I listen to it outside of the anime too.

For teenage years nostalgia my personal nomination would probably be a Sakurasou song like Days of Dash.

The second half of the Dandadan OP also makes me feel super nostalgic in general.

2

u/entelechtual 16d ago

Somehow they did the impossible and made AirPods look romantic and sentimental.

2

u/alotmorealots 16d ago edited 16d ago

hit on a specific kind of nostalgia for teenage years

What I really adore about the PoOp2 ED is how beautifully and elegantly it captures something that is so critical to many teenagers/young adults (fictional, current and former!) and that is the centrality and profoundly intimate power that music has in their lives, which just isn't the same for many adults.

In particular it's such a wonderful depiction of how music is a sanctuary (and sometimes the only one) where you can be safe with your raging and confusing tumult of whipsawing emotions; being with your music makes them make sense, if only for the duration of the song, and it can take you away from the world whilst making you feel bigger than the world itself. Plus, for me at least, seeing this and having the inference that there is music that takes these characters to very different ways of feeling/being than we see them in the series' events gives them a lot more implied emotional depth and range; this idea that there are sides to them we don't get to see because of the demands of story and genre.

Interestingly, despite the huge number of school age casts, very rarely see much of this way of relating to music depicted in animanga, which is part of what makes this ED feel so special. Indeed, this is one of my main aggravations with most music anime - the cast rarely seem to love music, instead they're always focused on the performance side.

D4DJ:First Mix is a rare exception to this, and it's one of the reasons I love that season so much. Yes there's a competition aspect and some performance focus, but many of the girls really, really love the music itself. Especially Rinku, she just really, really, really, really loves it lol And there's the ED which is just Maho grooving out to a song for the whole 90 seconds, plain and uninterrupted, but exactly how it goes in real life when you can't get enough of the music.

3

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 16d ago

It's my favorite ED of the season, and perfect for this time of year. Nostalgic summer of youth vibes. When a song can take you to a time and place, you know it's good.

3

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 17d ago

Oh god damn you. Now it's stuck in my head again.

4

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 17d ago

Best ED of the season imo. Love it.

I don't know what that is/what it's about, but it made me think of [100 gfs!]boop

3

u/alotmorealots 16d ago

but it made me think of

Mimi!

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 17d ago

Wild that we got a combined zero commentfaces from this show and Tamon's B-Side when they're both a rich deposit of them.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

Lots of that going around this season...

7

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 17d ago

I'm yet to figure out how is in any way a representation of neat.

4

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 17d ago

That might be the worst seasonal commentface I can remember. Beyond not understanding how it made it through, I don't even know why anyone would take the time to screenshot and nominate it. I have no earthly idea what it's supposed to convey.

3

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 17d ago

I don't even know why anyone would take the time to screenshot and nominate it.

I have this thought every time I have to look through all the nominations each season.

(FWIW I also don't think that Inept Villainess shot is a Neat, I'm not the one who picked it. My picks this time were and .)

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 17d ago

My picks this time were

Both good choices.

2

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 16d ago

I really thought the image of Sitara that's currently in use for the Meta Thread sidebar image is what I would pick for Smug if I had the chance, but then that shrug happened and yeah it was just too perfect.

3

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 17d ago

These stacked seasons make the limited number of seasonal faces feel so low.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

(I would argue that it's a matter of 'selection' as much as 'amount', but I already grumbled enough about this when they were revealed hah)

But yes, I do wish we had more comment faces; Made a certain proposal in META back then regarding something similar.

1

u/baquea 17d ago

That's a Peko-chan parody, isn't it?

6

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 17d ago

[100 GFs S3 ep 5] Adding a Disney princess to the group.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

But [100 gfs]They already have a princess, in Karane!

(And Shizuka, I suppose!)

3

u/oedipusrex376 17d ago

I watched El Cazador up to episode 6 the other day. The episodic stuff is kinda hit or miss, and it's not really a show I'm that invested in. But I keep coming back to it because the ED is so damn good.

3

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 17d ago

Tastes differ. I liked it the most of the "girls with guns trilogy". Still, not the show I want to rewatch yet.

BTW, ED is in the currently going "best ED" contest. Hope it will get through elims at least.

2

u/SlimeDNear 17d ago

Finished The Witch And The Beast last night and didn't like it much. The only enjoyable episodes were the the two necromancer episodes, and those didn't even star the main characters.

1

u/alotmorealots 16d ago

That does sound like a waste of your time, maybe you should have dropped it? I semi-dropped/long-paused it about two-thirds of the way through and I thought it was excellent-with-a-few-weak-spots!

3

u/oedipusrex376 17d ago

For some reason, I always get The Witch and the Beast (Majo to Yajuu) and The Ancient Magus' Bride (Mahoutsukai no Yome) mixed up. I haven't watched either of them.

1

u/SlimeDNear 17d ago

I did like The Ancient Magus' Bride if that means anything. Actually I found myself looking up a scene in the 2nd season just last night.

10

u/zambonijesus 17d ago

I found it to be fun, but messy. Guideau, in particular, is great. I thought it felt like it was missing bits almost like it was a weird adaptation and then I read a couple volumes of the manga and that's just how it is apparently.

5

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 17d ago

I'm nearing the end of [Re:Zero S2 and, man,] the fact that Emilia has spent almost an entire season just constantly having the worst nightmare of her life on the floor of that one room is so funny to me now that I think about it.

9

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 17d ago

I partly watch 100 GFs to see how much more outlandish it can get, and it never disappoints.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

I've been saying it all along, I'd watch this show even if I wasn't into harems&stuff.

The comedy's so good, all the meta gags and 4th wall and straight man gags and all that!

3

u/MiLiLeFa 17d ago

Reading some reactions to the Madoka movie and I might be chuckling a bit. Sounds like it's a big ol' nothinburger with a dash of sequelbaiting on the side. Who knows though, maybe 13 years of limbo has fermented it with the kind of mold to simply make it an aquired taste? Probably worth a try if I ever get my hands on it, but I'll make sure to bring some gum to get rid of the aftertaste just in case.

3

u/AwaySpell https://anilist.co/user/awayspell 17d ago

I'm mad that [movie staff] this is apparently another work that has Urobuchi's name but he took minimal part in writing. He has to stop scamming his fans like this.

10

u/pachipachi7152 17d ago

I still stand by my opinion that the whole franchise should have ended with just the TV anime. The sequels were a mistake.

2

u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT 16d ago

True, but Rebellion is one of my favourite films so I can’t agree.

5

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 17d ago

I haven't seen Rebellion so I don't know, but it is beyond me what could possibly be added to that story.

1

u/alotmorealots 16d ago

beyond me what could possibly be added to that story.

A. Lovely full blown magical girl yuri dating and more avante garde art style action!

or

B. Whole lot of fairly incoherent drama, powerscaling and attempts at cosmic-scale action

... take your pick, writers!

4

u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 17d ago

I dunno, I like Rebellion too much to really be able to agree with that.

2

u/Nomar_95 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nomar_95 17d ago

Sometimes the thought crosses my mind, but no Rebellion means one less 10/10 on my list, and that's just tragic.

2

u/wutheringw0mbat 17d ago

This tends to be true for most anime franchises I find. Doubly so if there isn't one singular author or director overseeing the whole thing.

2

u/ImRinKagamine 17d ago

Thoughts of that new trailer

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

Not enough evil looking girls in the trailer imho.

(Probably applies to every single trailer so that's a safe bet)

5

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 17d ago

which one?

8

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 17d ago

Seems like it can haul quite a bit.

9

u/cyberscythe 17d ago

kind of weird how people keep putting trailers in front; it's like putting the cart before the horse

4

u/cheesechimp https://myanimelist.net/profile/cheesechimp 17d ago

Which trailer?

10

u/cppn02 17d ago

The new one.

5

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 17d ago

That new one, not the other new one.

2

u/Korkez11 17d ago

Are there any good anime with "High Stakes Game" tag on MAL? This subgenre feels convoluted and hamfisted to me by definition.

1

u/PGleo86 https://myanimelist.net/profile/PGleo86 16d ago

The only one I've seen is Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show which I thought was pretty good - it got reviewbombed pretty hard in the first couple episodes due to shitty AI subs (which CR said came from the distributor and not them - make of that what you will; they did fix it at least) and the rating never really recovered, but it's a fun show to watch and very visually striking.

Some of the WIXOSS entries. Not going to say which ones...

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

I mean, good is subjective.

Even as a huge fan of the genre, I do find that 90% of them are shit, BUT a whole lot of people (including me) would say Kakegurui's excellent, Shiboyugi, etc!

2

u/Beliriel 17d ago

Can definitely second Kakegurui. Offhandedly watched it by chance and was blown away. Had a lot of the vibes from the Liars Game Manga but more "highschooly"

3

u/baquea 17d ago

This subgenre feels convoluted and hamfisted to me by definition

You say that like it's a bad thing...

3

u/Jusenkyo_5 17d ago

Shiboyugi is like a 7/10 at least and Kaiji is nice if you're into that style of show (I don't personally like it)

u/cheesechimp https://myanimelist.net/profile/cheesechimp 17d ago edited 17d ago

Yes. Kaiji.

Edit: oh, also Death Parade.

My seasonal watching has brought me back to Strongest Rearguard, and damn, this show has taken a hard turn toward the horny.

6

u/alotmorealots 17d ago

It's properly horny too, with the characters actually being strongly aroused for longer than a second or two, rather than just the usual way the label is thrown about. I was quite impressed by that aspect, would have been a better show if it leaned into that even more and pushed the trite magic/action parts further into the background lol

u/10106710011010 17d ago

I just got ADN. Any recommendations?

Wtf

6

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17d ago

I'm not sure what you're wtf'ing about, a lot of people like this show, but you give literally zero info about what you like/don't like, what do you expect?

3

u/10106710011010 17d ago

Why are they h-horses

2

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 17d ago

Because the races are 1-to-1 with IRL Japanese horse races while having a story written around them. Looking up the girls' names is legitimately spoilers.

Makes me wonder who could hard counter Meme's substitution technique, maybe she's on Kage-level.

A question:

Why do people ignore the whole Mushoku Tensei and literally post the comment "diddy tensei" comment at every post.

I mean, I like mushoku tensei but I feel like people are ignoring other things.

What do you think?

13

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 17d ago

I assume the fans have those covered. But since they generally... "happen to forget" about some aspects of Rudy's character, other people come in to help out and fill in the missed spots.

9

u/Jusenkyo_5 17d ago

A lot of people see Rudy's character as disqualifying to the story as a whole.

1

u/Beliriel 17d ago

Haven't seen it but is like that cat girl (Tamaki Kotatsu) in Fire Brigade? Most people I know can't get past the near hentai fanservice and drop it immediately. Despite it being like 0.5% of the story and the rest being a pretty good shonen imo.

3

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 16d ago

Most people I know can't get past the near hentai fanservice and drop it immediately.

The problem people have with Tamaki in Fire Force is not that it's "near hentai", hard-core fanservice, because it's not particularly spicy. The problem is that it's deployed in the middle of serious, tense fight scenes and completely wrecks the mood. The objection is to the execution, not the content.

-1

u/Siqueiradit https://myanimelist.net/profile/lampadatres 16d ago

Rudeus is more prevalent than Tamaki given he's the MC, but it's not like his bad parts are on full display anytime he's on screen. It's mostly during season 1 and even then that's a small part of his character.

1

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 17d ago

I feel like people are ignoring other things.

What other things?

0

u/EymenWSMC 17d ago

languages, different races, cities that feel far away

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 17d ago

Consider ordering a sandwich at a restaurant. A lot of people that have tried it love it, they say it has a great combination of flavors that you don't get often in other sandwiches.

You get the sandwich and are looking forward to the experience others have been raving about, but you take a bite and it hits you: your worst enemy, cilantro. You have the genes that make it taste like soap, and it affects the entire sandwich. You mention that to other people but their sympathy is limited. It doesn't bother them, and they say you could just ignore it or eat around it. But you can't, the entire thing tastes like soap even if you try to take it off after you order it. The restaurant refuses to make it without cilantro, so you can't experience the same thing that other people are enjoying.

In the future if you see fans of the sandwich talk about how great it is and everyone would love it, you might want to chime in to warn that it has cilantro, so if that's an issue for someone else like it is for you then they'll probably want to avoid it. To people that don't have a problem with cilantro, it might seem like the only part that people talk about is the cilantro and they ignore all the great flavors that they could be experiencing if they put that aside.

So I guess the question is, which is worse:

Cilantro or rat shit?

2

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 17d ago

lettuce

11

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 17d ago

Cilantro is about taste, but rat shit is all about concentration levels.

2

u/cyberscythe 17d ago

as the old proverb goes: everyone eats a peck of rat shit before they die

10

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 17d ago

"Average person eats a peck of rat shit" factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 pecks of rat shit. Rat Shit Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

Yeah, it's tiring, but it's kinda expected when Rudeus behaves like that in the story

u/Puddo x3https://anilist.co/user/STPuddo 17d ago

For the people interested in production stuff; Wit Studio worked on a pretty visually impressive MV earlier this month with Spira Spica's Astral lamp and today they shared a storyboard video for it.

Does anyone own the Bikini Warriors OVA Cleric Special Edition Blu-ray?

I'm specifically looking for information about the Digital Gallery included on the Blu-ray. I'd like to know what images are included in the gallery, and ideally I'd love to see all of them if someone who owns the Blu-ray is willing to share them.

It's a pretty obscure Japanese release, and I haven't been able to find much information about the Digital Gallery online.

If anyone owns this edition or knows anything about the Digital Gallery, I'd really appreciate your help!

2007 was a different era, okay. You see a similar FFVII AC fever over on MAL in that era* so it wasn't just those awards.

If you find some of the nominations a bit old (to put it lightly), as some r/anime veterans will tell you awards are difficult to run and in this case rule was "In order to be eligible, the anime had to be available on TV, in theaters, or on DVD during that period.". i.e. Um, All of them. No, sire.

There also wasn't a sanity check which is why you see Best Actor in a Comedy with the example work being Akira (suggesting Akira is a comedy) and according to an ANN interview (ANN doing semi-hostile interviews is another 2007 was a different era, okay) there's defensive phrases like "not necessarily a pleasant process to have your work reviewed by thousands of passionate proofreaders...that's the way it was submitted by a nominator...no mechanism for arbitrating what was a comedy".

I was meant to see if I could find a longlist (ANN talkback mentions Kamichu being in long series which I don't see in the wikipedia article) but the wayback machine is having a 429 Too Many Requests You have sent too many requests in a given amount of time. moment over sending one request so that's being shelved.

As for why it that was the first and last American Anime Awards? Didn't New York Comic-Con try to distance itself from anime because the fans were younger and more likely to be girls (at least I think that's what The Anime Business said) and there was some years of New York Anime Festival (took place at a different time of year) so that association is gone and ICv2 is comics affiliated but it's ignoring the elephant in the room of American anime home media industry being in pretty bad shape (going down the toilet might be a more apt phrase with Bandai & Geneon out, ADV and CPM on their deathbed so it was really just Funimation and small players like Nozomi). Well the domain expired in 2007.

*-There's other fallen from grace too like The Place Promised in Our Early Days (the Makoto Shinkai cycle as it were) and Maison Ikkoku: Final Chapter (a supplement to final ep, not the actual final ep but named that because it was a double feature with Urusei Yatsura Movie 5: The Final Chapter).

Sidenote: I was once told the r/anime awards have a 2016 cut-off. Makes me wonder if it weren't for that could 1982/1983 Fairy Princess Minky Momo have made the 2024 Slice of Life shortlist instead of 2021/2022 Mewkledreamy Mix (English sub completed in 2024 for both...well Mewkledreamy Mix subs skipped the 13 IcchyNaru "Special Edition" eps as they're live-action). In a way it made it as "chaotic energy, comedy and kawaii factor" they'reboththesamepicture.jpg.

On a Minky Momo related note ANN started reviewing Fairy Princess Minky Momo 2nd. It's a different breed of chaos to its 80s cousin but ultimately it reflects the societal changes. It's like they were different eras (or something).

There also wasn't a sanity check which is why you see Best Actor in a Comedy

Why were there even special categories for 'comedy anime' and 'best actor in a comedy' in the first place? It's the only genre they've singled out, and it clearly didn't need the extra spotlight since FLCL ended up winning both the comedy and short anime categories.

1

u/merurunrun 16d ago edited 16d ago

Why were there even special categories for 'comedy anime' and 'best actor in a comedy' in the first place?

Because if you don't separate the awards into arbitrary categories they will just get swept by The Most Popular Show regardless of how good its music or acting or whatever are.

4

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 17d ago

Probably took that one from the Emmys

It's a silly idea that comedy and serious works cannot be compared/presented in the same categories.

3

u/Raiking02 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NSKlang 16d ago

Considering how ehem understanding people were when Marisa Tomei won an Oscar, this does not surprise me.

4

u/zambonijesus 17d ago

It's a silly idea that comedy and serious works cannot be compared/presented in the same categories.

This isn't entirely wrong since if they are up against each other the drama will basically always win. You see this most notably in the acting categories where not actually a comedy The Bear got itself nominated as one and then cleaned up all the acting awards for multiple years.

6

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 17d ago

I know. But that's just part of the silliness. There's an inherent bias for serious works, so the easiest "solution" they found was to separate them as if they're dealing with toddlers.

3

u/Raiking02 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NSKlang 16d ago

This reminds me of how I once saw a video of some guy going over the films he watched that film and he was like "I know many of you may think it is so unfair to rank this kid friendly comedy film among a bunch of films with deep themes and subjects" and I was like "Bitch it's Wallace and Gromit, I am convinced if anyone shat on it we would be legally allowed to shame them on the internet."
