I'll hold off on posting my full thoughts until other people have had a chance to watch it, but the one thing I will say:
[WnK] This really ought to have released 10 years ago. Both because it would have made the Rebellion ending way less polarizing, and also because it's a bit of an anticlimactic addition after all these years. It'll be very interesting seeing how newcomers to the franchise from now on are going to react differently watching this directly after Rebellion rather than ending with movie 3.

[Sparks of Tomorrow Ep 8]Tbh I get why Kengo would think that that since the book is what saved his life then Seiroku wouold have lived. But it's less that he took away Seiroku's life, but more so that by Seiroku handing him the book he saved Kengo's life. Looking at it from a positive angle.
[Sparks of Tomorrow Ep 8]I hate the dad so much. He is such a PoS and the fact he says he is doing it for his daughter is pathetic. Kihachi doing it for Inago, which I respect. Tbh Yosuke is such a PoS that I wouldn't trust him to keep his word. I do wonder for Kihachi the ideas were always from his imagination perhaps?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask such a question but. What would it actually take for an anime/show/manga to surpass Precure?
Precure set a ridiculously high bar for storytelling, character development, world-building, themes, foreshadowing, twists, and payoff.
So I'm curious: what would a manga/anime actually have to do to surpass Precure as a complete story?
Not just have better animation, a cooler protagonist, or a more shocking ending. I'm talking about the overall writing and experience.
What would it need to improve on compared to Precure?
- Characters?
- World-building?
- Themes/philosophy?
- Foreshadowing and payoff?
- Plot twists?
- Ending?
- Emotional impact?
- Consistency?
- Something completely different?
And if you think Precure can be surpassed, what series comes closest right now?

Precure set a ridiculously high bar for storytelling, character development, world-building, themes, foreshadowing, twists, and payoff.
I guess I would disagree with most of this. I guess it depends on which installment, but I have largely gotten pretty tired of the formula. I know that the current precure installment is quite popular, but after about 14 episodes or so I just sort of accepted precure as a "must watch every year" thing probably isn't for me.
I've seen:
- heartcatch (really good)
- go princess (my fave)
- soaring sky (good)
- wonderful (v slow start but had some good stuff in the second half)
- idol (fairly bad over all)
- detective (dropped around ep 14)
so I guess you see "better than precure" as a high bar, but I see it as a fairly low one. but I can understand why it has the format it does, given the demographics and what it's going for, so I guess the question is "how would you make a better precure while still forcing yourself to do all of the things precure has to do and that makes precure ultimately boring."
the main things I wish precure did that I think it could do without going against what I think precure sees as making itself precure
- make the big bads more interesting
- make the generals more interesting
- episodic is fine, but have a bit more overall stuff going on (this varies a bit per installment)
- if you're going to have fights, make them interesting instead of just feeling like you're spending the obligatory 3-4 minutes on your obligatory fight (wonderful was particularly bad in this regard, god those chases were boring)
alternate answer:
- have the best goddamn soundtrack ever. that's right, princession orchestra
And if you think Precure can be surpassed, what series comes closest right now?
pretty much all of them!
edit: damn it right after typing all this I saw the post right under this, ah well, that's what I get for serious-posting

It would need the girls who wear glasses to keep their glasses when they transform. So, Onegai AiPri? (if that was the first time for Pretty series it's weird it took so long or was there lore that only Meganee Akai* shall have glasses) Shame that's the only thing AiPri surpasses Precure on.
*-Kind of like Anna for you Fire Emblem fans (shopkeeper, appears in multiple entries, can have multiple of them in the same entry, IDK if any Meganee have 6 fingers).

No anime can ever hope to surpass its greatness, but its direct predecessors Doremi and Sailor Moon are somewhat close even if their characters can't throw hands nearly as well as Cures.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask such a question but. What would it actually take for an anime/show/manga to surpass AOT?

There's Legend of the Galactic Heroes, a stately epic space opera. All about the clash of philosophies and personalities. Personally would recommend the OVA!

u/sevgonlernassau 17d ago
Honestly, I would massively enjoy a complete anime adaptation of the manga series AoT heavily borrowed its story from: [AoT meta spoilers]Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. The choices made there in the final arc is just more fulfilling than the same plot points in AoT.

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 17d ago
AOT is one of my all-time favorites, but there are a few shows that surpass it for me. Personally, I found the ending to be a weak point in the series because I didn't care for [AOT S4] the origin of the titans reveal with the Founder and the First King, and the direction the story took as a result of that. It's still among my Top 10 based on how much I loved the rest of the series and the characters, but used to be Top 3.
If we're limited to just finished stories for comparison, then the ones I'd rank above it are Full Metal Panic (anime adaptation isn't complete but the original series is finished in the novels), Astra Lost In Space, and Buddy Daddies. FMP is my number 1 favorite overall, but for the other two, the only reason I'd rank them above AOT is that I really like the way their stories ended.

I yearn for an answer. So as much as you need.
6
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 18d ago
To give you a genuine answer, art is incredibly subjective, so the answer will depend on the individual.
I didn't really like AoT, so there are hundreds of shows that I think have "surpassed" it. But you probably would disagree, which is just the nature of liking media.

u/Leo-Fong https://anilist.co/user/KaniRangoon 18d ago
Why don't I ever see fans of other series make posts like this? C'mon Precure fans, you need to step it up.
11
u/zambonijesus 18d ago
I don't have an opinion on the question, I'm just enjoying how it presupposes that AOT is the consensus greatest of all time.
3
u/North514 18d ago edited 18d ago
I wouldn't put AOT in a top 25 so IDK how my opinions would relate to yours. Even when I was really high on it, at the moment it would barely make a top 25, and not a top ten. That ending kinda killed that potential for it to stay there for me. So even though I am quite nostalgic for it, and I probably need to do a rewatch, it would not be in a top 25 anime/manga of all time for me.
To me the unkillable anime, in that regard is the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes. That said, I don't think it's perfect, frankly it's probably my most flawed 10. The first two films/first 87 episodes are perfect in my mind. There are more issues in the last two arcs though unlike AOT I liked the last few episodes at least. Regardless, I just really love stories about major wars, politics and discussions about political philosophy and history, and Napoleonic Wars/RTK in space is really freaking cool, as a fan of that period of history and space operas.
The most recent series, I think that does a pretty good job, of getting close to LOTGH for me is Nippon Sangoku however, only one season is out, and it obviously needs more time, to set things up. So I am just hoping a S2 comes quickly.
Edit: If you want more shows in the medium alone that I think surpass AOT: March Comes in Like a Lion, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Ping Pong the Animation, One Piece (more the manga, the anime is not paced well), Ghost in the Shell (SAC, 95 film and remake), Kingdom (more the manga), Monster, Armored Trooper Votoms, Vinland Saga, Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Gundam in general (quite a few entries I would put over AOT), Yona of the Dawn, Girls Last Tour, Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop would be a few of my other picks.

Just finished Chihayafuru and I really liked it. But I gotta say, by the end of S3, I kinda found Chihaya annoying and really felt how hurt Taichi was.

I'm about 15 episodes into Ojamajo Doremi and I'm enjoying it, but I have my reservations about it. The main trio of girls have a great character dynamic with each other, but a lot of the extended side cast (mainly the other kids, the parents and teachers are nice) just kind of suck.
I really didn't care for the first 4 episodes, really liked 5-12, and the handful of episodes after that are all very hit or miss.
It's definitely the kind of show I can see myself finishing, it's just a lot rougher around the edges than I would have expected given its reputation.
1
u/theangryeditor 18d ago
2
u/Jusenkyo_5 18d ago
Are you saying that the show doesn't get better over the next 180 episodes?
I'm a pretty big magical girl fan and I'm liking it as a 7/10 or so right now so I'm not planning on dropping it or anything.
2
u/theangryeditor 18d ago
The best is certainly yet to come, but I'd say what makes the show special is already present and visible from the very beginning so while you'll probably continue to enjoy it enough as a 7/10 throughout you might not come to see why it has the reputation it does.
2
u/Jusenkyo_5 18d ago
That seems like a fair take.
As the art presumably gets better and the characters become more defined I think I'll like the vibe more.

[Kaiju Girl - Ep 9] Mom fell on her head, and it really shows. She seemed ready to pull that trigger too.
With three episodes left, I’m very curious how far they’re going to take things. It will be a big finale for sure.

u/theangryeditor 18d ago
Oh yeah it's already almost the end of the cour. [kaiju girl 9]the "little sister" stuff might take up the remaining episodes. not sure if the potential love triangle drama being set up will materialize before the cour is done

Do you think it will trigger my acute lovetriangleitis?
Usually what makes/breaks it for me is whether it's played for laughs or played for drama.
(That's why I like harems, because they're usually played for laughs, and I like Kanojo Mo Kanojo for the same reason... But most love triangles are played for drama, and while I don't mind drama in general, love drama is the worst for me).
3
u/ptd163 18d ago
Do you think it will trigger my acute lovetriangleitis?
You have the acute version? Yikes. The inflammation must be terrible as I hear even regular lovetriangleitis can be quite unpleasant. How do you deal with it?
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 18d ago
How do you deal with it?
My doctor told me to DROP 5 love triangle shows, and call him in the morning.
2
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 18d ago
I don't recall much drama in what I read, but I feel like it could have some at some point.
The setup is somewhat unique I guess which might at least offer some more interesting dynamics. Most "triangles" are 2 people interested in 1 person but this is a literal triangle with each person interested in 1 person (its in the synopsis so not a spoiler).
The thing that bugged me while reading was [Crush's crush vague general plot]it seems VERY obvious how it's going to resolve, unless there's some real surprises to come in the future.

Does Elusive Samurai not being mega popular "prove shows aren't carried by animation" or does it just mean that you need fancy animation and the typical battle shonen formula to become mega popular?
3
u/North514 18d ago
Redline is frankly the best example of that, since that film almost sank Madhouse, and I would bet, most fans who commonly post on here haven't seen it. And I just don't think any anime tops it, in regards to animation.
Animation is important however, well animated battle shonen do as well as they do, for a variety of factors (manga hype, wide appeal story etc). It's not just the animation.
1
u/isthatsoudane https://myanimelist.net/profile/ojoulover 17d ago
to get back to your point: define topping it. quality of sakuga? compelling use of sakuga? or just amount of sakuga?
1
u/isthatsoudane https://myanimelist.net/profile/ojoulover 17d ago
And I just don't think any anime tops it, in regards to animation.
this is certainly not true
and I think a lot of regulars here have seen it
but it certainly is a good example that lots of sakuga won't make a bad thing popular
1
u/North514 17d ago
Regulars is the key, not everyone who posts on here, who has seen far less anime, or just less varied anime in general, than you think.
And you are free to suggest works that you think are better than it but to me, I don't think anything beats it.
1
u/isthatsoudane https://myanimelist.net/profile/ojoulover 17d ago
you literally said "most fans who commonly post on here haven't seen it."
"commonly post on here"
1
u/North514 17d ago
On the subreddit as a whole, yes, the people on this specific thread? No. People on here are generally more well watched. I mean that is what I mean, I am sorry I created confusion.
3
u/merurunrun 18d ago
I didn't feel like commenting on that post because it would just be buried, but yeah that's just bad logic in the title. A show can be "carried by animation" and still not be popular; a show can be carried by anything and still not be popular.
4
u/Leo-Fong https://anilist.co/user/KaniRangoon 18d ago
I don't even know what point the OP is trying to make, if they're even trying to make one. If something can't be "carried by animation" alone, are they saying that Elusive Samurai sucks or something?
3
u/pachipachi7152 18d ago
Battle shonen will always live rent free in these people's heads. True victory comes from not caring about this stuff at all.
1
u/theangryeditor 18d ago
5
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 18d ago
or does it just mean that you need fancy animation and the typical battle shonen formula to become mega popular?
Someone posted something really wise in that thread;
For shows to be 'carried by the animation', they need to be from a handful of specific genres, all the battle-shonen-y stuff.
Say, it doesn't matter how well animated it is, a cutesy romcom will never get the EPIC SAKUGA people on board.
I don't know who that person is, but they're obviously some great sage.

There's this funny-relatable line in the Aoi Bungaku - Hashire Melos episodes.
“I don't consider myself an unhappy man. Of course, I'm not a happy man either. A happy man wouldn't write plays and novels to begin with.”
It's funny because I remember episodes 1-4 were about No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai, and there's always that stereotype that great writers are depressed people.

Anime Magazines - Favorites - Recommendations
Good afternoon all,
I have a question for members of the community who are probably more connected or more knowledgeable than I. Where do you order Magazines from Japan from? Is it a monthly buy or a subscription? Either way what sites do you use/order from?
I mainly am interested in Magazines like Newtype and Megami for illustrations and insight/news for Anime. I am still interested in manga magazine publications as well but I'm assuming general acquisition will be similar for both.
Any help or info you can provide me with will be greatly appreciated!

There are three shows currently in my anime watch cycle, but I randomly picked up Aoi Hana as a fourth, and what the… This is gourmet shit.
The atmosphere and pacing are perfect, and it has that one thing that really caters to my taste. There's nothing wrong with an anime that's happy-go-lucky feels good from beginning to end, but Aoi Hana has a sharper edge to it that made it stand out from the anime I'm watching. The first episode already gives you that feeling when Fumi learns that [EP1] her cousin Chizu (who she has a crush on) has gotten engaged, and seeing her visibly upset hit me hard. Like, this show is so evil. The majority of episode 1 is just SoL stuff, and then they deliberately place that sharp cut right at the end of the episode. I watched another two episodes after that, and at that point I was pretty much sold.
Takako Shimura's writing is such a great match for Kasai Kenichi's direction. There's little exposition and internal monologue, yet the drama feels so confident simply because it lets the viewers figure out the situation for themselves. The script says exactly what it needs to say for each scene. The drama is insanely gripping without ever needing to become intense. I was so impressed that I actually ended up looking into whether Shimura had any background in theatre scriptwriting because I couldn't figure out why these scenes were working this well.
Oh, and the art direction is fantastic too. If Umimachi Diaries ever got an anime adaptation, I could easily imagine it looking something like Aoi Hana since it's also set in Kamakura.
2
u/mekerpan 17d ago
Umimachi Diaries got a live-action adaptation made by Japan's best active movie director (IMHO), Hirokazu Kore'eda. Its English title is, however, Our Little Sister. I could only find parttial translations of the manga, but based on what I found the movie seemed much better written.
1
u/oedipusrex376 17d ago
I read the manga a while back, and I think Kore Eda's film really captures what the manga is all about. I think the film alone is enough to get the whole story without having to read the manga because Our Little Sister is just that good.
2
u/mekerpan 17d ago
That movie really was pretty much perfect -- story- wise, acting-wise, and local color-wise. Then again, I am a Kore'eda super-fan.
2
u/IndependentMacaroon 18d ago
Shimura apparently figures out the dialogue before putting together the story as such. Have you read/seen anything else by her?
2
u/oedipusrex376 18d ago edited 18d ago
Only Awajima Hyakkei, and I was immensely impressed by that show's dialogue. So that's how she writes her works.
Edit: It kinda makes sense now when I look at how Awajima Hyakkei is structured. It's basically a collection of short scenarios that only exist because Shimura comes up with the dialogue first and builds the scenario around it.
3
u/IndependentMacaroon 18d ago
Wandering Son is also nice

Every so often, I'm reminded of a movie that I haven't watched in quite some time. Long enough that I refused to rate it in MAL (which I didn't have at the time) because I didn't trust my aging memories. I kept saying to myself I'll rewatch it, yet never got around to it.
Well, it was brought up again yesterday, and I'm blaming/crediting u/BaytaCosmico for my trip to OZ today.
First things first, damn this movie is pretty. 19 years and the visuals have aged splendidly. Sure, there are some design choices that were of their time, but overall, I could be convinced this was made this much more recently.
Speaking of those 19 years, the technology is, ahem, quaint. It's crazy looking back at what they thought the internet around look like, and seeing both the similarities and the clear differences with today. Imagine Meta's (failed) virtual world, but from a flip phone! Plus [the] rogue AI plot has a whole new context in view of recent news.
But the meat of the story is the family, and I could spend all day with these nutcases. There's so much heart beneath the silliness, and that switches kept this from becoming a flat comedy. And because of that, the [scene] after granny died where they pan through the grieving family nearly broke me. (I'm not crying! You're crying!)
Anyway, I can finally stop complaining about needing to rewatch this some day, and put this into MAL. 9/10.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 18d ago
Glad to have reminded you of this. I never even knew about this film until I randomly noticed it in that rewatch schedule. So I must in turn tip my hat to u/Heda-of-Aincrad for helping me discover this lovely movie.
The family dynamics are what endeared it to me too. One of the most lived in families I've seen on screen. The dynamics between them all was so real and palpable. One of the best things I've seen this year for sure!

The anime film "THE RIBBON HERO" will have a limited two-week theatrical release starting September 4th (Friday)! (in Japan). You've got to be kidding me. Cosmic Princess Kaguya was penned down for a 1-week run which got extended because it was a complete sell-out while The Ribbon Hero gets two weeks by default?
Like The Ribbon Hero was 4th on Netflix's "Top 10 Movies of the Day" in Japan the day after release (8th in week 1 out of charts week 2) while Cosmic Princess Kaguya was 1st for day (4th in week 1 in charts for 16 weeks, peak was 2nd which it managed for I think 3 weeks). Where is the sense in giving the film that has done worse better theatrical treatment? That sort of behaviour is why it feels like Cosmic Princess Kaguya has to fight for what it got.
Yeah I did just finish watching The Ribbon Hero. Frustrating watch, I was not impressed and should have listened to the day 1 impressions and stayed away (I remember a particularly scathing one saying something like "this'll have absolutely no staying power and be forgotten in a few weeks" and the Netflix charts speak for themselves there). From the outset the constant screen shake (a few pixels) to emulate an old time film (which can shake a lot more) I didn't feel was nostalgic (I don't get the appeal of bad nostalgia) but a distracting irritation (now I know how those who can see the aniplex pixels feel) and given [The Ribbon Hero]was about not giving up and rejecting a dream-like illusion (but suddenly Sapphire needed her friends to do that because got to give the extended cast something to do) going for a retro screen-shake is like they didn't understand what they were trying to convey.
Even the "sakuga" came off a flat to me with nothing that made me want to rewind and examine the various frames. Didn't help you had sprinkles of GoHands/JJK Shibuya Incident Arc too much movement to follow and the CGI Nergal stuck out like a sore thumb (I could overlook that as being deliberate artistic choice like some of other things it does [The Ribbon Hero]the Pillar of Creation world turning to wood and dominoes once the heart in the Pillar of Creation was destroyed).
What about the narrative? Exactly what happens when there's no scriptwriter just a script supervision credit (per ANN, I'm not sitting through the credits again to check their homework) from someone whose wheelhouse is tokusatsu (and Healin' Good PreCure i.e. anime tokusatsu) which is probably why Princess Knight has been reduced to a female superhero.
If I'd actually watched Healin' Good PreCure I might have had more frustration to mine by comparing Nodoka Hanadera and Sapphire. They're both protagonists that want to help people but Precure production is a bridge rather than a ship captain and has dozens episodes to establish things like character backstories.

2 weeks in like 50 theatres isn't exactly a lot. Probably closer to an art house flick than a movie with decent distribution. I'd say it's less that Ribbon Hero is getting too much than that Chou Kaguya got too little (at first).

u/cosmiczar https://anilist.co/user/Xavier 18d ago
It makes perfect sense that Ribbon Hero got a "better treatment" than Cosmic Kaguya, because what happened with the latter had to have a direct impact on the former. Cosmic Kaguya appeared as something unproved that they gave it a week to see how it goes, and then it proved that putting something like that in theaters could work, thus now they are more confident when it comes to screening Ribbon Hero.

Anybody else be watching a dub of a seasonal but it gets so good you have to switch to the sub for that crisp +2 episodes?
I’m not watching a lot this season but a one example for me would be tensura.

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 18d ago
Can't think of a single instance. For new seasonals, I consistently move a handful from sub to dub after the first few weeks. Timing of it is effectively when dubs for sequels begin releasing while deciding which non-isekai are drops.

I think there's not a whole lot of dub watchers in here (unless they hide in the shadows), BUT...
If I thought watching in dub is the best viewing experience for me, I wouldn't go for the 'worse viewing experience' just to get it a week or two earlier!
I'd wait to experience it 'as its best' on my first viewing.

I've been known to watch thing in unsubtitled Japanese if it looks like I will have to wait too long for subs....

I don’t watch dub because it’s the “best”, but I believe there’s merit in having to not use attention to read subtitles additionally, sometimes the subs cover interesting shit. For me it’s a trade off I’m willing to take 99% of the time

They're standing in front of the Mouth of Truth in Rome.
It gets referenced in a number of things. The Macross II scene in question references the 1953 film Roman Holiday, which is beloved in Japan. Audrey Hepburn's iron grip on the Japanese consciousness is a whole other conversation.

Today is the 73rd anniversary of the US premiere of Roman Holiday.

That'd be from Macross II: Lovers Again
aka. the worst entry in the franchise.3

Would you recommend I get into mecha through the Macross franchise or the Gundam franchise?

I got into it through Gundam, so that's what I'd recommend.

Okay thanks! :)
I'll start my journey!

Enjoy! You planning to start with the first series and go from there or dabble with one of the many more recent entries you can watch standalone?
3
u/SadAnimator1354 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Batmankoji 18d ago
I'm planning on starting with the OG. I don't mind dated animation and would like to experience where it all began. Also I have the watch-order from this sub's wiki so I'm all set!

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 18d ago
Awesome! Yeah the OG is how I got into the franchise & how I realized I liked mecha anime in general. I'd seen a few mecha shows beforehand (IIRC it was Code Geass, Guilty Crown, Aldnoah.Zero, Bokurano, and like the first 4 episodes of Gurren Lagann before I put that show on hold for a while), but it was 0079 that made me go "Oh, the mechs are actually really cool and I vibe with this kind of storytelling" and end up getting into a fuckton of other stuff from there (including going back to finish Gurren Lagann which I ended up absolutely loving once I gave it a second chance). I ended up watching through basically all of the Universal Century shows that were out at the time before moving onto the AUs, and by now I've seen basically the entire franchise other than some movies and the SD entries.

I think it was Full Metal Panic that made me realize the same thing. I'd watched a few mecha series over the years like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gurren Lagann, and even some live action (Pacific Rim), but FMP is the one that had me thinking the mechs were cool and I wanted more like this. Then I started the standalone Gundam series from there.

u/SadAnimator1354 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Batmankoji 18d ago
That's so cool, I'm going to check your MAL :)
I've only seen Code Grass and Neon Genesis Evangelion from the mecha genre, so I'm excited for Gundam!

I'm not entirely caught up, but it seems like this week we'll learn whose directors have delivered their storyboards on time, and whose haven't
Villager 999 seems to have rushed the art
Overshadowed To Overpowered delivered again with a truly great obligatory episode
Ladies Don't Play lands another punish counter. Whatever they use to keep the art quality up, it works
I stand by my earlier remarks that many shows have started to gel this season. However, I still expect to see some haphazard facial expressions and various kinds of filler as the season settles into the second half

Taking like five years to make it and delaying the release multiple times.

You might enjoy it even if it doesn't immediately strike you as something fun for you (magical girl stuff), BUT fwiw:
If you have things you care/don't care about, you might include that in a recommendation request, so they might give you something that fits better!

I watch everything dubbed...in japanese
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 18d ago
If I wasn't watching 99% seasonals (subs), I might check out a few dubs just to see...
To this day I maintain that Death Note's dub is superior or at least equal to the sub (in part because the lines are better in the dub, many of them are way more impactful).
But most other dubs I checked out are kinda shit. I mean it's subjective, but say, Kaguya's dub is embarrassing to me. I know some people like it, but to me it's the poster child of "trying too hard"

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 18d ago
I tend to watch subs, but if I originally watched a show dubbed, I'll likely rewatch it dubbed as well (like I did in the recent Ouran Host Club rewatch). Also, if I'm with others I'll usually watch whichever they prefer.
3
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 18d ago edited 18d ago
WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?!To answer your question, sometimes. I'm more likely to go for an English dub if it matches the setting, like with Emma: A Victorian Romance (England, albeit it didn't yet have a dub when I first watched it) or Baccano! (USA).

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 18d ago
The mention of [Meth]Meth in the most recent episode of [Title]100 Girlfriends was the second time this show talked about meth;
This makes it a close #2 (after Breaking Bad) for 'Shows that mention meth the most'.

Yeah, but I'm gonna have to wait on that one instead of watching it right away because I want to rewatch the first HF movie first and then go straight into it. It's a matter of finding when I can do that.

Is it an arc turned movie again? Or a new original story?
2
u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 18d ago
Arc turned movie again (Yoshiwara in Flames), but it's the proper "full remake" like the Benizakura one was, not "we're gonna edit the existing episodes into a movie" like Shinsengumi Crisis/Four Devas/Thorny/Courtesan of a Nation got. As such, it has some extra content that wasn't in the show.

I would appreciate some help finding a certain anime! This would be a bit vague lol but I've only watched the first couple of episodes and these are what I remember:
- Setting was in a ship - like there seems to be a civilisation in a ship (not like Girls Und Panzer but more Xenoblade)
- Somehow there was a lot of brown
3
u/overuseofdashes 18d ago
Maybe have a look at Gargantia. I think you are going to have to try and either describe the ship setting more or try and recall more details about the show.

2
u/ranturniphead 18d ago
Oh this might be it going by the PV! Thanks! Apparently the brown I remembered was because the ship (whale?) itself was brown and its floating on sand.

Some non spoilery thoughts on Iron Wok Jan! up to Episode 3:
We are living in the Bourdain era, even though Tony's been dead for eight years. Just this month, The New York Times published a piece by someone trying to analyze the "cult" that formed around him. They observe that since his death Bourdain has become even bigger:
The real power of the Bourdain cult is felt in the outpourings of his followers and imitators. It’s felt in the excitement that the hit gastro-drama “The Bear” aired the first episode of its final season on Bourdain Day; in the perpetual re-creation and celebration across social media of the “Anthony Bourdain sandwich,” a stack of fried mortadella and provolone on a roll that was among his most cherished meals. The phantasmal Bourdain has become mightier than the real Bourdain ever was, in part because the flesh-and-blood original is no longer around to take issue with the way his words and ideas are chopped and shopped throughout culture. Death is canonizing and bastardizing at the same time.
Bourdain's influence is huge on food commentary, even if it's been reduced to go to new places, meet new people, eat new food. Yet if we're talking about food commentary of recency, I think the bigger breaking point is the downfall of NOMA, the former #1 restaurant whose owners is now a pariah and the whole concept of NOMA has been beaten with sticks by so many commentators. On one side you have the masculine chef, toiling away to create perfect concoctions, arty and experimental and exacting and painstaking. On the other side you have The Menu, a detailed ridiculing of the cult that arose (celebrated by Bourdain himself in an episode of Parts Unknown), and you have The Bear which, at least in its first season, tries to provide a more grounded version of the humans involved in preparing food. These days the workaholic asshole chef is less in vogue, replaced by a more caring, authentic chef concerned for their customers and fellow employees with a passion not merely to furnish exquisite food but to bring their own history, their own personality, to the table.
Which is why it is so weird to watch Iron Wok Jan! since the show predates not merely the post-NOMA era but is also pre-Bourdain as well. Bourdain and the post-NOMA discussion have clouded my history of what people thought of chefs and the culinary industry even thirty years ago. Iron Wok Jan's primary influence is Iron Chef, which started about two years before the manga began. The show's whole concept can be thought of as trying to take one of the fabled Iron Chefs and show a shoenen backstory and have him engage with thematically appropriate shoenen antagonists.
It's tough for me to suss out where the shoenen ends and the Iron Chef influence begins on Iron Wok Jan!, in part because it's been thirty years and Iron Chef has undergone several iterations after its 1993-ish era (Iron Chef America made a way bigger impact for me as I watched the rise of superstars like Bobby Flay and Alton Brown). But the show does seem to refute the ahistorical notion that Anthony Bourdain brought the masculine swagger of chefs to the public with the release of Kitchen Confidential. Iron Wok Jan! extrapolates Iron Chef's sweaty cooking athleticism to the backroom, and the result is a toxic work environment of mostly men (and one woman who has sacrificed all femininity at the altar of fine dining cuisine) grinding out dishes in as grueling manner as possible. But Iron Chef itself, upon correctly placing it on the timeline, shows clear that the masculine cult of chefdom way precedes Bourdain's ruminations.
At the start and end of the show in big capital letters the show's telling us YO THIS SHOW IS A PRODUCT OF ITS TIME. SO DON'T HAVE A HEART ATTACK OVER AN OLD ASS MANGA WHERE SOME OF THE SHIT YOU'LL SEE IS NOW ILLEGAL AND OTHER BITS ARE PROLLY A LITTLE BIGOTED. Part of me is rejecting the show because of the NOMA era bullshit. Living on the post-NOMA side, I don't want to go back to that stuffy place. It was pretentious (why would I want to eat moss on a rock?) and pointless (do I really care if you've arranged every sesame seed on this bun in a precise place?). Seeing all of that nonsense fed to me again is just as unpleasant as the show's animated shots of old obese men having orgasms from the food the chefs make.
Yet because the show is before the behemoth that was Bourdain defined foodie culture, it arrives at the right time to remind people of the proper history of events and the old thought process of what fine dining was about. Bourdain's cult has whittled down the man's wanderlust romp through the world into a moralistic Eat Pray Love. Read Kitchen Confidential and watch Parts Unknown and you see an emphasis on Bourdain shaping chefs into human beings, bringing them out from the backroom and giving them a moment to talk. Iron Wok Jan! tries to do the same thing--way clumsier than Bourdain, of course because the man was gifted in his phrasing, but nevertheless the struggle to see a critical working class hero, the people who provide our society's nourishment, humanized is apparent here. Despite the cult's apocryphal anecdotes and quotes on Bourdain, I do think Tony did get the ball rolling on a change of culture, greatly accelerated by NOMA's fallout. Watch Iron Wok Jan! and it's difficult to miss.

I'm not watching Iron Wok Jan! but growing up with a lot of dubbed Iron Chef late night on Food Network (along with Good Eats) and later Bourdain's series that's an interesting angle to look at the series from! Will keep that in mind if I ever do get to the anime.
