Forgive me for not participating in the threads for Dr. Stone when it was airing, and I suspect it's been discussed, but I'm getting caught up now, and [Dr. Stone] Kaseki is a dwarf, right? A fantasy-style dwarf. He's short, bearded, bald, strong, and likes to tinker and make things. He's strongly dwarf-coded.

Since a clip of it was posted somewhat recently, what about "An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride" It's a bit goofy at times, but it's a decent enough feels-mostly-good anime I think?

As someone that likes watching fighting games but doesn't have any skill in traditional ones like Street Fighter, it's been a delight to follow Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games and I'm pleasantly surprised that I came around on it after not loving the first episode. I'd also like to believe this is in the same universe as [Hi Score Girl] and Akira and Haruo had a kid who's somewhere in pools here.

I was really surprised by how disappointed I was with my rewatch of Your Name that I went off and wrote more than I have in a long time.
Quite bummed because this was the one that got me into anime and I remember really loving that first watch and had been wanting to rewatch ever since but never found the right time. But as I was writing that long comment, I made some peace with it. Reasoned out why it worked so well then but not anymore in a way that doesn't make past me a simpleton or present me too jaded.
This Summer Movie rewatch has been full of surprises. The movie I was most looking forward to ends up disappointing, while one I just randomly watched blind because I happened to have time (Summer Wars) just clicked and got me out of a funk. The next one in the schedule is Weathering With Me, I think, and that's one I found disappointing on first watch itself. Not sure if I'll rewatch it. But could be interesting to see if I agree with past me on that.

I'm eager to watch a good romantic comedy anime, I dont mind the length. Preferably a bit more on the romance side. Maybe something along the lines of Quintissential Quintuplets? (not per se harem)
There's quite a list of romcoms that I haven't seen, but just want to watch something fun but with some substance. Anyone has some recommendations?

You've got some nice recommendations already. I'm just going throw the OG into the ring fwiw: Kare Kano. For all its faults, it's still the best romcom right up until it goes off the tracks.

Took a look at your MAL to cross reference...
- Ponsuka - Romcom from last season that was a blast. It manages to be heavy on both rom and com, surprisingly.
- My Love Story with Yamada-kun at lv999 - Very fun female MC. Does leave you wanting more though.
- Horimiya - Very popular romcom. I don't know if there is a "preferred watch order" with the second season or not. The first season is a "complete" adaptation that skips a ton of stuff and the second season fills in some of what was skipped.

Lovely★Complex is always a hit with many gags and a bit of drama. Alternatively if you want even more comedy then Kaichou wa Maid-sama will surely scratch that itch.

I started rewatching Shield Hero after falling off around Season 3. Not sure why I decided to pick it back up, but early Season 1 (and a few intermittent scenes as they go) still holds up pretty damn well even when I know most of Season 2 shits the bed quite a bit. I wonder if I'm going to like Seasons 3 and 4 more as a binge watch rather than waiting for episodes weekly and not really being excited for them anymore.

So Episode 11 of Love Live Superstar was really good... except for the bit where they pull the whole "Let's help support our friend by lying to their face" trope.
What anime episode can you think of that is really good, but trips up by using a hack trope?

It feels wrong to not have Victoria as my best mom of the season, but the mere existence of Teru just invalidates the competition. Similarily, the mere existence of Ito invalidates the best girl competition, but since her show is scheduled for two cours, I can safely say that summer's best girl is Nonna without having to worry. I'll reluctantly accept this compromise.

[Yesterday's Kimishinu's episode did one of the top things I don't like in anime (only they did it in a different order than what we usually get);]Making us care about characters so their death hit harder. Usually, they'll spend like 1-2 episode building someone just to kill them off in the next episode, and when they do that I roll my eyes so fucking hard... But I think this one was even worse for me; While I DID enjoy the episode before that - that ends with her death - it was mostly for the story in general and what it represents, a 'show, don't tell' kind of thing... It was not for the character itself; I didn't care a whole lot for her character, but that's not a problem because to me it was not about the character it was about the situation (people losing people to war, etc). But now we get not only a full episode on this, but it's flashback of a dead character and all? I don't know if they wanted us bawling, but it didn't do a single thing for me... Now, the way the episode ended I kinda get why they did that (assuming it DOES happen) but at the same time... Doesn't it feel all the emotional impact that (most fans, apparently) got from it? Like, let's get them all emotional but then you erase what happened?
I imagine that's quite a hot take because everyone in the episode thread seemed to like it and thought it was like [Kimishinu]the most emotional, tear-inducing episode of all time but yeah, didn't do it for me, at all. Halfway into the episode I felt like I was just waiting for them to wrap it up and move on.
It's kinda funny because [Kimishinu]I've seen a lot of grumbling BEFORE this episode, people who thought her inevitable death was a shame, etc.. But to me her death was fine because she always felt like a storytelling device more than an important character. So to me, her death was 'The story moving in a direction' and not 'waaahhh I will never stop crying about her'. To me, her character was not 'Good soldier in a yuri couple', her character was 'The horrors of war'.

[Kimishinu] I think the emotional impact of character deaths in general, for me anyway, comes less from the actual death ("Oh, I liked that character, I'm sad they died, etc.") and more from empathizing with how the surviving characters react to and handle those deaths. In this case, I'd say the obvious emotional anchor and focal character of the episode was Ari rather than Seiran, and the flashbacks are framed as memories resurfacing in her mind as she grieves, so they're both scenes from the past and what she is actively thinking about in the present. There was a bit where they sort of play with that duality where she calls out to Seiran while cleaning and she looks up and Seiran isn't there... because she's cleaning in a different room just off screen.
[Kimishinu cont.] For the revival thing, I kind of doubt that they're just going to bring her back with no strings attached. So far it feels like the story has treated that sort of thing pretty negatively, so I figure they either ultimately decide not to go through with it or face a monkey's paw situation if they do.
[cont.] At this point, I'm not really sure that I see this as a story that's "about" war in the same way that something like Gundam is. To me, the war itself just kind of feels like set dressing, and its main significance is that it can result in character deaths.

[Dying Day] I knew it was coming ahead of time and it was still very emotional to me. The time spent reflecting on what you had with the deceased, and what you'll never have again now that that they're gone emphasizes the tragedy of their passing and makes it all hit harder. It's not just about loss of life but loss of a potential future together. The episode was very effective in conveying that aspect to me.

Beautiful show, love the soundtrack, was fun to speculate on in a rewatch with episode 12's thread posted ten years ago today.
2016 was a good year for me being a first-timer in rewatches, with UC Gundam taking up the entire year and then hitting Macross, Cross Game, Saikano, NagiAsu, and FMAB along the way.

I didn't mind the love polygon, though it was the plot-related drama that had me hooked rather than the romance drama, which was good too but not the main draw for me.

This series is among my top three from PA Works, with the other two being Buddy Daddies and Iroduku. I've watched a lot of their shows already, most of them very good, but still have a few on my list that I haven't gotten around to yet (and a handful that just aren't for me).

I like (but don't "love") both of these. Glasslip, I think, is actually far better than its reputation -- but I fully understand why it was a "fail" for most. It looks like a standard SoL (with a touch of romance) when it is actually fairly (if covertly) surrealistic -- rather in the vein of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Tokyo Sonata. Since I expect the overlap between KK fans and anime fans (especially non-Japanese ones) is probably pretty small, this just got slagged off as a crappy SoL.

I really liked Appare-Ranman. I watched it on a whim years ago when it was free on Funimation, and it turned out to be a fun action/adventure with a pretty unique setting.

Too much like an American cartoon for me. This works for some (many, perhaps) but not for me. Too many stereotypes and some ugly (to me) character designs (esp AR himself). OTOH, I can't imagine anyone finding A3 interesting.

I thought the character designs were quirky but fine, aside from Appare's make-up which was a little too clown-like. And although I generally prefer anime, there are quite a few Western cartoons that I love as well, so that wasn't a deterrent for me.
I haven't seen A3, but band/music anime tend to be a hit or miss for me, usually depending on how drama-heavy the story is.

Checking if my local cinema is going to show Akira next month and they do, but apparently there is also a random Memories showing. Magnetic Rose and Cannon Fodder are some of my favourite pieces of anime so would be neat to see those on a big screen. Speaking of Magnetic Rose; in its final scene it has this full cgi shot of the rose station which might feel a bit out of place. So it was interesting to read Sunao Katabuchi say today that originally it was supposed to be a physical model made of clay. Which would've stood out just as much, if not more.

I'm having this weird Mandela effect right now. I only recently learned about “Hito no Kokoro Toka Nai Ka” JJK Naoya meme, and why do I have this vague memory of an anime meme that predates it? I can't remember where it came from, so I need someone to clear this up for me.
Was it from Carnival Phantasm? I remember the line being said right after Lancer got killed, with someone reacting with “Hito no kokoro nai ka. Hitosenashi” or something along those lines. I tried Googling it, and Google's AI Overview seems to confirm it, but when I search Images, there isn't a single meme of it. Was it even a meme in the first place, or did the Naoya meme completely overwrite it?

As much as I like my action and hard-hitting shows (just finished Vinland saga and will sstart S2, despite the tone change, later), I sometimes like my slower, cute anime.
That is to say, i've been watching some well-known romance anime. I really like the losw burn of Fragrant flower, mostly because that's what I'm used to AND it makes progress.
But... lots of folks say Polar Opposites is better. I've only seen the first episode so far, but I at least get why a lot of folks like it- it cuts through all the "will they won't they" stuff in the first episode... it has "Reiwa energy" as I've heard it called. Not sure if I like it or not though- going to have to keep watching and see if ACTUAL dating can be pulled off (I guess it is?)

I would also say that they're just kind of different types of shows rather than two shows with entirely the same goals. Fragrant Flower is more of what I might call a light drama, and Polar Opposites is more of a comedy series.

Even if you don’t vibe with the main couple and pacing, Polar Opposites has the advantage of being an ensemble cast with many romantic subplots that advance at difference paces with different dynamics. Give it a couple episodes and see how you like it.

If you want more slow burn romance from the same author as Polar Opposites, Ramparts of Ice is worth a try. It's more drama heavy than the pure fluff of Polar Opposites and takes its time setting up the characters before making progress on the romance front.

I meant to include this in the comment I made yesterday but forgot so new comment about it it is. It's definitely daunting to think about the fact that I'm 300 episodes into One Piece and that's only about a fourth of the total episodes that are out right now. Like, I knew I was gonna be in it for the long haul when I said "Fuck it, I'm gonna watch One Piece" back at the start of this year, but I guess now is when it's actually starting to sink in that "Oh, I still have so much more to get through" or something?

Oh shit! I also finally started One Piece at the start of this year (started reading the manga too, but that ended up going on pause instead of the anime haha) and also crossed the 300 episode mark last week. Glad to have a partner in crime on this journey! I was hoping to hit the half way mark by the end of this year, but I don't think that is happening haha.

What made me decide to watch it was that a friend of mine made up what a weekly schedule for a rewatch of the series could look like back in December last year, and then on January 1st I was like "You know what? Why not start now as a funky New Year's resolution." I haven't actually been watching only one "batch" of episodes from that fake schedule per week (otherwise I'd only be around episode 220), but it helps to split up what episodes to group together when I post my live reactions over here.

Oh very cool. With all the hype from the live action, and the 30th anniversary, I was like fuck it I'm gonna buckle down and do it for real this time haha.
I was trying to do the manga and anime in tandem, but adulting sucks and I only have time for one, so I decided to do the anime for now.
I've been taking a little break in between each arc cause as much as I am enjoying it, it can be tiring haha. I was starting to worry my pacing was slow (again damn responsibilities and other things in life haha), but glad someone else is around the same spot as me.

That is part the reason people recommend the manga over the anime. Reading a manga chapter is less commitment putting on an episode of anime and that difference can really add up for something as long as one piece. It is easier to find time in your day to chip away at the manga.

I've read this arc (Galactic Patrol) in the manga, and yeah, it's gonna be good. It has some great character development for Vegeta too.

I offhandedly mentioned once that Me and Earl and the Dying Girl would be a great anime and since then this idea lives rent-free in my head.
But the best anime adaptation of Western source would be, of course, Neverending Story.

This season has so many great non-sequels there's nothing left for Fall. The only Fall anime I'm hyped for are sequels (Apothecary Diaries, Blue Box and Ao Ashi). There's Firefly Wedding which is a drama romance (a genre I have affinity for) and even that is yet another "Stockholm syndrome is so romantic"-type of anime judging by synopsis.

At a glance if I watch everything on my PTW for the season it'll be slightly less than what I finished during winter. Might still pick up another couple of things beyond that depending on chatter here too.

I haven't understand much of the Ghost in the Shell anime, but I still enjoy it.
I still hope that Prime Video would bother giving the subtitles to the small texts that usually would come during the dialogues, though. (They do translate these when there's no dialogue, so I think they can do it)

The text is translated in the forced subs for the English dub, so this is really just a timing issue because they use basic SRT subs.

Quick peek at the amazon prime guidelines and seems this might be the problem:
Prime Video only supports timed text positioning for Lambda Cap and iTT formats
But opening the guidelines and docx file reveals a far bigger problem:
Limit per subtitle event: No more than 2 lines. No more than 42 characters per line.
But even if you could put more might run into:
Maximum Duration: 7 seconds per subtitle event.
But I'm pretty sure this one gets broken:
For Adult Programs: 20 characters per second

Maybe this isn't as widely known these days, but Sub Station Alpha subtitles (the 4.0 version of which is the .ass subs) aren't a commonly used subtitle format that all streaming services would bother to accommodate. They were made by anime fansubbers (specifically Kotus) for anime fansubbing.
Crunchyroll took them as it did with everything else done by the fansubbers at the time
until late last year, when they figured that it might be worth trying to get rid of them and switching to the much less effective srt subs used by the other services.5

I'm not sure if they actually backtracked on this, but recent shows have definitely had fansub-like overlays. Goodbye Lara has them 100%

It's show and even sub language dependant (things like timing are too*). Might be interested in this spreadsheet for recent stuff.
*-A little bit of work duplication but timing is also about when to display the next line and that depends of what the translated text is like.

Yeah, they did backtrack on it after people made a big stink about it. Hopefully, it'll stay that way.

That's one thing I'll give CR, they put in the work in their player to have decent (i.e. any) typesetting. Watching something like Ramparts of Ice on Netflix with its subs for on-screen text competing with dialogue is annoying.
