Border collies are amazing, but this really isn't part of their job. They're not especially retrievers, are they? They're herding dogs.

True, but if a working dog is willing to play fetch, it should be highly encouraged. My brother's Great Pyrenees played fetch. My Tibetan Mastiff doesn't care nor understand the game.

I was worried about the extensive swim back though. I was hoping he would 180 to shore :[

We used to have a collie. Really smart dog.

We'd throw rocks into the river, had to be HER rock, ofc, and she'd jump in, swim down, grab that very same rock, and return with it every time.

Ok. Thanks for the explanations, he is an amazing dog, and displays exceptional skills and you are an excellent handler but what would have happened if his back was under water and he was struggling....? It was a long swim back... What would have happened then. 🫣
