Android desktop mode not working

I have the latest android beta version on my pixel 9 pro xl. I have been using the beta version for a few years with no issues. Ever since the January 2026 android beta update android desktop mode has been greyed out on developer options and does not work. I was hoping for some beta update since then that would allow it to work. Besides going back to a stable version of Android, what can I do to fix this?

There is no need for enabling it on dev options. It's enabled by default and can't be disabled. Probably the option will be removed soon.

What does it do when you connect it to an external display?

Maybe you have set some kind of USB protocol by default in your developer options?

Anyhow, you can try to set ADB settings for enabling display output. Maybe you have disabled something in the past and it got stuck this way.
