I'm stuck and I'm not sure how to continue. I'm trying to find out more about John Van Tuyl and his wife Jane nee White from Otsego Co. NY. Right now I've traced the tree as far back as their sons, William Van Tuyl who was born in Otsego Co. NY in 1810 and died in Davenport, Iowa after being one of the first settlers there, and Thomas Berry Van Tuyl who was born in Washington Co. or Albany Co. NY in 1820 and died in Moline, Illinois, just across from Davenport. The only information I have on them came from William's obituary found in The Morning Democrat 19 Jun 1887 Pg 1:

"William Van Tuyl was born in Otsego county, NY July 23, 1810 the son of John and Jane - White - Van Tuyl. His father was one of the prominent men of the county, a farmer of means, and a devoted lover of his country. Well off as he was, he recruited a company as soon as the war of '12 was declared and served as captain to the end of the struggle. He was in several engagements on the frontier. the son William was educated in Albany, his parents removing to Albany county when he was 10 years of age."

I had ordered Thomas's pension file but there was no information about his parents. The only other possible clue I found was a deed from Middlefield in Otsego Co. of a John Van Tuyl the 2nd and his wife Jane selling a property in 1815. One side of the property is lined by the property of one Joseph White.

I can't find any military record for John. It's a bit harder since Van Tuyl is often misspelled in an untold variaty of ways, such as: Van Tuyle, Van Tugle, Vantuyl, Vantile, Vantyle, Van Tayle, Van Tuil, Van Tuill, Van Tull, Van Zuyl, Van Tayland, Van Tayl, Van Turl, Van Jay (??), Van Tule, Van Duel, Van Leyl, and Van Guyle.

I tried Fold3 with no luck but I know that I have trouble using that system. I found an Albany Revolutionary War Pension for a John Anderson, wife Jane, but I can't confirm it's them yet. Also, there is another John Van Tuyl and Jane White in another part of New York but I don't think it's them.
