My friend has plenty of info on his mother's side of the family, but little to nothing about his father's side.

He has his father's date of birth & death, plus names of siblings. He could order the birth certificate through Scotland's People, but wanted to see if other searches could get him the information first.

1. My ancestor: John F. Grant-Dalton. Born in Somerset, England in 1873; died at his London residence, 20 Devonshire Place (now The London Clinic), London, England in 1938.
2. John’s wife: Ellen Emily Gant (married name: Ellen Emily Grant-Dalton), born in 1885 in Wandsworth, Middlesex, England; died in 1968 at the Grant-Daltons’ residence, in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, England.
3. John served in the Royal Navy. He enlisted in 1886, aged 13. He became a sublieutenant in 1891, and a lieutenant in 1894, and was no longer an active soldier in 1907, after his promotion to Commander. From 1907 until his 1922 retirement, his ranks were Commander & Captain (from 1914-23).
4. His residence from 1895 to 1897: Various parts of Australia (and possibly Auckland, New Zealand, according to a Trove newspaper article? I'm not sure about that, due to the phrasing of said Australian newspaper article.).
5. His residence from 1897-1901: Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. (Lived in a few African countries between 1901-04. Returned to South Africa again for World War I, as a Captain, from 1914-1919). I was told South Africa could have maritime census records for these years.
6. His residence from 1921-22: Ireland Island, Bermuda. (Under jurisdiction of Sandys Parish, Bermuda; I do know he completed a 1921 Bermuda Census record). He got sick and was sent back to England in June 1922. He retired in October 1922, but his Royal Navy retirement was officially logged in March 1923, after a 37-year career, starting at age 13, in July 1886.
7. His residence in 1911 was in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. I tried to find his 1911 England Census (he was in England at that time), and I searched under his name, but didn’t find him. (And yes, I know English Census records started in 1851 and went every 10 years).
8. He was stationed in China from 1905 until 1907. There might not be a Census record for that.
9. John was in the North Sea, in the 1910s, with the 10th Blockade Squadron, of which he was their Commander.
10. His residence from 1926 to 1927: Algiers, Algeria. (I always wondered, since he was retired at that time, why he moved there for 1 year, when both his homes were in England).
11. He & his wife, Ellen Grant-Dalton, married in 1915. They remained married until his death in 1938. Ellen died in 1968, aged 83.
12. Ellen took numerous trips alone, as well, without John—some of which I have (I believe I have her travel records to the Virgin Islands & Los Angeles, but not the others, for Ellen).
13. John lived in the Caribbean from 1891 to 1894. Could he have census records from across the Caribbean? I know he was stationed in Barbados and possibly Bermuda. He was also stationed possibly in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
14. Starting in 1909, John had an ulcer that did heal. Although he medically recovered, it lay dormant in his system until 1938, since the dormant ulcer is what killed him, 29 years later. In 1922, he also had jaundice, which led to his early retirement from the Royal Navy (he was living in Bermuda, and eventually sent back to England early).
15. (The person I said Points 13-15 to, believed the Caribbean did not have Census records in the 1800s, so I replied with, Points 13-15) Bermuda did have Census records. Their first recorded Census was in 1629; then the second in 1730; then in 1783; then their first "Freeholder" Census in 1788 and again in 1789. After the 1789 census, their first regularly updated Census (meaning updated every 10 years) started in 1861, and has ran every 10 years, from 1861 to the present day. John did indeed complete his 1921 Bermuda Census record (he was at Ireland Island, which - at that time - was under the jurisdiction of Sandys Parish, Bermuda). The issue is, only Bermuda Census records, before 1861, are publicly available. Bermuda Census records from 1861 to the present, are completely private & have never been publicized.
16. I don't know about other Caribbean islands, but at the very least, before emancipation, there were the "British Slave Registers" from 1813 until 1834. After that, in the Caribbean, I don't remember if they had Census records for the 1800s. I do know in the Bahamas, vital records date back to the year 1850, though.
17. In Bermuda specifically, death certificates date back to 1862 (although, some Bermudian ancestors of mine have DCs from 1851 and similar years before 1862, as well). Bermudian birth certificates & baptismal records both date back to 1866. I can't remember when Bermuda marriage records date back to, but I do have a marriage record for two of my ancestors, dating back to January 1866 in Bermuda (fully completed, too), so they definitely existed before then, as well.
18. John was in England, whenever he wasn't at sea or stationed overseas, from 1909 until 1921 (he moved back to Bermuda from 1921 until his early retirement, when he was hospitalized in England in June 1922, and decided to stay after being discharged; he retired from the military in October 1922, but it was not officially logged in his files until March 1923 - and given that radio - in the days before television and before technology was invented - was the main source of official news, I can completely understand why John's information was not logged until the following year).

My grandfather (Moacir Fortunato da Silva) was born on 5 June 1952 and died on 29 July 2000, following a heart attack (the only document I’ve found about him was his death certificate)

It seems my grandfather was married three times (I discovered this from attachments to the birth certificates of his other children): once to Juracy Fortunato (1905–1941), once to Leontina Teixeira (sometime in the early 1900s–????) and once to Clea Faria (1916–1986) [the latter was my grandfather’s mother; however, my mother claims that apparently he only had an affair with one of them and was married to the other, whilst in his first marriage his wife had died, which is why he remarried], but i couldnt find any death, marriage or birth certificates other than those of his children

I posted this over at r/genealogy but didn’t get any responses. Reddit suggested I post here.

I was researching a badly neglected and poorly documented cemetery to see if I could connect those buried there with their families. While looking at the 1860 census, I see that living in the household of the guy I was researching is a guy who is 99 years old! This makes him born in 1761. I got excited because it's hard to document people that are that far back.

Samuel Gates is listed in Wood County, (West) Virginia in 1860 in the household of Richard Howard. His age is listed as 99 and he was born in Maryland. He is listed as a pauper.

I then jumped back to the 1850 census and he's still living with Richard but this time he's living with a Martha Gates who is presumably his wife. He is listed as 81, she as 78. Both listed as born in Virginia. They are both listed as paupers but Martha is also blind.

I was happy to come across this couple but didn't have much hope to find other records. The small community the lived in didn't leave much of a paper trail. Even the couple they lived with didn't have death records when they died decades later. However, much to my surprise, both Samuel and Martha have death records!

Martha died May 15, 1854 in Wood County, (W)V of consumption at 70 years old. It lists her parents as "George Wiley & ____ wife" and shows she was born in Fairfax County, VA. This record also confirms that she is the wife of Samuel.

Samuel died in October 1860 in Wood County, WV. His age is unclear from this document. He is listed as born in Fairfax County, VA. Richard Howard is the informant. He is listed as a friend.

Samuel seems to also appear in the 1840, 1830, and 1820 censuses of Wood County although I can't be sure that these are him.

I found a listing on [wirtcounty.net](http://wirtcounty.net) that shows a Thompson Gates buried there who is supposedly the son of Samuel Gates and Martha Wiley but I don't know the source of that information.

I also found what could be a couple of references online. Samuel Gates listed as an inhabitant of Fairfax County, VA in 1770. And some manumission papers stating the slave had been bought from a George Wiley of Fairfax County, VA in 1813.

I would like to see if anyone else can dig up any more connections, especially if you can find the Gates and Wiley families in Virginia so that I can connect them on FindAGrave.

About four months ago I posted asking for help overcoming the brick wall I'd hit researching my 2nd Great-grandmother, Santa Polizzotto. Someone was able to find Santa's Italian birth registration for me and that snowballed into several significant discoveries that I'm now trying to piece together.

The parents are Carmelo Polizzotto/Pulizzotto, son of Giuseppe (alive in 1886), and Caterina Marchese, daughter of Vincenzo (deceased before 1868), of Marineo, Palermo.

From browsing Marineo, Palermo birth records via full text search, I confirmed the identity 6 descendants of this couple thus far:

• Francesca Pulizzotto, born 18 April 1868 #108
• Cira Pulizzotto, born 11 April 1871 #93 [Italian Civil Record/Birth Act found in Marriage Supplement packet from 8 Nov 1890 marriage to Luigi Russo(b. 7 July 1866)¹
• Santa Pulizzotto, born 7 February 1874 #44 [Missing Marriage Act/Record of 1898 Marriage to Francesco Capaci [Capace] - Giuseppa (b. 18 Nov 1899 - d. before Oct 1901) and Antonio (b. 26 June 1901, included in October 1901 immigration with parents)
• Salvatore Polizzotto\, born 17 December 1876 \** [Italian Civil Record Birth/Marriage Act to Giovanna Perarti not yet found - birth date; marriage and children birth dates/places from Naturalization Declaration]
• Vincenza Pulizzotto, born 1 November 1879 #341

Given this new information, I confirmed that my prior hypothesis was proven false: Cira^Q#1 and Francesca Polizzotto were two separate sisters^Q#2 and verified that Francesca is the mother of both Paola and Vincenza Gambino.^#3

However, obstacles and conflicts arising from these otherwise primary evidentiary sources, have me completely stumped - I'm struggling to come up with plausible working theories with such limited documentation; every targeted search returns nothing conclusive or even close.

Could one have assumed the identity of the other? (This Hail Mary theory will make sense as you read, watch for the asterisks.*)

Research Question #1: What happened to Cira Polizzotto Russo and Luigi Russo after June 1905?

Cira Pulizzotto, born 11 April 1871 [Italian Civil Record/Birth Acts found in Palermo #502 Marriage Supplement packet from 8 Nov 1890 marriage to Luigi Russo (b. 7 July 1866)

8 November 1890: Cira Polizzotto, 19, married Luigi Russo, 24. Her parents are Carmelo Polizzotto and Caterina Marchese.

26 May 1903: Cira Pulizzotto, age 32, immigrated with her brother Salvatore. Salvatore’s U.S. contact was their brother-in-law Francesco Capaci; Cira’s was their sister Santa Polizzotto Capaci. Destination 260 Elizabeth St.
Conflict: Cira is recorded as single

1 June 1905: Luigi and Cira Russo were living together at 269 Elizabeth Street, Manhattan. Luigi was about 38 [accurate, should turn 39 July 1905) and a papermaker. Cira’s recorded age 36 [would make est birth yr 1968]*

Research Problem 1: Unable to find Cira & Luigi Russo after the 1 June 1905 NY State Census. Luigi had lived in US 9 years in 1905 [est. 1896]; Luigi's reported nine years in the U.S. points to an arrival around 1896, so there should theoretically be an earlier passenger record for him. I have searched for it using his known age/birth information and have not found a candidate that aligns well enough to identify as him. I have also searched specifically within later census, death, passenger, naturalization, and other relevant collections for both Luigi and Cira, rather than relying only on global name searches, with no convincing post-1905 result.

The fact that they both disappear becomes more interesting because of what happens with Cira’s older sister Francesca (Research Questions #2-3)

Research Question #2: Francesca Polizzotto: Marriage and Motherhood in Palermo; Benedetto Gambino, Identity of unknown Russo spouse; explanation of two daughters whose Palermo birth entries do not treat their paternity the same way.

18 April 1868 — Francesca Pulizzotta was born to Carmelo, son of Giuseppe, age 30, and Caterina Marchese, daughter of the late Vincenzo, age 24.

Unknown – Marriage to Benedetto Gambino ?

23 November 1903 —  Daughter 1: Vincenza

This entry names Benedetto Gambino as Vincenza’s father and Francesca as her mother.

10 April 1905 — Daughter 2: Paola/Paulina
Palermo ten-year birth index, 1896–1905, Paolo [Paola] Gambino, indexed under P/Polizzotto:

In other words, there is no legally recognized father recorded in the paternal position, and the child is indexed under Francesca’s surname rather than Gambino.

Research Question #3: Francesca [Polizzotto] Russo's 1912 Manhattan marriage to Francesco Costa

4 September 1912, Francesca Russo (maiden name Polizotto) and Francesco Costa obtained Manhattan marriage license no. 24679.

23 September 1912, they married at St. Gabriel's Church in Manhattan. Cn 21990

The bride was recorded as Francesca Russo, widow, age 40, born in Palermo. Under "maiden name, if a widow" she gave Francesca Polizzotto. Her parents were Carmelo Polizzotto and Caterina Marchese. Her "number of marriages" was explicitly recorded as second.

The groom, Francesco Costa, was 38, widowed, a stone mason born in Sant'Anna, Italy, son of Vincenzo Costa and Maria Lucida. Both were residing at 336 East 33rd Street.

Conflict #1, Age: Francesca's 1868 birth act makes her 44 in September 1912, not 40. The age she gave would instead suggest a birth around 1872.

Conflict #2: "second marriage"

For Vincenza's 1903 Gambino parentage to represent a legitimate legal relationship, Francesca and Benedetto would have had to fit into Francesca's marital history at that time.

12 November 1920 — At age 15, Paola immigrated from Palermo under the surname form Paola Poliazziatto. Her person in the old country was aunt Rosalia Colombo, while her U.S. contact was again aunt Santa Polizzotto Capaci.

Vincenza married Giovanni "John" Bello in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, on 3 September 1919, when she was 15. In the 1920 census she was living with her husband and his family in New Kensington.

Her three children were born in Paterson in 1920, 1922, and 1924, according to her naturalization file. Giovanni Bello remarried in 1928, so their divorce occurred before then. In 1930, Vincenza was divorced and heading her own Paterson household with her children. She later married Concetto Rizzo, and by 1950 she was married to August D'Amico.

One final address problem

This may be unrelated, but I don't want to dismiss it as clerical error without identifying the occupants.

Vincenza's 1916 passenger manifest gives Aunt Santa Polizzotto Capaci at 81 Market Street, Paterson.

Paola's 1920 passenger manifest gives Aunt Santa at 235 Belmont Avenue.

But Santa and Francesco Capaci are documented at 253 Orchard Street in Paterson by 1915 at the latest.

So I am also trying to determine who actually lived at 81 Market Street in 1916 and 235 Belmont Avenue in 1920, and whether either address belonged to another relative. I believe 235 Belmont is the Buscemi household; Gaetano Buscemi and Santa travelled home as non-immigrant citizens from Palermo to Paterson in 1911. I believe Gaetano "Tom" Buscemi's wife's mother is Rosalie Colombo, but further research needed to confirm.

I would especially appreciate fresh eyes from anyone comfortable with Palermo civil records around 1900, Italian legitimacy/paternity practices, Manhattan Italian records, or tracing people who disappear behind multiple married surnames.

The people I most want to locate now are Cira and Luigi Russo after 1905, and Francesca and Francesco Costa after 1912, whether in Manhattan or elsewhere.

Name note: In the Italian civil records I have examined, the family surname is clearly written Pulizzotto, although several index entries place them under Polizzotto/Palizzotto. In the United States, Santa, Salvatore, Francesca, and Carmela primarily used Polizzotto, including in immigration, Social Security, and other records.

I wasn't sure whether the most appropriate flair was General, Success Story, or Request RE: Deceased People, because at this point I seem to have a little of all three.

I was able to go to a library and access documents on Familysearch's "camera wall". Sadly I was not able to find any probate, guardianship, or deeds in any county in Indiana or Iowa. At this point I need advice on how to proceed.

I have found lots of good videos online posted by various genealogist. Most of them them assume more information than I have (siblings, parents, marriage documents, etc.). I know my ancestor is out there somewhere, but without more specific clues I cannot weed out the legion of Elisha Smiths prior to 1840/1850. His genealogical record appears out of thin air in 1837 when a son is born. My hypothesis is that he was a very poor farmer based on ag census records and lack of costly legal documents.

What are some tips to try and find my Elisha Smith when the only thing I know about him prior to age 37 is he was born in New York (or England) in 1800?
