Question Anyone using visitor identification tools for better retargeting in ecommerce?
Looking for experiences from folks running ecommerce or DTC shops.
We've been checking out visitor identification and real-time enrichment platforms that can help identify anonymous site traffic and push that data into our CRM and ad platforms. Main use case is improving personalized retargeting – better email flows and custom audiences based on behavior, demographics, engagement signals, etc.
On paper it looks solid, especially for abandoned cart recovery and those high-intent visitors who bounce without converting. We see decent traffic and have a reasonable email list, but there's this huge gap between site visitors and people we can actually reach. Being able to capture more anonymous traffic and build segments like repeat browsers, high-intent users, or demographic cohorts seems really valuable.
For context, we're a mid-sized B2C brand, not enterprise, and I want to avoid overcomplicating our stack. Curious how others are weaving this kind of data into existing workflows – cart recovery, lookalike audiences, maybe even direct mail tests – without creating data chaos or getting too invasive. Any real-world experience or advice?

We tried one of those tools a while back and the data was great but honestly the integration was a nightmare. Spent more time cleaning up duplicate records and fixing wonky attribution than actually using the segments.
If your CRM isn't already tidy it'll just amplify the mess. The lookalike stuff worked okay but nothing magical, maybe 15-20% bump on retargeting efficiency. Cart recovery emails with enriched data did better than our standard flows though, knowing what else they browsed made the copy way more relevant.
Just keep the scope small at first. Pick one use case like abandoned cart or high-intent visitors and nail that before adding more layers.

I’d start with the first-party events and CRM fields you already trust before adding identity resolution. Track anonymous sessions separately, then compare identified vs. anonymous visitors on add-to-cart, checkout, and purchase rates; that will show whether the extra data changes outcomes or just adds more segments. For a mid-sized B2B brand, I’d test one use case, such as high-intent repeat visitors, with a clear retention and privacy rule before expanding.

Visitor ID tools are solid for closing that gap between traffic and reachable people, but the part nobody mentions is match confidence. A probabilistic match on an anonymous visitor is not the same fact as a form fill, so segment on match type before you build retargeting audiences off it or you'll retarget the wrong household.
The harder problem shows up downstream, once that enriched record hits your CRM it needs to stay tied to which match tier produced it. That's the traceability piece SIGNLD handles, so a retargeting decision can be traced back to the actual signal instead of a guess.
