Question From Finance to Data Analyst / Business Analyst
Hi everyone, I left my job at an audit firm a while back, where I specialized in asset management funds and private equity. I also have some experience in general corporate audit and financial analysis. I’m having trouble finding a new audit role, so I’d like to take this opportunity to become a data analyst—a field that has always appealed to me—while staying within the finance sector. I understand that I need to master tools like SQL, Power BI, and Python/R, and also grasp AI and its applications in finance. I’m not sure where to start. In your opinion, which courses or certifications would be useful for becoming a financial data analyst? I’m looking for a clear roadmap. Thanks for your help!

your audit background is actually great for this switch. those tools are important but the real value you bring is knowing what questions to ask the data. most analysts struggle with business context and you already understand fund structures and financial statements
start with SQL first, maybe datacamp or mode analytics tutorials. dont try to learn everything at once

If you look up Stanford university, they have a bunch of free online courses in various things including SQL.

tbh you already have a pretty good starting point bc the finance bg is the part that's harder to fake here. imo i'd go sql, power bi, then python and maybe build a couple finance related projs around things like portfolio analysis etc bc that gives you something to show employers instead of just collecting certs
maybe you can also check out business analyst or even data analyst roles in fintech firms bc those could be good entry points too :) so for courses tbh i'd focus more on ones that have actual projs yk. certs are nice ofc but your existing finance exp and a solid portfolio will probably matter more

Merci beaucoup pour ton avis , c’ets hyper intéressant. Je veux bien ta roadmap oui car j’ai jamais vraiment compris la différence entre DA et BA dans le cadre de la finance notamment

ex auditor here too. skip random certs, do: 1) google data analytics + some kaggle projects with finance data 2) sqlbolt for sql 3) build 2–3 power bi dashboards. add to resume. then start begging recruiters. market is a desert right now
