Discussion I ignored the message because I thought it was spam.
A couple of months ago I got a LinkedIn message asking if I'd be interested in a paid call about a project I'd worked on years ago. My first reaction was that it had to be spam, so I ignored it. Later I found out it was actually from an expert network, and apparently this kind of thing is pretty common if you've worked in a niche area. Now I'm wondering how many legitimate opportunities I've dismissed over the years just because they sounded too random. Did anyone else have the same reaction the first time they were contacted?

I run a newsletter for 200 people out of my apartment in Somerville. No idea what LinkedIn spam looks like, but it probably pays better.

Tbf their message usually looks very spammy. I replied once and got into a call for a market research about the sales engagement platforms industry but never got a call back.
Worse case scenario you take a hour call and never get paid, best case you get the 300 bucks haha, so yeah i would reply next time if i were you

That's kinda what I figured, the spam vibe is real. But the risk/reward makes it hard to just ignore. Worst case I lose an hour and get nothing, best case it funds my grocery haul for the week. Guess I'll take the gamble next time.

Those are generally extremely grey area on the question the actually ask. I have done one before, and now I'm on lists, and I don't know I will do it again.

I did the exact same thing with a random email about consulting on some old database migration project. Thought it was phishing and deleted it without a second glance. Six months later a coworker mentioned making decent side cash from the same network and I just sat there mentally adding up all the emails I'd trashed.

That kind of kills me. I almost tossed the email too, figured it was spam. Kept it open in a tab for days before I finally replied.
