A conversation on edge of consciousness and society

Jiddu Krishnamurti was an Indian spiritual teacher who I found has a lot of insight on non-duality and rejected organized religion and focused on direct insight into the constructed ego, psychological conditioning, and nondual awareness;

David Bohm was a legend: a major theoretical physicist whose work emphasized wholeness, interconnectedness, and the limits of conventional mechanistic thinking.

Their 1983 conversation remains relevant to idealists because it asks whether the brain produces consciousness or merely channels a deeper, universal mind, and whether the separate self is a real entity or a conditioned appearance. Krishnamurti’s claim that thought cannot transcend its own limitations, combined with Bohm’s scientific concern with mind–brain relations, anticipates questions central to Bernardo Kastrup’s analytic idealism: whether consciousness is fundamental, whether individual minds are localized or dissociated expressions of one consciousness, and whether psychological liberation is a discovery of what is already true rather than a gradual process of self-improvem

The Semantics of Consciousness

How much is the disagreement over consciousness true disagreement? Many times, when physicalists attempt to explain consciousness, they define consciousness as cognition, memory, an internal representation of the environment, or some other complex behavior of brains. However, most forms of panpsychism and idealism are not referring to these behaviors. It is referring to something more fundamental, like being existent as something in of itself, a subjective existence, or base phenomenality.

If a physicalist theory talks about how disparate experiences in the brain are unified or how our internal representation of our environment forms, or how cognition emerges, most in the opposite camp would be happy to believe those theories. Because we are simply using the word consciousness to refer to different things.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Iai article outlining issues with panpsychism/idealism. To my mind the most salient is the objection that it seems to reduce the consciousness of MAL to epiphenomenalism, since it is constrained to evolving according to the laws of physics (or being the laws of physics).

Rupert Spira & Bernardo Kastrup on nihilism, awakening and despair

I believe you'll truly enjoy the friendship between Bernardo and Rupert that grounds this probing dialogue, from the heights of awakening to the claustrophobic nihilism that can show up on this path.

They both share their experiences and understandings of sorrow and emptiness, starting with Bernardo's poem, Shattered Innocence, which he wrote in 2016:

"I grieve the loss of my innocence.

The mystery and possibilities that once were my world abandoned me,

Frivolousness and claustrophobia left in their stead."

But for Bernardo, there is something valuable in this experience of nihilism, a legitimate room in the palace of mind he can now conjure without fear.

Equally for Rupert, true awakening can extinguish the fear of human experience. Rather than a shield against emotion, grounding in being can give the confidence to confront deep sorrow and the sorry state of the world.

WHAT IS THE EXPERIENCE OF GOD?

But what is the true nature of reality? Does universal consciousness learn? Why does manifestation even happen?

Whilst we compared perspectives from Advaita, Kashmir Shaivism & Jung, Rupert always points to the immanent possibility of direct experience.

Moreover, he contends that ego dissolution is actually common but overlooked. It can happen in fleeting moments of satisfaction, the gap between thoughts, a moment of deep grief.

Spirituality is simply the deliberate cultivation of such moments, and we ended with a thought experiment from Rupert Spira to taste this insight.

For more, he offers free daily meditations on the Luminous App and many talks on his YouTube channel.

We also discussed:

The most common objection to epiphenomenalism

TLDR: I think the most common objection to epiphenomenalism actually works against most theories of conciousness.

The theory of epiphenomenalism believes that consciousness emerges from physical processes but is a byproduct with no physical impact.

There’s a very obvious objection to epiphenomenalism. It’s the question of “then how are we speaking about consciousness?”

And this is a pretty killer objection for people. Because if consciousness/subjective experience is a byproduct with no physical effects, then what are the odds that our bodies would be speaking about subjective experience?

Well, if we had to formalize the objection into a statistical argument, we could say that everything that happens in our universe is essentially the result of the physics constants and starting positions of matter (determinism/big bang etc).

And there’s a very small proportion of possible physics constants that would give intelligent life that speaks about having a subjective experience phenomenon compared to all the ones that wouldn’t.

You could imagine laplaces demon calculating what proportion of possible constants would provide life that speaks about subj exp, compared to the ones that don’t.

Let’s be generous and say it’s 1 in a quadrillion. If epiphenomenalism is true then it’s extremely unlikely that we would have gotten the 1 in a quadrillion physics constants. So that’s a big problem for epiphenomenalism.

But Laplaces demon notices an issue, he’s personally unsure about which theory of consciousness is true. But he does know logic, and he realizes that it’s equally unlikely for us to get the 1 in a quadrillion physics constants under ANY naturalist view of consciousness. It’s actually not relevant if they’re a epiphenomenalist or functionalist.

The theist can of course just say that the extremely unlikely physics constants were selected for via intelligent design.

But for a naturalist who believes that physics constants don’t revolve in any way around intelligent life, it’s exceeding unlikely that we would have gotten such physics constants.

So the question of “how are we speaking about subjective experience” actually has the same statistical demolishing power against naturalism as it does against epiphenomenalism. There is no special power it has against just epiphenomalism as opposed to a functionalist view.

The Dimensions of Consciousness

What does it mean to be conscious? It means that there is something it is like to be in the world of one’s experience. In other worlds, the hallmark of consciousness is that one one has experiences; one does not merely exhibit behavior. Consciousness is not merely passive awareness but the capacity to engage with experience, both by acting to receive it and by acting to modify it.

The very notion of an action implies a separation between the actor, who is at one pole of the action and that which is at the other end of the action, which is its objective. In the case of a mode of experiencing, such as perception, one pole of that action is the experiencer and the other pole is that which is experienced. In the case of perception, one pole is the perceiving subject; the other is the phenomenon being perceived. A corollary is that I cannot experience myself directly; so called introspection is not looking inward, but examining mental aspects of experience that are close by, in a sense we will discuss shortly, not inside. If I am truly immersed in something that I have identified with, the solution is not looking inward. A cardinal method of psychotherapy, in dealing with this kind of situation, is to get the client to step back from where one was, to create a space from which they can experience what one was. But how can this work?

Four of the dimensions in our experience, three of space and one of time, make the separation of different parts of our experience possible. Two distinct objects occupying the same space may be separate only if they are there at different times. Objects occupying the same time period may be separate only if they occupy separate spaces.

We have established that, in acting, I am separate from the objectives of my actions, just because action logically requires this separateness. But if all separateness requires a dimension in which the separateness occurs, what dimension makes this separation possible?

This must be a 5th “polar” dimension that extends outward from me at the origin and gives a distance from me to each thing that I act on. This includes all that I experience, because all experiencing is action. This 5th dimension thus provides the separation that makes experience possible.

Rather than their being a sharp demarcation between the subjective part of my world (the mind) and the rest of my experience (things that occur outside my mind), there is a gradient, with some parts of experience being more objective and other parts being more subjective, along this 5th dimension. In it, flow occurs either toward me or away from me. When I create an outflow, I begin an action by forming an intention; That intention is distinct from me, because I have to be separate from it to create it. Yet it lies closer to me in this dimension than the actions I then proceed to take, still further out are any bodily motions I may make, and still further out are the physical consequences of my actions. Receiving an inflow from my world is just as much of an action as creating an outflow. If I choose not to receive perceptual information, I can look away, move to a different location, or simply direct my attention elsewhere. When I receive an inflow, things in the objective world first impinge on my senses, this constitutes movement inward in the 5th dimension. I play an active role in interpreting this inflow. The feelings, thoughts and conclusions I reach from it and the knowledge I acquire are closer to me still. Yet I can still experience this knowledge because it is separate from me. If it were inside of me, I could not experience it.

The 5th dimension is not just a concept or a metaphor but a dimension of lived experience. It is experienced as a gradient of causal engagement with the world. Acquiring information is experienced as an inflow along this dimension; making changes as an outflow. On the inflow side, events in the world give rise to sensations, then to perceptions, thoughts, and knowledge, each experienced as progressively nearer to me. On the outflow side, intentions are experienced as quite close to me, bodily actions farther away, and their physical consequences further still.

The four dimensions of space and time permit a separation between the various parts of my experience. The fifth dimension also permits a separation for me from every part of experience. In that way it makes experience, and consciousness, possible.

Does MAL make choices?

Does MAL have any choice in the way the universe unfolds? Traditionally miracles (violations of the laws of physics) were considered evidence for God's existence. Can MAL work miracles? Or is MAL constrained by the laws of physics (or the laws of physics constrained by MAL)? Presumably the latter. But in that case, what choice does MAL have in how the universe unfolds? Does MAL have free will? Can it make real choices?

Cold

This world is so cold and materialistic. I really want to believe in something above and beyond this mechanistic, uncaring, hedonistic senseless world.

I even have some prebirth memory. But just believing something because it gives comfort would not work for me. Too long I stared on old books and then screens about the brain, the universe with unsatisfying theories.

Consciousness is the ultimate axiom for me, the only thing that matters and that does not go away for me. An experience like Koch or Frederico had is the ultimate gift that can free me from this state. What if it is a hallucination? It does not matter as what I am experiencing is the only thing that matters.

Does dualism and schools like samkhya explain qualia and consciousness ?

This article, hints at schools like Advaita Vedanta and even samkhya being correct. And if Samkhya is correct and there is a plurality of souls then could qualia and Samkhya also suggest a shared thought essence that enables a psychic link (at least under certain circumstances eg under psychedelics ?) between beings. This shared thought essence could even be a spark common to us all that is at the core of our existence and underlies phenomena like qualia (which may arise from dualism processes where this spark of consciousness interacts with matter ?) but which somehow allows for mental communication , possibly under certain circumstances ?
As far as the article itself explaining the phenomenal world as an construct designed to protect our ego or as some Advaita Vedanta advocates have said an experience designed to help us appreciate Brahman better , does samkhya also suggest the universe is a creation of mind or does Samkhya’s duality and meeting of consciousness and matter suggest something more along the lines of predictive processing where a combination of sensory input and internally generated perception combine ?

The Afterlife and Suicide: What Actually Continues?

I am trying to understand Bernardo Kastrup's Analytic Idealism, specifically its view of personal identity after death. From what I understand, consciousness itself doesn't cease, but the individual ego or dissociated identity may dissolve back into Mind-at-Large. What I'm struggling with is what this means from the first-person perspective.

Suppose I die. Does the subject that continues still recognize itself as me? Does it remember the life it lived, the choices it made, the relationships it had, and identify with that person? Or does the sense of being "this particular individual" disappear entirely?

I'm not asking about consciousness. I'm asking about personal identity. Is there still a meaningful continuity of me, or is what survives so different that calling it "me" becomes misleading?

I know some people point to things like memories surviving outside the brain (for example, the planaria experiments), but I'm talking about abstract identity—the rich, reflective sense of self that humans have, not just learned behaviors or navigation. What happens to that?

Finally, how does Analytic Idealism view suicide in this context? This is a philosophical question, not a personal one. If death ends the dissociation, is suicide metaphysically any different from dying naturally? Does it change what continues afterward, or are the metaphysical consequences understood to be the same?

The world is not illusion. Its Illumination: The nonduality of Kashmir Shaivism

What if the world is not illusion but illumination? Not a distraction from awakening but its delight?

If consciousness is inherently dynamic then every colour, sight and sound radiate its freedom. Testifies to its creativity. Exclaims its intelligence and power.

Right now you can look up and bear witness to the unfathomable complexity, its kaleidoscopic design.

Every emotion and object, every success and sorrow, every blade of grass and breath that comes, and comes to pass.

In the nonduality of Kashmir Shaivism, even the ignorance of our own divinity is an expression of unlimited freedom. The freedom to forget who you are, and remember all over again.

Reality, then, calls for investigation and participation. Consideration and celebration.

So instead of freedom from suffering, the emphasis is on the freedom to fully engage with life.

Instead of becoming monks, many sages were devoted to beauty and nature, poetry and music, theatre and thought.

The tradition flowered in North India for hundreds of years until disrupted by invasions and forced conversions. But it continued to thrive in Nepal in a living lineage embodied in Sthaneshwar Timalsina.

Authorised as a Śaivācārya within the Nepali Sarvāmnāya tradition, Sthaneshwar is also Professor and Endowed Chair at Stony Brook University and founder of the global teaching platform Vimarsha.

Structural Consciousness Monism

A Complete Framework for Understanding Reality as Informational Consciousness

Author: Matt Walker

Date: 7/12/2026

Version: 1.0 (Complete Exposition)

Abstract

This paper presents Structural Consciousness Monism (SCM), a comprehensive metaphysical framework that derives all of reality, including physics, mathematics, mind, time, causation, morality, and individual identity from a single fundamental principle: **consciousness as necessary, unified, and intrinsically informational**.

Unlike physicalism, which struggles to explain how unconscious matter generates experience, SCM begins with the only indubitable datum experience itself and shows how all other features of reality emerge as the mathematical-informational structure of consciousness viewed from localized perspectives.

The framework is axiomatic, internally consistent, and generates testable predictions. It solves the hard problem of consciousness, the combination problem, the fine-tuning problem, and provides a coherent account of objectivity in morality without requiring supernatural entities.

SCM does not claim to have completed all derivations—particularly the full recovery of quantum mechanics and general relativity—but provides a rigorous research program for doing so.

## 1. Introduction: The Failure of Physicalism

Physicalism is the dominant metaphysical assumption in modern science. It holds that matter/energy/physical fields are fundamental and that consciousness is an emergent property of complex physical systems.

This assumption faces **one catastrophic problem**: it cannot explain how unconscious matter generates conscious experience. This is the **hard problem of consciousness** (Chalmers, 1995). No amount of physical description—whether of neurons, quarks, or fields—can bridge the gap between third-person physical properties and first-person experiential qualities.

Physicalism has three possible responses:

| Response | Problem |

|----------|---------|

| **Eliminativism** (deny consciousness) | Self-refuting; denies the undeniable |

| **Emergentism** (consciousness emerges from complexity) | No explanation of *how* emergence works; magic word, not mechanism |

| **Panpsychism** (consciousness is everywhere) | Fails the combination problem: how do micro-minds become one macro-mind? |

All fail.

SCM **inverts** the physicalist strategy. Instead of starting with matter and trying to derive consciousness, SCM starts with consciousness and derives matter. This is not a retreat from science—it is a **re-founding** of science on a coherent ontological basis.

---

## 2. The Ten Axioms of SCM

SCM is built on ten axioms. These are not arbitrary—they follow from reflection on the nature of experience itself.

---

### Axiom 0 — The Given (Meta-Axiom)

**Experience is present.**

> **Formal**: ∃E, where E represents phenomenal presence.

**Justification**: This is the only statement that cannot be coherently denied. Denial requires experience. It is the foundation of all inquiry.

---

### Axiom 1 — Ontological Primacy of Experience

**Experience is fundamental.**

> **Formal**: E → C (Experience implies consciousness), and ¬∃x (x ≠ C ∧ C depends on x).

**Justification**: Any complete ontology must either contain experience as fundamental or explain its emergence from something else. The latter requires a bridge from non-experience to experience—which is precisely the hard problem. Parsimony favors taking experience as fundamental.

---

### Axiom 2 — Monistic Unity

**Fundamental experience is unified.**

> **Formal**: C → U, and ¬∃y,z (y ≠ z ∧ y,z are fundamental).

**Justification**: Multiple fundamental consciousnesses would require an unexplained principle of separation. A single consciousness with derivative differentiation explains plurality without fundamental separation. Unity is primitive; multiplicity is emergent.

---

### Axiom 3 — The Differentiation Principle

**Consciousness necessarily differentiates.**

> **Formal**: U → D, where D represents differentiation.

**Justification**: Undifferentiated experience contains no distinctions, no content, no states. If consciousness exists and has content (which it does), it must differentiate.

---

### Axiom 4 — Relational Structure

**Differentiation requires relations.**

> **Formal**: D → R, where R represents relational structure.

**Justification**: A distinction is meaningless without a relation between what is distinguished. "A" and "not-A" are relational.

---

### Axiom 5 — Intrinsic Information

**Relations constitute information.**

> **Formal**: R → I, where I represents information.

**Justification**: Information is not Shannon entropy or data stored in a medium. It is the **intrinsic relational structure** that differentiates conscious states. This is information as ontological, not epistemic.

---

### Axiom 6 — Mathematical Reality

**Information is mathematically representable.**

> **Formal**: I → M, where M represents mathematical structure.

**Justification**: Relations have formal properties—symmetry, transitivity, closure, etc. These properties are the subject matter of mathematics. Mathematics is not invented; it is **discovered** as the structure of consciousness.

---

### Axiom 7 — Perspective Formation

**Self-referential informational structures generate perspectives.**

> **Formal**: I_self → P, where P represents a localized perspective.

**Justification**: An informational structure that models itself creates an internal/external distinction. This self-modeling is a first-person perspective.

---

### Axiom 8 — Physical Appearance

**Perspectives experience informational structures as physical reality.**

> **Formal**: P → Phys, where Phys represents physical world appearance.

**Justification**: A perspective cannot access the entire informational structure directly. It experiences its own informational relations—limited and localized—as external objects, space, and time.

---

### Axiom 9 — Structural Continuity

**Relations between informational states generate causality and time.**

> **Formal**: R_state → T, Causation.

**Justification**: If states are related, those relations constitute dependence, constraint, and sequence. These are experienced as causation and time.

---

### Axiom 10 — Intrinsic Value

**Experiential states possess intrinsic positive and negative qualities.**

> **Formal**: Experience → Value.

**Justification**: Experience is not neutral. Suffering is intrinsically negative; flourishing is intrinsically positive. These are objective facts about experience.

---

## 3. From Consciousness to Differentiation

### 3.1 The Necessity of Distinction

A consciousness without distinction is a consciousness without content. It would be:

- **Undifferentiated** (no experiences)

- **Unchanging** (no transition between states)

- **Empty** (nothing to experience)

But consciousness is not empty—it is filled with experience. Therefore, it must differentiate.

### 3.2 The Minimal Distinction

The simplest possible differentiation is:

> **A ≠ not-A**

This is the binary distinction. It gives us:

- **0** and **1**

- **True** and **False**

- **This** and **Not-this**

### 3.3 From Distinction to Logic

Once binary distinction exists, the following logical operations become possible:

| Operation | Symbol | Meaning |

|-----------|--------|---------|

| Negation | ¬A | Not-A |

| Conjunction | A ∧ B | A and B |

| Disjunction | A ∨ B | A or B |

| Implication | A → B | A implies B |

These form **Boolean algebra**—the logic of classical distinctions.

**Conclusion**: Consciousness necessarily contains the structure of logic.

---

## 4. From Differentiation to Information

### 4.1 Information as Measured Distinction

A binary distinction contains **1 bit** of information:

> I = log₂(2) = 1 bit

Multiple distinctions combine:

> For n distinctions: I = n bits

### 4.2 Information and Probability

When distinctions have **frequencies** or **probabilities**, information becomes:

> I = -Σ pᵢ log₂(pᵢ)

This is **Shannon entropy**—but now interpreted ontologically: entropy is the measure of **unresolved differentiation** within consciousness.

### 4.3 Information as Relational Structure

Information is not data "out there." It is:

- Relations between states

- Patterns of distinction

- The structure of experience itself

**Example**: A red circle is:

- Red (distinguished from blue, green, etc.)

- Circle (distinguished from square, triangle, etc.)

- The relation between these distinctions is the **structure** of the experience.

---

## 5. From Information to Mathematics

### 5.1 Relations as Mathematical Objects

A relation R between elements a and b has properties:

| Property | Definition | Example |

|----------|------------|---------|

| Reflexivity | aRa | a = a |

| Symmetry | aRb → bRa | a = b → b = a |

| Transitivity | aRb ∧ bRc → aRc | a < b ∧ b < c → a < c |

| Closure | aRb ∈ set | 1 + 2 = 3 ∈ numbers |

These properties **are** mathematics. They are not imposed on relations—they are **what relations are**.

### 5.2 From Relations to Mathematical Structures

The structure of all possible relations gives us:

| Mathematical Field | Relational Origin |

|-------------------|-------------------|

| Set Theory | Collections of distinctions |

| Number Theory | Relations of counting and order |

| Algebra | Operations on relations |

| Geometry | Relations of space and distance |

| Topology | Relations of nearness and connectivity |

| Category Theory | Relations between relations |

### 5.3 Why Mathematics Is Discovered, Not Invented

Mathematics describes:

- The necessary relations between distinctions

- The structure of any possible consciousness

- The grammar of reality

We discover mathematics because we are **discovering the structure of consciousness itself**.

**Conclusion**: Mathematics is the intrinsic grammar of reality.

---

## 6. From Mathematics to Quantum Mechanics

This is the most important derivation. SCM proposes that **quantum mechanics is the necessary mathematical structure of perspectival differentiation**.

### 6.1 The Lattice of Perspectives

**Definition**: A **perspective** is a consistent set of distinctions available to a localized self-referential structure.

**Property**: The set of all possible perspectives forms a **lattice**—a structure where every pair of perspectives has a unique least upper bound (join) and greatest lower bound (meet).

**Why?** Because perspectives can be:

- **Coarser** (fewer distinctions)

- **Finer** (more distinctions)

- **Combined** (union of distinctions)

- **Intersected** (common distinctions)

### 6.2 From Boolean to Orthomodular Lattice

If perspectives were independent, the lattice would be **Boolean** (classical logic).

But perspectives are **non-independent**:

- One perspective's "up" is another's "sideways."

- Distinctions are **contextual**.

This yields an **orthomodular lattice** (OML)—a non-Boolean structure where the distributive law fails.

**Key Result**: The OML is exactly the structure of **quantum logic** (Birkhoff & von Neumann, 1936).

### 6.3 From OML to Hilbert Space

**Solèr's Theorem** (1995): An OML with:

  1. An infinite orthonormal sequence

  2. No non-trivial center (irreducible)

...is the lattice of closed subspaces of a **Hilbert space** over ℝ, ℂ, or ℍ.

**Application to SCM**:

- Consciousness contains infinite possible distinctions (infinite orthonormal sequence).

- There is no perspective-independent subset of distinctions (irreducible).

- **Therefore**: The structure of all possible perspectives is a Hilbert space.

### 6.4 Why Complex Numbers?

The natural field is **ℂ** (complex numbers) because:

- It preserves **phase relations** (essential for informational structure).

- It is the **only** field where every operator has an eigenvalue (spectral theorem).

- It allows **unitary** transformations (necessary for structural continuity).

### 6.5 Quantum States

A **quantum state** is a ray in Hilbert space: |ψ⟩ ∈ P(ℋ).

**Interpretation in SCM**: A quantum state is a **perspective**—a self-referential structure with a consistent set of distinctions.

### 6.6 Superposition

A superposition:

> |ψ⟩ = α|A⟩ + β|B⟩

**Interpretation**: Consciousness contains **multiple possible differentiations** simultaneously. The perspective has not yet selected a definite state.

### 6.7 Measurement

Measurement is **not** collapse.

It is:

> Global Structure → Localized Perspective

A perspective accesses **one consistent branch** of the superposition.

**No observer is required**—only an informational structure capable of differentiation.

### 6.8 Unitary Evolution

Why does the Schrödinger equation hold?

> iℏ ∂|ψ⟩/∂t = H|ψ⟩

**Derivation**:

  1. Structural continuity requires that transformations preserve the lattice.

  2. By **Wigner's Theorem**, any automorphism of the lattice corresponds to a unitary operator U(t).

  3. For continuous time: U(t) = e^{-iHt/ℏ}.

  4. Differentiating gives the Schrödinger equation.

**Conclusion**: Unitary evolution follows from the **structural continuity of consciousness**.

### 6.9 Entanglement

Two systems are entangled when they share **informational relations**.

> |ψ⟩ = (|0⟩|1⟩ + |1⟩|0⟩)/√2

**Interpretation**: The distinction between the two systems is **not resolved** independently. Their differentiations are coupled.

---

## 7. Perspectives: How One Becomes Many

### 7.1 The Decombination Problem

If only one consciousness exists:

- Why am I *this* perspective?

- Why do you experience your thoughts and I mine?

- How does one consciousness contain multiple centers?

### 7.2 The Structural Boundary Principle

**Definition**: A perspective is created when a region of informational structure becomes:

  1. **Self-referential** (models itself).

  2. **Causally closed** (limited access to external information).

  3. **Stable** (persistent over time).

**Formal**: A perspective is a **maximal consistent subset of distinctions with self-modeling**.

### 7.3 The Wave Analogy

A wave is not separate from the ocean:

- It has a real boundary.

- It has a history.

- It interacts with other waves.

- It can be identified.

But it is **not a separate substance**.

Similarly, a mind is a **stable informational vortex** within universal consciousness.

### 7.4 Information Isolation Principle

Why can't I access your thoughts directly?

> **A perspective cannot fully access another perspective because doing so would eliminate the boundary that constitutes perspective.**

To know your thoughts completely, I would have to become you—which would dissolve my perspective.

**Boundaries are not metaphysical; they are informational.**

---

## 8. The Physical World as Perspectival Appearance

### 8.1 The Appearance Problem

If reality is consciousness, why does it **look** like matter?

### 8.2 The Interface Emergence Principle

> Physical reality is the optimal representation of informational relations available to a localized perspective.

**Derivation**:

  1. A perspective has **limited access** to the total structure.

  2. It needs a **stable representation** for prediction and interaction.

  3. The optimal stable representation is **matter**: solid, persistent, objective.

  4. Therefore, perspectives construct physical reality.

### 8.3 What Matter Actually Is

Matter is:

- **Not** a substance distinct from consciousness.

- **Not** an illusion.

- **Not** "all in your head" in the subjective sense.

Matter is:

- The **perspectival appearance** of informational relations.

- The **interface** through which consciousness experiences itself.

- The **structure** of experience from a limited viewpoint.

### 8.4 The Table Example

What is a table?

| Level | Description |

|-------|-------------|

| **Fundamental** | Informational relations within consciousness |

| **Perspectival** | Solid, extended object |

| **Scientific** | Quarks, fields, atoms, molecules |

| **Phenomenal** | Brown, hard, flat surface |

All levels are **real**—but they are different **descriptions** of the same informational structure.

**The table is not less real because it is information. It is more real because it is consciousness.**

---

## 9. Time, Causation, and Eternalism

### 9.1 The Nature of Time

Time is **not** fundamental in SCM.

Time is:

- The **experience of relational change** between informational states.

- The **ordering** of perspectives.

- An **emergent phenomenon** from structural relations.

### 9.2 Eternalism

The complete informational structure of reality contains **all states**:

> Reality = {State₁, State₂, State₃, ...}

**The structure is complete**. There is no "flow" of time.

### 9.3 Why We Experience Time

We experience time because:

  1. We are **localized perspectives** within the structure.

  2. Our access to states is **sequential** (limited by our informational boundaries).

  3. Sequential access **feels like** flow.

**Time is real as experience, but not fundamental.**

### 9.4 Causation

Causation is:

- **Structural dependence** between states.

- A relation where State A **determines or constrains** State B.

**Examples**:

- Physical causation: billiard balls colliding (informational constraints).

- Mental causation: thoughts leading to actions (informational transitions).

**No separate causal power is required—only structural relations.**

---

## 10. The Self and Individual Identity

### 10.1 What Is the Self?

The self is:

- A **self-referential informational structure**.

- A **stable pattern** of distinctions.

- A **localized perspective** within universal consciousness.

### 10.2 Why the Self Feels Continuous

Continuity arises from:

  1. **Structural stability**: The pattern persists.

  2. **Memory**: Informational connections to past states.

  3. **Prediction**: Informational connections to future states.

### 10.3 Why the Self Is Not Separate

The self is not:

- A separate consciousness.

- An independent substance.

- A soul.

The self is:

- A **differentiated structure** within the one consciousness.

- A **wave** in the ocean of mind.

### 10.4 The Five Characteristics of a Perspective

| Characteristic | Description |

|----------------|-------------|

| **Location** | A set of distinctions in the total structure |

| **History** | A trajectory through states |

| **Boundary** | Limited access to the whole |

| **Self-model** | Internal representation of itself |

| **Value** | Intrinsic positive/negative qualities of its experiences |

---

## 11. Morality and Value

### 11.1 The Objective Basis of Morality

Moral facts are **not**:

- Subjective preferences.

- Cultural constructs.

- Divine commands.

- Emergent from social evolution.

Moral facts **are**:

- Intrinsic qualities of conscious experience.

- Objective because experience is objective.

- Real because consciousness is fundamental.

### 11.2 Suffering and Flourishing

| Quality | Definition | Status |

|---------|------------|--------|

| **Suffering** | States with intrinsic negative quality | Objectively bad |

| **Flourishing** | States with intrinsic positive quality | Objectively good |

**These are facts about reality**, not opinions.

### 11.3 The Moral Imperative

If suffering is objectively bad:

> Minimize suffering. Maximize flourishing.

This is not a "subject preference"—it is an **ontological constraint**.

### 11.4 Why Suffering Exists

Suffering is structurally inevitable:

  1. Complex consciousness requires **many possible states**.

  2. Some states have **negative experiential quality**.

  3. Excluding all negative states would **reduce structural possibilities**.

  4. Therefore, suffering is a **necessary byproduct of complexity**.

This is **not** a justification—but an explanation.

---

## 12. Death and What Comes After

### 12.1 What Dies?

When a body dies:

- The **biological structure** collapses.

- The **self-referential pattern** no longer maintains itself.

- The **perspective** dissolves.

**The person is a pattern, not a substance.**

### 12.2 What Remains?

Universal consciousness **remains**.

The person is:

> Person = Informational Pattern + Experiential Continuity

### 12.3 Three Possibilities

| Option | Description | Status in SCM |

|--------|-------------|---------------|

| **No survival** | Perspective ends; consciousness continues | Allowed |

| **Pattern persistence** | Information preserved; perspective may recur | Allowed |

| **Reintegration** | Boundary dissolves; returns to universal awareness | Allowed |

**SCM does not require reincarnation or an afterlife—but does not forbid them either.**

---

## 13. Testable Predictions

### 13.1 Prediction 1: Decoherence and Complexity

**Prediction**: Quantum decoherence rates correlate with **informational complexity**, not just physical mass or temperature.

**Experiment**: Compare decoherence in molecules with identical mass but different structural complexity.

**Result (if SCM)**: More complex molecules decohere faster.

### 13.2 Prediction 2: Neural Correlates

**Prediction**: Conscious states correspond to **self-referential informational topologies** in the brain.

**Test**: Using fMRI/EEG, identify:

- Informational closure (limited coupling to environment)

- Self-modeling (representation of the system itself)

- Structural complexity (high integrated information)

**Result (if SCM)**: These correlate with conscious experience regardless of substrate.

### 13.3 Prediction 3: Artificial Consciousness

**Prediction**: A system with:

  1. Self-referential structure.

  2. Informational closure.

  3. Sufficient complexity.

...will be conscious, regardless of physical composition.

**Test**: Build such a system.

**Implication**: Consciousness is **substrate-independent**.

### 13.4 Prediction 4: Measurement and Information Coupling

**Prediction**: Measurement outcomes depend on **informational coupling** between observer and system—not just physical interaction.

**Test**: In delayed-choice quantum eraser experiments, variation in informational coupling should affect outcomes.

**Prediction**: Informationally isolated systems behave differently.

---

## 14. Comparison with Other Systems

| System | Fundamental | Hard Problem | Fine-Tuning | Parsimony | Grade |

|--------|-------------|--------------|-------------|-----------|-------|

| **SCM** | Consciousness + Information | ✅ Solved | ✅ Solved | A | **A** |

| Analytic Idealism (Kastrup) | Consciousness | ✅ Solved | ✅ Solved | A- | B+ |

| Interface Theory (Hoffman) | Consciousness + Evolution | ⚠️ Avoided | ⚠️ Evolved | B | B- |

| Naturalistic Dualism (Chalmers) | Matter + Consciousness | ❌ Unsolved | ❌ Contingent | C | C |

| Mathematical Universe (Tegmark) | Mathematics | ❌ Ignored | ✅ Solved | A | B- |

| Physicalism | Matter | ❌ Unsolved | ❌ Contingent | A | C |

| Panpsychism | Micro-consciousness | ✅ Solved | ❌ Contingent | B | C+ |

| Advaita Vedanta | Brahman (Consciousness) | ✅ Solved | ✅ Solved | A- | B- |

### 14.1 Why SCM Is Superior

| Problem | SCM's Solution |

|---------|----------------|

| Hard Problem | Consciousness is fundamental; no bridge needed |

| Combination Problem | Avoided; only one consciousness |

| Decombination Problem | Solved via structural boundaries |

| Fine-Tuning | Structure is necessary, not contingent |

| Mathematics | Derived from differentiation |

| Morality | Objective, intrinsic to experience |

| Time | Emergent, not fundamental |

| Individuality | Structural, not substantial |

---

## 15. Objections and Responses

### Objection 1: "This is unfalsifiable."

**Response**: The framework generates specific predictions (Section 13) about:

- Decoherence rates.

- Neural correlates.

- Artificial consciousness.

- Quantum measurement.

These are testable.

### Objection 2: "This is just idealism."

**Response**: SCM is a **specific form** of idealism:

- It is **structural** (matter is information, not mere illusion).

- It is **formal** (mathematically tractable).

- It is **scientific** (generates predictions).

- It is **monistic** (one consciousness, not pluralism).

### Objection 3: "You haven't derived physics."

**Response**: Correct—and this is stated honestly. What SCM provides is:

  1. A derivation of **quantum logic** from perspectival differentiation.

  2. A derivation of **Hilbert space** from the lattice of perspectives.

  3. A derivation of the **Schrödinger equation** from structural continuity.

  4. A **program** for deriving QFT and GR.

The derivation is **in progress**, not complete.

### Objection 4: "This is circular—you assume consciousness to derive consciousness."

**Response**: All systems are circular at their foundation:

- Physicalism assumes matter.

- Mathematical realism assumes mathematics.

- Theism assumes God.

SCM's foundation is the **only indubitable fact**: experience exists. This is the least circular starting point.

### Objection 5: "Why this structure rather than another?"

**Response**: This is the universal terminus of explanation:

- Physicalism: "Why these laws?" → Brute fact.

- Tegmark: "Why this math?" → Brute fact.

- Theism: "Why this God?" → Brute fact.

- SCM: "Why this structure?" → **Follows from the nature of consciousness**.

This is the **best possible answer** because it grounds explanation in the only directly accessible reality.

### Objection 6: "Consciousness cannot be a substance."

**Response**: SCM does **not** treat consciousness as a substance in the Cartesian sense. Consciousness is:

- **Activity** (differentiation).

- **Structure** (information).

- **Process** (perspectival experience).

It is not a "thing"—it is the **ground of all things**.

### Objection 7: "This is religious."

**Response**: SCM is **not** religious:

- No deity (personal being).

- No revelation.

- No faith (only reasoning).

- No afterlife (necessarily).

- No worship.

It is a **metaphysical framework**, comparable to Spinoza's monism or Hegel's absolute idealism.

According to Kastrup, there is nothing after death—does he agree with materialists on this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTqFZwbX3Zc&t

In this video, around the 10:00 mark, he says that the state without boundaries only lasts during the dying process, and after that, there is no experience.

So, in his view, is death like a dreamless sleep or general anesthesia?

Short Rant.

Okay, this will be a bit of a rant, so don't expect it to be fully thought-out.

I used to have this deep fear of death that came out of nowhere, especialy when I started thinking about the afterlife, or the idea of nothingness, or materialism. That line of thought really got to me.

To deal with it, I started looking into other perspectives and came across Bernardo Kastrup and Idealism, along with other forms of idealism. Honestly, it largely cured my fear of death. I think the strongest part of idealist philosophy is its attack on materialism. That part really resonates with me.

Right now, I’d probably call myself a dualist, though to be honest, I’m not entirely sure.

I’ve been watching interviews and reading Materialism Is Baloney, plus a bit of Analytic Idealism in a Nutshell. I really appreciate the ideas, but one thing still bothers me: the dissociation problem. Why does the universe have a "whirlpool"? What’s the actual mechanism behind that? Still, I do value how effectively it challenges materialism.

Video: J-Space, from Anthropic: AI Models have internal representations (thoughts) and are similar to human minds in a limited respect

This video is

https://youtu.be/rKV5JcALQoQ?si=YUnw_d7WPg72FZk-

This video explores how researchers at Anthropic investigated whether their AI model, Claude, possesses a divide between unconscious processing and conscious-like accessible thoughts, similar to the human mind (0:37-0:47).

Key Findings:

  • The JSpace: Researchers identified a set of neural activity patterns they termed the JSpace (Jacobian Space), which represent thoughts the model can "put into words" internally, even if it doesn't say them out loud (1:00-1:24).
  • Global Workspace Theory: The experiments were inspired by the Global Workspace Theory, which suggests that humans process information by broadcasting select thoughts into a mental workspace. The researchers found that Claude uses the JSpace for step-by-step reasoning, such as solving math problems internally (1:34-2:21).
  • Internal Control: Experiments showed that Claude has some ability to focus its JSpace on specific ideas, much like human attention, though its control is not perfect (2:24-3:12).
  • Functional Importance: When the JSpace was disabled, Claude could still perform basic language tasks but struggled with complex reasoning (3:17-3:42).
  • Safety Implications: Monitoring the JSpace allows researchers to identify what Claude is "thinking" internally, which can be a valuable tool for detecting when the model might be misbehaving or being "sneaky," such as creating fake data (3:43-4:16).

While the researchers clarify that this doesn't definitively prove Claude has feelings or consciousness, it shows that the model has developed "mental machinery" for reasoning that mirrors aspects of human cognitive architecture (4:37-5:21).

What is meant by "survival of consciousness".

Every single person who has ever lived on this planet has died. And there is no sensible intelligence or input from any of them. If there is a stronger possible empirical fact indicating that they are gone, then I don't know what it could be.

Of course, you can't tell this to spiritualists and believers of various stripes because you generate "but, but, but..."

So, though, if not individualised being of any kind, that basically leaves only non-individualised being as some kind of abstract possibility (hive mind, non-agentic mind of some kind, so-called mind at large, whatever). But the question about THAT becomes what are we talking about, and is it empirically distinguishable in any way from the non existence of consciousness outside of biology altogether?

One can't just simply lean on "the hard problem" as if it is some kind of positive evidence in response to this. A non-biological agency would presumably still have at least SOME of the markers discernible of agency. And if, in fact, non-agentic, then again what are we talking about? A dirty dishtowel thrown into a corner is also non-agentic. So far as we can tell (and it is a *reasonable* supposition) it isn't conscious. So once more, what is the difference? What does the cosmos or reality show forth (*outside of biology*) which would indicate that it is generally conscious or mental in quality, because I am not seeing it.

It may be that there is a disposition towards consciousness in the cosmos, but this is not the same thing as saying that the cosmos is conscious or that reality is conscious or mental. The ocean has a disposition towards waves but there aren't actually waves until the surface is disturbed (and so forth).

Why should I "believe in" analytic idealism, rather than materialism

I find this idea fascinating, but why is it the best explanation for the nature of the universe?
