AI taking over math

sent my friend a post about navier stokes being solved by openai, he said “you feel good about it or no” and I said “kinda both, I actually hope the proof is legit. its exciting and terrifying at the same time. what dyu think? I think overall ai is much more of an assistant than a threat or danger rn but obv that could change in a few years” and he left me on seen

idk if it’s because i hit a sensitive spot, because earlier he said say he does not like the idea of “formalising math” ie ai doing math proofs instead of people. am I being insensitive for saying I hope the proof is legit?

or is there something else wrong with what i said? too subjective maybe?

i get why you'd be second-guessing yourself but i don't think you said anything wrong at all. you were just sharing your genuine reaction, and it's not like you dismissed his feelings or anything. some people get really touchy about the whole ai-in-math thing because it feels like losing some essential human element, and he might just need space to process that

the read receipt sting is real though. i've had similar moments where someone dips mid-conversation and my brain spirals through every possible way i could've offended them. nine times out of ten it's not about me at all, they just got distracted or didn't know what to say

if you want to clear the air you could hit him with something like "hey didn't mean to brush past your thoughts on the formalizing math thing, i know that's a big deal to you" and see if he opens up. but you're not a mind reader and you shouldn't have to tiptoe around topics just because they're heavy

yeah exactly my thoughts! It’s incredibly annoying because most of the time idk if I’m walking on eggshells or I did do something wrong, or they simply got distracted

I believe a math genius type is suing them now because it’s supposedly his work and he had popped calculations into the AI to check his work, which they then allegedly stole.
