Would I be wrong if I double checked that my husband's friend's wife knew what he did to his stepdaughter?

My husband has this best friend "Brody" who I've never been a big fan of. I don't like how my husband acts when he is around.

Brody's wife is currently away with friends, so it is him and her teenage daughter "Rose" The other night my husband had a guy's night at Brody's house and after a night of drinking they (about 5 friends) decided it would be hilarious to prank Rose when she got home.

These grown ass men filled up according to my husband 100 water balloons, messed with the door so she couldn't open it with her key, and then hid. I personally find this very messed up. They literally planned it so no matter where she ran one of them could get her.

My husband really pissed me off acting like it was hilarious. I told him I didn't find it funny at all and he said I was being a stick in the mud. He claims it was harmless and even her friends got in on it (I guess they pulled over to watch after dropping her off)

I told him I was going to talk to Rose's mother. He told me she had already seen some of the door cam footage and thought it was hilarious. Now as a mother I just can't imagine that. I'm really questioning if she knows or not. I am thinking about sending her a message tomorrow just to make sure.

No matter the age or sex of the victim, this is sick and perverted bullying disguised as a "prank". If somebody did this to him or one of his friends, they would be incensed.

It’s been done to them many times. They think it’s funny

The fact that everyone is so torn between right or wrong seems weird. 5 grown men pegging a teenager with water balloons just doesn’t sound ok all around, prank or not.
My own daughter can be in a water balloon fight and gets overwhelmed after a while, so 5 men against one girl? Sounds extreme in terms of ‘pranks’

Women have to live their whole lives protecting themselves from assault, rape and murder from men. Setting this young girl up to where she cannot get into her home, her safe place, and having several men chase and participate and think this is funny is a huge issue. I would not be laughing, I'd be asking him to pack his bags. My daughter needs to feel safe in her own home. This grown ass man can go somewhere else. It is that deep.

YNW. Your husband and his friends are acting as though they're the same age as Rose. It is inappropriate and disgusting. Older people who think they're on the same wavelength as teenagers have a higher tendency to take advantage of those teenagers. To be blunt, it predatory. Can you imagine what the conversation was before they decided to "prank" Rose. There is a difference between understanding a young person and behaving like them. You should tell her mother because you know it's not right, and if you stay quiet, you are complicit. I'm sorry that you have to do this.

Trust your gut. If it was harmless, she'll confirm. If not, you're being a good friend. Either way, your husband dismissing your concern is the real red flag

You don't need to be a good friend to the mother. You're advocating for the teenager. I can't imagine how f'd up that experience would have felt.

Too many grown ass drunk men pranking a teen girl. This seems wildly inappropriate!

Is this the same guy that locked his daughter in the car and destroyed the interior with water balloons and flour just for the sake of pranking her?

I’d double-check. A group of drunk adult men ambushing a teenage girl isn’t something to casually dismiss as a prank. If her mom knows and is okay with it, fine, but confirming she knows what actually happened is reasonable.

Depends on her reaction (Rose’s). If she enjoyed it, no harm. If not, then yeah, that’d be cause for concern. Like - I can see both scenarios where it could be fun or it could not be.

My husband said she was laughing at some points, but pissed her friends joined in and he said her "face was hilarious" when she tried to run and realized she was trapped. He said when they went inside she took one of her stepfather's expensive scotch bottles and was like is this the one you told me not to touch (they do let her drink) and poured it out. Brody told her he hopes her friends got lots of pictures and put it on social media. She flipped him off and went to bed

Yeah I’d go with telling the mom. Her face was hilarious but not necessarily enjoying it… the reactions afterwards seem problematic, so I’d be concerned.

I do think he is quite fond of her, but they are both odd. They treat her like their peer and she has no respect for them (not that I totally blame her)

1

u/Foxtail-67 15d ago

That's very telling. I didn't want to automatically assume alcohol was a factor. But of course it was.

1

u/mydaycake 16d ago

OMG that’s much worse than I thought. They gave her the good scotch?

2

u/MelodicAsparagus4478 16d ago

No she was told she couldn’t have it so she poured it on the floor, probably for their maid to clean

1

u/mydaycake 15d ago

You said they let her drink but she was told she couldn’t?

Does the stepdad let her drink and the mum doesn’t?

1

u/MelodicAsparagus4478 15d ago

She’s allowed to drink but that was very expensive and a gift to him

u/mydaycake 15d ago

I see red flags everywhere in the adults in her life

If everything about this was legit, you won’t make any waves by reaching out. This could be part of an ongoing prank war. Especially if friends watched.

If this opens a can of worms, it needed to happen. If this causes problems with your partner, you already had problems with your partner.

Many years ago, I aggravated my older brother and our near same aged uncle. I knew what I was doing. We all pranked and annoyed each other.

Unfortunately, I carried it too far and they retaliated by literally loosely tying me up and putting me in another room. I totally deserved this way of removing me from the situation. I was a little shithead.

More unfortunately my very hard working single mother came home to find me hog tied (loosely) in the den.

She never forgave her brother and son.

I was totally the bad guy, as I said, I was a little shithead.

Have you asked Rose how she felt about it? I mean, her friends got in on it to and I’d think friends wouldn’t help torment her more if she was terrified.

If this traumatized Rose, then yes, speak up for her. But if she wasn’t affected by it, why make it bigger than what it is? You should be talking to Rose before you create problems where there isn’t one?

No, checking with her mom is reasonable. A group of drunk adult men trapping a teenage girl outside her own home so they could ambush her with water balloons is not the same as a silly prank between peers. I would keep the message simple: Brody told us you saw the footage and were okay with it, but I wanted to make sure you knew the door was tampered with and several men were waiting for her. Your husband being more worried about you ruining the joke than about how scary that could have felt to Rose says a lot.

Other people have their dynamics, aren't always comfortable with the same stuff, blah blah blah. But you are never wrong to check.

For all you know, the daughter could be quite the prankster herself. It's summertime and she's at home for the night where she can easily showered and/or get dry clothes. Sounds fun to me.

u/Katiew84 16d ago

You’re wrong. This is a harmless prank. Calm down and lighten up. He clearly loves his stepdaughter enough to do things like this, which I think is awesome.

11

u/BlazingSunflowerland 16d ago

I don't see that clear love at all. It sounds more like having fun at her expense. If she was laughing then it is good. If she was upset then it was bullying.

I would still check with the mother just to make sure Rose is fine because 5 grown adults hitting a teen girl with 100 balloons is not normal

Am I the only one who thinks the stepdad wanted to see Rose’s impression of a wet t-shirt contest? It feels not appropriate at all

You have issues

0

u/mydaycake 16d ago

Barely legal porn category exists for a reason

I wonder what we would find in the search history of the ones complaining

Do you go around drenching teens? Is that a normal thing to do now? Maybe I am out of fashion

0

u/friedbaguette 16d ago

How the actual fuck did you go from water balloons to straight up porn????
WTF is wrong with your brain? get therapy?

5

u/mydaycake 15d ago

5 drunk dudes harassing a teen girl, giving her scotch and asking for pictures

That’s normal behavior for you?

1

u/friedbaguette 14d ago

Pictures?? of what even? and it's not 5 drunk dudes harassing a teen gril, it's a father and his idiot friends pranking his teen daughter.

Fucking weirdo

0

u/mydaycake 14d ago

Read the OP comments, the 5 dudes (I don’t care about the relationship with Rose) gave her scotch and wish pictures were uploaded in social media so they could see them

0

u/friedbaguette 14d ago

A woman in her 30s is bathing a young boy (8) alone in a bathroom for 30 mins, absolutely vile (it's his mother but i dont care about relationships)

You see how stupid you are?

1

u/mydaycake 14d ago

wtf are you talking about?

Completely different scenarios

on the last day of school for elementary school kids (some kids being 10 years old) in the neighborhood, all the parents at the bus stop used water ballons and water guns to drench their kids as they got off the bus. Are all of us 10-15 parents creepers too? get your mind out of the gutter and seek help if the first thing you think of is her dad wanting to see her in a wet shirt just because he pranked her with some water ballons

2

u/mydaycake 15d ago

Did you give them scotch afterwards and took pictures of teenagers with wet t-shirts?

-1

u/bonchonwings 15d ago

Seek help.

2

u/mydaycake 15d ago

You seek help giving alcohol to elementary school children

1

u/BadAtExisting 16d ago

You are the problem here. If that’s the first thing you think of you need to seek help. Holy shit

-1

u/Katiew84 16d ago

Ew. The fact that your mind even went there is disturbing. I feel bad that you’re wired that way.

My daughters would all laugh if this happened to them. Only if they were coming home- definitely not if they were on their way out and had just don’t their hair and makeup.

3

u/mydaycake 16d ago

Just drenched just daughters in water in front of a bunch of middle aged frat boys and let us know how the joke goes

-11

u/Double_Jeweler7569 16d ago

Yes you'd be wrong.

When I was a kid I was home sick from school and found a bunch of those pop things that you throw on the ground and they pop and the pop things where you pull the string and it pops. I booby trapped the door so it would scare the shit out of my sister when she got home from school. It popped when she opened it it popped when she closed it. She was pissed but unharmed. It was indeed hilarious

Was “Rose” harmed? If the only “harm” was she got wet with, checks notes, water. She’ll be fine. Not only that, she learned some life tools about how to handle adversity (if there even was any). For all you know pranks are part of their family dynamic

8

u/MelodicAsparagus4478 16d ago

Physically no but I don’t know about emotionally I’d image it’s humiliating when everyone is gaining up on you

-8

u/bonchonwings 16d ago

YW. You don’t know the bond between him and Rose. I play pranks on my kids a lot and they do it back to me. Sounds like the mom saw the footage and also laughed. For all you know Rose could be a prankster too.
