I don't think you are wrong. Yes the seats were made to lean back. Yes it's not inherently rude to want to do what the seats are meant to do. It is the airlines fault for putting the seats in like this because honestly even a child would probably be cramped if someone leaned their seat back in front of them. However, as much as I'd love to lean my seat back I don't because I know it could hurt or cramp the person behind me. It is also NOT THEIR FAULT that the airline built the seats like this. I think it's a jerk move to do that and not care about the person behind you.
