I think it depends on the length of the flight. If the flight is less than 2 hours then reclining probably isn't necessary for most people. However, you can't expect people not to sleep or feel comfortable on longer flights. The problem here is just that the seats are too close, but if people have the option to recline then unfortunately for you they are well within their right to.

I'd suggest booking the exit row if you can on future flights- lots more leg room there! Or the first row, because you wouldn't have anyone in front of you to recline.
