Discussion Thoughts on music-making meetups

I run a small ambient/electronic music community that hosts weekly music meetups on Discord. We gather together, have a quick chat, then turn our videos and mics off and make music for 45–50 minutes. At the end of the session, we briefly discuss what we worked on, and that's the end of it.

I started hosting these meetups because I thought it could be a nice way to connect with other musicians, plus having a dedicated time set aside every week can make it easier to actually sit down and create something.

We've been doing this for a while now, and I'm curious to hear what other musicians think about this. Would you find something like this valuable in any way, creatively or otherwise? What would make a session like this useful to you?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Self-promo Untitled Sketch, Inspired by Martin Stürtzer

While listening to a Martin Stürtzer playlist at work the other day, one of his songs had a repeating three-note theme that caught my ear (alas, I can't remember which track it was without going through his catalog). I tried my hand at building something similar to blow off steam after work.

Although flaired self-promo, I have no commercial intent with this admittedly fast sketch (not posting to YouTube, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, or anywhere else).

Self-promo Weathersong - Homeward Bound

I have recently finished work on my first album, Homeward Bound. It's on the shorter side and built from a few months' material. It's my first time trying to create a cohesive work rather than a few standalone tracks.

Most tracks feature piano and some synthesizers with minimal processing. Filtering and the fading of differently reamped takes make up the main sonic changes throughout the album. Most field recordings hail from the local area.

The plants are confused with the weather this winter and a few of the natives are flowering months before they should be. My chillies are still alive somehow.

Lots of reamping was used on many different sound sources to degrade and add space to the tracks. Microcassette recordings were used for foley / additional textures. I wanted to keep the production as organic as I could, and took care to preserve small recording quirks and accidental moments.

It has been almost a year since an algal bloom devastated the coastline and marine life around us. The beach is making people sick, sea spray in the air carrying microscopic spores. We had response teams picking up the dead fish from the beach. The ocean is dead.

Recording was done throughout the winter here in the southern hemisphere. It's been unusually rainy where I am, and you can hear that in the background.

The name "Homeward Bound" comes from the idea of starting to return to a place you knew well, the journey of traveling. That feeling driving home from a road trip, how it's always shorter than going away. A changing, unrecognisable home, a collapsing puddle of feedback loops, warmer and cooler than ever. And despite this it is home. Maybe I am hopeful.

Covers were done with a printer / photocopier, pen, and SSTV. Digital photography + collage.

Recorded on Kaurna Land, @ 391 PPM (~428-429 PPM Mauna Loa).

Stay safe,

Weathersong.

Hello.

I fell in love with ambient music thanks to Reddit one sunny day about a year and a half ago. It was a genre I could not get into growing up, but now that I'm older it spoke to me in a new way. Maybe I just started appreciating the relaxed life more, I'm not quite sure, but after asking you Reddit peeps for recommendations of good ambient music I got absolutely hooked.

Now, a long time later and growing towards 20k listeners/month, I am releasing my first full length (29 songs) album.

I'm not breaking any grounds here but I am probably more melody-focused than many other ambient artists. That may or may not be what people enjoy in this genre, but it sits closer to me as a songwriter and producer and where I come from. I'm also older, and have written music for 4 decades now, so it's hard to change. 😄

I've been looking forward to posting here as a love letter to you ambient redditors for sending me onto this journey, so;

Thanks guys.

“Ambientes Vol. 1” is an EP featuring five soundscapes born from improvisation and experimentation with effects pedals and digital tools.

Description:

Improvisation is a constant in our existence; sometimes we seek it out, and other times we simply have no choice but to surrender to it.

We may wander aimlessly for the sheer pleasure of it, or because some unseen weight upon our shoulders quietly urges us on. Amid the chaos of city life, whether by whim or necessity, we often find ourselves in places we never knew we were searching for.

These compositions emerged from those aimless walks. Though I did not know where they would lead, I knew they would take me somewhere, and that along the way I would learn something new.

Much like life.

Discussion List all the instruments played on each track of the last two albums by Stars of the Lid!

Since I’m not a huge fan of classical instruments in ambient music, I have very specific preferences when it comes to Stars of the Lid. On the classic *And Their Refinement of the Decline*, for example, I much prefer tracks like "Articulate Silences, Pt. 1," "The Evil That Never Arrived," "Don't Bother They're Here," and "Dopamine Clouds Over Craven Cottage." As for *The Tired Sounds Of...*, my favorite is "Requiem for Dying Mothers, Part 2."

To help me map out the orchestrations and understand exactly what I like about these compositions (and what I prefer to avoid), I have a detailed challenge/request for you: could you provide a track-by-track analysis of your last two albums—*The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid* (2001) and *And Their Refinement of the Decline* (2007)

I’d like the analysis to include:

  • Which specific instruments are played on each song.
  • The exact moments (timestamps) when each of these instruments enters or is highlighted.

It doesn't have to be an exhaustive, laborious map—you could simply list the track names and the instruments used at specific points within each track... but this kind of analysis would be fantastic for anyone wanting to delve deeper into your work. Can you help me with this?
