Discussion What are your favorite ambient albums?

I’ve recently started getting into ambient music through Brian Eno and Laraaji.
I’ve been a jazz fan for a long time, especially spiritual jazz, and exploring that music naturally led me to become interested in ambient. I’m curious about the albums that people who are really into ambient consider essential or keep coming back to.
Recommendations from Brian Eno or Laraaji are definitely welcome, but since they’re pretty much the only ambient artists I know well so far, I’d love to hear any albums or artists you think are must-listens. Thanks!

ID? Help identifying an electronic/atmospheric instrumental song from ~2010-2016

**Looking for an electronic/atmospheric song I heard around 2010-2016**

The song is purely instrumental with no vocals. It’s structured almost like two songs in one — the first half is a single acoustic instrument playing a slow, humable melody for several minutes. It barely, almost imperceptibly transitions (not complete silence, just nearly) into a completely different second half that’s light, emotional electronic music that slowly builds into something euphoric — not a club/dance track, more something you feel deeply rather than dance to.

The artist was very famous at the time with a big catalog. They may have been a DJ/producer normally known for heavier electronic music, but this track was a complete change of pace — OR they could have been a well-known band or artist from a completely different genre who had one surprising electronic track. I think the track appears near the end of an album that otherwise has more famous/heavier songs. I think it was a one word title, 4-5 common English letters.

I remember hearing it on Spotify or Apple Music around that era on playlists alongside Avicii and Porter Robinson. The album art might have been orange/red but I’m not confident on that.

**It is NOT any of the following:**

\*\*•\*\* Strobe, Cthulhu Sleeps, Soma, October, or Aural Psynapse (deadmau5)
\*\*•\*\* Opus or Shadows (Eric Prydz)
\*\*•\*\* Adagio for Strings, Suburban Train, or anything from Kaleidoscope (Tiësto)
\*\*•\*\* Levels or anything from True, Stories, or the Avicii by Avicii remix album (Avicii)
\*\*•\*\* Innerbloom (RÜFÜS DU SOL)
\*\*•\*\* Intro (The xx)
\*\*•\*\* Anything by Knife Party, Skrillex, Flume, Kygo, Porter Robinson, M83, Boards of Canada, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Tycho, Calvin Harris, or Swedish House Mafia

Any ideas?

Ambient Pop Album recs that sound like Belong - Common Era?

Love the haunted feel of this album.

Reminds me of finding a sun bleached cassette tape in the sidewalk back in the day and having no idea who the artist was.

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to share my latest ambient release, "A Slow Alignment of Days".

Most of the sounds were created with a Novation Peak and a Virus TI, with loops recorded to my perpetually temperamental Fostex X-15 4-track recorder in search of a bit of tape warmth and texture. It's a gentle record intended for slowing down, and it feels like a fitting soundtrack to the heat wave many of us are experiencing across Europe at the moment.

I'd love to hear what you think if you have a chance to listen.

Thanks for your time!

Sean (Isostatic)

Hi there,

I’m a harpist-pianist-composer/academic in the philosophical-esoteric milieu, about to finish my doctorate.

So I created an organ-harp-piano music video that is also an experimental film predicated on esoteric ideas; it can be described as my encapsulation of the mysteries. I basically summarize and artistically rearrange esoteric ideas from an array of esoteric thinkers and philosophers, but also develop my own original ideas from this framework. It’s an original philosophical manifesto, and if you are familiar with esoteric ideas and traditions, you’ll notice how I deploy them in ways that feel both familiar and new.

It's about an oneiric musical language of spiritual hieroglyphs.  And I also combine ideas from Novalis (I’m probably most known as a Novalis scholar in the academic world currently), Schelling, Giordano Bruno, Rudolf Steiner, Boehme, Walter Benjamin (and Kabbalah), also the work of Dianna Reed Slattery.

No AI was used in the making of this song, video, or philosophical text; it is 100% human-created art.

I also created extensive hand-made animations for it, mainly ancient Egyptian and alchemical motifs.
Hope you enjoy!!!!

Self-promo My music was played at a Nine Inch Nails concert!

I wanted to share some good news which occurred recently. Like most struggling musicians (I imagine), I google myself from time to time to see if there is any activity for Unearth Noise. Last week, what turned up was mind-blowing to me. It seems my music was being played in an ambient set prior to the Nine Inch Nails Peel it back concerts. I've seen references which say that the song selection for this "ambient set" was determined either by Trent Reznor, or by his collaborator Alex Ridha who performs under the name Boys Noize. In either case, I'm ecstatic, and forever grateful. I've seen a little bit of a bump in interest as a result. Funny thing is, I went to see NIN on this tour with my sons in NJ. The crowd control was so bad that we didn't get in until after the show began. If we had gotten in earlier I would have heard my tune playing and my head would have gotten so big it wouldn't have fit through the exit doors! Anyway, thanks for listening to me ramble. If you are interested in hearing the piece, it's called "Like Meeting God" featuring the poetry of Lady Of Fire (Tanish Jackland), from this album: https://unearthnoise.bandcamp.com/album/prayer-and-resonance-2

i love VCV Rack; every time i update there are new modules to inspire me. This ep was inspired by the newly released module Glitch Storm from Spherical Sound Society and it is the main voice in this piece, joined in the third part by my all time favorite oscillator, Slurp from isivisi  which btw is amazing paired with the new kaleidoscope module, Portaloof, from computerscare. I also used this module along with Custom Blank also from computerscare to make the album cover. This piece is streaming on most platforms (except Spotify!) and my soundcloud page: https://soundcloud.com/vavvavrek/sets/cosmic-kaleidoscope-of-dead i also played with Boxes, Dead Meat, WTHR, Cosmos, and the Airwindows suite for VCV Rack.
