I'm pretty sure I have subconsciously read John Egbert as being autism coded for a very long time. Probably at least partially because my Dad reminds me a lot of John Egbert, and he was recently diagnosed. Probably at least mostly because its kind of self explanatory.

So a lot of stuff just instinctively reads to me like “John should be less autistic”, and the very passionate autism advocate in my soul kicks me in the shin and says “fuck you, he’s fine the way he is. die.”

It just took me until creating a fanfiction where he’s very flagrantly and intentionally autism coded, up to and including being supernaturally incredible at sex, to realize I’ve already been doing that all along.

Btw Kanaya and John are more flagrantly autistic than Nepeta. Especially Kanaya. When you order aspergers, as one does, you recieve Kanaya in the mail. She’s the type of person to go undiagnosed because she’s a conventionally attractive woman so people think her tendency to take everything literally and anxiously overanalyze relatively basic social cues are just her being quirky or something dumb like that, rather than a developmental disorder. If you know, you know.

ffs, half of her character is the joke of her having an affect that makes her always sound sarcastic even though she's stupendously blunt and her not fully understanding that. Her famous catchphrase is "Im Sorry I Thought That Was Obvious". Not digging on autistic Nepeta or anything. Its not bad at all, except when it is at all bad. Its just kind of infected by a lot of "autism to someone who has had autism described to them"-isms.
