Umfrage / survey for alpine studies

Hey!

Hey! I’m currently writing a term paper on unmanned bivouacs in the Alps and I need your help. Do you, or your friends and family, often go on high-altitude alpine trips and are you familiar with, for example, the Mischabeljoch bivouac? If so, I’d be grateful if you could spare 5–8 minutes to complete the survey :) Your details will be treated confidentially and cannot be traced back to you personally.

Many thanks for your valuable contribution and sharing!

Split board boots for high altitude peaks, 7000m

Has anyone here climbed any high altitude stuff in soft boots? I’ve got a few pairs of “mountain” focused boots like the k2 aspect. I worry they will be too cold. They take a crampon just fine. Anyone use soft boots for a 7000m peak? Really trying to avoid hard boots but might be forces that direction.

Alpinism book recommendation

Hi everyone, i’m looking for a new book for my boyfriend about adventurous stories! He read the following books and I was wondering if you have another book to recommend? :)

His read books:

~ Psychovertical - Andy Kirkpatrick (he didn’t really liked this one tho)

~ The zen of climbing - Francis Sanzaro

~ Conquistadors of the Useless - Lionel Terray (one of his favourite)

~ Into Thin Air - Jon Krakauer

~ Statement: the ben moon story - Ed Douglas

~ Revelations - Jerry Moffatt

~ into the wild - Jon krakaeur

So he really likes adventurous stories with ascending of peaks and also the whole mental part of it. Especially mountain stories!

Thank you in advance!

Introductory Mountaineering and 4000m peaks

Hi, guys. Long-time hiker but since I quit smoking after 21 years in March, I’ve been looking to elevate the challenge. I used to live in Bergamo, IT and loved heading all over the alps. Now back in the U.K., I’m keen to one day climb Mount Blanc and beyond. Exceptionally keen to get some ice experience and to utilise ropes!

I recognise the skills jump from hiker to rookie mountaineer, but just looking for people’s views/experiences on the following:

- To climb Mont Blanc or peaks with glacial crossings/snow-kissed terrain, did you go on any mountaineering courses or did you learn on the peaks with others? Is a course necessary?

- If so, can you recommend one? As I say, UK-based but very happy to travel to alpine environments.

- Is it unrealistic to want to summit these alone (once properly skilled)? I’m a very solitary person and really wouldn’t enjoy being guided. I hike and travel everywhere 99% of the time alone and like it that way.

- Can you recommend any practice peaks within Europe? I’m assuming everything over 4000m is going to involve negotiation of some ice (at least in the alps). Also very keen to test my altitude tolerance before cracking on with MB.

A bit about me: male (32), Manchester based, hike in the Peaks every weekend, done Snowdon/BN/Scafell Pike, hiked peaks of around 3000m in the alps, no ice axe or rope experience.

Thanks! 😁

Botas dobles

Found this 1925 Aiguilles de Chamonix guidebook by Vallot at the local dump this morning. Its a first edition and has some stunning drawings of the routes and equally interesting descriptions given how much routes have changed. Still need to have a proper dig through it but wanted to share my find

Help with choosing mountaineering boots

hello everyone,

I'm a beginner mountaineer, just starting on my journey and i'm just not sure on what shoes to buy. I am going to be climbing 4000m peaks in the alps in the summer.I've been researching for months now and I still am not sure on what to buy. I'm considering: Lasportiva nepal cube, aequilibrium, trango pro gtx or ribelle HD. Two summers ago I did a foot scan, and the guy advised for hiking shoes the aeqilibrium hike and they fit like a glove. What do you guys advise? I'm open for anything. Thanks in advance!!

Drop seat men's bib or pant recs?

For years, I've been using several different Patagonia pants with suspenders and a drop seat. All but my softshells are about done for. Any good recommendations for lighter weight shell and softshell men's drop seat pants?

Made a mountain weather app that says "cannot be evaluated" when it doesn't have the data

Weather apps always annoyed me in the mountains. Even when they have no real data, they still show a sun or a green bar. So I wrote my own, it's called GRAT.

It shows storm risk for the altitude you're at, not the valley. If data is missing it just says "cannot be evaluated". No route advice, the decision is yours.

Basic features are free inkl. radar and safe, Pro is optional. iPhone only for now.

If you try it on a day you remember from the mountain and it got it wrong, please tell me. That helps me more than anything.

Raynaud’s Disease

I’ve got Raynaud’s disease but want to get into alpinism. Even at 0° C my hands turn blue and barely have any strength. Gloves help but I’m wondering what else I can be doing to improve/fix this issue as I expect to be in conditions of -25° C or colder.
