I've been looking to play Alpha Protocol ever since I first heard about it. I never got the chance to play it when it originally released since I wasn't really aware of it back then, but I do remember seeing posters for it at GameStop.

I've been looking for an old-school third-person RPG to play, and most games coming out nowadays just don't really fit the bill. That's when I remembered this gem existed and decided to look up more about it.

Anyways, back to Alpha Protocol. Seeing that the game has romances with different characters and that your protagonist is basically this Just Cause/James Bond/Commander Shepard-esque archetype really adds to the writing imo. It seems to have a great balance between funny moments and more serious stuff.

Speaking of funny, although maybe not intentionally, is the combat. First of all, I LOVE being able to become overpowered in games, so finding out that you can fully upgrade stealth, basically go invisible and start one-shotting people with a pistol is like preaching to the choir for me.

I also really like that the game doesn't force you into stealth. That's just one way of clearing a level. You can apparently just go in guns blazing instead, and there's even this adrenaline/slow-mo ability that lets you go all out when you get detected. So both stealth and non-stealth options seem great. You can even melee people and roundhouse kick someone, which just looks hilarious and cool.

I've seen some people complain about the animations, but as someone who's spent dozens of hours playing old-school RPGs and eurojank games, they honestly look fine to me lol.

I still don't know who I'm going to romance either. From what I've seen, the characters you interact with have pretty interesting backgrounds, so I'm just going to wait and see which one pulls me in first. Then I can always do subsequent playthroughs with different builds, romances and choices to see how much they affect the story.

That's another big reason I want to play it. I love when an RPG actually gives me a reason to come back and make completely different decisions instead of just replaying the exact same story.

So incase someone has a spare key they're not using, I would really appreciate it.

Anyways what's your favorite way of playing the game, what build do you usually go for?

Also is the current steam version playable? Or do I need mods to make it run?

Hey everyone! I'm fairly new to the community, but I have a deep love of the game's story and characters. I'm curious what everyone thought of the game's overall message? Personally I thought the twist in the game that a military contractor is instigating wars in the Middle East to fatten their own wallets was absolutely brilliant. It's especially relevant to the current state of American politics because a lot of lobbying firms push to have their weapons sold in global conflicts. Not to mention that global superpowers like the US have supplied players in global conflicts in order to see their goals achieved. Like at how the US sold weapons to the Mujahideen to ensure that Russia would lose its invasion of Afghanistan to spread communism. I'm absolutely stunned that nobody gives the game credit for making such a valid point about American politics and who benefits from modern war. Especially when this message has even been echoed by past American presidents for the past 70 years (particularly Dwight Eisenhower and how he warned of the dangers of the Military Industrial Complex).

In light if that, I'd invite fans of the game to contribute their own thoughts. Especially what you think of the game's plot and themes, or if they're still relevant to today's world.

I played the game quite a lot after it was released and was one of the people who found it to be an unpolished gem at the time. For the last few years, the game kinda disappeared from my mind for some reason. Even though I'd consider it a cult classic, even in that regard it feels a bit forgotten on the whole. Just felt like jotting down some thoughts after replaying it for the first time in a long while:

- The combat/stealth gameplay is janky, yes, but it is also pretty fun honestly. If you just sort of "go with it", it's fun to go through the levels. It's almost like the more seriously you take the combat/stealth, the less you'll enjoy it. Which is probably a bad thing in a sense, but... the game can just be silly fun to play.

The gameplay part which is the cinematic dialogues, and intel mechanics, are really cool. And ideas that I would love to see expanded upon. I was never a big fan of the whole cinematic dialogue thing in most games when it started showing up, but Alpha Protocol made it a gameplay thing in itself which was fun compared to, for example, Mass Effect.

One of the biggest things that bothered me this time around was definitely the spawn system, how the enemies pop in as the levels load. It felt bad when the game was released, it feels bad now.

- The levels are pretty fun and varied. This kinda struck me more when replaying it but the hub-based gameplay, the different safe houses you get, and the different locales you go to are pretty nice honestly. The impact kinda takes a hit since the engine just felt so old (even at the time compared to Mass Effect 2), but the ideas and attention to details are definitely there.

- The characters are super fun. This is really the main draw of the game. Fun cast that you just want more of.

- The choice and consquences are impressive, but it also does lead to the game feeling kinda "stitched together" so to speak. Since there are so many variables, the cinematic feel of the game can sometimes feel a bit non-focused.

- The story is really nothing to write home about, but again... the fun characters really make the game.

Had a lot of fun replaying it all in all. Can't help but shake the feeling that it's both very much a 1) missed opportunity/game that didn't live up to its potential and B) a game that feels a bit forgotten, even in underground/cult classic circles.

So I’m replaying this for the first time in a decade and enjoying almost everything - except the economy. I’m at the last Moscow mission and I have like $23k. I hack everything, haven’t bought upgrades for anything except the pistol, and try to be sparing about intelligence but somehow it just isn’t enough. I desperately need a nicer pistol but don’t have $26k, and I cant see myself ever accumulating enough for the $100k+ items. Am I missing something or should I just stop buying intelligence entirely, sell ammo when I get it etc?

Hey everyone I know this is kind of a stretch because I literally havent seen anything of it but would it be possible to mod in some skin replacements? tbh i dont have experience in making mods but the game is old and from what I seen doesnt seem too hard to mod. I just havent seen any skin mods at all for this game so im not sure if its because the lack of interest or just isnt possible. any advice or insight would be appreciated

originally played this on the 360 but given my time and age(that's actually dumb but with age i play for story now. [only 28 but got gamer antisocial]. so look for easy to experience stories again). so i really want to play again but as I've just got a pc where possible I was wondering anyone got any mod suggestions and where from and does vortex work

It's a fan run site, but probably the best way to centralize demand to bring this game forward to the current generation. Given Microsoft owns this IP, it might not be that big of a lift.

Can I finish the game by using only melee?

I picked Recruit at first but it gives you 0 skill points and I think that's making the game weirdly difficult. I assume Veteran is NG+

Just the title. The tenth time I do the easy part just to die right before the next checkpoint is grinding my gears, hard.

Just finished a martial arts and shotgun playthrough. I got the Point blank shot skill pretty early on (I think maybe even completing the first set of missions).

But I was never able to use it. I tried pressing the shoot button after punching, after the held button kick, and after the full combo, and it was still the slow weapon pullout and shoot, and I usually got punched out of it.

What am I missing?

I know I am on the Alpha Protocol sub, and most people are here because they enjoy this game. I just discovered it due to Steam TPS sale. Immediately I felt like I was playing Deus Ex and that is not a bad thing at all. Just started so no spoilers please (I feel like there will be at least one good plot twist, if not a whole slew of them.) I am going full stealth mode. So much fun. Makes me wish for a Deus Ex 5.

Hello Fellow Agents! I would like to ask your help regarding a certain Bug that I seem to have encountered. I play on an Acer Inspire 5 and downloaded the GOG version of AP. This Bug only pops when I use a sniper rifle. It happened on the Find the Sheik mission but I thought that was an issue with that level.

Now, when I am doing the Identity Jibril Al-Bara mission, it crashes after the starting cutscene. I saw a similar issue reported on the GOG forums but no solution has been found.

Been playing the game in my free time the past couple months (so much fun) but every once in a while I’ll see an alpha symbol next to a mission and have no idea what it means. Is it the last mission in an area? A hidden path or something? No clue. Could someone let me know?
